1995 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Common 1995 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The 1995 Chevrolet Lumina has been known for several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the intake manifold gaskets, which may leak coolant or engine oil. This problem can lead to significant engine damage if not addressed promptly.
Another common issue with the 1995 Chevrolet Lumina is the underpowered and rough-running four- and six-cylinder engines. These engines were not as efficient or powerful as their counterparts from competitors like Honda and Toyota, which negatively affected the car's performance and overall driving experience.
The 1995 Lumina also suffered from outdated styling, with long stretches of body extending beyond its wheels and an unflattering mix of curves and straight lines that robbed the look of any harmony. This design aspect made the car appear less modern and less attractive compared to its rivals.
Additionally, the 1995 Lumina's fuel pump has been known to fail, causing the engine to stall. This issue can be particularly problematic, as it can lead to safety concerns and the need for costly repairs.
Engine issues are a significant concern for the 1995 Lumina, with 62 complaints recorded. Electrical problems are also common, with 19 complaints, as well as cooling system issues, with 17 complaints.
In terms of long-term reliability, the 1995 Chevrolet Lumina ranks 10th out of 40 Chevrolet models, with 160 complaints made over 15 model years, mostly about engine issues. This ranking suggests that the Lumina may not be the most reliable choice for a car in the long term.
In summary, the 1995 Chevrolet Lumina has several common problems that owners have reported, including issues with the intake manifold gaskets, underpowered and rough-running engines, outdated styling, fuel pump failure, and engine, electrical, and cooling system issues. These problems suggest that the Lumina may not be the most reliable or efficient car, and potential buyers should be aware of these issues before making a purchase.
Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?
With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.
How long can a Chevy Lumina last?
Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.
How many miles per gallon does a 1995 Chevy Lumina get?
1995 Chevrolet Lumina MPG
Based on data from 16 vehicles, 536 fuel-ups and 135,299 miles of driving, the 1995 Chevrolet Lumina gets a combined Avg MPG of 21.29 with a 0.54 MPG margin of error.

- Summary: ON OR ABOUT 10-6-10 I ASSISTED MY GRANDSON IN PURCHASING A VEHICLE FROM A CAR LOT IN CLEVELAND OHIO. THE CAR WAS A 1995 CHEVY LUMINA. WE WERE TOLD THE CAR HAD BEEN PURCHASED AT AN AUCTION IN PA. AND DRIVEN TO CLEVELAND WITHOUT A PROBLEM. WE LEFT WITH AN ELATED YOUNG MAN WHO NOW HAD A WAY TO GET BACK AND FORTH TO WORK FOR HIS TWO JOBS. THE NEXT DAY HE TAKES IT FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND IS TOLD THAT THE CAR HAS NUMEROUS PROBLEMS, LEAKING GASKETS, BAD STRUTS, RUSTED FLOOR, AND LEAK IN GAS TANK AND TRANSMISSION. THE NEXT DAY, IT STOPPED RUNNING. CONTACTED THE DEALER WHO TOWED IT AND CLAIMED TO REPAIR LEAKING TRANS. THREE DAYS LATER IT STOPS AGAIN, THEY TOW IT FROM I-480 HIGHWAY AND EACH TOW WE HAVE TO PAY THEM $45. THEY ARE GIVEN A LIST OF REPAIRS NEEDED, EVEN THOUGH PURCHASED WITH NO WARRANTY THE CAR BARELY LEAVES THE LOT BEFORE IT BREAKS DOWN. ON PAYDAY, HE GETS CAR BACK THIS TIME AND FILLS TANK UP ONLY FOR HIS JOB PARKING LOT TO BE COVERED WITH LEAKING GAS AND THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPT. ARE CALLED AND TELL HIM NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR AS THE LEAK IS A DEATH TRAP. AGAIN I PAY FOR A TOW FROM AAA $64. THEY ARE INFORMED AND STATE THEY PUT A GAS TANK ON AND THAT WE CANNOT CONTACT THEM REGARDING ANYMORE PROBLEMS. TWO DAYS AGO THE CAR STOPS AGAIN, BATTERY DEAD. I PURCHASE A NEW BATTERY AND TODAY, THE STABILIZER BAR FALLS AND THE STRUTS ARE HANGING LEAVING THE CAR UNDRIVEABLE. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE REGARDING UNSCRUPULOUS DEALERS THAT SELL THESE HARD WORKING PEOPLE UNRELIABLE TRANSPORTATION. *TR

