2015 Jeep Patriot problems

The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.

The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.

Design

In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.

The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.

An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.

Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.

All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.

The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.

For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.

The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

Common 2015 Jeep Patriot problems

The 2015 Jeep Patriot has been noted for several common problems by its owners, which can be categorized into engine, transmission, and design issues.

  • Transmission Problems: The 2015 Jeep Patriot has been reported to have transmission issues, including overheating and difficulty in shifting gears. These problems are more prevalent in models equipped with Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs). The CVT transmission can become too hot, leading to a loss of acceleration, whining or humming noises, and jerking or losing power while driving. The CVT transmission is also very expensive to replace, even with a used one.
  • Design Issues: The 2015 Jeep Patriot has been criticized for its unattractive boxy design, which is not as sleek as other cars in its class. Additionally, the car has been reported to have a lack of cargo room and outdated technology compared to its competitors.

These common problems with the 2015 Jeep Patriot can be a significant concern for potential buyers, and it is essential to be aware of these issues before making a purchasing decision. It is recommended to have any used vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before buying to ensure that it is in good mechanical condition and to avoid any unexpected repairs.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
  • VIN: 1C4NJPBA1FD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: My car has caught on fire with smoke at least 4 times, 3 times with my minor child inside of it. I have video to show you just how dangerous it is. All components of the vehicle have failed. I have put thousands of dollars into the vehicle and it only has 80,000 miles on it. My safety and my son and elderly mother's safety has been at extreme risk and my car is NOT SAFE TO OWN OR DRIVE. Carl Gregory, the dealer, never informed me EVER of a 2015 Jeep Patriot recall only three months after I purchased the vehicle while pregnant. The vehicle has been inspected/ worked on by Carl Gregory and now Southern Motors Jeep several times over the last 8 years located on Middleground Road at the corner of Abercorn Street in Savannah, Georgia. My insurance company has charged me to tow my vehicle at least six times as my son and I have been stranded all over the city waiting hours for a tow truck. There were no warning lamps on the vehicle prior to it catching fire and I have my car tuned regularly at Wal-Mart Automotive and cleaned at Montgomery Cross Roads Car Wash once a month. Today the engine stalled and I barely made it out of of the street which is highly dangerous for pedestrians and other drivers on the road. This is probably the 3rd time it has done that. The steering wheel stalls leaving me at the whim of an open road as my car goes out of control. The radio's electrical unit shut down two years ago and the back door does not open. I can't afford to fix those. The brakes were replaced approximately two years after owning it as the vehicle would not slow down during a red light (at the cost of $2,000). I had to veer right. Last November, the car was worked on and the clutch was replaced because it stopped working. One month ago we paid $600 for a new power steering hose to be replaced as it apparently was and continues to leak fluid. This has now been indicated on the dashboard as "hot oil". Currently, I love my car but my family and I are PETRIFIED AND TRAUMATIZED.

STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-13
  • VIN: 1C4NJPFA4FD
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving the vehicle will randomly, without warning or any dash notification icons alerted, turn off engine- radio, lights, a/c everything else is still on but engine is off. This occurred 4 times in less than a 2 mile distance without any check engine or notification lights on the dash before, during, or after the event. This issue originally started about a week ago, when the check engine and throttle system notification icons came on, followed immediately by the car going into what seemed to be limp mode. Car was towed to the jeep dealership, they said issue was the battery and that an oil change was needed. Had issues addressed took the car how two days later, same issue occurred again. While driving same two icons suddenly came on then car went immediately into limp mode and was not driveable. Took the car back to the jeep dealer, they took a few days to drive it and stated it was the fuel throttle body that needed to be replaced. Had the part replaced and the car drove as normal, no icons on dash after the repair, next morning same issue occurred again while driving, icons come on dash, immediately car goes into limp mode. Circling back to the biggest concern, is I’ve found large amounts of owners having the exact same if not oddly similar issues with varying years of the jeep patriots. Many are reporting my reason for this report in that suddenly after Jeep dealers require all these repairs they’re experiencing the engine completely shutting off WHILE DRIVING. This is incredibly dangerous and I’m concerned as to why there A. Isn’t a repair for this common issue in these models, and B. Why a recall hasn’t been submitted for the most dangerous scenario where many owners are having their cars engines shut down while driving, and some at high speeds. This is incredibly dangerous and frustrating that our safety has not been addressed when online there are years worth of forums for these issues without resolution.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
  • VIN: 1C4NJRFBXFD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Urgent Safety Complaint: Sudden Loss of Power in 2015 Jeep Patriot on Interstate I am writing to formally report a critical safety issue I experienced with my 2015 Jeep Patriot on multiple occasions. While driving on the interstate at approximately 70mph, my vehicle unexpectedly lost power, causing an immediate drop in speed. This incident occurred under normal driving conditions with no prior warning signs or dashboard alerts. The sudden loss of power in a high-speed lane posed a severe risk not only to my safety but also to other motorists, as it could have led to a multi-vehicle collision. Fortunately, I was able to maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder without incident, but the potential for a more severe outcome was distressingly high. I am extremely concerned about the reliability and safety of the 2015 Jeep Patriot. I urge a thorough investigation into this matter to identify and rectify any underlying mechanical or electrical issues that could lead to such a dangerous situation. It is crucial to address this problem promptly to prevent potential accidents and ensure the safety of all drivers. Researching this issue online has shown that this is a common issue among many Jeep Patriots. I am willing to provide further details or assistance as needed for your investigation. Thank you for your prompt attention to this serious safety concern. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-18
  • VIN: 1C4NJRBB5FD
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This car keeps shutting off and having overheating issues on and off while driving. I have replaced all pistons, fuel injectors, relays, gaskets, thermostats, hoses, and the catalytic converter. I've seen that over 60,000 cases have been reported about this issue with this vehicle and these vehicles are still being sold used at used car dealers despite the issues being unrepairable. This is a real safety issue as the car stops running with no warning no matter where you are driving. You can see all the same reports on multiple sites online. Why hasn't jeep done anything about this issue? I know I bought mine used but I'm sure the used car dealer would have never had this vehicle on their lot if it was recalled as it should have been.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-29
  • VIN: 1C4NJRBB3FD
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The throttle body on my 2015 Jeep has been replaced twice and is faulty again for the third time. I've owned the vehicle since brand new from dealer. The throttle body’s main task is regulating air intake on the engine. The throttle body malfunction makes the Jeep prone to engine stalling, starting failure, or power surge while accelerating. It is a safety hazard and environmental hazard, since the problem impacts engines and emissions. Significant problems like reduced acceleration or deteriorating fuel efficiency.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-26
  • VIN: 1C4NJRFB1FD
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: Over the past year, the car has had 4 crank position sensors, new pig tails/connectors on the wire harness, a new throttle body, and a new MCM. The Jeep will randomly shut off without warning either at stoplights/traffic or on the highway at speed. While at speed, the car will "restart" itself, but if it stalls while stagnant a manual restart is necessary. When the stalling occurs, warning lights do not appear on the dash. Lately, however; the crank position code P0339 has come up with the check engine light. I recently experienced a crank position sensor code followed by a cylinder 3 misfire which caused the car to go into limp mode. Once I replaced the MCM, the misfire went away. Most recently (today) the car stalled in the middle of an intersection while making a left turn; my [XXX] son was in the car with me. Since it was a stop light, the car was able to be restarted in time, but had it been a stop sign/non-stop oncoming traffic, the situation could have been much worse. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R68.

Negative 2015 Jeep Patriot car reviews

  1. Cyril Kilback 2024-11-28

I purchased this car for a great price of 25,000, which has now increased to 60,000 over the two years that I have owned it. I have not experienced any issues with the car and maintenance is easy to do, making it a great option for those who prefer to do it themselves. However, as someone who is 6'4, I find that the seats do not go down, which can be a bit of an issue as the rearview mirror creates a blindspot, making it difficult to see traffic lights without ducking down. The gas mileage is decent, considering the size of the vehicle and the naturally aspirated motor. The CVT can feel a bit iffy at times, but overall it's a good car. Although it's a slow car, it's perfect for a small family SUV. The interior is cheap, but it's holding up pretty well. The cargo space is plentiful, which is one of the reasons why I bought it. However, it's worth noting that the 2015 model does not come with a rearview camera as standard, which can be a bit of an issue when parallel parking. I would recommend getting a rearview camera if you decide to purchase this car. Overall, I like the style of the car and it's decent on gas, but if I had done more research, I would have paid more for a better vehicle. While this car is not bad, there are better options out there that may be worth the extra cost.

