2020 Jeep Gladiator problems
The Jeep Gladiator is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by the Jeep division of Stellantis North America (formerly FCA US). It was introduced at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 28, 2018, and went on sale in the spring of 2019 as a 2020 model. Based on the same platform as the Wrangler JL, the Gladiator is Jeep's first pickup truck since the Comanche was discontinued in 1992.
Jeep Gladiator is also being marketed in Australia and New Zealand as the first markets outside the Americas. It is also officially available in North America, parts of South America, parts of Europe, China, Japan, South Korea, parts of Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Israel, and South Africa.
History
The vehicle's name harkens back to the original Jeep Gladiator, made in 1962 until 1988 and known as the J-Series after 1971. Jeep considered reviving the Gladiator name alongside Comanche and most commonly Scrambler, as well as simply using a new name, before deciding on Gladiator, feeling it fits the truck the best.
A two-door version of a Jeep Scrambler pickup based on a lengthened Wrangler was shown in 2003 at the National Automobile Dealers Association meeting.
In late-2004 the Jeep Gladiator concept was introduced. The 2005 Gladiator Concept did not feature a removable roof, but had removable doors and a pickup bed. It also previewed the design of the upcoming Jeep Wrangler (JK). The Gladiator concept was powered by a 3.0 L Common-Rail Diesel (CRD) engine produced by VM Motori (similar to the one used in some models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee), mated to a manual transmission, and four-wheel-drive. It featured functional rear mini-doors, and rear seating. The Gladiator concept featured a green-on-gray color scheme for both the exterior and interior.

Common 2020 Jeep Gladiator problems
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues span across various components of the vehicle, including the engine, transmission, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, and windshield.
One of the most common problems is with the 3.6-liter gas engine, which has been reported to experience stalling, hesitation, or misfiring while driving
. This can be caused by faulty spark plugs, fuel injectors, throttle body malfunction, fuel pump, or the engine control module. An updated version of the software is available to reflash the PCM, which should fix the issue. Additionally, the plastic oil filter cooler is prone to leaking, and there are aftermarket aluminum solutions for a more permanent fix.
The transmission, particularly the six-speed manual transmission option, has also been known to have issues. Some drivers have reported that the transmission can be slow to shift and even jerk when it does. There have also been reports of the transmission overheating during off-road use, which can lead to serious problems. Jeep has issued two separate recalls to address this issue
Braking, steering, and suspension are generally reliable on the Gladiator, but some drivers have reported noisy brakes with a shattering sensation, which can feel like the brakes are failing or not working properly. There are also reports of excessive shuttering in the front suspension, which can lead to the death wobble problem, where the truck starts swaying at higher speeds, making it difficult for the driver to control the vehicle
Some Jeep Gladiator owners have also reported issues with their electrical systems, such as problems with the radio, air conditioning, power windows, and the infotainment system. These systems have been reported to freeze or crash, which can be frustrating for drivers. Additionally, there have been reports of faulty wiring, blown fuses, or defective alternators causing issues with the turn signals, which can stop working or blink rapidly for no apparent reason
In the last few years since the truck has been launched, Jeep has issued over 60 bulletins to update software and wiring on this truck, indicating that they are trying to take care of these issues. However, the windshield has been a common issue for some owners, with reports of it cracking or chipping easily, especially when driving on rough terrain. This was most prevalent on the 2020 models, but Jeep has since introduced a new windshield made out of Gorilla Glass, which seems to have helped.
There are also many owners with leaky back windows, and the rear driveshafts may have been incorrectly assembled without grease in the monoblock joint, which can lead to clunking or rattling noises while driving.
In summary, while the 2020 Jeep Gladiator is a capable off-road vehicle, it has been reported to have several common problems across various components. Owners should be aware of these issues and consider the potential costs and inconveniences associated with them before purchasing this vehicle.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-27
- VIN: 1C6HJTAG1LL
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Multiple issues occuring starting (documented) at 22,719 miles (09/27/2022) - stop/start and remote start had not been functioning properly - vehicle died. Required towing to dealer. Both batteries were dead. Upon leaving dealer they had not reconnected stop/start. Fast forward to 05/04/2024 and vehicle once again unchargeable to start. Took warrantied battery back to dealer and they wanted us to tow it there to check. We spent 350.91 to replace ourselves due to a lack of confidence with Jeep. Then on 05/20/2024 took it to a 4x4 center and discovered multiple issues with vehicle from manufacturing and dealer work. To start -- 1) the rear differential pinion seal is leaking 2) the power stearing box is aluminum and showed signs of flex and contact 3) dealer installed lift was incomplete leaving the front axle off center (visually observed about a 3" offset).
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-31
- VIN: 1C6JJTBGXLL
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The factory sunroof on my 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon detached at highway speeds. The springs that hold tension on the clamps that secure the soft top to the frame, unbeknownst to me at the time, lost tension. While travelling down the highway the soft top clamps loosened from a small bump and the wind caught the soft top itself. I immediately reacted, reached up, and tried to bring the soft top back down as I was frantically slowing down on the highway and merging right. The soft top ripped from my hand cutting it open and smashed into the rear of the vehicle. When the soft top smashed into the rear of the vehicle several hinges broke, luckily one was still holding the soft top from completely falling off. This obviously poses a very large safety risk as the soft top could have flown into another vehicle disabling it or much worse; causing injury or death. The problem has been reported by others through online forums and the consensus is that the springs inside the clamps weaken over time leading to this issue. The soft top was not inspected by the dealer or anyone else, they did not care to investigate. The dealer only replaced the soft top after more than a month of waiting for parts to arrive. I have informed Jeep Cares and Jeep Customer Care over the phone; however, they did not seem interested in actually fixing the issue. Jeep instead directed me the dealership only to have the soft top replaced. I am now following up with NHTSA regarding this issue as the other avenues have yielded no results. It should be noted that in my forum post I ended up paying more than the $500 deductible, there was constant confusion between the dealership and insurance, the invoice is attached. - Summary: Rear window leaks badly, when raining causes the interior to fog up making it difficult to see. Turning on A/C clears most the fog, but the rear window is still not clear enough to see what's behind or on the sides when making lane changes. This is not an isolated incident, Jeep repairs with the same process which leaks again after a few months. Need a permanent fix to this design flaw.
STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-25
- VIN: 1C6HJTAG6LL
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Regarding my 2020 Jeep Gladiator. Rear Window Cracks Around Rear Glass Frame. On [XXX], I took my Gladiator to Jeep dealership to repair leak in roof that wasn't covered under warranty. It was in the seal of the roof panels which they said many Gladiators are experiencing. Paid $402 out of pocket to have those seals repaired. At that service visit, the service attendant advised me that they are aware of a structural defeat causing cracks around the seal of the rear window. They said the whole rear window needs to be replaced at an out of pocket cost to the consumer of $1800. Jeep Warranty nor our extended warranty covers any of it. Also there is no recall for it! They told us to call Jeep to complain as they didn't think this was right. They were going to call as well. I called the number they gave me 1-877-426-5337 and the rep said it wasn't covered but gave me a case number and said he would pass on our complaint. Being a defect and a large window, it could most definitely be a safety issue and we feel Jeep should issue a recall. I believe many consumers out there are beginning to have this same issue. The Gladiator first came out in 2019 and issues with them are just coming to light. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-10
- VIN: 1C6HJTFG9LL
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: 2020 Jeep Gladiator purchased new experienced violent shaking of the steering wheel and partial loss of control at highway speed on March 10, 2024 with the odometer at 27,500 miles. The shaking is commonly referred to as a "death wobble" incident. While driving at approximately 60mph on the interstate the vehicle became unstable on uneven pavement and began to shake so violently it nearly resulted in an accident and we had to immediately pull off the highway into the median. After a quick inspection no damage was found, the death wobble incident happened again the same day to a lesser degree and vehicle seems to be more unstable each use. Vehicle is available for inspection. The death wobble is so severe enough to cause an accident due to loss of steering control and suspension instability as well as injure the drivers hands and arms due to violent movement of the steering wheel. Dealer service is being scheduled, no further inspection has taken place by police or manufacturer. There were no indicators or warning lights prior to the incident.

