1993 Plymouth Sundance problems

The Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance are compact 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks that were introduced for the 1987 model year by the Chrysler Corporation. For 1991, a 2-door convertible variant was added to the Shadow lineup; this bodystyle was not offered by Plymouth. The Sundance/Shadow replaced the Omni/Horizon models of their respective marque.

The first vehicle rolled out of Sterling Heights Assembly on August 25, 1986. In late 1988, production of the Mexican market version called the Chrysler Shadow began at Toluca Car Assembly. The Shadow/Sundance was also sold in Europe from 1988 to 1991 as the Chrysler ES. Production ended on March 9, 1994, with the Shadow/Sundance being replaced by the Dodge / Plymouth Neon.

Design

The Shadow/Sundance employed a variant of the K-car platform, the P-body, which was based on a combination of the Dodge Daytona's suspension (alongside some of its interior styling cues) with a shortened version of the Dodge Lancer's body. It had originally been intended as a direct replacement for the earlier Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon, but with the economy segment becoming more crowded after the recent introductions of Hyundai (and Yugo) to the US market, Chrysler chose to make the car a bit more substantial. The P platform, being a cut down version of the regular K platform, was also a bit heavier than the competition. The lineup also had more equipment across the board than expected for the class, at least until the 1991 introduction of the stripped-down America model.

While they appeared to have a trunk, it was actually a hatchback. Chrysler considered this a special feature and advertising literature referred to it as "hidden hatchback versatility"; the relatively large storage capacity of these vehicles was a major selling point for the company. The Peugeot 309 which had been developed to replace the European Chrysler Horizon used a similar layout. While mechanically identical, the Sundance and Shadow were differentiated by their front grill, which featured brand consistent designs, Dodge using a crosshair design and Plymouth an "egg crate" design. They also had different tail lamps. In its final year, the Shadow featured the new Dodge ram's head emblem on the hood, replacing the corporate pentastar.

In the original lineup, the three-door only Shadow ES was the sportiest model, only available with the turbocharged engine and with wider rims and tires than other models.

Common 1993 Plymouth Sundance problems

The Plymouth Sundance, introduced in 1987, was a popular car known for its affordability and durability. However, like any vehicle, it had its fair share of common problems that owners frequently reported.

  • Poor Idle: One of the most common issues with the Plymouth Sundance's 2.2 and 2.5-liter engines was poor idle. This could be due to using low-quality gasoline or a dirty fuel system. The recommended solution is to use better gasoline with a detergent additive and replace the spark plugs, rotor, and possibly the spark plug wires.
  • Convertible Mounts: The convertible models of the Plymouth Sundance had a unique problem with the passenger-side mount. This mount, which is fluid-filled, is only available through Mopar and costs $165. The reason for its difference in the convertibles is still unclear.
  • Recall: A recall was issued in 1991-1994 for two-door P-cars, including the Sundance, due to a potential issue with the recliner mechanism. One of the bolts may break, causing the seat back to recline without warning.
  • Handling: Poor handling was a common complaint among Sundance owners, often due to the use of low-quality tires. Replacing the original Invicta tires with high-performance all-weather tires, such as Yokohama Avid MD-H4s, significantly improved handling.
  • Rattle from the Back of the Car: Loose screws holding the plastic trim onto the top of the hatch could cause a rattling noise. It is essential not to overtighten these screws, as it may bend the sheet metal. Instead, tighten them just enough to secure the trim.
  • Loud Buzzing Noise from the Rear: A loud buzzing noise from the rear, particularly noticeable when the rear seat is down, is typically the fuel pump. This noise is normal and should not be a cause for concern.
  • Hissing from the Steering: Post-1992 models of the Plymouth Sundance may experience hissing from the steering. This is due to a redesign of the steering rack and is not a cause for concern.
  • Water Leak Inside the Car: Water leaks inside the car are most likely due to a blocked AC condensation tube or a blocked cowl drain. Checking and clearing these drains should resolve the issue.
  • Oil Seepage from the Valve Cover: Oil seepage from the valve cover onto the spark plugs is a common issue with the Plymouth Sundance. The best solution is to have a good mechanic repair it, as Chrysler's recommended fix may not be effective.
  • Oil Puddle on the Manual Transmission Casing: A TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) exists for transmission fluid (oil) leaking from the transaxle vent. Chrysler may fix this issue even if the vehicle is out of warranty. It is recommended to contact the dealer for assistance.
  • Rattle from the Interior: A rattle from the interior, particularly from the center console, can be resolved by removing the console and applying window insulating foam tape on all metal-to-plastic surfaces. Be sure not to interfere with the cables.
  • Speedometer Stopped Working: Pre-1993 models of the Plymouth Sundance may experience a stopped speedometer due to lost contact between the speed sensor and the wire that runs to the computer. Consulting the dealer or the FAQ, part 4, can provide a solution.
  • Flapping Noise: A flapping noise at speeds of 30-35 mph and higher can be caused by a loose flap or flange that covers the top of the headlight. Securing this flap should resolve the issue.
  • Creaking Noise: A creaking noise from the right or left side can be caused by worn or loose sway bar bushings. Replacing these bushings should resolve the issue.

