Jeep Patriot problems

The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.

The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.

Design

In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.

The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.

An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.

Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.

All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.

The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.

For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.

The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

  • Summary: My jeep would suddenly jerk forward almost rear ending people at red lights without any warning. While traveling at approximately 45 mph the engine light came on my jeep. As I went to pull over the engine started bucking/jerking then the engine light flashed. I was barely able to pull over on the side of the road before the car completely stalled. I had to have towed to a dealership as it was no longer drivable. I was almost on the highway. The dealership said I had total engine failure and should buy a new car. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I ASSOCIATE THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V552000 (ENGINE) That has been open since of 11/2013. But my vehicles VIN “wasn’t included”. I was driving with my four small kids in my jeep.

Jeep Patriot 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-13
  • VIN: 1C4NJPFB4GD
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: CAMSHAFT and CRANKSHAFT position sensors keep failing. I have gotten these replaced at a local auto shop 4 times in the 3 years I've had the vehicle. Each time they're replaced the PCM is flashed but issue comes back a couple days to a week later either when coming to a stop at an intersection or when driving up to 50 miles per hour, the acceleration doesn't work properly and RPMS shoot down to zero and back up. Car has also shut off when coming to a stop under 5 MPH and sometimes starts up again. Engine light and TCS light both come on when either sensor fails, car runs rough or doesn't start resulting in a tow to a shop. This is a huge safety risk and can cause a crash at any time. VIN does not have recall, but has all the issues described in the recall.

  • VIN: 1C4NJRBB4GD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,WHEELS
  • Summary: Problems started when the wheel and axel came off the vehicle on a side road 3 years ago. The vehicle dropped a wheel again when crossing the country a month later. Both incidents included my wife and passengers. That at least seems resolved. At 28900 miles or so we have been wrestling for the last year and some with intermittently all the warning lights coming on and now the car will occasionally lose all power while in motion. So we have taken it to the dealership where they say it requires a replacement of the electrical harness. Topping off, the driver seat rest safety mechanism deployed randomly this last week while the vehicle was parked in the driveway.

Jeep Patriot 2011
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: 1J4NF1GB0BD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The component that failed was the front, driver's side subframe. This component and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The sudden and unexpected failure of the subframe on the vehicle, due to excessive rust corrosion, precipitated a series of hazardous events that significantly compromised not only my own safety but also the safety of others on the road. While driving at a low speed, the detachment of the wheel hub and CV axle joint led to a complete loss of vehicle control. This mechanical failure was further exacerbated by the total loss of transmission fluid, which leaked onto the road, potentially creating a slippery and dangerous surface for other road users. The culmination of these mechanical failures resulted in having been stranded in the middle of a busy intersection, a location where a major freeway on and off ramp intersect with a significant artery of traffic. This situation placed myself in immediate danger, exposed to the risk of collision from oncoming traffic. Moreover, the unexpected presence of my immobilized vehicle in the intersection also posed a significant risk to other drivers, who may have had to make sudden maneuvers to avoid a collision. This could have led to secondary accidents, endangering even more road users. The problem was confirmed by an independent insurance agent, and therefore, the vehicle and failed subframe were inspected by insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps or messages from the Electronic Vehicle Information Center, nor were other symptoms of the problem apparent immediately prior to the failure.

Latest negative Jeep Patriot car reviews

  1. Geoffrey Koepp 2025-08-01

    Vehicle year: 2010

I decided to purchase the car because of its stylish design and the reputable Jeep name. I was thrilled to receive a 3K rebate, which made the purchase even more satisfying. Although I initially ignored the first Edmunds review that mentioned the cheap interior, I soon noticed that my car was not performing as expected. Despite filling up twice a week, I was barely getting 20mpg, and my tank would only hold 10 gallons. Although some people were skeptical, I decided to take my car to the dealer to check for any issues. After reading another review, I now believe that the problem may be a malfunctioning fuel gauge. Looking back, I wish I had read the more critical review of the Patriot on Edmunds before making my purchase. Do I have buyer's remorse? You betcha!

