The Infiniti Q45 is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured by Nissan for its Infiniti brand, spanning model years 1989-2006 and three design generations.

The first generation Q45 (1989–1999) was based on the Nissan President; the second generation (1997–2000) and third generation (2002–2006) were based on Nissan's JDM Nissan Cima. Marketing of the Q45 ended after MY 2006.

First generation (G50; 1989–1996)

The first generation Q45 came to market in 1989 as a 1990 model with a high-output 4.5 L VH45DE DOHC 32V V8 engine rated at 278 hp (207 kW) and 292 lb⋅ft (396 N⋅m) in North American trim. All Q45s included a viscous limited-slip differential and a multi-link suspension at the front and rear. At launch, the US$38,000 (equivalent to $93,000 in 2023) sedan had a single option, the Touring Package, which added Nissan's Super HICAS four-wheel steering system, a decklid spoiler, and alloy wheels.

In Japan, it was marketed as the Nissan Infiniti Q45, and was exclusive to Nissan Prince Store locations, as its platform twin the President was exclusive to Nissan Store locations. The G50 chassis continued in production in Japan until 2002 as the President in both regular and extended wheelbase versions. The Japanese version had many options that never appeared on the North American G50.

The contemporary upstart luxury marque Lexus (Toyota) had managed to challenge the establish dominance of European full-size luxury cars with the LS 400, so the Q45 seemed poised for similar success with comparable specifications and price to the LS 400 while featuring more emphasis upon handling. However, the Q45 did not achieve similar sales volumes, which was attributed to the car's unconventional styling, particularly the grille and lack of interior woodgrain or chrome trim. There was also an unusual advertising campaign which did not include actual photos or information about the car. By 1995, the price had risen to US$54,000 (equivalent to $108,000 in 2023), slowing sales.

In 1993 the Infiniti brand was launched in Australia with the sole model on offer being the Q45. With a price of A$140,000, the Q45 sold poorly and the brand was subsequently withdrawn from the market in 1996.

  • Summary: I HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY CAR, WITH THE TIRES CONSTANTLY LEAKING. I HAD TO FILL THEM WITH AIR ALL THE TIME, HAD THEM CHECKED A NUMBER OF TIMES, AND HAD TO HAVE THE RIMS CLEANED AND REGROUND, ETC., TRYING TO DETERMINE AND SOLVE THE PROBLEM. AFTER INCREDIBLE AGGRAVATION, WE FINALLY TRACKED THE PROBLEM DOWN TO CRACKS IN THE VALVE STEMS. THE VALVE STEMS CONTAINED THE AIR PRESSURE SENSORS AND WERE EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE, PARTS WERE AS MUCH AS $135 OR SO EACH, PLUS LABOR, WHICH COULD BE $200 OR MORE, AND THEN ALL THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS HAD TO BE RE-SET - I THINK THE TERM WAS RECALIBRATED OR SOMETHING, WHICH MOST PLACES DIDN'T HAVE EQUIPMENT TO DO OR COULDN'T DO CORRECTLY, AND I ALWAYS ENDED UP HAVING TO GO TO A DEALERSHIP. AT LEAST THEY SOMETIMES DIDN'T CHARGE AS MUCH AS THEY COULD, AS I WAS A CAPTIVE; IF THEY DIDN'T DO IT, NONE OF THE SENSORS WOULD WORK. I DISCOVERED THAT THESE VALVE STEM SENSORS WERE SUBJECT TO CRACKING, AND HAD JUST BEEN PUT ON THE CAR FOR THAT MODEL YEAR. MIDWAY THROUGH THE MODEL YEAR, THEY WERE REPLACED WITH ANOTHER TYPE MADE OUT OF BETTER MATERIAL. BEFORE MY MODEL YEAR, THE TYPE USED WAS IN SERVICE I THINK FOR SEVERAL YEARS. IT TOOK TWO TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP, A TOTAL OF FIVE DAYS, AND A LOT OF TIME WITH THE MECHANIC EITHER ONLINE OR ON THE TELEPHONE WITH AN INFINIT "HOT LINE" ELECTICAL SPECIALIST TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM: ONE DEFECTIVE TIRE PRESSURE SENSING GAUGE. TROUBLE IS, THE SAME THING HAD HAPPENED APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR AGO, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS ONLY ABOUT TWO MONTHS OLD. AT THAT TIME, THE DEALERSHIP WAS ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AND SIMPLY REPLACED A TIRE PRESSURE GAUGE. PROBLEM SOLVED. WHY, WITH THIS CAR'S PREVIOUS HISTORY, DID IT TAKE FIVE DAYS AND SEVERAL MINDS WORKING TOGETHER TO DETERMINE THAT MY CAR WAS SUFFERING FROM THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS A YEAR EARLIER?

