2000 Chevrolet Cavalier problems
The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.
The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).
The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

How many miles does a 2000 Chevy Cavalier last?
Best car I ever owned
In the 17 years I owned that car I put 177,000 +/- miles on the original engine/transmission/struts. The only things that ever needed replacing on my car was tires, brakes, a/c compressor, alternator, and probably 4 batteries. A tuneup was done at 100,000 miles - coils & all.
Does 2000 Cavalier have a timing belt or chain?
Best Answer
definitely has a timing CHAIN..
Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?
Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.
What is the gas mileage on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier?
2000 Chevrolet Cavalier MPG
Based on data from 62 vehicles, 2,634 fuel-ups and 739,120 miles of driving, the 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier gets a combined Avg MPG of 26.22 with a 0.17 MPG margin of error. Below you can see a distribution of the fuel-ups with 93 outliers (3.41%) removed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-05-10
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I HAD THE AIR CONDITIONER REPLACED. THE TECH SAID THE TENSIONER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ONE WEEK LATER I RETURNED AND HAD A NEW BELT TENSIONER INSTALLED. ABOUT A MONTH LATER THE NEW AIR CONDITIONER HAD PREMATURE FAILURE. I HAD IT REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY AND ALSO HAD A NEW DRIVE BELT INSTALLED DURING THE REPAIR. ABOUT ONE YEAR LATER I BEGAN HEARING A CHATTER WHEN ACCELERATING FROM STOP POSITION AND HAD EXCESSIVE VIBRATION. I TOOK TO THE SHOP AND THEY SAID THE BELT TENSIONER WAS BAD. THIS SEEMS EXCESSIVELY SHORT LIFE SPAN FOR A REPLACEMENT PART OF GOOD QUALITY. TODAY THE SHOP TRIED THREE DIFFERENT TENSIONERS AND STILL IT WAS NOT CORRECTING THE ISSUE. I EVEN DOUBLE CHECKED THE BELT ROUTING PATTERN TO ENSURE IT WAS CORRECT. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE BELT TENSIONERS FOR THIS VEHICLE. ALL MY PRIOR FORD VEHICLE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH THEIR TENSIONERS OF SAME DESIGN. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM AS A BELT THAT BREAKS OR SLIDES OF A PULLEY DUE TO A FAULTY TENSIONER CAN CAUSE IMMEDIATE LOSS OF POWER STEERING RESULTING IN HAZARDOUS AND POTENTIALLY FATAL DRIVING CONDITIONS AND SITUATIONS. ALSO THE BACKLIGHTING ON THE ODOMETER DOES NOT WORK.THE ODOMETER REGISTERS MILAGE DRIVEN BUT THE BACKLIGHT DOES NOT WORK AT ALL.PLEASE LOOK INTO AND DONT WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THIS ISSUE BECOME IMPORTANT.THANKS.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-04-15
- VIN: 1G1JC5245Y7
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: PURCHASED USED 2000 CAVALIER IN 2006. FIRST PROBLEM (WHICH HAS CONTINUED FOR 5 YEARS) IS THAT THE SERVICE LIGHT WILL COME ON WHEN THE CAR IS CRANKED UNLESS THE HEADLIGHTS ARE FIRST TURNED ON. IF YOU TURN THE HEADLIGHTS OFF WHILE DRIVING, THE SERVICE LIGHT COMES ON. IT WILL NOT GO OFF UNLESS YOU TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT (WITH HEADLIGHTS ON). SECOND PROBLEM IS THAT FUEL HAND DOES NOT REFLECT ACCURATE AMOUNT OF GASOLINE IN TANK. IT GOES UP AND DOWN WHILE DRIVING (WITH THE CHECK GAUGES LIGHT ON). OR SOMETIMES IT IS STUCK ON E OR STUCK ON F REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH FUEL IS ACTUALLY PRESENT. THIRD PROBLEM IS THAT CAR INTERMITTENTLY OVERHEATS AND IS ALWAYS LOSING COOLANT. I HAVE REPLACED THERMOSTAT, WATER PUMP, & RADIATOR. THREE DIFFERENT MECHANICS CANNOT FIND A LEAK IN THE COOLING SYSTEM (DESPITE PRESSURE TESTING, COMPRESSION TESTING, & BLOCK TESTING). WE ARE BAFFLED WHY IT CANNOT RETAIN CONSTANT COOLANT LEVELS. THIS IS A VERY FRUSTRATING SITUATION AS I AM LEFT WITHOUT RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-02-13
- VIN: 1G1JC1249Y7
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I OWN A 2000 CHEVROLET CAVALIER WITH SEVERE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE DASH BOARD BODY. THE PROBLEM IS NOT SIMPLY A CRACK IN THE FRONT WINDSHIELD PANEL (WHICH IS COMMON ON THESE CARS), BUT THE ENTIRE DASH IS CRACKING FROM WITHIN AND THROUGHOUT THE BODY OF THE DASH. AFTER RECENTLY REMOVING THE TOP PART OF THE DASH, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT EVEN THE SUPPORTING STRUCTURE AROUND THE PASSENGER AIR BAG UNIT IS CRACKED AND BROKEN AWAY. THIS COULD RESULT IN A FAILURE OF THE AIR BAG SYSTEM. ALL OF THE PLASTIC WITHIN THE BODY OF THE DASH IS EXTREMELY BRITTLE AND PIECES OF PLASTIC ACTUALLY FALL IN TO THE FLOORBOARD WHILE DRIVING SOMETIMES. I AM CERTAIN THAT THE PASSENGER AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY PROPERLY SINCE IT IS NO LONGER SECURED CORRECTLY AND THIS COULD POSE A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN FOR A PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION. *TR

