Jeep Patriot problems

The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.

The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.

Design

In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.

The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.

An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.

Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.

All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.

The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.

For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.

The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

  • Summary: My jeep would suddenly jerk forward almost rear ending people at red lights without any warning. While traveling at approximately 45 mph the engine light came on my jeep. As I went to pull over the engine started bucking/jerking then the engine light flashed. I was barely able to pull over on the side of the road before the car completely stalled. I had to have towed to a dealership as it was no longer drivable. I was almost on the highway. The dealership said I had total engine failure and should buy a new car. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I ASSOCIATE THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V552000 (ENGINE) That has been open since of 11/2013. But my vehicles VIN “wasn’t included”. I was driving with my four small kids in my jeep.

Jeep Patriot 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-13
  • VIN: 1C4NJPFB4GD
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: CAMSHAFT and CRANKSHAFT position sensors keep failing. I have gotten these replaced at a local auto shop 4 times in the 3 years I've had the vehicle. Each time they're replaced the PCM is flashed but issue comes back a couple days to a week later either when coming to a stop at an intersection or when driving up to 50 miles per hour, the acceleration doesn't work properly and RPMS shoot down to zero and back up. Car has also shut off when coming to a stop under 5 MPH and sometimes starts up again. Engine light and TCS light both come on when either sensor fails, car runs rough or doesn't start resulting in a tow to a shop. This is a huge safety risk and can cause a crash at any time. VIN does not have recall, but has all the issues described in the recall.

  • VIN: 1C4NJRBB4GD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,WHEELS
  • Summary: Problems started when the wheel and axel came off the vehicle on a side road 3 years ago. The vehicle dropped a wheel again when crossing the country a month later. Both incidents included my wife and passengers. That at least seems resolved. At 28900 miles or so we have been wrestling for the last year and some with intermittently all the warning lights coming on and now the car will occasionally lose all power while in motion. So we have taken it to the dealership where they say it requires a replacement of the electrical harness. Topping off, the driver seat rest safety mechanism deployed randomly this last week while the vehicle was parked in the driveway.

Jeep Patriot 2011
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: 1J4NF1GB0BD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The component that failed was the front, driver's side subframe. This component and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The sudden and unexpected failure of the subframe on the vehicle, due to excessive rust corrosion, precipitated a series of hazardous events that significantly compromised not only my own safety but also the safety of others on the road. While driving at a low speed, the detachment of the wheel hub and CV axle joint led to a complete loss of vehicle control. This mechanical failure was further exacerbated by the total loss of transmission fluid, which leaked onto the road, potentially creating a slippery and dangerous surface for other road users. The culmination of these mechanical failures resulted in having been stranded in the middle of a busy intersection, a location where a major freeway on and off ramp intersect with a significant artery of traffic. This situation placed myself in immediate danger, exposed to the risk of collision from oncoming traffic. Moreover, the unexpected presence of my immobilized vehicle in the intersection also posed a significant risk to other drivers, who may have had to make sudden maneuvers to avoid a collision. This could have led to secondary accidents, endangering even more road users. The problem was confirmed by an independent insurance agent, and therefore, the vehicle and failed subframe were inspected by insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps or messages from the Electronic Vehicle Information Center, nor were other symptoms of the problem apparent immediately prior to the failure.

Latest negative Jeep Patriot car reviews

  1. Raheem Windler 2025-05-28

    Vehicle year: 2010

I purchased this vehicle with 51000 miles and unfortunately started experiencing small issues around 60000 miles. Since then, I have been experiencing continuous problems, particularly with the major electrical components such as lights and windows. I have had to replace the brain twice and may need to do so again. Sometimes the car will drive fine, but other times it won't start up and all the warning lights go crazy. Occasionally, there are weird humming sounds. At stops, when I push the gas, the vehicle won't move for 1-2 minutes before slowly starting to go. Unfortunately, these issues are intermittent and therefore not dependable. Despite taking it to the dealership mechanics, they seem to be clueless and unable to identify the root cause of the problem. We have replaced all sensors, some multiple times, and now they are suggesting that it's probably the brain again. Additionally, the interior is made of cheap plastic. Based on my experience, I would recommend staying away from this vehicle. It's the worst one I've owned.

  2. Daryl Rippin 2025-05-28

    Vehicle year: 2007

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2007 Jeep Patriot Sport model with the CVT transmission and front wheel drive. Overall, it was a good value and quite functional. However, I did encounter some issues. One thing to note is that the CVT tranny can be a bit buzzy. Additionally, the Patriot isn't the quietest SUV on the highway for road trips. On the bright side, you can expect to get 30-32 miles to the gallon on the highway driving around 70 miles an hour, which is great! Another positive is that there is good storage space. One known problem with the Patriot is the front end suspension system. I highly recommend having an independent mechanic check the control arms and tie rods before the 3 year/60,000 km warranty runs out. They are Jeep only parts and you will eventually need to replace them (I did before the warranty expired). Despite these issues, I still found the Patriot to be a great SUV for the price. Thanks for reading!

