Jeep Patriot problems

The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.

The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.

Design

In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.

The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.

An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.

Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.

All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.

The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.

For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.

The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

As I went to pull over the engine started bucking/jerking then the engine light flashed. I was barely able to pull over on the side of the road before the car completely stalled. I had to have towed to a dealership as it was no longer drivable. I was almost on the highway. The dealership said I had total engine failure and should buy a new car. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I ASSOCIATE THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V552000 (ENGINE) That has been open since of 11/2013. But my vehicles VIN “wasn’t included”. I was driving with my four small kids in my jeep.

Jeep Patriot 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-13
  • VIN: 1C4NJPFB4GD
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: CAMSHAFT and CRANKSHAFT position sensors keep failing. I have gotten these replaced at a local auto shop 4 times in the 3 years I've had the vehicle. Each time they're replaced the PCM is flashed but issue comes back a couple days to a week later either when coming to a stop at an intersection or when driving up to 50 miles per hour, the acceleration doesn't work properly and RPMS shoot down to zero and back up. Car has also shut off when coming to a stop under 5 MPH and sometimes starts up again. Engine light and TCS light both come on when either sensor fails, car runs rough or doesn't start resulting in a tow to a shop. This is a huge safety risk and can cause a crash at any time. VIN does not have recall, but has all the issues described in the recall.

  • Summary: Problems started when the wheel and axel came off the vehicle on a side road 3 years ago. The vehicle dropped a wheel again when crossing the country a month later. Both incidents included my wife and passengers. That at least seems resolved. At 28900 miles or so we have been wrestling for the last year and some with intermittently all the warning lights coming on and now the car will occasionally lose all power while in motion. So we have taken it to the dealership where they say it requires a replacement of the electrical harness. Topping off, the driver seat rest safety mechanism deployed randomly this last week while the vehicle was parked in the driveway.

Jeep Patriot 2011
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: 1J4NF1GB0BD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The component that failed was the front, driver's side subframe. This component and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The sudden and unexpected failure of the subframe on the vehicle, due to excessive rust corrosion, precipitated a series of hazardous events that significantly compromised not only my own safety but also the safety of others on the road. While driving at a low speed, the detachment of the wheel hub and CV axle joint led to a complete loss of vehicle control. This mechanical failure was further exacerbated by the total loss of transmission fluid, which leaked onto the road, potentially creating a slippery and dangerous surface for other road users. The culmination of these mechanical failures resulted in having been stranded in the middle of a busy intersection, a location where a major freeway on and off ramp intersect with a significant artery of traffic. This situation placed myself in immediate danger, exposed to the risk of collision from oncoming traffic. Moreover, the unexpected presence of my immobilized vehicle in the intersection also posed a significant risk to other drivers, who may have had to make sudden maneuvers to avoid a collision. This could have led to secondary accidents, endangering even more road users. The problem was confirmed by an independent insurance agent, and therefore, the vehicle and failed subframe were inspected by insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps or messages from the Electronic Vehicle Information Center, nor were other symptoms of the problem apparent immediately prior to the failure.

Latest negative Jeep Patriot car reviews

  1. Maurice Kautzer 2025-11-12

    Vehicle year: 2010

I prefer to buy cars, SUVs, and pickups and drive them until the wheels fall off. It gives me at least two years without a car payment and I feel like I'm getting my money's worth. I purchased my Jeep Patriot with 15,000 miles on it and it ran well for a year. However, it has been mechanically unreliable since then. When I started having issues, I researched and found that many other Jeep Patriot owners were experiencing the same problems. Living far from any large city, we drive a lot of highway miles with very little stop-and-go traffic. Unfortunately, the Jeep Patriot has some common mechanical issues, such as the alternator breaking down at 90K to 95K and the transmission overheating at around 45K. According to Jeep/Chrysler mechanics, the recommended transmission service for the Jeep Patriot is every 30K, which requires dropping the transmission since there are no drain plugs or transmission dip sticks. Even if you do your transmission service every 30K, it still makes a whining sound when it gets over 45K. Fortunately, my transmission was under warranty when it went out and I got a new one, but the new one still whines. It went out while I was away on work and my wife and two kids were driving, which was a scary experience. Changing any of the front lights requires removing the wheels on the front and the wheel well covers, which is a tight fit for medium hands. To access any moving part in the engine, you need a lift and professional tools. On the positive side, the vehicle is affordable and has a great sound system. I still have my Jeep with 146K on it, and the replaced transmission is still holding up. However, I still do not recommend this vehicle.