CLEARANCE IS VERY TIGHT WHERE THE HOSE RUNS. I THINK GM SHOULD GO TO A HARD HOSE INSTEAD OF A PERFORMED RUBBER HOSE. THE ENGINE WAS NOT LEAKING OIL. THIS FAILURE WAS HEAT AN NORMAL WEAR. BEING THESE CARS ARE 10 YEARS OLD THEY ARE STARTING TO FAIL. I SUSPECT EVERY VEHICLE WITH THE 3.4 L ENGINE WILL HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM NOT JUST THE LUMINA. *JB

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I absolutely adore my Chevy. Even after driving it for 112K miles, it still manages to get an impressive 26 miles to the gallon in the city. Plus, I haven't had any major issues with it. The pick-up is fantastic and the ride is super comfortable.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've had this car for five years now and it's been great. It's an older car, so I've had to get some repairs done, but nothing too serious. When I bought it, it had a little over 100000 miles, but now it's almost at 160K and still running strong!
-
I'm glad to hear that you've never had a problem!
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I actually acquired it from the original buyer 4 years ago when it had 82,000 miles on it. I have to say, it's been a great car for me! It's really roomy and comfortable, especially considering the price. I have put a lot of miles on it, including some cross country trips, and it has been totally reliable. The only thing to keep in mind is that the brakes tend to wear out around 40,000 miles. Recently, at 130,000 miles, I did need to do a major tuneup, replace the spark plugs, and replace the intake manifold gasket, but overall it's been a great car for me.
-
This car has taken me to so many wonderful places in such comfort. It's getting close to the time to replace it, but let's see how long she lasts.

Considering the price (under 16G) when new, this one was a sleeper. It has a surprisingly tight and smooth ride, although that has deteriorated somewhat as the tires have worn. There have been some repairs, including a transmission pan leak, so it's worthwhile to keep current with various filter replacements. The engine is a willing worker, but not very refined. Contrary to Consumer Reports' review, the handling with Goodrich tires is sharp and precise for a car its size.
Willard Becker 2024-09-10
I purchased the car with 75000 miles on it. Unfortunately, at 82000 miles, the transmission failed and at 90000 miles, the head gasket went out. The block being iron and the heads being aluminum caused the heads to warp. I felt sorry for those who had the 3.4L engine as the head gasket kits were NATIONALLY BACK ORDERED. It must have been a tough winter for that not-so-good engine. Now, at 93000 miles, I have noticed transmission fluid leaking. It is frustrating that I still owe more than the car is worth and that I have spent over $1300 on repairs in the two years I have owned it. If you are considering purchasing a car, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a story about a car my wife and I bought from a 'lemon lot' in the NW. We got it for a little over 2k when it had around 130,000 miles on it. Surprisingly, the only thing we had to replace was the ECM, and that was a year after we bought it. The car has never left me stranded and always starts (unless she forgets to turn off the dome light). I eventually sold it to my sister at 189,000 miles, but ended up buying it back at 192,000. However, the OEM struts were totally shot and the car felt like it was going to leave the road. After replacing them, it now rides like a lumber truck. Overall, it was a great car and I have many fond memories with it.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that these cars may have some issues with their engines. Specifically, they may experience coolant leaks. Just thought you should be aware!

The 3.4 spun a rod bearing at 50,000. Ever since, there has been a 'tack' noise in the upper end of the motor. However, overall it has been a great car to own and drive.