ON MY LATEST VISIT, DURING THE 22500-MILE SERVICE, THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT ALL FOUR OF MY FACTORY WHEELS WERE BENT. THE TECHNICIAN AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THEY SEE THIS REGULARLY AND THAT IT IS CAUSED BY IMPERFECTIONS IN THE ROAD SURFACEPOTHOLES, BRICK ROADS, UNEVEN PAVEMENT, ETC. I EXPLAINED THAT I HAVE NOT HIT ANY POTHOLES OR UNEVEN PAVEMENT AND THE BRICK ROADS THAT I HAVE DRIVEN ON ARE IN GOOD CONDITION, BUT THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO REPAIR OR REPLACE MY WHEELS. BEING THAT THE DEALERSHIPS TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MY CAR, I BELIEVE THAT THE FACTORY INFINITI 18 WHEELS ARE MADE OF AN ALUMINUM ALLOY, WHICH IS TOO SOFT AND BENDS TOO EASILY UNDER NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS.     I had a couple of unfortunate incidents where my car broke down and needed to be towed to the dealership. Unfortunately, I also received recall notices after the affected parts had already malfunctioned. The dealership's diagnostic capabilities were only fair, and it took multiple visits to fix a simple issue with the overhead map light. The clock was difficult to read, but I was able to fix it myself. The transmission could be a bit smoother, and the trunk is smaller than expected. On the bright side, the stereo is excellent, the driver's seat is comfortable, and the car handles well. The paint job is a bit fragile, but overall, it's a decent car.

    I did a lot of research and test drove many cars. The Q45 seemed to offer the luxury and performance I was looking for. Unfortunately, I had to take it in for repairs twice within the first month. The brakes made noise, the subwoofer blew, and a strut broke.

    I started watching Q45's in late 2001 and fell in love with them. In December 2001, I had the chance to drive one and it was amazing. I knew I had to find an affordable one for myself. Luckily, I was able to buy my 2002 Premium on eBay for a great price and I absolutely love it!

    When I received the car, there were several recalls and service upgrades that the dealer had not addressed. Unfortunately, the dealer refused to warrant the defective wheel (out of round). Additionally, the rear sunshade broke at 33,000 miles and the electronics malfunction occasionally, requiring a reset. I find it easier to use manual controls rather than voice commands, as I can't always remember the exact wording and it can be disruptive to everyone in the car. According to car magazine tests, the car can go from 0 to 60 in about 6.5 seconds, which is still quite fast, although not as fast as the advertised 5.9 seconds. It would be helpful to have a switch to turn off the traction control. My previous car was a Lexus LS400, which I found to be superior in terms of quality, dealer service, and workmanship. Unfortunately, this car does not seem to be holding its value very well.

    This is a fantastic car for the price! It's comfortable, fast, and responsive. The brakes are good and it handles very well in heavy rain and water at the side of the road. I love the adjustable headlamps and the smart cruise control is brilliant. The sound system is excellent, and having the CD in the cab is a great feature.

    Infiniti really pulled it off this time! The last Q kind of left me cold with its boring 'anycar' styling, perfect for the old Caddy set. But this is another beast altogether. First of all, it's fast! The ride and balance of the car rivals anything BMW has to offer (and I should know, I just sold my 740). And there's nothing in the Lexus stable that can even come close to the zest this car offers to the driver. It's understated yet elegant, and did I mention that it's fast? The car is deceptive - I was horsing around one time around a curve where I-295 dumps into I-95 and realized I was doing 135 when it felt more like 75. So be careful with this car, and did I mention that it's fast?
