2007 Jeep Patriot problems

The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.

The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.

Design

In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.

The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.

An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.

Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.

All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.

The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.

For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.

The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-12-04
  • VIN: 1J8FF28WX7D
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE NOW IN 3 DAYS. AFTER FULLY FILLING MY FUEL TANK AND THEN DRIVING AWAY FROM THE PUMP MY JEEP PATRIOT STALLS BEFORE I HIT 3/10 OF A MILE FROM THE GAS STATION. CONTRARY TO SOME OTHER REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE, THAT I HAVE READ, AS WELL AS THE EXPLANATION OF THE ISSUE POSTED ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE, FROM FCA, THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ONLY AT IDLE. RATHER IT HAPPENS WHILE I AM DRIVING. WHEN MY JEEP STALLS I ALSO LOSE THE ABILITY TO FULLY STEER (CAN ONLY TURN THE WHEEL APPX 1/4 TURN) AND BRAKING DOES NOT WORK AS WELL AS IT NORMALLY DOES. WHEN IT HAPPENED TODAY I ENDED UP MOUNTING A CURB AND SIDEWALK IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA. THE STREET I WAS ON WAS TURNING BUT I COULDN'T TURN WITH IT. IF I HAD NOT ENGAGED THE EMERGENCY/PARKING BRAKE I WOULD HAVE DRIVEN THROUGH A CHAIN LINK FENCE AND INTO A HOME. ONCE I RESTARTED MY JEEP AND BACKED OFF OF THE CURB THE ENGINE STALLED AGAIN WHILE MY JEEP WAS IN MOTION. LUCKILY I WAS BARELY MOVING AND ALREADY HAD MY HAND ON THE EMERGENCY/PARKING BRAKE. WHEN I RESTARTED MY JEEP THE NEXT TIME I REVVED THE ENGINE TO 3,000RPM FOR APPX 1 MINUTE WHILE MY JEEP WAS IN PARK. MY JEEP DID NOT STALL AFTER THAT FOR THE REST OF TODAY. TOMORROW MAY BE ANOTHER STORY. I SEE IN THIS FORM THERE IS THE ABILITY TO UPLOAD PHOTOS BUT I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS BEING AN EXISTING SAFETY ISSUE OR THE ABILITY TO REPORT IT BEFORE NOW. AS A RESULT THERE ARE NO PHOTOS OF MY JEEP ON A CURB ABOUT TO CRASH INTO SOMEONE'S HOUSE. WITH THE NUMBER OF REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE HAVING ALREADY BEEN MADE TO THE NHTSA I AM SHOCKED THAT A MANDATORY SAFETY RECALL WAS NOT DEMANDED.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-06-01
  • VIN: 1J8FF28WX7D
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER THE TANK IS FILLED TO FULL, I THEN DRIVE OFF, AND THE NEXT TIME THE CAR COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE ENGINE CUTS OUT. THE CAR HAS TO BE PUT INTO PARK AND THE ENGINE IS ABLE TO RESTART, AND THIS ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE TANK IS FULL - BUT IT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO STALL OUT. AS LONG AS I DON'T FILL THE TANK TO FULL, IT WON'T HAPPEN. HOWEVER THIS HAS BEEN CONSISTENTLY HAPPENING ANYTIME I FILL UP THE TANK OVER THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF.

STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-01
  • VIN: 1J8FF28W87D
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: EVERY TIME I REFUEL THE VEHICLE SPUTTERS AND STALLS. NO MATTER WHAT GRADE OF FUEL. IT WILL SPUTTER AND STALL FOR UP TO 20 MILES AFTER I FILL IT UP. IT HAS EVEN STALLED WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS WHEN THAT HAPPENS. IT'S NOT SAFE. THE JEEP DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN REPLACING STUFF HOPING TO FIND A FIX BUT NO LUCK SO FAR. IT WILL STALL STATIONARY, MOVING, TURNING, OR BRAKING. I BELIEVE IT MAY BE SOMETHING RELATED TO THE FUEL TANK ROLLOVER VALVE. AT LEAST THAT'S THE ONLY REASONABLE THING I HAVE READ OR BEEN TOLD. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-07-15
  • VIN: 1J8FF48WX7D
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: UPON EACH COMPLETE FILL-UP WITH GASOLINE, SHORTLY AFTER DRIVING OFF FROM FUELING, THE VEHICLE WILL BUCK SEVERELY, AND SHUT OFF. WHEN IT SHUTS OFF AND ROLLS TO A STOP, STEERING CONTROL AND POWER BRAKING IS LOST, AND YOU ARE AT THE MERCY OF ALL TRAFFIC AROUND YOU! THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE AROUND 2012. FROM COUNTLESS HOURS OF INVESTIGATION FROM OTHER OWNERS ON FORUMS, DISCUSSIONS WITH DEALERSHIP PERSONNEL, AS WELL AS MY OWN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC'S ELECTRONIC AND MECHANICAL ANALYSIS, THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON COMPLAINT AMONG PATRIOT & COMPASS OWNERS OF MULTIPLE PRODUCTION YEARS. THE ONLY WORK AROUND IS TO NOT FILL UP THE (ALREADY TINY) FUEL TANK COMPLETELY. THE MOST LIKELY ROOT CAUSE IS A MALFUNCTIONING FUEL TANK ROLL-OVER VALVE, WHICH ALLOWS RAW FUEL TO ENTER THE EVAP SYSTEM, AND UPON THE ECM ISSUING A "PURGE COMMAND," THE VEHICLE STALLS. COMPOUNDING THE SITUATION IS THAT THE ROLL-OVER VALVE IS NOT REPLACEABLE SEPARATELY FROM THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY. WITH THE VEHICLE BEING LONG OUT OF WARRANTY, THE COST OF A COMPLETE NEW FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY PLUS LABOR, IS PROHIBITIVE. THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY RELATED DEFECT THAT CHRYSLER DOES NOT WANT TO STAND BEHIND. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS WHEN LEAVING GAS STATIONS, PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC AND NEARLY BEING REAR-ENDED WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED. I IMAGINE IF NHTSA DOES NOT HOLD CHRYSLER ACCOUNTABLE FOR ALL OF THESE NON-CONFORMING VEHICLES, WHICH BY NOW ARE MOSTLY OUT OF WARRANTY, THE ONLY WAY TO GET CHRYSLER TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, WOULD BE TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE STALLING ISSUE, AND THEN SUE THEM, ASSUMING I LIVED! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. DEALERSHIPS AND CHRYSLER CUSTOMER RELATIONS HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY NO HELP AT ALL. YOU ARE OUR ONLY HOPE.

STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-20
  • VIN: 1J8FF48W47D
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER FILLING UP AT GAS STATION AND GETTING ON HIGHWAY ENGINE SHUTS OFF AFTER THE JEEP BUCKED SEVERAL TIMES. WHEN ENGINE SHUT OFF STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. HAD TO PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL URN KEY TO TURN ON ENGINE. ADDITIONALLY AFTER THAT,JEEP CONTINUALLY DIES IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING FILL UP AT GAS STATION. IT CURRENTLY DIES APPROXIMATELY 3 TIMES IN A ROW BEFORE THE ENGINE WILL STAY RUNNING. THIS IS A HIGHLY DANGEROUS EVENT. IF IT SHUTS OFF AND I DO NOT WAIT AT THE GAS STATION WHILE I'M DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THEN THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS AND I COULD HAVE AN ACCIDENT AND KILL MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SITUATION THAT JEEP / CHRYSLER NEEDS TO FIX. WAS THERE A CRASH ... ALMOST!

Negative 2007 Jeep Patriot car reviews

  1. Carmelo Senger 2024-10-03

I purchased my first jeep primarily for its affordability and fuel efficiency. It has proven to be a reliable vehicle during the snowy winter months, handling well in the snow. The YES fabric and plastic back on the seats have been a great feature for my toddler. Although the controls are in unusual locations, I have become accustomed to them over time. Unfortunately, the rear windows produce a bothersome amount of noise. Additionally, the seats are uncomfortable, the armrest is subpar, and the cup holders are inconveniently placed. Recently, I have experienced issues with the power windows failing, which has been a frustrating experience. Despite these setbacks, I am confident that I will be able to find a solution and continue to enjoy my jeep.

