Common Saturn Ion 2006 problems

The Saturn Ion, produced in 2006, is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues span across various categories, including power steering, ignition module failure, and gas cap problems.

One of the most reported problems is power steering failure. This issue can be caused by a leak in the power steering system or a malfunctioning pump, making it difficult for the driver to turn the steering wheel. This problem has been reported to occur at an average mileage of 71,000 miles and has an average repair cost of $300.

Another common issue is check engine light and misfire due to ignition module/coil failure. This problem can be caused by a faulty ignition module or coil, leading to a misfire in the engine and causing the check engine light to illuminate. This problem has been reported to occur at an average mileage of 56,000 miles and has an average repair cost of $300.

Additionally, a common problem is check engine light due to gas cap issue. This issue can be caused by a faulty or missing gas cap, leading to an evaporative emission control system leak. This problem has been reported to occur at an average mileage of 121,000 miles and has an average repair cost of $4,100.

Lastly, steering complaints have been reported by 543 drivers, with many reporting loss of power steering, despite a 2014 recall intended to address the issue.

These common problems with the Saturn Ion can lead to inconvenience and additional expenses for the owners. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate these issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

Saturn Ion 2006 engine

How long will a 2006 Saturn Ion last?

Drivers typically report a minimum mileage of 200,000 before the Saturn Ion's problems become too expensive to bother fixing. The transmission and engine will go a very long time with regular maintenance, but electrical issues may add up until they're not worth the expense at a certain point.

Are Saturn Ions reliable cars?

Saturn Ion drivers regularly report the car surpassing 200,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. With excellent care there's no reason an Ion can't shoot right past a quarter million miles, but you'll have to be on the lookout for excessive wear and tear from previous owners.

What is the maximum mileage for a 2006 Saturn Ion?

There is no maximum mileage. Most cars are manufactured to run to 100,000 miles without major maintenance. You should go to the local Saturn dealer and ask for the maintenance schedule.

How fast is a 2006 Saturn Ion?

How fast is the 2006 Saturn Ion? All 2006 Ion trim variations have 140 horsepower , with a 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-01
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1G8AJ55F86Z
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The year, make, and model of my car has a factory recall for the fuel pump failing. I went to the dealership and they informed me my Vin # wasn't included and their was nothing they could do about it. My vehicle started leaking fuel last week so I dropped the tank and removed the fuel pump. I have done my homework on this including watching several videos on YouTube concerning this issue and I'm 100% positive this fuel pump has failed in the exact location that all the other recalls have and yet my Vin number isn't on the recall according to this GMC service department manager. I am going to have to put a fuel pump in at my expense today because it's my transportation for work but I'm very upset about this situation and GMCs failure to have my vehicle included and having to replace their defected fuel pump. It's very frustrating knowing I'm putting my time and money towards it because I have my hands full trying to replace the house that Hurricane Ida destroyed about a month ago. We need help with this situation because our money is very tight and don't really have it to fix GMCs mistake. I will keep the fuel pump that came out of it along with the receipt for it so anyone can clearly see that I'm not only correct but being shafted on the recall. Thanks have a nice day I'll be eagerly awaiting your response

Saturn Ion 2006 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the Saturn Ion 2006.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-03-31
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Negative Saturn Ion 2006 car reviews

Although it has had its challenges, I have found that when my car is working properly, it's a smooth ride. Unfortunately, it seems to only work about 10% of the time and has required multiple trips to the shop for various reasons. While the car is aging, the miles are still relatively low for its age. Although some issues have been resolved through recalls, new ones seem to arise unexpectedly. For example, I once experienced a gas leak while driving, which required a tow to the mechanic. It turned out that the seal had worn, causing the leak. While it has had its setbacks, I remain hopeful that my car will improve with proper care and maintenance.

Hi there! We bought this car used a couple of months ago with around 30,000 miles on it. So far, it's been a pretty decent car. We've only had a few minor issues, like the locks not wanting to turn when it's cold outside.

The transmission is experiencing some issues, despite having been inspected by a transmission shop. After some time, I took it to a different transmission shop and was informed that it may be skipping from first to third gear. When starting the car, it remains in first gear and requires a pause to shift into second gear. I sought advice from a Saturn dealer, who suggested that the transmission may be failing and quoted a repair cost of $3,000.00. However, they also advised me to continue driving the car until the transmission fails completely, rather than spending such a large sum of money. Currently, when the car is put into gear, the interior and exterior lights flicker, despite the fuses being in good condition. It is a frustrating situation.

We have had some issues with our ION, unfortunately. The drivers seat has required multiple repairs and is now due to be replaced again. Despite being loyal Saturn customers, this experience has left us feeling disappointed and frustrated. We were assured that the issues we had with our previous ION had been resolved, but unfortunately this has not been the case. As a result, we have decided not to purchase any more GM products. We hope that others will take our experience into consideration before making a similar decision. During the first week of ownership, the driver's front window motor stopped working, which was frustrating given that the car was already on its way back to the dealership for front end problems. We did try to opt out of the car, but unfortunately GM was unable to accommodate our request.

I wish I had shopped around before buying this car. Our experience with this car has been horrible, yet all these great reviews sound awfully fishy to me. Let me give you a little history. The car was in the shop with a transmission problem at a little over 400 miles, and now we are experiencing a brake problem. Oh, and did I mention the interior? I thought it would grow on me, but cheap is cheap and uncomfortable. Even my kids hate it and complain that it is difficult to sit in the back seats for more than 30 minutes. Oh well, live and learn. I should have listened to my husband. He wanted a Honda.

This car is fantastic! I haven't even pushed it to its limits yet, but it's already got my heart racing, especially when I downshift. The ride is incredibly smooth, and those seats really keep you in place.

I recently traded my 2005 ION 2 sedan manual for a Quad Coupe 3 manual with a 2.4 engine. This Saturn is a blast to drive with its revised engine (same as Cobalt), leather interior, XM radio/CD, and sunroof. The revisions to the struts and sway bars make for a nice, firm, and controlled ride, especially when compared to the ION 2. The leather is better than I expected, about as good as my old 2001.5 Passat GLX. The fit and finish are quite good, and it was delivered with no problems. The low-end torque is very impressive when compared to the 2.2L engine. If you can find one, I highly recommend getting it, especially since I got a great deal well below sticker price plus $1,250 in rebates.

I believe that the performance of a car is largely dependent on its class, such as 4cyl or economy. This is my second Saturn and I would describe it as a B+ car with A+ service and price. While I am impressed with Hondas and Toyotas, I find it difficult to even walk into their dealerships. I understand that in the 'Global Economy' this may not matter, but I have personally known a fair amount of people who have had problems with Toyotas and Hondas, despite their reputation for reliability. While Japanese cars may be better in general, I may just be lucky with my Saturn. Overall, I believe that American cars are not perfect, but they are a good option to consider.

Your 2006 ION sounds like a great car! It's impressive that it has been better than any other GM car you've owned. I can understand why you loved your 1997 Saturn SL2 so much, it's always hard to say goodbye to a car that has served us well. It's great to hear that your ION has been running smoothly for the past 20K+ miles without any issues. The plastic bodies are definitely a plus, and it's amazing that your 11-year-old 1997 SL2 looked like new the day you traded it in. I hope your 'last of the plastics' ION continues to hold up just as well!

I'm so glad to hear that your vehicle has been so reliable! It's amazing that it's still going strong even after all those miles. It's great to know that it doesn't require much maintenance and has never let you down. It sounds like a fantastic choice for anyone in need of a reliable and affordable vehicle. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!
