2011 Jeep Patriot problems
The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.
The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.
Design
In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.
The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit.The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.
An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.
Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.
All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.
The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.
For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.

The sudden and unexpected failure of the subframe on the vehicle, due to excessive rust corrosion, precipitated a series of hazardous events that significantly compromised not only my own safety but also the safety of others on the road. While driving at a low speed, the detachment of the wheel hub and CV axle joint led to a complete loss of vehicle control. This mechanical failure was further exacerbated by the total loss of transmission fluid, which leaked onto the road, potentially creating a slippery and dangerous surface for other road users. The culmination of these mechanical failures resulted in having been stranded in the middle of a busy intersection, a location where a major freeway on and off ramp intersect with a significant artery of traffic. This situation placed myself in immediate danger, exposed to the risk of collision from oncoming traffic. Moreover, the unexpected presence of my immobilized vehicle in the intersection also posed a significant risk to other drivers, who may have had to make sudden maneuvers to avoid a collision. This could have led to secondary accidents, endangering even more road users. The problem was confirmed by an independent insurance agent, and therefore, the vehicle and failed subframe were inspected by insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps or messages from the Electronic Vehicle Information Center, nor were other symptoms of the problem apparent immediately prior to the failure.

The only reason we were even made aware was because the vehicle had a flat tire and the tire shop noted the severe rust damage to the rear subframe. Jeep has acknowledged this as an issue and has released a Service Bulletin (23-007-17 Rev.B) which has now expired and owners were not notified of the potential problem.

Liability for accident or bodily harm in potential failure noted. Vehicle later towed to another mechanic with same determination. Vehicle towed to local body shop where Insurance agent denied accountability for collision or comprehensive coverage. Damage initially assessed at about $900 per part with accessory components to be added at discovery. Issue is well known to manufacturer via many complaint website postings I have since learned. Vehicle towed to another body shop which will assess and complete repair if practical. Second shop said they had repaired similar vehicle for same problem recently. Noted that subframes were manufactured in Mexico. This is inappropriate for regional application in Pennsylvania noted for harsh climate and road treatment. That vehicle was restored with Canada manufactured part of heavier gauge and quality. My vehicle is low mileage at 79000 miles, garage kept, driven locally only;engine fine. I have 2008 Town and Country Chryler and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica with NO OBVIOUS signs of such wear. The corrosive factor accelerated since last inspection in Dec 2021. There were NO WARNING lights or signs upon emergence of the problem. This is serious safety issue where unexpectedly steering loss or wheel displacement could result in accident to self or others or crash.

- Summary: While driving in heavy traffic, there was a Red light and attempted to slow the vehicle. The engine started to jerk forward and the RPMs were increasing without my foot on the accelerator! My foot was on the brake! I was able to turn into a gas station to get to a safer place to park the vehicle. While attempting to park in a parking space the vehicle continued to accelerate by itself, again my foot was applied to the brake pedal. I was literally fighting to stop the vehicle and almost ran into the barrier where customers were walking. Once turning off the vehicle and restarting the engine, it was operating correctly while I’m reverse. I then shifted into drive, and the vehicle lunged forward and the engine accelerated by itself. It drove up to 45 miles per hour without my foot on the accelerator and foot resting on the brake pedal. A complete stop was a fight, as soon as there was any brake pedal release the engine lunged forward.

- Summary: I went to get my car inspected and was told that I would need to replace my cross member/subframe which would cost thousands. I was trying to figure out how to fix it for less when I came across a discussion board where everyone with these vehicles were having the same problem. I also look on YouTube and all the comments under multiple videos showing how to replace it also had the same problem. This issue is Chrysler knew this was an issue and extended the warranty for that part and most owner of that vehicle had no idea they did. The owner ended up paying thousands for the part or trading their car in and buying another one. I believe Chrysler quietly extended the warranty and never properly notified vehicle owners of the extension. They also didn’t make any type of public announcement that would inform drivers who brought the cars used after one or more owners had it. They also did not allot enough time for the warranty. In the extension letter to dealership I dug up online was announced in 2017. The cars with this issue where produced in 2008-12 but they only extended the warranty to ten years from the start of service. That means if you brought a car in 2008 you would have had less than one year to realize you where eligible for a new subframe under warranty. Also they should have recalled the parts since so many people were have issues with it. And if one’s lived in a state where they don’t need safety inspections they would never have known.

These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. - Consequence: If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. - Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Chrysler 200, 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber and 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot, Compass and Dodge Avenger vehicles. The Occupant Restraint Control (OCR) module may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags from deploying in the event of a crash.
- Consequence: If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the OCR, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners that parts are not available yet were mailed on October 26, 2016. The recall began on August 15, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S61.

- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Jeep Compass and Patriot vehicles manufactured May 6, 2008, through July 20, 2012. The affected vehicles have a software error which may result in a delayed deployment or non-deployment of the seatbelt pre-tensioners and/or side airbags.
- Consequence: In the event of a rollover necessitating airbag deployment, the software error can lead to a delayed deployment or non-deployment of the side curtain airbag and/or seatbelt pre-tensioners. As a result, vehicle occupants have an increased risk of injury in a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will correct the software free of charge. The recall began June 21, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall number is N01.

- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR RIVET PRESENCE AND ALIGNMENT AND REPAIR THE STEERING COLUMN PIVOT AS REQUIRED, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 4, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned a few things you'd like to see improved on your Lattitude. I completely understand where you're coming from! One thing that would be really helpful is if the door pockets were a bit bigger, like they were in your '02 Liberty. Additionally, a swing gate hatch would be a great addition, and I can see why you miss having a separate rear window that opens. I think the hood prop is a cost-saving measure, but it's definitely noticeable. On the plus side, the four-cylinder engine has great pep and the constant variable transmission is fantastic! I'm really happy to hear that you're getting around 27 MPG in mixed driving - that's amazing! Your '02 Liberty only got 17 MPG, so this is a huge improvement. And passing power is no problem for this Jeep - it moves with ease. The four-speaker sound system is also great for non-audiophiles. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!

I bought this vehicle because I have a 2007 Patriot. The 2011 is a completely different vehicle in terms of comfort, quietness, and ride performance. I was expecting to be only satisfied with my purchase, but I am ecstatic with it. Great job Jeep!

Well built and handles well, except for some body lean on tight curves (compared to my BMW). It averages 24 MPG with 1500 miles on the odometer of mixed driving. Although the CVT takes a little getting used to, after a couple of hundred miles, you and it adapt to one another. However, where this vehicle really shines is when you take it down the logging roads. It truly shows its Jeep heritage! Nothing seems to faze it, rocks, water, mud, deep ruts - it's all 'No Big Deal'.

My wife's PT has stopped working, and we ended up with a 2011 Jeep Patriot. It's a good car that handles well, and the fuel mileage is great. Even with two adults and their stuff, we got a low of 28 MPG in the hills of north Arkansas to 32.9 in the flat lands of Illinois and Kansas, with the air conditioning on. The transmission takes some getting used to, but it's not a problem once you understand that there are no real gears. If you want to merge, just give the shifter a swat to drop down a bit and GO! It's important to remember that it's just a 2.4, not a V8. Overall, it's a great value. This is the mild-mannered 4WD, which is ditch-rated, not trail-rated, but it's plenty good enough. These are the roads of north-central Arkansas, with twisty hills and a lot of gravel.

Since my purchase, I have experienced a number of issues with my Jeep. During the first month, the left brake light and rear hatch hydraulic failed. The hill assist feature has also been problematic, as it stalls due to the brakes not releasing. After removing the assist, the ABS light would not go off. Additionally, the cruise control is no longer functioning and now the clutch has failed. As someone who needs a dependable car, I am disappointed with my experience. As a cancer patient who needs to travel over 100 miles to see my oncologist, having a reliable vehicle is crucial. I hope that Jeep can address these issues and improve their quality. I experienced multiple incidents of stalling on the freeway with my 2011 Jeep Patriot, and despite taking it in for repairs, the issue was never resolved. Due to concerns for my safety, I made the decision to trade it in for a more reliable vehicle with less than 60 thousand miles. Additionally, I encountered a recall for crash hazards with my Liberty model, which unfortunately could not be fixed. As a result of these experiences, I have lost confidence in the Jeep brand and will not be purchasing from them again.

I recently purchased this brand new SUV to replace my old TL after it died. As a new parent, I needed a vehicle that could accommodate my growing family, but I had to be mindful of my budget since I wasn't planning on buying a new car. While the ride isn't the smoothest (it is a jeep, after all) and it doesn't have a lot of power, it gets the job done. Going uphill can be a bit of a challenge, and the gas mileage isn't great (15mpg), likely due to its design. The cabin is a bit small, and my previous sedan had more interior room. With a car seat in the back, it can be a tight fit for other passengers, but it's manageable. The cargo area is a bit small, so transporting large items can be a challenge, even with the seats folded down. I recently tried to move a playhouse, but unfortunately, it wouldn't fit through the rear opening. However, my brother-in-law's CR-V had no problem accommodating it with ease.

This Jeep is not suitable for mountainous terrain. Despite being under warranty, it has repeatedly lost power during trips from Phx to Flagstaff AZ in the hot summer. On four separate occasions, I have had to coast to the side of the road and wait for the engine to cool down. The only solution offered by the dealership was to add another radiator under the front bumper, which cost me $300. As a disabled veteran, my husband and I were disappointed to learn that the V.A. in Prescott AZ had purchased a fleet of these Jeeps, only to encounter the same issues when traveling through the mountains for in-home care. Despite contacting Chrysler, they were unable to offer a solution to the problem. Additionally, the small 13-gallon tank does not provide sufficient range. As a result, the V.A. has switched to using different vehicles with removable air cleaners.
