1995 Subaru Impreza problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 1995 Subaru Impreza problems

The Subaru Impreza is a reliable car, but like any vehicle, certain model years have been known to develop specific problems. The 1995 Subaru Impreza, in particular, has some common issues that owners have reported.

One of the most frequent problems with the 1995 Subaru Impreza is starting difficulties. Some owners have experienced issues with the car not starting, even though it turns over. This problem can sometimes be resolved by waiting for 15 minutes and then trying again. In some cases, replacing the coil has helped improve the starting performance, but it can still be challenging to start, especially if the gas pedal is touched during startup. Additionally, the car may not have full power until it has warmed up, which can take a few minutes.

Another common issue with the 1995 Subaru Impreza is a faulty gas gauge. After a rear-end collision, the gas gauge may no longer reach full and can drop below E with at least a quarter tank of gas left. This problem is likely due to a faulty gas sending unit, which would need to be replaced. However, it is unclear whether this issue would directly contribute to the starting problems mentioned above.

The 1995 Subaru Impreza's EJ20 engine is known to suffer from oil leaks from old and perished camshaft and valve cover gaskets and seals. Regularly checking oil levels and visually inspecting the engine for signs of oil leaks is essential. Worn piston rings can also be an issue, leading to excessive oil consumption and a smoky exhaust. This problem would require an expensive rebuild to fix.

Lastly, corrosion is a common problem in the 1995 Subaru Impreza, particularly in the rear wheel arches and rear strut turrets. This can affect the car's structural integrity, so it is crucial to inspect these areas for signs of rust.

In summary, the 1995 Subaru Impreza has some common problems, including starting difficulties, faulty gas gauges, oil leaks, worn piston rings, and corrosion. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Is the 1995 Subaru Impreza reliable?

Solid as a Rock

My 95 Impreza Wagon AWD has 85,000 miles on it and is very reliable. It is also great in snow. The car has the original exhaust system on it, which I find incredible, particularly since the car is mostly driven locally. I'd buy another one based on my experiences with this one.

What is the main problem with Subaru Impreza?

Common problems with the Subaru Impreza include engine issues, sudden and abrupt acceleration, transmission failure, and air bag problems. The 2008 and 2012 models of the Subaru Impreza should be avoided, but the rest have generally good reliability.

How reliable is an Impreza?

The Impreza's reliability score is ranked 33rd out of 36 compact cars by RepairPal, earning a 3.5 out of five-star rating. The average annual repair cost is $653, which isn't terribly high, but there is a 17% chance of severe repairs.

Is the 1995 Subaru Impreza all-wheel drive?

Subaru of North America initially offered the Impreza with the 1.8-liter engine only, with either front- or all-wheel drive; a 2.2-liter engine became optional for 1995. For the 1995 model year, the 1.8/EJ18 was available with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission on the 'base' model only.

Negative 1995 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Orlo Hackett 2024-07-05

The AWD is a great feature, but it may not be necessary for those living in climates with shorter winters. It's important to note that parts can be expensive, especially in the USA, and some may only be available from the dealer. Additionally, the AWD requires frequent alignment checks, and may become misaligned sporadically. I purchased my vehicle at 99K miles and it currently has 150K miles. While I have enjoyed driving it, the frequency and cost of maintenance, as well as the risk of it breaking down unexpectedly, is making me consider replacing it. The suspension is quite sensitive and can make even small bumps in the road feel jarring. Lastly, the cup holder is located in a less than ideal spot, as it can cover dashboard controls when in use.

Positive 1995 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Ayden Effertz 2024-11-23

This car has been a reliable ride for my family for over 8 years with no more than routine maintenance. It handles very well in the snow and mud seasons, even on dirt roads, and the body has held up well against road salt. The engine is well-designed for do-it-yourself maintenance. The only complaints are that the gas gauge stopped working a few years ago and the interior often fogs up, taking a long time to clear. It has become a little cramped since adding kids to the family, but otherwise, I would keep it forever!

  2. Casper Eichmann 2024-11-21

This is a great looking and well-functioning piece of machinery. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure and a desire to achieve their goals.

  3. Jon Littel 2024-10-29

I bought this car new in 1995 and it's still my primary and favorite car. The handling is unbeatable and it performs like a champ in the snow. It has required very little maintenance other than routine check-ups. This is actually my second Subaru and I hope it lasts forever. It has been driven for 126,000 miles, mostly on country roads. My only complaint is that I was too cheap to buy the larger engine, so sometimes I could use more power when the AC is on.

  4. Jayden Quigley 2024-10-18

The 1.8L engine, paired with the 5-speed transmission and AWD, provides adequate power. While it may not be a thrilling ride off the line, it has plenty of passing power at highway speeds. The AWD is especially useful in rainy or snowy conditions, providing a stable and confident driving experience. The back seat comfortably seats two people. The only downside is the gearbox, as the 1, 3, and 5 gears are spaced far apart and take some getting used to. However, the Impreza handles excellently and is a reliable car worth considering. With its variety of body styles, including wagon, sedan, and coupe, you can easily find a car that suits your needs.

  5. Maxime Shields 2024-10-06

This car has been a dream for me! It always runs smoothly and never slides. I drive it all the time and rarely go under 40, which makes the AWD a life saver.