  2. Antwon Kutch 2024-09-23

I'm learning to live with it, but it's been hard to leave my fully loaded Suburban. However, I wanted to save some money on gas and I have certainly achieved that. Although, the loss of power and luxury has been a hard pill to swallow. It's nice when it only costs me $30 to fill up and I'm getting 26-28 miles to the gallon.

  3. Destin Parisian 2024-05-18

This Jeep handles like a much heavier SUV. Although the quality is so-so, it's still a decent car. However, the engine noise when accelerating can be maddening. We have owned the Patriot for over a month and have driven a little over 1,000 miles. The gas mileage is a bit disappointing, averaging at 21.3 all around, and with a small 13-gallon tank, it seems like we are always at the gas station. We are considering swapping it out next year for a foreign model. In hindsight, I should have listened to my gut feeling on this one.

  4. Jimmy Sipes 2024-05-13

Hi there! I came across another post about a similar issue and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm getting frustrated with spending so much money on my Jeep. The transmission was already replaced 25,000 km ago, and just last week the O2 sensor was replaced. The dealer also installed a new throttle body and throttle position sensor. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Positive 2007 Jeep Patriot car reviews

  1. Sage Reichel 2024-11-24

Our experience driving to the Colorado mountains from Missouri at 800 feet elevation was impressive. We were able to reach elevations of 11,000 feet with ease. Even with a heavily loaded car, we were able to achieve an impressive 30.3 MPG across Kansas, with most of the journey averaging at 28.8 MPG. The noise level was low enough to allow us to play the radio and have conversations without having to raise our voices. The seats were exceptionally comfortable, even for me with my bad back. Although we have been off-roading with National Forest maps for 15 years with every jeep we have owned, the Patriot did not perform as well as our Grand Cherokee. However, around town, we get an impressive 24.8 to 30 MPG and thoroughly enjoy driving it. While it took some time to get used to the CVT transmission, it has significantly improved our gas mileage. Despite keeping the Wrangler tires at 40 PSI, they are wearing out at 30,000 miles, and we will be replacing them soon.

I have owned the '07 Patriot since April and it was the last one on the lot for '07s. I got a good deal and did a lot of reading before test driving. I was looking for a more economical vehicle as I still have a Dodge Dakota Quad V8 but it sits in the driveway most of the time. I got the fully loaded version and I must say that the seats are very comfortable. Both my husband and I have bad backs and have yet to experience any problems. I drive both in the city and on the highway and have just reached 3000 miles. I am getting 22-26 mpg which is great. The CVT took some time getting used to but I really like the fact that you can't feel the gears change.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that I recently purchased an '07 Patriot and I'm really enjoying it so far! One thing I'm particularly impressed with is the fuel economy - I'm getting around 29mpg with 89 octane 2.4 litre engine, 5speed, 2wd. The surf blue clear coat paint is absolutely beautiful and I love the convenience of the vinyl interior. This is actually the 5th Jeep vehicle I've owned and I have to say, I'm really happy with what I got for the money. While it may not be the toughest off-roader, it's perfect for my 100 mile daily highway trips. The only thing I've noticed is that the center console is a bit awkward - the armrest doesn't seem to meet up with your elbow just right and the cup holder is on the floor board. Other than that, it's a blast to drive! Mine doesn't have any power options, cruise control, or any fancy features, but I don't mind at all. Thanks for listening!

I really appreciate the honest opinions of auto writers, especially when it comes to reviewing economy cars. I recently purchased a Patriot with a 5 speed manual and 2.4L engine and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The ride is very comfortable on the highway and I was able to get an impressive 25MPG on my first tank of gas! I even traded in my old 15MPG Wrangler for this car and I have no regrets. The vinyl seats are a great touch and they look like leather, plus they're easy to clean. I'm a big guy at 6'1

When I was in the market for a new car three years ago, I spent weeks researching online and reading reviews for various models such as the Jeep, Nitro, Xterra, and a few others. After test driving a few, I ultimately decided on the Jeep Patriot Limited and I have been extremely satisfied with my choice ever since. While there was a minor issue with the sunroof leaking, the car has been problem-free for the past 3.5 years. As other reviewers have noted, this car is packed with features that are thousands of dollars less than its competitors. The interior styling in black, gray, and silver is simple yet tastefully executed. All of the features, from the 4-wheel drive to the heated seats, perform flawlessly time and time again.
