The BMW X3 is an SUV manufactured by BMW since 2003, based on the BMW 5 Series platform. Now in its third generation, BMW markets the car as a Sports Activity Vehicle, the company's proprietary descriptor for its X-line luxury vehicles.

The first-generation X3 was designed by BMW in conjunction with Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria—who also manufactured all X3s under contract to BMW. BMW manufactured the second-generation X3 at their Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, United States. Starting with the third generation, BMW South Africa's Rosslyn plant began production of the X3, alongside the Spartanburg plant, after the facility underwent a major upgrade to prepare for the X3 production, replacing the long-running 3 Series production in the plant. About 76,000 units will be manufactured there annually.

The car was the first mid-size, premium SUV on the market. In 2008, BMW started competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (renamed GLC-Class since 2016), and numerous other SUVs in this segment. The X3 is smaller than the X5 and X6, and bigger than the X1 and the X2.

An all-electric variant is sold as the BMW iX3.

Common 2008 Bmw X3 problems

The BMW X3 Mk1, produced from 2004 to 2010, has a few common problems that owners have reported. One of the most significant issues is related to the six-cylinder diesel engine, which can develop a fault that makes the engine difficult to start in cold ambient temperatures and cause the idle speed to fluctuate when the engine is started.

Another common problem with the BMW X3 Mk1 is related to the manual gearbox. If your car has a manual gearbox, then you could encounter a problem in which the clutch seizes, which is going to take the shine off your day. A duff dual-mass flywheel is the cause of this issue.

The BMW X3 Mk1 can also have problems with the EGR cooler, which can cause the car to use too much coolant and emit clouds of white smoke. Additionally, the BMW X3 can, on occasion, emit an alarming grinding noise from the engine, which is caused by the timing chain and associated components. This issue should be sorted quickly to avoid further damage to the engine.

The petrol engine in the BMW X3 Mk1 can sometimes emit a rumbling noise. While this isn't a severe issue, it's one that you'll need to fix to ensure the long-term reliability of your vehicle.

Another common problem with the BMW X3 Mk1 is related to the engine mount bolts. The car can shear all four motor mount bolts in normal street driving, which is a significant safety issue. BMW has acknowledged this problem, but the company has not yet issued a recall for this issue.

The BMW X3 Mk1 can also have problems with the water pump. In some cases, the water pump can fail just two years after purchasing a brand new X3, leading to engine shutdown while driving and the need for a replacement at a high cost.

Finally, the BMW X3 Mk1 can have problems with the gas odometer, which may not show the actual gas in the tank, leading to premature engine failure. This issue should be covered under warranty, but it's essential to monitor the gas odometer regularly to avoid any potential engine damage.

In summary, the BMW X3 Mk1 has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including issues with the engine, manual gearbox, EGR cooler, timing chain, petrol engine, engine mount bolts, water pump, and gas odometer. Regular maintenance and monitoring of these components can help ensure the long-term reliability and safety of your BMW X3 Mk1.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-31
  • VIN: WBXPC93408W
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving my car and the car overheated due to a faulty pcv valve heater: 1.The purpose of the PCV heater is to prevent the PCV valve from freezing in cold ambient temperatures. Heated PCV valves are heated either by water or electric. Water heated systems use engine coolant to heat the valve to prevent freezing. Electrically heated systems use a heating element enclosed in the PCV valve to prevent the valve from freezing. Symptoms of my car Faulty water pump 2 A malfunctioning pcv valve heater, a clogged hose or PCV system or inoperative valve can increase oil consumption because pressure builds when the vapors in the crankcase aren't allowed to flow into the combustion chambers. That additional pressure can force oil past seals and gaskets Symptoms of my car Leaking oil pan gasket Lealing valve cover gasket 3 If the PCV valve and or pcv heater is faulty , the extra gunk can mess up a BMW X3’s spark plugs and increase oil consumption. Symptoms of my car Faulty spark plugs 4.Excessive heat or excessive oil due to malfunctioning pcv valve heater can cause a camshaft actuator to fail Symptoms of my car Faultt camshaft actuator

