2014 Jeep Patriot problems

The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.

The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.

Design

In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.

The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.

An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.

Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.

All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.

The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.

For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.

The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-15
  • VIN: 1C4NJRFB9ED
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: My jeep would suddenly jerk forward almost rear ending people at red lights without any warning. While traveling at approximately 45 mph the engine light came on my jeep. As I went to pull over the engine started bucking/jerking then the engine light flashed. I was barely able to pull over on the side of the road before the car completely stalled. I had to have towed to a dealership as it was no longer drivable. I was almost on the highway. The dealership said I had total engine failure and should buy a new car. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I ASSOCIATE THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V552000 (ENGINE) That has been open since of 11/2013. But my vehicles VIN “wasn’t included”. I was driving with my four small kids in my jeep.

Negative 2014 Jeep Patriot car reviews

  1. Theo Yundt 2024-09-22

I've had my 2014 Patriot for 5 years and unfortunately, I've experienced some issues with it. The rear end went bad, the radio and window switches stopped working, and there's rust on every door despite waxing twice a year. Additionally, I've had some constant problems with cam position sensors. While my experience has been frustrating, I would caution against purchasing a Chrysler product.

  2. Sylvan Braun 2024-09-17

The throttle body of the car broke before it reached 65000 miles. Despite the poor service at the dealer, it took them days to diagnose the issue. However, it is worth noting that unfortunately, the insurance did not cover the cost of the part.

  3. Coby Marks 2024-08-22

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to bring to your attention a few things that I've noticed with my car. I've had to bring it in for service four times already, and I'm still experiencing some issues. For example, the seat belt alarm doesn't seem to be working, and the radio gets staticky when I plug my phone into the charger. Additionally, my gas gauge drops to E when it's cold outside, and it pulls to the right. The mechanics have told me that they haven't seen anything wrong, but I wanted to check with you to see if there's anything that can be done. Thank you so much for your help!

  4. Chad Runolfsson 2024-08-17

I purchased two 2014 Jeep Patriots last year. Unfortunately, within the first 2000 miles, the brakes on both Jeeps started squealing. Despite having the pads and drums replaced, the squealing persisted. After multiple service trips, Chrysler informed me that they could not do anything about it, stating that the squealing was 'normal'. As a result, I now have two new cars that squeal every time we put them in reverse and apply the brakes. I would caution anyone considering purchasing a Jeep, as my experience has shown that they do not stand behind their product and have poor customer service.

  5. Maximillian Kohler 2024-08-14

I purchased this car without much research or consideration of other vehicles. Our only car had died and I needed a replacement that day, so I chose what I thought was the cutest car on the lot. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a big mistake. This car has had numerous problems since day one. I have owned it for three years, it has 76,000 miles on it, and I have spent over $12,000 on repairs, not including regular maintenance. I would not recommend this car to anyone. Despite some positive reviews, the fact that it has an overall rating of 6.2 on cars news should be a warning. If you want to avoid wasting your time and money, I suggest looking elsewhere. Some of the issues I have had include a leaking sunroof, throttle body problems, motor mount issues, battery terminal problems, and problems with the brakes and radiator. Although I have put 50,000 miles on the car, this level of work and expense is not normal for a vehicle. After doing some research, I discovered that Jeeps made in certain years have bad parts, which can cause other parts to fail. This may explain why I have had to replace so many parts repeatedly. Additionally, the car has a lag when accelerating, which is apparently normal for Jeeps. Despite all of these negatives, there are a few positives. The car is really cute, and I love the exterior and interior design. The center console has an actual outlet, which has been useful, and the lighted cup holders, electronics, and Bluetooth are easy to use.I had a major accident where I was rear-ended pretty hard while at a complete stop on the interstate. The other driver's car (a BMW) was completely destroyed, while mine only suffered a couple of scrap metal pieces from hers and a small gash on the bender. I purchased my car used from Carmax, so I don't have any dealership stories to share. However, I would advise potential buyers to do their research before making a purchase and to check out their local Carmax. I opted for a $4,000 6-year/160,000 miles warranty, which has already paid for itself a few times. It's definitely worth considering!

Hey there! I just wanted to share a bit about my first vehicle - a 1965 American Rambler station wagon with three on the tree. These days, I'm loving my Jeep Patriot - it's a no-nonsense SUV that can take me anywhere I want to go. It's a great all-purpose vehicle without all the bells and whistles. I've lived all over the place - from the Caribbean to the Hawaiian islands and everywhere in between (except Alaska) - and this Jeep Patriot has been a great asset in every home I've had. It's perfect for on- or off-road adventures. Although, for me, I don't see the need to finance anything I don't need. Thanks for listening!

The Jeep Patriot is perfect for my needs. I find it easy to get in and out of the car without any issues. The seats are comfortable and the rear storage provides plenty of room for my needs. However, I am still adjusting to my new car and have noticed that putting my dogs in the back with their doggie seats is difficult as one side is too wide to hook the safety straps. I used to have a RAV4 and the storage in the car was more hidden, but overall the Jeep does have plenty of storage too. It's only been a week since I got the car, so I can't give a better overall rating yet. So far, I am liking it and time will tell how everything else is for maintenance and repairs.

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with this vehicle. Even though I didn't do much research before purchasing it, I've been pleasantly surprised by how reliable it is in all weather and road conditions. Living in a rural area, the 4WD has been a lifesaver on steep, snowy, rutted dirt roads. While it may not be the best for off-roading, it definitely got me home safely during snowy weather. The traction control has also been a great feature that has come in handy a few times. I've made sure to keep up with routine maintenance and haven't had any mechanical or electrical issues so far. The only thing I would improve is the acceleration. Thanks for listening!

Here's a funny story - while waiting for a Ford Torneo from Spain, my little Chrysler broke down, which was quite expensive. I had to cancel the order, forfeit the deposit, and look for a new vehicle. My wife suggested going back to a Jeep, and after reading both negative reviews from professionals and positive reviews from owners, we decided to go for it. Surprisingly, we found nothing that put us off, except for a growing skepticism of professionals. However, they were proven wrong on every count! The salesman even managed to finagle a discount to rebate the $500 deposit after I agreed to buy, and now we're happily driving our new Jeep!

You have a 2014 Sport 2.4L 6 speed automatic (Hyundai transmission, not CVT) that you bought new in 2013 and have maintained. It's amazing that you still use it as a daily driver, even with 152,xxx miles on it! It's clear that this car has been a great investment for you, especially considering how low the maintenance costs have been over the years. The only things that have needed replacing are a wheel bearing, shocks and struts, control arms, motor mounts, and serpentine...all very reasonable repairs for an economy SUV that's made it 152,xxx miles and 10 years. Well done!