This vehicle is really cool!

This is exactly as advertised. Although it may not be the best choice if you're looking for a smooth ride on the highway, it is an extremely capable off-road vehicle. We've tackled several trails, including Black Bear Pass, and it has exceeded our expectations. Overall, we love it. In fact, after 3 years of use, we can confidently say that this Gladiator has been far more reliable than our Honda Pilot and CRV. We were initially hesitant to make the purchase due to concerns about reliability, but we are now loving the glady!

I was in need of a truck to tow my side by sides but didn't want to break the bank on a full size truck. Luckily, my Gladiator can tow up to 6k lbs and my trailer, which is loaded at only 3k lbs, is towed with ease. It's a blast to drive, especially in the summer when we remove the doors and tops. Plus, the heated seats and wheel make it a cozy ride in the winter. The mileage is pretty good too, ranging from 19 mpg in the winter to 24 mpg in the summer. So far, I haven't had any issues with it at 16k miles, and it's a 21 sport s. I'm excited to see how it holds up over time!

One of the best purchases I could have ever made, and built just as I wanted!

This jeep has been to the dealership multiple times. The first time was for the right side head gasket. Unfortunately, it seems to be running rough again, with electrical misfires on multiple cylinders. We really love this truck, but we're worried that it might become costly to keep once it's out of warranty. It's such a shame.

I recently purchased a 2021 Gladiator Sport with the 8-speed auto trans and Heavy Duty Tow Package. Unfortunately, when I attempted to tow my 21 ft. Bennigton Pontoon Boat (3000 lbs) trailer boat and motor, I encountered some difficulties. The truck seemed to struggle in every gear and had trouble getting out of 4th gear. Even when I tried manual shifting, it still didn't perform as expected. Although the truck is rated to tow 7300 lbs, I was disappointed with its performance. As someone who has owned 5 Jeeps, including a Call of Duty Rubicon that tows better, I was extremely disappointed. Additionally, I noticed that the truck tends to wander, which was a problem that I had read about in various write-ups. Overall, I feel that my $45000.00 investment was not worth it.

Hello! I recently purchased a brand new 2022 Jeep Gladiator Mojave edition and it's absolutely beautiful. I had to part ways with my 2017 Jeep Chief Edition, which was a great car with only 13,000 miles. Unfortunately, my new Gladiator stopped working after only 1,900 miles and I had to have it towed to the local Jeep dealership. It was quite an experience getting it into Neutral, but we managed it after about an hour. However, I was disappointed to hear that the dealership was too busy to look at it for 3 more days. I even received an email from Jeep Wave checking on me, but unfortunately, I didn't receive a response when I called them back. This has been the worst service experience I've ever had with any car, and this is my 4th JEEP! The dealer finally called me back and informed me that it would take 10 days or more to get a part. Unfortunately, it's been 15 days and I still haven't received any updates. It's so sad considering the price I paid for it - $61K. I'm even considering hiring a lawyer at this point. Thank you for listening to my experience.

The steering felt a bit loose during the test drive.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. I understand that the Jeep Gladiator was involved in a tragic accident that resulted in the loss of your sister's life. It is important to note that there have been reports of a 'Death Wobble' associated with this vehicle. I would advise anyone considering purchasing this vehicle to do their research and take this information into account. Your safety and well-being are of the utmost importance.