  2. Fritz Little 2025-07-21

    Vehicle year: 2008

I purchased my '08 Patriot brand new and absolutely adored it. It was one of the few 5-speed 4x4s available and was an excellent value, featuring a moonroof, cruise control, power windows, and a built-in inverter, among my favorite accessories. I especially loved the clever little spare flashlight that doubled as the rear dome light. Unfortunately, a few issues have arisen. Firstly, the moonroof leaks at random, and can dump up to 1/2 a cup of water on my dashboard (and me) at any given moment. Additionally, the ball joints failed at 45K, causing it to feel like I was driving on marbles and making terrible clunking sounds when I drove over bumps. Fortunately, the bumper-to-bumper warranty covered it, but now rust bubbles have become a deal breaker. I am considering trading it in for a Mitsu Outlander.

  3. Dallas Ledner 2025-07-20

    Vehicle year: 2014

I wasn't originally planning on purchasing this SUV, but I found myself in a bit of a bind and the dealership was offering a fantastic deal. I decided to go with the manual model and I have to say, it shifts very easily and smoothly. Honestly, I can't find a single negative thing to say about this vehicle. It's a bit boxy for my personal taste, but other than that, it's fantastic. If you're in need of a little extra space and want a great value, this car is definitely worth considering. The only minor issue I've noticed is that the car can struggle to accelerate when the AC is on.

  4. Elton Emmerich 2025-07-20

    Vehicle year: 2014

To Jeep's credit, they offer one of the few remaining SUVs with a stick shift. It's refreshing to see a car manufacturer that still caters to those who prefer a manual transmission. I couldn't justify spending upwards of $25,000 for a 4-banger (or $30k for an Outback with a 172hp, 2.5L engine - seriously?). As someone who prefers smaller engines and 4-cylinders mated to a manual, the Patriot was the only real option in my price range. I purchased it at Elk Grove Jeep, where there were 80 units on display. I knew I wanted a Patriot and was leaning towards a 4x4. After test driving everything on the lot, I can confidently say that you should avoid anything with an automatic, 2.0 or 2.4 engine. Testing the 5M and the 2.4 with the 4WD off was immediately apparent - the torque off the line was strong!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. Personally, I found that it wasn't the best on gas and I had some issues with it breaking down every couple of months. I bought it used with less than 50,000km and ended up putting in close to $5,000 to fix it up. Currently, with 100,000km on it, I'm having some trouble with the signals, lights, and windshield wipers. Unfortunately, our mechanic isn't sure what's wrong with it. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

The 2014 Jeep Patriot High Altitude fwd, CVT Automatic w/ Auto-stick (No option for this car on review form) had one previous owner and only 19,000 miles. Having driven it for 16 months, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants practicality, good looks, and a bit of sophistication, whether you take road trips with it or not. While the CVT Transmission is the worst part of the car, it's not a deal-breaker. In normal mode, it has a 'gradual rubber-band' concept, which may leave a sort of unsatisfying feeling. However, using the auto-stick feature, this 2.0-liter engine comes to life! It's good at merging onto the highway and mimics a stick-shift. You basically got 6-speeds built into the shifter. Even though some people don't know it, it's easy and fun to use. The High Altitude can get to 60 mph quicker than 10.7 seconds claimed by some professional car places. Normal leisurely driving around town, doing errands, with the trans in normal auto mode, you go just fine. The transmission and powertrain are a bit loud, but many people don't mind. This car comes with an upgraded stereo, sun and sound package (including a great moonroof), Uconnect center to connect your smartphone and have hands-free communication, and Sirius Satellite Radio. It also has leather seats, 17-inch tires, and beautiful Mineral Grey rims, as well as a stunning gun-metal Maximum Steel exterior paint. The amount of features in this car is impressive and it really surprised me. My wife loves it! On the highway, the Patriot handles heavy wind with ease, takes curves smoothly, and never feels unstable. The brakes feel solid and safe. I've gotten a decent 28mpg highway while cruising between 70-75 mph (thanks to Jeep's excellent Overdrive). The interior is luxurious with really cold A/C, 360-degree vent control, cool lighted cup-holders, and heated leather seats for cold winter days. The 2.0 liter multi-valve motor isn't a torque monster, but it can go if you rev it up on the highway. Using the Auto-stick and 89 Octane gas, it can keep up with any four, and many V6s, off the stoplight to about 50 mph. I don't understand other people's reviews saying this vehicle with the 2.0 is slow. Maybe they don't know how to use the Auto-stick. You've got 158 horsepower and they're all there (unlike many import small SUVs' hp rating). The thing I like best is the ride - it's a good combination of taut but comfortable. After many thousand miles, the High Altitude is a great experience for my wife (and occasionally me). All in all, it's been a satisfying purchase!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Patriot Latitude from the dealership! It's great that you were able to get a Jeep with so much equipment for such a reasonable price. The 4 wheel drive is definitely a fantastic feature and it sounds like it handles really well too.

