2000 Ford Escort problems
The North American version of the Ford Escort is a range of cars that was sold by Ford from the 1981 to 2003 model years. The direct successor of the Ford Pinto, the Escort also largely overtook the role of the European-imported Ford Fiesta as the smallest vehicle in the Ford model line in North America. Produced across three generations, the first generation was a subcompact; the latter two generations were compact cars. Becoming highly successful in the marketplace, the Escort became the best-selling car in the United States after 1982, a position it would hold for much of the 1980s.
Produced across three generations, the Escort was the first world car developed by Ford, with the first-generation American Escort designed alongside Ford of Europe, who transitioned the Escort Mk III to front-wheel drive. During its production, the Escort also underwent a wide use of platform sharing and rebranding. The first generation served as the basis of the longer-wheelbase Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz, the two-seat Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 and was rebranded as the Mercury Lynx. The second generation was introduced for 1991, growing into the compact segment. Moving away from a shared design with Ford of Europe, the Escort now shared a platform with the Mazda 323 and sharing a body with the Ford Laser (a model line sold in Asia and Oceania); the Mercury Lynx was replaced by the Mercury Tracer. For 1997, the third generation served as an extensive redesign of the previous-generation sedan; the Escort ZX2 two-door was introduced, with the Mercury Tracer adopting a similar redesign.
Ford introduced the Ford Focus in North America for 2000 as its third "world car", phasing it in as the successor of the Escort. After 2000, the four-door Escort was moved primarily to fleet sales (with the coupe remaining available); production ended entirely after the 2002 model year. In contrast to the first-generation American Escort and Escort Mk III of Ford of Europe (and the Mondeo/Contour and Mercury Mystique), the Focus adopted a much larger degree of commonality between its European and North American variants, in effect, becoming the original world car Ford had originally envisioned with the Escort.
During its entire production, the Escort was produced by Wayne Stamping & Assembly in (Wayne, Michigan) and the first generation was also produced by Edison Assembly in (Edison, New Jersey), San Jose Assembly Plant in (Milpitas, California), and Oakville Assembly in (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) while the second and third generations were also produced by Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly in (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico).

- VIN: 3FAFP13P9YR
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE FIRST DEFECT IS ABOUT THE SHIFTING GEARS LIGHT. I CAN NOT SEE THE SHIFTING GEARS AT NIGHT UNLESS I TURN THE CAR'S LIGHT ON OR SOMETIMES I USE A LIGHT APP TO SEE THEM. THIS IS BECAUSE THE SHIFTING GEARS DON'T SHOW UP ON THE SCREEN AND ALSO THERE'S NO LED LIGHTS FOR THE SHIFTING GEARS THE OTHER PROBLEM I WANT TO REPORT IS THAT THESE CARS HAVE ALWAYS HAD LOUD NOISES AND I AM SUSPECTING THERE'S TRANSMISSION/ENGINE DEFECTS. NOW I AM LEFT WITH A DISABLED VEHICLE BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION JUST DECIDED TO BREAK ON ME, I DROVE IT PERFECTLY FINE THE DAY BEFORE IT BROKE DOWN. THE NEXT DAY, AS I WAS USING THE CAR, I TURNED IT ON AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME REALLY HARD AND THE CAR WAS MOVING SUPER SLOWLY SO I DECIDED TO PARK IT RIGHT BACK. AFTER I TOLD A MECHANIC EXPERT ABOUT IT, HE TOLD ME THE TRANSMISSION IS GONE. I DON'T HAVE NO MONEY TO REPAIR IT BECAUSE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT COST A LOT OF MONEY. FORD SHOULD REALLY TAKE A LOOK AT THIS VEHICLE AND FIX THE MANY DEFECTS THEY CAME UP WITH