  3. Isom Schroeder 2025-05-25

    Vehicle year: 2007

I purchased this vehicle brand new in the summer of 2007. Unfortunately, during the first ice storm that winter, water leaked in through the sunroof and caused damage to the interior lights, dashboard, radio, and electronics. Thankfully, the dealership took care of the problem under warranty. At only 125,000 kms (less than 3 years old), I had to replace the transmission. Although the car was not under warranty, the dealership still took care of it and I only had to pay for the value of labor. However, the transmission still slips on acceleration and I am unsure of how long it will last. Despite these issues, I still love the Jeep brand and the dealership has been fantastic in addressing these concerns. Overall, I am disappointed with the vehicle but appreciate the excellent service provided by the dealership.

  4. Cary Moen 2025-05-24

    Vehicle year: 2011

I purchased my 2011 Patriot as a program car in the spring of 2012 and have been pretty satisfied with it until now. It has 83,000 miles on it and I am replacing the first set of tires. I noticed some wear issues and have been informed that it needs left and right front control arms and rear tow links. The parts alone will cost around $500 before labor. I have been told that this is a common issue for the Patriot and NAPA says they sell lots of these parts. While this is my first Jeep, I have enjoyed its good mileage of 24-26.5 mph, and it is driven 72 miles a day and babied for mileage. If I were to trade vehicles today, it would be a very uphill sale for Jeep. Unfortunately, component failure reoccurred at 138,000 miles, which required the control arms to be replaced by NAPA due to the lifetime guarantee. Additionally, I experienced transmission overheating on three occasions while on a road trip to Florida and the transmission made some grinding noises in January of 2017. Despite these issues, it still drove fine, but I ultimately decided to trade it off for a 9-month-old 2016 Ford F 150.

My fiancé started experiencing major issues with the car only a month after driving it off the lot. These issues included front end, transmission, and braking problems. It took two visits to the dealer before they would even look at it. Shockingly, the tie rods were almost ready to snap off at only 4000 miles! Due to safety concerns, we no longer take the vehicle on the interstate as it can't even reach 50mph before the ramp ends. We addressed all these issues to Jeep (FCA US LLC), but they didn't take us seriously and claimed that these issues were normal for new vehicles. As an ASE certified tech, I was able to diagnose many issues and provided detailed explanations, but they still shrugged us off. After 9 months of constant complaints, we are now in the process of lemon law. If you're considering buying a used one, do your research as FCA US LLC may try to get you to opt out with a new vehicle or cash settlement, so it isn't listed as a lemon, which can cause a significant loss of value at the manufacturer's expense.

I traded in my 12mpg truck for the Patriot. Although I miss the V8 power, I am loving the improved mpg. I am currently averaging about 25-26 with a 75/25 split between highway and city driving. I suspect the city mpg may be lower than its rated, but overall I am impressed with its performance. There seems to be ample power for the hills here in Pennsylvania, and I am looking forward to seeing how it handles the snow in the winter. The Patriot handles great, but I think the braking performance could be better. However, you do get a lot of features for the money.

I really love this car! Although I had one issue with the thermometer that caused the fans to turn on and prevent overheating while idling, it would randomly overheat while going through drive thrus. However, we fixed that and now it's doing great! The drive is amazing and the gas mileage is awesome. I wouldn't trade this car for anything!

I bought this vehicle two weeks ago because I was really drawn to its exterior design and the price seemed like a bargain. However, during a long trip this weekend, I noticed that the cabin noise was quite high at speeds of 60-65 miles/hr. Unfortunately, the vehicle has poor insulation from road noise, which means that I can hear the sound of my tires on the pavement. This makes it difficult to enjoy the stereo system or have a conversation, and even using a cell phone is a challenge. Additionally, the high RPM at speeds of 65 miles adds to the noise. While the high cabin noise is a major nuisance, I'm hoping to find a solution that will allow me to continue driving this vehicle. I plan to visit the dealership on Monday to explore my options and see if there's anything that can be done to improve the situation.

I was having a hard time deciding between the Jeep Patriot and another Caliber SXT (which I absolutely adored and ran without any issues for 64,000 miles). After doing some thorough shopping and research, I was able to purchase a fully loaded Jeep Patriot Latitude; 4 x 2; CVT; sunroof; Sirius radio for around $22,000. Since I spend a lot of time in my car, comfort is of the utmost importance to me. The traction control is an excellent feature, and the heated seats, smooth ride, and 2.4 litre engine with nice pickup make it a joy to drive. It maneuvers well in parking structures and around town, and it looks like a Jeep but drives like a car. As someone who is 5'1, I appreciate the fact that I sit up high. I believe we're going to have many great years together, and I'll be sure to keep you updated!

I was initially apprehensive about switching from a v8 Durango to the Patriot, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I love it! The Patriot has never let me down, even on the coldest mornings, and it has successfully made it up my steep driveway with ice and snow every time. The CVT is incredibly smooth, once you get used to it, and we are saving a fortune with an average of 28.5 MPG. The remote start is a great feature, and while the 2.4 isn't a race winner, it is certainly adequate even on very steep inclines. Our family has owned a Durango, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Town and Country, and a Pacifica, and we have found both the Pacifica and the Patriot to be trouble-free and reliable.