I'm still impressed with it after 250,000 miles. The CVT was replaced under warranty and the dealer gave me a Chrysler to use while it was being repaired. The whole incident didn't cost me anything. At 190,000 miles, I had a wiring problem and realized I'd hardly spent anything on repairs up till then. So, I went ahead and put out $1000 for a new engine harness. That was two years ago and I've had no significant problems since. The Patriot is easy on gas and I'm an easy driver, so my fuel economy is consistently in the high 20s MPG. It gets into the 30s on a long trip if I stay under 60MPH. Mine is FWD which helps the fuel economy. FWD is great in the snow and we get plenty here in NH. I don't do any serious off-roading, but my Patriot handles marginal dirt roads and trails with no problems. Not only would I buy another, I did: we got a 2014 for my wife -- also a great vehicle. Update Feb. 2019: I replaced my shocks and struts all around at about 250,000 miles. Those were my originals and I'm very impressed they lasted that long. We get a lot of frost heaves and potholes in this area. My CVT transmission was replaced twice under warranty, once at 110,000 miles and again at 270,000 miles. I suggest any Patriot owners with the CVT should change the transmission fluid every 50,000 miles and not wait for the interval suggested in the owner's manual. Update: I've since sold my beloved Patriot to a friend. He's still driving it and reports no problems. It must be getting close to 300,000 miles now. I miss it, but with that many miles, I felt it was time for something newer because I do a lot of driving in the winter months and in the mountains. If I didn't go so far from home and was home every night, I'd still own my Patriot. It was a darn good and reliable machine. Update (2/17/22): My old Patriot is still on the road, now over 300,000 miles. I saw the friend I sold it to, and his wife is still using it.Her daily commute is 15-20 miles each way on rural roads with frost heaves and potholes. Update (2/17/23) Last night, I saw my friend who bought my Patriot. It's at 315,000 miles now, and his wife is still driving it without any problems. I kinda wish I hadn't sold it. Not to worry, though, we still have a 2014 Patriot that is doing just fine at 185,000 miles.

I bought the Patriot over a year ago, albeit reluctantly and sullenly. With a growing family, a full-sized dog, and insane gas prices, I traded in my Wrangler with resentment. However, I was 100% wrong. I honestly cannot say anything bad about this vehicle. I really like it! The sweet little Patriot comes darn close to my favorite Jeep product I ever owned, a 1988 Cherokee, in looks and solid feel. Performance is far better, and while I'm older now and seldom hit the trails, it's still a great little 4X4Xme.

I purchased my Jeep Patriot a year ago and have already driven 12,000 miles. I was searching for a 4x4 vehicle that was priced under $20,000 and the Jeep Patriot was the only new 4WD or AWD vehicle that I could find. With automatic and air, I paid 19K out the door. I live in Northern California and drive on dirt roads and in the snow. The Jeep Patriot has excellent road feel for off-road driving, unlike cars that are made for the road with AWD. Although professional reviewers give the Patriot low to average scores, they compare it to cars that cost 10k more. I give the Patriot 5 stars because it provides the most bang for the buck. While an AWD car that costs 5K more may offer extra comfort on the road, the Patriot has adequate road comfort and is far superior off-road. I have had no problems with the Patriot, and my only complaint is that the gas tank could be larger. I average about 21mpg and get 26mpg on long trips. If you drive an SUV in a big city, the Patriot is easy to park in small spaces and has an outstanding turn radius.