  2. Fern Zboncak 2025-11-10

    Vehicle year: 2008

I have previously written two positive reviews on the Patriot, but at 38K miles, I had to replace the front end lower control arms (ball joints), which my mechanic informed me is a common issue with this model lately. Despite the cost of the repair and the tires I had to replace before realizing the problem, I remain confident in my decision to purchase the Patriot new. However, I am currently experiencing issues with my starter at 40K miles. While some may consider this the break-in period for a used car, I maintain my belief in the longevity of the Patriot.

  3. Don Nolan 2025-11-08

    Vehicle year: 2008

Firstly, I want to acknowledge the opinions expressed here about the Jeep. I would like to share my experience with my 2008 Patriot 4x4 Sport, which I purchased used in New Mexico in 2010 with approximately 40k miles on it. Unfortunately, two days after purchasing it, the transmission overheated. The dealership initially tried to attribute the issue to the tires, which were different profile sizes in the front and rear. After expressing my concerns, they serviced the transmission by changing the fluid and filter and provided me with a new set of tires. However, after about three months, the transmission overheated again while I was driving at 70mph on the highway in a remote area. I had to wait for about three hours in the hot sun for it to cool down.

  4. Conner Smith 2025-11-08

    Vehicle year: 2011

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a recent experience I had with my jeep. Everything seemed fine until one day, it suddenly stopped working while I was driving up a hilly road. I was a bit surprised since there were no warning signs beforehand. Luckily, I was near a farm and a friendly cow came to greet me! I ended up having to replace the transmission, but thankfully my 2011 jeep had a 100,000 mile transmission warranty. Despite this experience, I still love my jeep, but I'll definitely be more cautious in the future.

We purchased this car brand new and have taken great care of it. It has been a comfortable daily driver for many years and we have been quite happy with it. Although, we have experienced some issues with the transmission overheating over the years. It seems that the filter and fluid need to be changed more frequently than the dealer recommended 60-80k miles, about once a year. The car gets better fuel economy around town than on the highway, as the little 4 cylinder engine works pretty hard to maintain speeds over 70 mph. Recently, the check engine light came on, even though the car still runs and drives fine. I replaced the faulty part, but a new code came up. We took it to a shop who also replaced the part, but they could not get the new code to clear. They diagnosed it as a fault in the computer and recommended a new one. I installed a new computer, but the code still won't clear. We are hesitant to take it to the dealership, as the local Jeep dealer is known for overcharging. Depending on the dealer's quote for repairs, we may consider purchasing a new vehicle. However, we will not be purchasing another Jeep SUV.

