2011 Chevrolet Volt problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid car manufactured by General Motors, also marketed in rebadged variants as the Holden Volt in Australia and New Zealand and the Buick Velite 5 in China, and with a different fascia as the Vauxhall Ampera in the United Kingdom and as the Opel Ampera in the remainder of Europe. Volt production ended in February 2019.

Sales of the 2011 Volt began in the United States in mid-December 2010, followed by various European countries and other international markets in 2011. Global combined Volt/Ampera-family sales totaled about 177,000 units by the end of October 2018. The U.S. is the leading market, with 157,054 Volts delivered through the end of 2019, followed by Canada with 16,653 Volts sold through September 2018. Just over 10,000 Opel/Vauxhall Ampera cars had been sold in Europe as of June 2016. Until December 2018, the Volt/Ampera family of vehicles was the world's all-time bestselling plug-in hybrid vehicle. As of December 2019, the Chevrolet Volt is listed as the all-time top-selling plug-in hybrid in the American market.

The Volt operates as a pure battery electric vehicle until its battery capacity drops to a predetermined threshold from full charge. From there, its internal combustion engine powers an electric generator to extend the vehicle's range as needed. While running on gasoline at high speeds the engine may be mechanically linked (by a clutch) to a generator set, improving efficiency by 10% to 15%. The Volt's regenerative braking also contributes to the on-board electricity generation. Under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2013‍–‍15 model year Volt all-electric range is 38 mi (61 km), with a combined electric mode/gasoline-only rating of 62 mpg‑US (3.8 L/100 km; 74 mpg‑imp) equivalent (MPG equivalent).

The second-generation Volt's improved battery system and drivetrain increased the all-electric range to 53 miles (85 km), its EPA-rated fuel economy in charge-sustaining mode to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp), and the combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode to 106 MPG-e, up from 98 MPG-e. Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. and Canada began in October 2015 as a 2016 model year.

The Volt has won several awards, including the 2009 Green Car Vision Award, 2011 Green Car of the Year, 2011 North American Car of the Year, 2011 World Green Car, 2012 European Car of the Year, and 2016 Green Car of the Year.

Common 2011 Chevrolet Volt problems

The Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid vehicle introduced in 2011, has been praised for its innovative approach to powertrain design. However, like any vehicle, it has had its share of issues over the years. Here are some of the most common problems with the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, based on complaints from owners:

  • Premium Fuel Requirement: Although the Volt's engine is similar to the one in the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco, it requires premium fuel, which can be an added expense for owners. This requirement is not shared by the Cruze Eco, which runs just fine on regular fuel.
  • Dashboard Buzz: Some 2011 Volt owners have reported a distinct buzz from behind the dashboard during certain combinations of engine speed and road speed. This issue can be particularly annoying for owners who have just paid a premium price for a new vehicle.
  • Keyless Entry: The Volt does not have proximity locking and unlocking, which is a standard feature in many cars at this price level. This inconvenience requires drivers to manually unlock the car with the key fob, which can be a hassle, especially in cold weather or when carrying bags.
  • Flimsy Charge-Port and Gas-Filler Doors: The plastic charge-port and gas-filler doors on the 2011 Volt have been criticized for being flimsy and not suitable for a car at this price level. This issue is particularly concerning given the importance of these doors for charging and refueling the vehicle.

In addition to these specific issues with the 2011 model, the Chevrolet Volt has had some recurring problems across various model years. These include electrical issues, loss of power steering, and transmission failure.