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-28
  • VIN: WBXPC93418W
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am working with a journalist at CNBC to get info about this death trap out since NHTSA is ignoring the issue completely. People are telling you their family members are injured and/or dying because 2008 BMW X3’s simply loose power at 70mph and transmission issues that make this care not accelerate, jerk, stall, etc. I have been helping contact other owners in an effort to see if they have any unreported issues and many say their complaints were also ignored. when you try to accelerate, the transmission "thinks" about what gear it should be in. the vehicle hesitates, stalls slightly, and creeps along slowly before second gear catches. the rpms are erratic when accelerating. very unpredictable when trying to accelerate. the hesitation is the main issue, especially when trying to pull out of an intersection across traffic. it can become a very scary situation when you want to accelerate and nothing happens. this is an ongoing problem. nothing in particular causes it to happen besides regular acceleration. the problem is intermittent and may disappear while driving. however, it will appear again for no real reason. a software update was performed in mid-july. the problem was still noticeable. on august 3rd, the vehicle was once again brought in for service work. the service manager came along for the drive and noticed the transmission problem. another 2008 bmw x3 that was on the lot was driven under the same driving conditions. the same issues with the transmission were noted. he told me that they will contact bmw to see if there are any service bulletins on how to correct the problem, but was unaware of any fix currently available. after two service calls the problem still persists without any fix as of yet.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-19
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: WBXPC93488W
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: ON DECEMBER 19, 2020 WHILE DRIVING WITH MY DRIVER'S SEAT HEATER ON WARMING MY SEAT DUE TO COLD WEATHER, I WAS ON MY WAY TO PICK UP MEDICATION AT THE PHARMACY WHEN I NOTICED A SHARP STING AND BURNING SENSATION ON MY LOWER RIGHT SIDE. I LOOKED DOWN AND NOTICED MY COAT ON FIRE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. I GOT OUT, FRANTICALLY PATTED MY COAT THAT WAS BURNING, AND LOOKED AT MY SEAT TO SEE IF THERE WAS A FIRE AND THERE WAS A HOLE WHERE THE HEATER HAD BURNED COMPLETELY THRU THE LEATHER SEAT. I GOT BACK IN, DIDN'T TURN THE HEATER ON, AND WHEN I ARRIVED HOME I DIDN'T DRIVE UNTIL THAT MONDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2020 I DROVE TO MY LOCAL BMW DEALERSHIP THAT REGULARLY SERVICES MY VEHICLE AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED AND ASKED IF THERE WAS A KNOWN RECALL OR ISSUES. HE EXPLAINED IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE HEATER SYSTEM IN THE SEATS FAILING AND CAUSING DAMAGE BUT CURRENTLY NO RECALLS FOR THE ISSUE. I ASKED HOW COULD THAT BE WITH THE DANGER INVOLVED? I EXPLAINED IT COULD HAVE BEEN TRAGICALLY WORSE IF I HAD CAUGHT FIRE AND COULDN'T GET IT OUT. I WAS LUCKY I FELT IT QUICKLY AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE. CHRIS AT CAIN BMW, NORTH CANTON, OHIO INSPECTED MU VEHICLE AND GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $1,495.00 TO REPLACE THE PART OF MY SEAT AFFECTED WITH A NEW HEATING SYSTEM AND REPAIR. I FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL DUE TO THE MANUFACTURER ALREADY KNOWING THERE'S AN ISSUE. I JUST WANT THEM TO RECALL VEHICLES THEY KNOW ARE AFFECTED AND REPAIR. OR AT LEAST VOLUNTARILY REPAIR VEHICLES THAT REPORT THE ISSUE. (JUST FOR CLARIFICATION: I WAS DRIVING THRU TOWN ON A STATE HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS) I KEPT THE COAT THAT CAUGHT FIRE JUST IN CASE IT WOULD BE NEEDED LATER.

Negative 2008 Bmw X3 car reviews

Hi there! We recently purchased our second BMW and unfortunately, we've had some issues with the quality of construction. We noticed that the front bumper, which is made of plastic, buckled and fell off when we went over a bump. We were surprised to learn from a BMW service agent that this is a common issue with the x3 model. Despite this setback, we're still enjoying our BMW and appreciate its other features. However, we do hope that BMW will address these construction issues in the future. Thanks for listening!

I have owned two X3s in the past 6 months. Although I had some issues with my 2007 model, BMW bought out my lease and I ordered another one. While they may be more expensive than Japanese vehicles, I believe they are still a great choice. Some of the issues I experienced included transmission hesitation, brake grabbing, and poor performance of the OEM tires in the snow. However, I was able to address these issues by replacing the tires and upgrading the radio. While the navigation system could be improved, I still find the X3 to be a great driving machine. While I understand that some may have had negative experiences, I would still recommend the X3 to others who are looking for a high-quality vehicle.

This is an update of an original posting. The BMW X3's engine and transmission response could be improved. Unfortunately, the dealer cannot remedy it as no more software updates are available from BMW. However, I do not think any more computer programs will solve the potentially dangerous throttle response. At times, it can be difficult to merge. The navigation system could also be improved, and I had to buy a Magellan unit. The handling is sub-par, and the Pirelli STR part may be to blame, but it is not up to BMW standards. Dealing with BMW corporate can be challenging, but they may be able to provide some assistance.

I leased this '08 X3 in December of '07. However, I regret the decision. Although the X3 is an excellent driver for a 4100lb small SUV, the interior is very small and cramped. After owning this vehicle for some time, I now know it has limited utility and horrid resale value. Other vehicles such as the Lincoln MKX are cheaper by thousands and more practical in every way.

Positive 2008 Bmw X3 car reviews

  1. Lesley Lind 2024-11-18

When considering this car, it's important to note that it handles incredibly well and has great acceleration with no hesitation. It's definitely a fun car to drive. The fuel efficiency is around 21 mpg. However, there are some issues with the electronics. The upgraded stereo, which costs $900 to install through BMW, is not worth it. The Sirius antenna continuously drops the signal and the readout is limited and annoying. Additionally, the radio only has 6 presets. The GPS is also difficult to use and the manual is not helpful. It's unfortunate that so much space is allotted to longitude, latitude, and altitude. But overall, this car is a great choice for those who prioritize handling and acceleration. Did I mention how incredibly well it handles?

  2. Francesco Bergnaum 2024-11-08

The car was purchased in March and it has proven to be a great investment. Its attractive looks and excellent features make it stand out, although the navigation system could use some improvement. In comparison to Honda's navigation system, it falls short. The car's fuel average is around 17-18, which is impressive.

This has been a great car so far! I haven't had any mechanical issues. The BMW engine is so smooth and delivers power when you need it. The suspension works really well too, providing amazing road feel while still being able to absorb Chicago's notorious potholes better than any car I've driven recently. The transmission has been good so far, and when I need immediate passing power, I switch from D to SD for a quick burst of speed.

  4. Samson Lowe 2024-10-22

This car has been fantastic! It has had minimal issues over the past 8 years.

  5. Brent Connelly 2024-10-15

What a fantastic experience this little SUV has been from the very beginning. It still brings a smile to my face every time I get behind the wheel. It handles the road like a dream, accelerates quickly away from lights (or as quickly as you'll get in an SUV), and is incredibly comfortable. We opted for Alpine White with the sport package and loaded it up with options. Be prepared for a bit of sticker shock though!