Jeeps have been a part of our family since 1970, starting with the Grand Wagoneer, and we absolutely love them! All of our Jeeps have had a complete low range gearing, which has come in handy on many occasions. My previous Jeep was a Cherokee that I bought in 1984. As a consultant to the minerals exploration industry and mining, it got heavy use and the low range came in handy, just like in the previous models. I have been driving manual vehicles since 1962 and was disappointed with the current Jeep transmission choices. I really wanted a full manual Jeep transmission like the Cherokee had, but my choices were limited to a glitzy model or a Wrangler. At my age, the Patriot was the best fit for my budget, and all I could get was a 4x4 Sport model with a five-gear manual, as I like crank windows and no central lock. Although the 4x4 manual lacks a true low range, when you lock the four-wheel in, it seems to compensate a bit for this limitation, as described by the technicians at the Jeep dealer. The anti-sway feature is remarkable on muddy washboard roads and where hydroplaning is occurring. I live in western Colorado, and the aforementioned features combined with the 2.4L engine are remarkable. Also, I bought the Patriot for its plain Jeep look. I like to scramble old mining roads, and the glitzy models just would not fit, as I would not want to scratch and dent such a fancy vehicle. I am a large, very large man, and this vehicle is roomy both in the front and rear for me. On the freeway, gas mileage is about 30-31mpg using cruise control at 60-65mph. There's lots of power to spare, and shifting is smooth and easy, with the stick well-positioned. I have encountered complaints by other owners regarding power, but when I ride with them, the problem is that they are poor drivers and do not know when to shift up or down in an appropriate manner. I was raised on stick shift in San Francisco, where I drove a delivery truck with 3 on the column manual shift for my father. I also spent a lifetime in the western states working on remote off-road projects.Jeeps, Ford, and Dodge 4x4 trucks are essential for evaluating a four-wheel drive's performance. Knowing how to drive a stick shift properly makes all the difference. This 4x4 Patriot performs well in most conditions, except for rock hopping. Dirt roads used for hunting, fishing, and logging are easily navigated by this Jeep. I have seen videos of new car owners getting stuck on well-graded trails like the Switzerland Trail west of Boulder, CO. These are clear examples of overly cautious and inept drivers who, by the way, had gotten off the trail, which is a well-graded railway track. I have driven this trail in my rear axle drive Econoline Ford and my front-wheel-drive VW Eurovan and have not gotten stuck. This little Jeep lacks two important things: underbody shielding and a much lower first gear. My front-wheel-drive VW Eurovan has far superior shielding and a much lower first gear. That said, I still like the Patriot and bought it because I enjoy driving manual shift cars. Lacking a low range, this Patriot should have had a much lower first gear. I find it troubling as to why a manual shift Jeep lacks a really low first gear. Jeep is missing their marketplace. It is a brand that people bought for rugged reliability and true 4x4 plus low-range lugging power. People buy the Jeep name and take them off graded trails because that is what they imagine they have. All Jeeps should be trail-rated and tested as such. They should leave the soccer mom models for Chrysler to make and dump the flimsy plastic underbody shielding. My daughter broke it just snow going Christmas tree hunting.

You've already driven over 1,000 miles on your Patriot, that's amazing! It's great to hear that you're loving it so far. The fuel economy is also impressive, averaging 25.92, 27, 24.9, and 28.24 MPG (60/40 Hwy/cty) on your first 4 fill-ups. The seats are comfortable and the driving position is just right. The acceleration is fairly good for an SUV. Although there is a blind spot at the driver's side rear, it's not a problem as long as you use your mirrors and check over your shoulder before changing lanes.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Jeep Patriot, just like many other owners on here. It's great that you were able to make an informed decision about your purchase thanks to your relatives who also own Patriots. It sounds like the Patriot is a perfect fit for your current needs as a single, empty nester. The cabin layout is very logical and the stereo, lighting, and temperature controls work great. The moonroof is a nice touch that adds to the spacious feeling of the vehicle. Even though you don't care much about backseat comfort, it still looks pretty good. The Patriot runs and drives wonderfully around town and has plenty of pep for the highway. It's great to hear that it can handle hills with ease in manual mode. Living on the Oregon Coast, you experience all kinds of weather, but it's good to know that the Patriot is reliable in rain, wind, darkness, and snow. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I was looking for a car that was both practical and stylish after owning a Titan. After researching numerous options, I became drawn to the Patriot. I found a great deal online (I recommend calling fleet sales or checking the internet before going to the dealer) and went to test drive it. I was pleasantly surprised with the overall experience and ended up purchasing a sleek black one. The ride is smooth and the features that came with it are awesome, including the sun sound package and remote start. The interior is also nice, with a simple and clean design. I was surprised to see some negative reviews, but for the price, this car is top of the line.

I've owned my Patriot for nine months now and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations. The driving experience is far superior to my previous vehicle, a Forester. The 09 interior design is simply amazing and gives you the feeling of driving a luxury crossover. Although it took me a while to get used to driving the CVT, once I did, it became a smooth and enjoyable ride. I did experience the front dome light leak in April, but the issue was quickly resolved when I brought it in and they replaced a seal. Despite a record-breaking amount of rainfall over the summer, I have not had any other problems with it. As the CVT gets broken in, gas mileage improves and I now average about 25.5 on the highway (on long trips) and 22+ in the city. Not bad for a 4x4!