  2. Jalen Wisoky 2024-10-20

Although my previous car, a Patriot, had some issues with the speakers, windows, transmission, and engine, I decided to trade it in before having to spend a lot of money on repairs. Despite these problems, I did enjoy the auto start and heated seats. I am now driving a Cherokee, which not only rides better but also has more room and is a 4x4. I hope that these issues are not present in other Patriots!

  3. Myrl Lowe 2024-08-18

I purchased this car in February. However, I have noticed that the stereo system is not up to the mark and the car consumes a lot of fuel. Additionally, the transmission seems to be slipping and the brakes provide a pushback when applied. Despite these issues, I am confident that I can address them and make this car perform at its best.

  4. Chesley Quigley 2024-07-26

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the vehicle I purchased 3 months ago. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the electrical system, which has resulted in 6 visits to the shop. The dash lights, radio, climate control vents, and power windows have all been affected. As you can imagine, this has been frustrating given the cost of the vehicle. I have noticed that others have had similar experiences, which is disappointing. I have been in touch with the manufacturer regarding the lemon law, but they have classified these issues as minor and not impacting the overall safety and performance of the vehicle. I wanted to share my experience with you so that you can make an informed decision. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

I am experiencing some issues with my 2015 Patriot, such as dashboard lights not turning off and occasional radio malfunctions. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my decision to purchase this car and believe that these issues can be resolved. I am committed to finding a solution and continuing to enjoy my Patriot.

Positive 2015 Jeep Patriot car reviews

To begin with, I must respectfully disagree with the 'pro' review as I find it to be quite inaccurate. The vast majority of 2015 Patriots come with auto transmissions as Jeep has done away with the CVT. Additionally, the 4x4 model boasts a competitive 2.5L engine. While Jeep interiors may have been considered cheap in the past, the 2015 interior is actually quite impressive! As an architect, I appreciate the simple and functional design, without any unnecessary curves or swoops, and the spacious cabin. The cargo bed is also quite efficient, unlike the Nissan Juke. The back seats fold flat, which is a feature lacking in the Honda CR-V. I also love the illuminated cupholders! The Latitude model comes with a host of great features at a reasonable price, including heated seats, reclining rear seats, audio controls, a 115V outlet, remote start, and height-adjustable seats. On a recent trip from Denver to WY, I was able to achieve an impressive 30mpg, even with a 4000ft elevation gain. With 4WD, you can enjoy the benefits of being in 2WD 95% of the time, which results in better gas mileage than AWD cars, while still having better 4WD performance when you need it. After 16 months of ownership, I have only had to go in for 2 oil changes, with no other repairs or maintenance required. Even with frequent driving in Colorado and skiing every weekend, I have yet to encounter snow that I can't get through. In fact, my coworker's Subaru has been challenged several times due to its low clearance and wide wheelbase. I have taken this car on two road trips and found it to be incredibly comfortable. The back is spacious enough that I can fold the seats down, inflate an air mattress, and camp in my car in comfort (with plenty of pillows!). As an update, after 54,400 miles, I have had almost zero problems with this car. The only non-routine repair required was to replace the control arms and tension rods, which was likely due to hitting curbs and general bad road conditions here in the freeze/thaw of Denver. I also took this car onto some pretty rough roads in the Canyonlands NP and had zero issues, unlike my coworker's Subaru Crosstrek.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I bought my Jeep back in July and have already put 13,000 miles on it! I've taken it on some pretty long trips to Ohio, Virginia, and Georgia, so it's definitely seen some wear and tear. But you know what? I absolutely love it! While it may not handle like a sports car, it's perfect for me and my family. In fact, I would highly recommend it to anyone, whether you're part of a family or just a couple. I plan on driving this Jeep until it dies! Thanks for listening.

I love my Jeep Patriot! However, I have had to take it to the dealer's repair shop five times in the past seven months to fix the trim on the windshield and roof. I believe this may be a defect that Chrysler/Jeep needs to investigate. Perhaps there is an issue with the groove? Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I only paid 18000 out the door for this jeep! I love everything about this jeep. It's great for the beach, camping, fishing, and towing. I can't say anything bad about it. I got the Altitude with black wheels and badges... it's a looker for low cash. Best regards, Kelly King.

I bought my 4WD Patriot to have after my knee replacement surgery. It's so easy to get in and out of, which is especially important when my back goes out. I don't have to worry about falling into the driver's seat because it isn't low, and I don't have to pull myself out of it either. I absolutely love my Patriot!
