The Jeep Gladiator is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by the Jeep division of Stellantis North America (formerly FCA US). It was introduced at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 28, 2018, and went on sale in the spring of 2019 as a 2020 model. Based on the same platform as the Wrangler JL, the Gladiator is Jeep's first pickup truck since the Comanche was discontinued in 1992.

Jeep Gladiator is also being marketed in Australia and New Zealand as the first markets outside the Americas. It is also officially available in North America, parts of South America, parts of Europe, China, Japan, South Korea, parts of Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Israel, and South Africa.

History

The vehicle's name harkens back to the original Jeep Gladiator, made in 1962 until 1988 and known as the J-Series after 1971. Jeep considered reviving the Gladiator name alongside Comanche and most commonly Scrambler, as well as simply using a new name, before deciding on Gladiator, feeling it fits the truck the best.

A two-door version of a Jeep Scrambler pickup based on a lengthened Wrangler was shown in 2003 at the National Automobile Dealers Association meeting.

In late-2004 the Jeep Gladiator concept was introduced. The 2005 Gladiator Concept did not feature a removable roof, but had removable doors and a pickup bed. It also previewed the design of the upcoming Jeep Wrangler (JK). The Gladiator concept was powered by a 3.0 L Common-Rail Diesel (CRD) engine produced by VM Motori (similar to the one used in some models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee), mated to a manual transmission, and four-wheel-drive. It featured functional rear mini-doors, and rear seating. The Gladiator concept featured a green-on-gray color scheme for both the exterior and interior.

Common 2021 Jeep Gladiator problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2021 Jeep Gladiator, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Engine Problems:
    • Some owners have experienced stalling, hesitation, or misfiring while driving. This can be caused by various factors such as faulty spark plugs, fuel injectors, throttle body malfunction, fuel pump, or engine control module issues. Reflashing the PCM with updated software can resolve some of these engine-related issues.
  2. Transmission Concerns:
    • The automatic transmission in the Jeep Gladiator has been reported to have issues with slow shifting, jerking, and overheating during off-road use. Recalls have been issued by Jeep to address these problems, including instances of leaky transmissions even at low miles.
  3. Braking, Steering, and Suspension Challenges:
    • While the brakes are generally reliable, some drivers have reported noisy and shattering sensations while braking, which can be concerning. Suspension bushings wearing out quickly, leading to clunking or rattling noises, have been noted. Steering issues, including the "death wobble," where the truck sways at higher speeds, have also been reported.
  4. Electrical System Malfunctions:
    • Owners have reported issues with the radio, air conditioning, power windows, infotainment system, and turn signals. Problems like freezing, crashing, or non-functional turn signals can be frustrating and difficult to diagnose, potentially requiring warranty coverage for repairs.
  5. Windshield and Glass Concerns:
    • Some owners have faced issues with cracked or chipped windshields, especially when driving on rough terrain. Additionally, leaky back windows have been reported by several Gladiator owners.
  6. Oxygen Sensor Problems:
    • Oxygen sensor issues have been highlighted in the 2021 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, affecting engine performance, fuel efficiency, emissions, and potentially leading to catalytic converter failures. Faulty oxygen sensors can trigger engine check lights and cause rough idling, misfiring, and decreased acceleration.

These problems reported by owners of the 2021 Jeep Gladiator highlight various issues ranging from engine and transmission concerns to braking, steering, suspension, electrical system malfunctions, and oxygen sensor problems. Addressing these issues promptly and through proper maintenance can help ensure a smoother and safer driving experience with the Jeep Gladiator.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-10
  • VIN: 1C6JJTEG3ML
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2021 Jeep Gladiator at 43K miles brought in for oil change. Lube tech noticed that the right rear axle seal was leaking fluid with fluid sprayed over the inner wheel and nearby assembly. FSA Customer Satisfaction Notification states to reference CSN 26A and that the recommended remedy is to replace the right rear shaft. If not repaired/replaced, this could lead to damage to the transmission. I contacted my local dealership who informed me that my vehicle had no open recalls, even though Jeep forums state the problem is affecting thousands of Gladiators like mine.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
  • VIN: 1C6JJTAM4ML
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: This vehicle has a repeating electronic problem involving the warning lights and function of abs, traction control, four-wheel drive system, forward collision warning, and both adaptive and normal cruise control. When the steering wheel is turned slightly right, like when navigating a highway curve, those warnings illuminate and the vehicle disables cruise control. It also has a lack of power due to what seems to be the traction control system activating. Also, the brake system has a shutter in the pedal and has reduced effectiveness for a few moments until the ABS and traction control systems stop function. I have taken the vehicle into a dealer, Larry H Miller CDJR in West Bountiful, Utah when it started to show this problem as I was leaving Portland. They replaced the front left ABS wheel speed sensor. This did not rectify the problem. I then took it to Gene's Chrysler in Fairbanks, Alaska upon my return home. That shop failed to warranty the repair, and charged additional diagnosis fees on top of correcting the Z96 high pressure fuel pump recall. They advised replacing the clock spring in the steering wheel that provides electrical connection to the buttons and is integrated in all of those safety systems. Prior Jeep models have had a consistent problem with the clock spring failing and a recall was issued due to affecting airbag deployment from the steering wheel. I am concerned that this clock spring related issue may lead to reduced braking effectiveness, loss of power at speed to react to traffic, and failure to deploy the airbag in an accident. The dealerships will not warranty this repair.