THE BATTERY WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE YET IT EXHIBITED AN ABNORMAL KNOCKING BEFORE STALLING AGAIN. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE YET IT STALLED A THIRD TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO THE CONTACTS PLACE OF RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NEITHER INSPECTED NOR REPAIRED FOR THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 208,000.

- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TYPE INDICATOR SWITCH ASSEMBLY, WHICH INCLUDES THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATION CONTROL.

This car has some great features such as a nice body style, good gas mileage, and a comfortable interior. However, there seems to be an issue with the ABS that can be a bit concerning. When applying the brakes, there is a hum and vibration felt through the pedal, and the brakes can lock up even on dry pavement. This has caused me to slide a few times, especially in snowy conditions, which can be a bit nerve-wracking. Additionally, the power window on the front passenger side stopped working after only 40K miles. Getting in and out of the back seats can also be a bit of a challenge, despite it being a 4-door car.

As a fellow mountain biker, I can fit three people (two in the passenger seat) and three bikes in my Cavalier! It's perfect for drive and drops. While it may not have a lot of power, it certainly isn't lacking either. Plus, the fuel economy is awesome. I did notice that the odometer starts glowing with heat after 21 hours of straight driving, but overall it's great in the snow!

Congratulations on your 6th Cavalier! It's great to hear that they are reliable and low maintenance. I'm impressed that in the past 18 months of owning your 2000 Cavalier, it has only cost you less than $200.00 in total repairs (including regular oil changes). I understand that the suspension may not be the strongest point of the car, and that Cavaliers have been known to hit hard over bumps, but it's good to know that you're willing to sacrifice a comfortable drive for a cheap, reliable, low maintenance, gas-efficient car. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with our Cavalier. It's been such a great car for us! We've driven across the country from Washington, DC to California TWICE and it's never let us down (except for that one time we locked the keys out in South Dakota, oops!). The only thing to keep in mind is that it can get dinged and dented pretty easily, even with minor impacts. But overall, we've been really happy with it!

I can understand feeling nervous about investing all of my savings into a more expensive car, but I found that the Chevy Cavalier was an excellent choice for my first new car fresh out of high school. It has performed quite well and has only required minor maintenance, such as fixing a 'chirp' in the front wheels and a creaky dash. The car looks sleek and has a good amount of room, as well as a nice stereo system. It's also not bad on gas. I have taken two long distance trips per year and have had no problems at all. Overall, I think this is an excellent car to get through college. It may not be perfect or amazing enough to show off, but it is good and solid enough to get the job done and look alright while doing it.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I was looking for an affordable and fuel-efficient car, and my uncle suggested I get a used Chevy Cavalier. He's owned five of them and his last one had over 160,000 miles with no major issues. I decided to take his advice and bought one with 73,000 miles on it. So far, I've had no problems with it! I even pushed it past 90 mph to see how it would handle, and it ran smoothly. Of course, there's a bit of road noise and you feel like you're sitting low to the ground, but for a cheap little car, it's been great. Thanks for listening!

I purchased the car used from a dealer with 43,000 miles on it. Despite being a trained tractor-trailer driver, I have had to replace the transmission twice due to poor design and the use of low-quality parts in the hydraulic clutch. The car has also experienced various minor issues such as knobs falling off. While the engine has held up, I am concerned about its longevity. Overall, the craftsmanship and quality of the car seem to be lacking. I would not recommend purchasing this car, especially with a manual transmission.

With 115,000 miles on the car, we have encountered an overheating issue that has persisted despite our efforts to fix it. We have already replaced the thermostat twice and the radiator once, and checked the fan and catalytic converter, but the problem persists. Our next step is to check the head gasket. Despite this aggravation, we remain confident in our ability to diagnose and fix the issue. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

We bought the car new. Although the ride quality is extremely rough and the dashboard rattles constantly, the car is still a good value considering the package options. The front seats are a bit uncomfortable and the stereo is a bit cheesy, but overall it's a decent car.

I purchased my Cavalier in August of 2000 and unfortunately, from the beginning, there was a chirping sound coming from the driver's side wheel. Despite taking it to the dealership, the issue was never resolved. The car was running well until 2003 when I started experiencing issues with the transmission and oil leakage. Although I would get it fixed, the problem would reoccur after just four months. Currently, I am in the process of replacing the transmission and catalytic converter as both fluids have leaked out. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car to anyone. However, I do acknowledge that every car has its own unique issues. As for me, I have decided not to purchase another GM vehicle again.