WHAT ASSURANCE DO I HAVE NOW FROM CHRYLSER AS A CONSUMER ? Negative 1993 Plymouth Sundance car reviews

  1. Camden Emard 2024-04-13

Although it was the first car I ever owned, I regret purchasing it. My parents got it used in 2004 with 115,000 miles, and unfortunately, it has been nothing but trouble since then. The air conditioner, back left speaker, driver's side window, and passenger side door are all in need of repair. Additionally, the paint is peeling off, and there is a rust hole clear through the front of the hood. Unfortunately, it is not a reliable car at all, and I have been stranded on the side of the road multiple times.

  2. Kenneth Bosco 2024-03-03

I owned this car for 2 1/2 years and it had 104000 miles on it when I bought it. Although it had many problems, including bad exhaust, gas tank, no A/C, electrical, rack and pinion, computer chip, and brakes, I was impressed with how well it protected me in a car accident. I ran into a van that had run a stop sign, but the airbag went off and the car crumpled enough to cushion the impact, resulting in absolutely no interior damage. Overall, it's a good small car, but be prepared for potential problems.

  3. Richie Davis 2024-01-11

When purchasing a used car, it is important to have a mechanic inspect it to ensure its quality. In my recent experience with a 1991 Sundance, the transmission failed due to lack of maintenance from the previous owner. While I do not believe that Chrysler/Plymouth produces transmissions that last as long as other brands, it is important to note that proper maintenance can greatly extend the life of any car. Based on my personal experience, I would advise avoiding high mileage, poorly maintained Sundances. As a result of my recent experience, I have decided to sell my Sundance after only 7 days of ownership.

Positive 1993 Plymouth Sundance car reviews

  1. Trenton Bernhard 2024-11-15

Back in the spring of 1991, I was lucky enough to pick up a brand new black cherry Sundance as a company car. It was a fantastic little car with peppy performance, comfortable bucket seats, and a cool floor-mounted shifter with a center console. The car even had rear folding seats and a hatchback, which came in handy when I needed to move a full-sized couch. With gas mileage in the low 20s, it was a practical choice too. I absolutely loved that little Plymouth and had lots of fun in it, even doing some work on the go. The only issue I had was when I accidentally scraped the passenger side door against a tree - oops! If you're lucky enough to find one of these in decent condition, I highly recommend buying it.

  2. Hudson Konopelski 2024-10-26

Hi there! I loved reading your story about your 93 Sundance! It sounds like it was the perfect car for you and your wife at the time. It's amazing that the 2.2 engine never let you down and that you were able to sell it 11 years later with 155,000 miles. Although the air conditioning lasted about 9-10 years, it's impressive that the car was still running strong. It's great to hear that you felt like you got your money's worth and that it was a good value for what you paid. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Santiago Quigley 2024-09-16

I have been extremely satisfied with this car as it has never let me down and has taken me everywhere I needed to go, even through the treacherous Michigan ice and snow where I passed SUVs that had slid off the road. Although it has started to rust along the edges and I had to replace the head gasket and rebuild the engine once, I have had wonderful transportation for over 13 years with incredible mileage, all for the original price of $8,600 plus ~$2200 for the above mentioned repairs. This was my first car, bought with my 're-adjustment money' after returning from the Peace Corps, and I plan to keep driving it until the very end. I hope it lasts until 200,000 miles, by which time I hope there will be a selection of affordable USA made hybrids!

  4. Ryleigh Cremin 2024-09-16

I had to replace everything from the rear axle three times, the transaxle twice, the CV joints 4 times, and it was in the shop with constant mechanical and electrical problems. Despite taking care of the car and being on-time with maintenance, the engine blew and I had to sell it to a junkyard. It is worth noting that the car was cosmetically exceptional inside and out until it finally died.

  5. Cleve Goodwin 2024-06-04

The Plymouth Sundance/Duster and Dodge Shadow are fantastic cars! They cost much less than other cars in their class, and they have an available 3.0L V6 that packs a punch. This engine is very reliable, and I have had no major problems with my Duster since I bought it. Additionally, I have not driven a car in this class that is more comfortable.