The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the "Rear Axle Locked" message was flashing on the instrument panel. Upon investigation, the contact discovered an unknown recall for the rear axle fluid leak. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 60,080.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
  • VIN: 1C6HJTAG1ML
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The vehicle would not turn over, but the battery came on. The vehicle wouldn’t allow me to turn off the battery and stayed in the position while I waited for the tow truck. By the time the vehicle made it to the dealership they refused to do a diagnostic and attempted to charge me for battery replacement even though it was due to a car malfunction. While the care was glitching the dash displayed messages about the stability control module and transmission were out and malfunctioning. If I were to be driving, the vehicle would have shut down while I was driving.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-26
  • VIN: 1C6HJTAGXML
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My 2021 Jeep Gladiator received the 19A Clutch Recall in late June 2024. The recall was issued due to clutch pressure plates disintegrating, blowing a hole in the transmission housing, and causing vehicle fires. Upon return, my vehicle was unable to drive smoothly. After further investigation, I determined that if the clutch and throttle were operated concurrently, the engine would shut off. The engine would shut off anywhere between 1 MPH and highway speed causing issues with operating hydraulically assisted systems (power brakes and power steering). In practice, this led to the engine shutting off between most gear shifts causing a jerky driving condition due to the engine needing to clutch start itself. I did not test how well the steering or brakes worked while the engine was shut off due to safety concerns. While pulling into my driveway, I momentarily lost control of the vehicle when the engine died while traveling at low speed and with the steering wheel turned. I lost power steering and was unable to correct the direction in travel before driving onto my lawn. I returned the vehicle to the dealership and replicated the issue for them. They confirmed the issue was present. The issue was determined to be a faulty ECU flash causing the issue. A revised flash was made available to dealerships 7/12/24 and installed in my vehicle 7/15/24. Component that Failed: Faulty ECU flash Safety: The vehicle's engine would shut off while moving Reproduced by Dealership: Yes Inspected by Manufacturer: No Warning lights or messages: No Additional Info: I have been in contact with other owners with the same issue. This faulty ECU flash seems to only have had this effect on 2021 models. The following is personal input. I hope the irony is not lost on you all that a safety recall fix caused an arguably more pronounced and repeatable safety problem. Additionally, I notified Jeep Cares that this could kill or injure someone and they told me to send Chrysler a letter.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
  • VIN: 1C6HJTFG5ML
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The LED center high-mounted stop lamp, more commonly called the 3rd brake light, failed. A silent code was available to be read by only the dealership service; there were no visible warnings on the vehicle nor any owner online dashboards. In fact, the owner online dashboard had green across the board and clearly stated no issues were detected. The real issue here, and the reason for this submission, is that this LED should not have failed at less than three years and reviewing online many people have been having the same exact issue. Without any visible warnings to the driver, I have no idea how long it has been out. An investigation into a potential recall should be initiated as this is starting to sound like a manufacture defect that is affecting a legally required center high-mounted stop lamp. Minimally, there should be a software update to inform the driver of this error code and not have it be silent such that only a dealership service center is able to read it.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-21
  • VIN: 1C6JJTAM8ML
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Mopar recall Z96 posted October, 13th 2022 for high pressure fuel pump. My local dealership stated parts for replacement of the high pressure fuel pump did not become available until November of 2023. They inspected my vehicle November 21st, 2023 and determined the high pressure fuel pump was to be replaced under mopar recall Z96. Dealership ordered parts at that time. On to March 4th, 2024. I reach out to local dealerships service and parts departments. Not all parts had been received and there was no understanding of when the rest of the necessary parts would arrive. May 7th, 2024. It is now nearly 1 year and 7 months since this recall was released and nearing 6 months since my local dealership stated they ordered parts to replace the fuel pump. My local dealership continues to have no understanding or intention of securing the remaining parts necessary to complete this recall. This amount of time is unreasonable for a part that if it fails will cause loss of engine power and may cause a fatal crash.

I experienced a cylinder misfire during the first few months of owning my 21 Mojave, which was caused by a faulty spark plug. Currently, I am facing issues with the front Fox shocks, but fortunately, they are under warranty. Despite these setbacks, I am still considering my options and have not yet decided to sell. While I am disappointed with the issues I have faced, I acknowledge that the seats are not as comfortable as those in a Honda mini van.

This truck is a great option, although it may require more effort to drive than some of its competitors, especially in high winds. While off-roading, it performed well. However, I did experience some difficulty switching from 4WD to 2WD, as the lever was initially stuck.

On the first day after delivery, I noticed a rattle coming from inside the dash when accelerating over 40 mph. It sounded like a loose screw vibrating on a tin plate. Unfortunately, the dealer needs 3 days to investigate and there is no loaner vehicle available. On the second day after delivery, a rock hit the door hinge while I was driving at 25 mph and took two eraser-sized chunks of paint off, down to the bare metal. It's crazy because I had a Ram before and backed into a mailbox once without a scratch. When inspecting the paint loss, I noticed that all of the hinges have crazing lines already. There has to be a factory defect in paint adherence on this area of the vehicle. I'm starting to doubt whether I should even install the running boards I purchased. After a week, the Gladiator is showing worse signs than my last truck that I drove for 3 years. It's frustrating, but I'm hopeful that the dealer will be able to resolve these issues soon.
