2016 Jeep Patriot problems
The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.
The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.
Design
In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.
The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.
An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.
Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.
All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.
The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.
For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.
The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
- VIN: 1C4NJPFB4GD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: CAMSHAFT and CRANKSHAFT position sensors keep failing. I have gotten these replaced at a local auto shop 4 times in the 3 years I've had the vehicle. Each time they're replaced the PCM is flashed but issue comes back a couple days to a week later either when coming to a stop at an intersection or when driving up to 50 miles per hour, the acceleration doesn't work properly and RPMS shoot down to zero and back up. Car has also shut off when coming to a stop under 5 MPH and sometimes starts up again. Engine light and TCS light both come on when either sensor fails, car runs rough or doesn't start resulting in a tow to a shop. This is a huge safety risk and can cause a crash at any time. VIN does not have recall, but has all the issues described in the recall.

Both incidents included my wife and passengers. That at least seems resolved. At 28900 miles or so we have been wrestling for the last year and some with intermittently all the warning lights coming on and now the car will occasionally lose all power while in motion. So we have taken it to the dealership where they say it requires a replacement of the electrical harness. Topping off, the driver seat rest safety mechanism deployed randomly this last week while the vehicle was parked in the driveway.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-17
- VIN: 1C4NJPBA6GD

- Summary: The check engine light came on. Checked it at an AutoZone. The error code was P0335, crankshaft position sensor. On the way to my mechanic, my vehicle stalled three time in 2 miles and had to pull over to a side. I felt lucky there were no vehicles behind me. Took it to a repair shop and the mechanic scanned it again. He told me to take it to a dealer because after entering my VIN, he was notified by his computer system that there is a recall notice out for this VIN. (S89) Called a Chrysler dealer but was told that there is no recall by the VIN. Called Chrysler corp and explained the situation. The rep said since the basic warranty expired, the repair service will not be covered under the recall. The engine was keep stalling and I had to repair the vehicle at the mechanics shop. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-31
- VIN: 1C4NJPBA3GD
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Last night was the 3rd time my family's safety was threatened by a malfunction in my 2016 Jeep Patriot (manual). When driving, the car started to stall out as if I'm changing gears badly, but wasn't doing so. Next, it stalled completely without any dashlight notices. I was forced to pop it out of gear to give some control to the steering (something I learned after the 1st time it happened). Then, I coasted to the side of the road while maneuvering moving traffic! The 1st 2 times this happened I was in local traffic and it almost caused an accident. Last night, I was in the center of I95 with rushing traffic. Terrifying! Each time the car has had to be towed and the crankshaft sensor has been the culprit. It is in the shop today (June 1, 2024) and that's the problem again! The dealership says the recall on Jeep Patriot crankshaft is not for my vehicle. Please help.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-12
- VIN: 1C4NJPBA1GD
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Th crankshaft Sensor failed multiple times. This happened 4 times within 2 days while I was merging onto the freeway, people behind me had to slam on their breaks or swerve to avoid hitting me. I took it to the shop and they identified it was the crankshaft sensor. They also explained that there is a recall in place for my year and model, but that my VIN indicated that "my jeep was made 2 weeks prior to the recall window of dates."
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-18
- VIN: 1C4NJRBB1GD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: On several different occasions my car has stalled in traffic and idled down for I couldn't drive had to pull over and turn it off and turn it back on to go again the check engine light then stability light will come on. Camshaft code I have fixed the cam and crankshaft sensors first time then it failed again so I changed them a second time now it's failed again .I almost got rear-ended a couple times very dangerous. Now my step button on the steering wheel and the horn quit working all of a sudden. I found out on the site of mopar that it is the electrical connector and terminal both cam sensors and crank sensors on certain vin numbers, all 2016 jeep patriots should have been included as others are having the same issues. I cannot afford to keep on putting money into this problem. This can be confirmed by my mechanic which replaced it twice. The dates this has happened are April 2023 worked for awhile then February 2024 happened again changed cam and crank sensors again. April 16 started failing again, limp mode have to pull over turn engine off turn it back on to go again. Every week at first now every few days. Engine light then traction stability light can't go over 10 miles per hour, pull over turn engine off turn it back on stability light goes off but engine light stays on for a day goes off the next day. I do not feel safe driving long distance anywhere and this can wear down your engine and vehicle life. I bought this car paid a lot of money for it for the comfort of knowing I would have something Dependable in my old age and can not keep on putting money into a problem that should have been on the recall list also. It only has 115,000 miles on it. I'm going to the Jeep dealer next week to see if Mopar can resolve this and pay for this issue. Also this happens if you're going 1 to 55 miles per hour reverse or forward doesn't matter.
ENGINE,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-08
- VIN: 1C4NJPFA2GD
- Components: ENGINE,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: My 2016 Jeep Patriot was taken in for intermittent stalling and my engine was stalling. This happened a few times. My car RPM went from 3 to 0 and I could not accelerate. I had to put the car in park and turn the car off and start it back up. The first time my car would not start back up right away. Luckily there was no one close enough behind me nor were I was going fast enough to be in an accident. I go it to a repair shop and was told my crankshaft and sensor would need to be replaced. My car is currently being serviced at Gandrud Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The phone number is (920) 468-1212. I previously looked up a recall for Jeep Patriots and there was a recall for crankshaft "Recall # [XXX]. Unfortunately my car was manufactured just after the date of [XXX] which is the cutoff of the recall. This recall is exactly what is currently being replaced on my car. I think this recall needs to be extended as this could have been a more serious accident and to help prevent more future accidents. My car should have been included in this recall. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-27
- VIN: 1C4NJRFBXGD
- Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Brought Jepp Patriot 2016 to a car shop in Suisun City, CA and they did a thorough diagnostics of my Patriot and couldn’t find out why my battery light was coming on. They checked the alternator and battery and they said they were fine. I was on a main street in Suisun City and as I was turning to the left the car died on me and completely shut off. It was hard to turn wheels and hard to push the brakes and I had people push me out of the street into a sidewalk near a house. I then decided to try start it and it started and I was able to make it to my daughter’s house. My son-in-law and granddaughter used my car and hasn’t had the battery light come on yet but that has happened to me several times where it would come on and turn back off. There was only one incident where it died on me so far and I’m hoping it won’t do it again especially on a busier street. I can’t afford to bring it to dealership to see if they can find the reason why the battery lights comes off and on sporadically. I don’t know if any other Jeeps are having this issue but am asked to report it in case it does to happen to someone else.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
- VIN: 1C4NJRFBXGD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Had Recall “fixed” just to have the supposedly fixed crankshaft sensor go bad and randomly stall when driving. They then say it was repaired even though it is having the same reason from the first recall. The fix is having intermittent electrical failure which causes it to stall with no warning no matter what speed you are going. It happened when I was going 20 and turning and again when I was on the highway driving 70. This is going to cause an accident. They said since the recall was already repaired I’m responsible for it
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-12
- VIN: 1C4NJPBA8GD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: There is some sort of electrical issue. Things keep going in and out: internal lights, cruise control, turn signals in front and back go out 6-9 times a year, ABS light stays on even after it was serviced, the radio goes in and out. I lose power while driving snd allow the car to sit for a day or two and it cuts back on like nothing ever happened.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-27
- VIN: 1C4NJPFA6GD
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My ABS module has gone out, giving me an UNSAFE Jeep Patriot, now with ZERO ABS or Traction control, major issue in Tampa driving! Apparently, according to the dealer here, they're on "galactic back order" for a few years now; I couldn't even find one at a used parts store in the area...had to resort to Ebay, having it installed at the dealership this week, who says they'll install it (Janet) but they won't guarantee they can program it and it will reset those dash lights?!?! They can't guarantee it? Then something needs to be figured out to GUARANTEE I have a working Jeep, complete with ABS and traction control. This is a major, according to several people I've spoken with but there's no recall? If something is on back-order for the dealership for years, something needs to be done, you have Jeep customers riding around unsafely in vehicles they purchased WITH safety features, Feel free to call for more details. [XXX] [XXX] P.S. I'll have a receipt after I go to the Jeep dealer this week, have it installed WITH NO GUARANTEE, but it'll be in...might not work, but it'll be in...and that's good enough?!?!?!?! POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-29
- VIN: 1C4NJRFB1GD
- Components: POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: from the day I purchased the vehicle on [XXX] of 2023. I immediately heard a rattling noise coming from the rear end of the vehicle. I also noticed that the transmission had been catching or slipping or missing whenever it transfers gears it is getting worse by the day I have taken it to the original dealership at MNF auto sales in Albuquerque and I have also taken it to the Larry Miller Jeep in Albuquerque New Mexico. They claim that the only thing wrong with the vehicle is the motor mounts after I left with my vehicle from being repaired, it continues to happen, and the transmission is getting worse day by day , I am afraid if I keep driving it much longer that it may cause an accident or damage the vehicle severely. I am trying to work with the dealership and they are telling me that multiple people have looked at it and that there’s nothing wrong with it however, that is false information , my vehicle has been in the service department for over 10 days at two different locations and basically the main dealership where I bought it from is telling me that they do not want to look at it and that it’s the type of transmission I have and there’s nothing wrong. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-14
- VIN: 1C4NJRFB0GD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving my vehicle on the highway the car turned off and I was unable to steer and/or turn the car back on. After I managed to get to the side of the road and then I managed to get it re-started. I took it to the dealership as it had a check engine light. The crankshaft electrical had thrown a code and I was advised to not drive my vehicle due to safety issues of the car "turning off" again without warning and that it could cause a crash. There were no previous warnings from my vehicle prior to this incident. I was given information from the Service Advisor for Chrysler recall S89-NHTSA 16V-907 but he stated that my vehicle didn't have that recall attached to it. The service advisor told me to report the issue to the NHTSA to get my vehicle inspected as he feels it should be included in the recall.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-15
- VIN: 1C4NJRFB8GD
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The site says my vin number is not affected by the recall 16V907000, however, I believe it is. My car loses power while driving exactly as it is described for this recall and it is unsafe. I am scared. I have almost been in several accidents due to this with my 3 year old son in the car.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-14
- VIN: 1C4NJRFB7GD
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I kept getting a check engine light on my dash even after taking it in for oil changes in the past year on and off and none of them caught what seemed to be the main issue. The check engine light would disappear once I got the oil change. I assumed everything was fine around April 2023, until December 2023 and apparently my check engine light turned back on. Finally after going to at least 4 more different auto shops I took it by Autozone to look at it again. Autozone claimed my code meant that my catalytic converter needed to be looked at or replaced. Now I never got a recall for it, but I did see that there has been several issues across the board about Patriot owners needing theirs to be replaced. That’s costly and it should’ve been replaced free of charge. My vehicle has been in optimal before this and I do keep up proper maintenance on my vehicle.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-30
- VIN: 1C4NJPBB3GD
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Several incidents when driving where the vehicle hesitates then the RPMs drop to zero and the Vehicle does not accelerate when gas pedal is pushed. Vehicle does not die each time just does not react to gas pedal being applied and does not increase in speed. Only dashboard light that comes on is the loss of traction. Incident causes driver to have to pull off road, place vehicle in park, turn off and on. Then can drive again.