It is important to note that while these issues have been reported by some owners, the Volt is still considered a decent car overall. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-20
  • VIN: 1G1RC6E43BU
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: '11 Chevy Volt hybrid was daily driver of 100+ miles, multiple trips both highway and city for last 2 1/2 months. Breaks and rotors have been replaced all the way around, fresh oil changes as needed and filters. Warning on dash "Service High Voltage Charging System", ”Service Airbag" and check engine light have been on since I've owned it (Oct. 23). When plug car in it doesn't charge, but the EV charges while driving. Car generally switches back and forth from EV to ICE without issues. No other issues have been noted. 1/18/24 Start car and drive all day for work. Total of 129 miles between 22 trips. Last trip car sat for 30 minutes after running deliveries all day. Started as normal, turned off at gas station, filled tank with premium, restarted and drive to freeway. Drove 20 miles, pulled over to text, put car in park. 5 mins later took out of park and car wouldn't move. Inside had complete power, radio, windows, ect. Only noticable difference was car would get no acceleration, power steering went out, and heat started blowing cooler air. Absolutely no warning and car just cuts off engines. Thankfully I was parked safe. Towed home, replaced 12v. Started and drove no problem on 1/19/24. No new warnings or anything different. Started up 1/20/24 drove 7 miles and the engines cut off in the middle of a main road while accelerating, once again no warning. Luckily got into turn lane before almost getting hit. Still not sure what's wrong with car. Same codes. No battery warning or loss of power indication at all. Just up and cuts off. This is very very dangerous and needs to be looked into please. When my volt died today the truck behind me had to slam on his brakes and came inches from hitting me. If this would've happen on the freeway, I'd likely been hit.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-17
  • VIN: 1G1RD6E40BU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The car quit running when my wife was driving the car when the mileage range went down to 4 miles range remaining. The car was towed to the local Chevrolet dealership who charged over $1,000 to reset the electronics so car would run. I was advised that if battery range was run down to a low mileage range that car would quit running again and that it would have to be towed back to the dealership for the electronics to be reset. I was concerned about liability if anyone drove car and it stopped on highway. It was clear to me that the only way out of potential liability, associated with the car stopping on the highway was to sell the car for salvage. I purchased this Chevrolet Volt Premier new. It was never in a collision or damaged in any way. The car was sold for with approximately 81,000 miles for $2,013.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-16
  • VIN: 1G1RD6E4XBU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Several times over the 2 years I have owned this vehicle while driving an almost complete loss of braking occurs with a service notice for the ABS system. If you turn off the ignition and restart it the braking works fine. I am in the process of having the Electronic Brake Control Module - GM (84070136) and the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve - GM (23283683) replaced. i believe that there is a design flaw in this system in that a problem of the ABS should not eliminating the ability to stop the vehicle. This is costing me $3500, but the point is that loss of braking is a serious safety issue and should be addressed by the manufacturer. Thank you.

ONLINE SEARCH SUGGESTS THAT OTHER OWNERS HAVE SAME ISSUE, AND THAT DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR CAN BE $500 TO $1000. I HAVE NOT HAD A CHEVROLET DEALER DIAGNOSE THIS ISSUE SINCE IT IS INTERMITTENT. CURRENT MARKET VALUE OF VEHICLE (55K MILES, OTHERWISE EXCELLENT CONDITION, A GREAT CAR TO DRIVE) MAKES COST OF REPAIR DIFFICULT TO JUSTIFY, ESPECIALLY IF IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING.

2011 Chevrolet Volt recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

2015-03-13
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Volt vehicles manufactured August 25, 2010, to June 26, 2013. If the driver exits the vehicle without turning off the electrical system, the battery may drain low enough that the gasoline engine will automatically start itself to recharge the electric battery.
  • Consequence: If the engine runs for an extended period of time in an enclosed space, there may be a build up of carbon monoxide, increasing the risk of personal injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the engine management software to limit the time that the stationary vehicle can be left in the ON position, free of charge. The recall began April 15, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14617.

Negative 2011 Chevrolet Volt car reviews

  1. Keagan Stamm 2024-07-26

I bought the Chevy Volt for one reason only. As a business person who drives around 300 miles almost every day, I needed a car that could handle both city and highway driving while still being fuel efficient. With an average of 104mpg, I'm glad I chose the Volt over the Prius.