The ZX2 is a fantastic car, especially for the first 10,000 miles. The steering is tight and responsive, allowing for maneuvers that are only possible in this car. With a limit of 105mph, it's perfect for those who prioritize safety. The brakes are just right and the gears shift smoothly, making for a comfortable ride. Additionally, the car has great MPG, allowing me to drive 25 miles even with the fuel light on. Although there were some issues with the steering and heater noises as the car racked up miles, I was impressed that I didn't have to replace the brake pads even once during the entire 42,000 miles driven. While I wouldn't buy this car new again due to its significant depreciation after the first year, I would highly recommend finding a low-mileage used one with more options. And don't forget to get the 5-speed! ;o)
-
Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that it's been treating you well so far. Despite being used to a smaller two-door coupe, this compact car is surprisingly spacious and comfortable, even for someone as tall as you. The previous owner took great care of it, with a transmission rebuild and tie rod replacement, so you can be confident in its reliability. It's also impressive how fuel-efficient it is, with over half a tank left after 100 miles. The engine is powerful when you need it to be, but it's understandable that you want to take good care of your first nice car. Overall, it sounds like a fun and comfortable ride with good sound quality. Enjoy cruising in it!
-
When you got your ZX2 in January 2004, you were astounded to find a new motor, transmission, and S/R computer in it. Despite the high mileage (79,000) and just needing transportation to and from work, you weren't expecting much, but you've got a car that not only can smoke rubber in first and second gear, it beats the pants off Honda Civics. It does what you want it to do and does it VERY well.
-
You've had your car for almost three years now, and it's been a great ride so far! You've put almost 50,000 miles on it and it's still going strong, just like it's new. The only issue you've had was with the gear shifter, but luckily the warranty covered it. Overall, it's a fantastic car for anyone!
-
I hope you're enjoying your car! It sounds like you made a great choice with all those options. It's always a relief when a car is reliable and doesn't require too much maintenance. Keep up with those routine check-ups and you'll be cruising for a long time!

I absolutely loved having this car! It was with me through half of high school and most of college, and it only had two major problems. I must admit, I drove it a little rough, but even then, it held up really well. The clutch went out a year after I got it, but that was only because it was the original clutch, and the previous owner used to race it on the weekends. The other time, the battery had lasted 6 years without replacing. The only downside is that you can barely get $600 for it if it's in average shape, and the room on the inside is almost nothing. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed having this car!
Nicholaus Nikolaus 2024-10-17
I purchased my 2000 Ford zx2 brand new with only 34 miles on it. Over the last 3 and a half years, I have driven it for 70,000 miles. Although I have encountered some issues with the automatic transmission, which has required two flushes, the car has been reliable overall. The transmission tends to shift hard out of first gear, even when the fluid is full. Additionally, I had to replace the left front tie-rod. However, the car has performed well and even protected me in a 45mph accident with a soccer mom in her mini van. On average, I get 27mpg. Thank you for considering my experience with this car.

This car is a very reliable little car. Although it may not be the best choice for family trips or long journeys, it can certainly get the job done. It is an excellent choice for getting around town or taking short trips. However, it may become somewhat uncomfortable for trips lasting 2 hours or more. The car has never had any issues starting, although it may be a little sluggish in sub-zero temperatures (which is typical of 4-cylinder engines). The gas mileage is pretty good, making it an excellent and reliable choice for getting around.

I have owned several cars in the past, including a Ford Taurus, Acura Legend, and Honda Accord. Currently, I have a ZX2 which I bought as part of a voluntary repo from my credit union. Although it had 30,400 miles on it when I bought it, it unfortunately experienced a problem where the gears fused together and the car became locked in second gear. The original dealer quoted me $1,600 for repairs, while a replacement would cost $3,200 plus labor. As someone who has experience with both Honda and Ford cars, I have found that the Fords tend to be more costly.

I bought this car 4 years ago back in 2000 and I have really enjoyed having it around. It's a fun car to drive back and forth to work and I haven't had any problems with it. It's been a very reliable car and I would definitely buy another one if given the chance. Out of all the compact coupes, I would say the ZX2 is a great coupe. Since I spend most of my time around cars, I know what I'm talking about.