It's not a high-priced vehicle, but I believe it's a great value for a lower-priced SUV. I priced several options and settled on the Patriot, which is perfect for my needs. I've had it for 6 months now and I'm very satisfied. If the reviews focused on the value rather than comparing it to high-priced vehicles (some of which also have very bad reviews), I think more people would appreciate its worth.

I've always dreamed of owning a Jeep, and now, at 35, I'm the proud owner of a Jeep Patriot. With multiple family members owning Jeeps, it almost feels like destiny. I've heard nothing but good things about Jeeps, but the cost always seemed out of reach. That is, until I saw the Patriot on a local car lot. It immediately took me back to my childhood days of admiring Jeeps. While I love the look of the Wrangler, I needed something more family-friendly and affordable. The Patriot exceeded my expectations on the test drive - it has the Jeep feeling, comfort, ride height, roominess, and storage space, all with a rugged yet luxurious interior. I could go on and on about the Patriot, but suffice it to say that it's the perfect fit for me. The 2.4L engine and 6spd Auto transmission make it a baby beast, and with the proper all-terrain tires, it's ready for anything. The Patriot hugs the road and takes curves with ease, even at high speeds. The interior warms up quickly, and the factory speakers are wonderful. The steering wheel is responsive, and braking is smooth. The instruments are easy to read and have that Jeep quality. On a recent long trip, I made it 375 miles on a full tank - pretty darn good for an SUV!The towing capacity of the Patriot is impressive for an in-line 4 cylinder, and I never once felt it falter while towing. It almost felt as though I wasn’t towing anything at all. Night time driving is a pleasure with the bright headlights, and even better when the brights are on. Having fog lamps is a huge plus. If you are considering a Jeep, or just want to spend a little on one, then the Patriot is definitely the way to go. One more thing, the modifications that you can do are limitless. Coming back after owning this Patriot for half a year and still going strong, I can confidently say that I love this Jeep! It has gotten me through everything from floods to off-road.

I recently purchased the Jeep Patriot Sport SE 4x4 model and traded in my 2011 Grand Cherokee with 140,000 miles on it. It's a relief to know that I can drive this 4x4 SUV without worrying about repair costs. The Patriot is not intended to be a Cherokee, but it still impresses me with its attention to detail, such as the heated seats and trim accents. The ride quality is good, with tolerable road noise, and the front seats are excellent. It's also easy to park and perfect for zipping around town. However, I do have a few nitpicks, such as the lower entrance height and the lower height of the roof area when the back hatch is lifted up. As someone who is 6ft tall, I tend to hit my head on these, but I just need to get used to it and be careful. The only real problem I have so far is the location of the USB port. It's not on the radio or even in the center console area, but in the glovebox! It's almost impossible to find, even for the dealer. It's located above the opening of the glovebox, up into the dash area, and you need to blindly reach up and feel around for it. It's a horrible design, and to use it, you need to drive around with the glovebox open and place your phone either in the glovebox or on the small shelf built into the dash. Despite this, I'm still happy with my purchase and hope to get years and years of use from it.