  2. Jeramy Lubowitz 2024-06-14

I wanted to help usher in a new era of EV, save on gas and leave a smaller carbon footprint. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with my car that have been quite costly. For example, my 120V charger stopped working after only two years and the dealership explained that it would not be covered under the voltec warranty. I was able to fix the charger, but it still wouldn't work, so I took it to a different dealership who replaced it with a gen2 charger. Recently, I had an issue with the engine throwing a rod while driving on the interstate, despite changing the oil regularly. It was a very expensive repair and now the battery life is shot and won't even charge. It's been a difficult situation to deal with and I want to warn potential buyers to be aware of these issues. All of this happened in under 100,000 miles...

  3. Ford Schowalter 2024-05-26

It's such a wonderful feeling to be able to drive using NO gasoline for more than 95% of my driving. I don't have to worry about how far I might have to drive or whether I'll get stuck in traffic, which allowed me to consider this as my only car. It's such a great stress reliever to have reduced worries when the price of gas goes up or gets rationed. It just feels good to know that I'm doing the best I can to support the US economy while also addressing environmental concerns. I never thought I'd have to compromise more to be able to drive this type of vehicle.

Positive 2011 Chevrolet Volt car reviews

  1. Shane Blick 2024-10-24

I've only had my Volt #2499 for a week, and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed! Everything about it, from the car itself to the concept behind it, is truly game-changing. Since getting the Volt, my other car, a CTS-V, has been parked. The only issue now is that my wife wants to trade her SUV for one too! While saving gas money isn't my main objective, using cutting-edge technology and proving its everyday use is definitely the fun part. This vehicle is a true tribute to the team that put it together and brought it to market. Let's hope the 'Halo effect' spills over and helps all of GM.

  2. Major Kautzer 2024-09-21

This car is a blast to drive, especially in sport mode. I had my first oil change at 35K miles and it was free. So far, I haven't had to pay for any repairs (except for a couple of minor recalls) and it's been over 2 years! I'm not sure why the cost to own it is listed as Maintenance first year $166 second year $317, because I haven't spent a penny on maintenance. The same goes for repairs, which are listed as first year $80 second year $191, but I haven't spent anything on repairs either. I haven't spent a dime in over 3 years! In October 2016, it was already 3 years and 68K miles without any issues at all. I'm very, very satisfied with this car. In April 2017, I had my second oil change at 75k miles and it was also free, so no spending there either. The only downside is that the middle armrest is a bit hard and should be a bit further forward. Additionally, the radio doesn't remember the last input selected, so sometimes it defaults to FM radio instead of Bluetooth. I'm not sure how Edmunds came up with their numbers, but they don't reflect my experience at all.

  3. Jovani Ratke 2024-09-07

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Volt! It's great to hear that the vehicle has exceeded your expectations and that you find it comfortable to ride in. It's no surprise that you've decided to order a second one - it sounds like a fantastic car!

  4. Ubaldo Lind 2024-09-03

Congratulations on your new Volt! It's great to hear that you've been able to drive 3100 miles and only used 20 gallons of gas. It's impressive that you've been able to do most of your daily driving in all electric mode. Even on your longer trips, you were still able to get 41 mpg in charge-sustaining mode. It's interesting to hear that you also own a Prius and feel that the Volt is a big leap forward. The Volt is quicker, handles better, is quieter, and has much lower operating cost/mile (you only pay $0.10 per kWh). It's great to hear that you've had no issues with the car. Overall, it sounds like the Volt is an astonishing achievement!

  5. Tyree Hoppe 2024-08-24

I truly mean it when I say that the Volt (VIN 541) is the best car I have ever driven. It is stylish, nimble, and simply incomparable from a technological standpoint. Electric driving is an amazing experience, especially from a dead stop. Even zipping around traffic on the highway is a breeze. The Volt's range extender makes it a practical primary vehicle, eliminating any range anxiety. Most days, the car never burns a drop of gasoline, as my commute is around 20 miles. However, this past weekend, I drove two hours each way (about 250 miles) without even stopping for gas! Everyone who has ridden in my Volt has loved it, including myself!