This vehicle is an absolute joy to drive! I personally special ordered mine with the Freedom Drive 2 'off road' package, CVT automatic transmission, and air conditioning. It may not have all the fancy electronic features like electric windows, seats, door locks, and navigation, but it has everything you need, including AM/FM, CD, Sirius radio, intermittent wipers, manually adjustable driver's seat (up, down, forward, back, tilt, recline), Bluetooth, rear wiper, cruise control, USB, folding rear seats, full-size spare tire (a REAL TIRE), steel underbody skid plates (not plastic like everyone else), tow hooks front and rear, roof rack, and a real 4x4! All of this for under $18K and it gets 24 MPG! The handling is great, very nimble, and the wet traction is very good. The cargo space is real nice for a compact SUV and it has been fantastic off-road or in mud, snow, and sand. I have four other vehicles, two of which are AWD (competitor), much more expensive, loaded with electronic wizardry, and downright boring to drive. The Patriot is the most fun to drive, although I wish it had more power with its 172 horses. But hey, I'm a guy, what did you expect?

I absolutely love this Jeep! Although I had a bad experience with a Liberty in the past and swore I'd never get a Jeep again, I decided to give it another chance with the 2016 Jeep Patriot 4x4 Latitude and I'm so glad I did. Overall, the gas mileage isn't great and the rear brakes tend to squeal when braking in reverse, which is something I need to have looked at sooner than later. However, I've heard that this is normal for these vehicles. This Jeep has completely restored my faith in Jeep again. I've gone on many adventures in it and it's always a blast. It handles really well no matter what I drive through - gravel, snow, puddles, mud - you name it! I live in an area with a lot of mountains and it's never let me down.

I drove this vehicle over 1,200 miles in just 3 days, mostly on the interstate. Unfortunately, the base model has some of the worst seats I've ever experienced in any vehicle. If your waist is anything over 28 inches, you'll be squirming to get out in just two hours. The seat cushion has two metal bars on the outer side that can be felt under about 1/2 inch of foam, making it very uncomfortable. Additionally, the wind noise is incredible; if you turn the radio off, that's all you'll hear. Lastly, the smallish tank means you'll be hitting the gas station in around 300 miles. Our low-fuel light went on at 271 miles from a full tank, averaging 70 MPH on the highway. However, if you're using this as a terrain vehicle or around-town SUV, then you'll be just fine. If you're planning a long road trip in this, please do yourself a favor and spend more time in it than just the typical 'round the block test drive from the dealership.

My lease can't end soon enough due to the numerous mechanical issues, faulty Bluetooth, and malfunctioning seatbelts. The locks wouldn't unlock from the inside, leaving my children trapped in the back seat. The gas mileage is poor and the acceleration is slow. In addition, the Bluetooth never connects, even with different phones, and the display message randomly changes to Spanish. Overall, I strongly advise against this vehicle unless you are an older driver who doesn't travel far.

I was really excited to get my first Jeep and go on adventures, but unfortunately, I've had a lot of trouble with it. The transmission started overheating at just 20,000 miles, and the electric system has been unreliable - sometimes my windshield wipers work, sometimes they don't. I've even been locked out of my car because the door locks stopped working. I've been stranded on the side of the road for half-hour increments when my car suddenly stops working, and it's dropped from 60-75 miles per hour to just 40 miles per hour without warning. I've had some scary moments with the brakes not working properly, almost causing accidents. I've taken it to the dealer multiple times, but unfortunately, they haven't been able to fix the issues. It's frustrating to see that many other people have had the same problems. This morning, my TMPS started beeping at me, even though none of my tires are low or flat. To top it all off, my seat belt doesn't consistently lock, which is concerning. Despite all of this, I'm hopeful that these issues can be resolved soon.

I drove this car every day for a year and found it to be a great choice for city driving and bad weather, especially in snowy conditions where it really shines. However, it could use some refinement and at higher speeds it can be a bit noisy and bouncy, especially on windy days. While it lacks parking assist, it does have Bluetooth connectivity, although the screen is not touch and has an old-school feel. It's worth noting that this car depreciates quite a bit, so if you're considering buying it, be prepared to keep it for a while.

My 2016 Jeep Latitude came with a rough idle when stopped and squeaky brakes. Despite what the dealer says, I know this is not normal for this model and there must be a solution. As an experienced car owner, I have never encountered these issues with any other new vehicle. I expressed my concerns to the service manager, but unfortunately, he did not provide a satisfactory response.
