Jaguar Xj6 problems

The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common Jaguar Xj6 problems

The Jaguar XJ6 is a luxury vehicle that has been praised for its sleek design and powerful performance. However, like any car, it is not without its common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Jaguar XJ6, based on complaints from owners:

  1. Air Conditioning System Blockages: The XJ6 models are known to suffer from blockages in the air conditioning system, which can result in leakages onto the car's floor. This problem is often caused by a buildup of debris and dirt in the system, which can restrict the flow of refrigerant and cause the system to malfunction.
  2. Acceleration Problems: The X-type Jaguar is prone to problems with acceleration, which can be caused by issues with the car's transmission or engine. This can result in clumsy gear changes and a loss of power, which can be frustrating for drivers.
  3. Suspension Issues: Both the Jaguar X-type and XF models have been known to suffer from suspension problems, particularly in the rear suspension. This can result in a knocking noise when driving over rough surfaces or speed bumps, which can be a sign of wear and tear in the suspension components.
  4. Cooling Fan Module Failure: The cooling fan module on X-type cars, particularly those built before 2003, is prone to failure. This can result in the cooling fan stopping without warning, which can cause the engine to overheat and potentially cause serious damage.
  5. Fuel Gauge Problems: The fuel gauge on X-type cars has been known to malfunction, often reading as 3/4 full even when the tank is completely full. This can be caused by a faulty fuel sender unit, which can result in inaccurate readings and potentially cause drivers to run out of fuel unexpectedly.
  6. Lambda Sensor Problems: The lambda sensor in S-type Jaguars can fail, which can result in the engine management warning light not appearing on the dashboard. This can be caused by a buildup of debris in the sensor, which can prevent it from functioning properly.
  7. Water Leaks: The S-type series has been known to have problems with water leaking into the boot and front footwell, which can be caused by a faulty outer door seal or other issues with the car's bodywork.
  8. Faulty Wheels: XF models have been known to have problems with faulty wheels, which can crack and become deformed over time. This can result in the need for expensive replacement wheels, which can be a significant inconvenience for drivers.
  9. Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Warning Light: The DPF warning light can come on in XJ models if the car is only used for short journeys, which can cause harmful particles to build up in the exhaust system. This can result in a loss of power and potentially cause serious damage to the engine.
  10. Power Steering Fault: The power steering can fail in XJ models, which can result in the need for an electrical short circuit repair.
  11. Loss of Brake Power: The brakes can fail in XJ models, which can result in the need for replacement brake pipes if the car was built between February and July 2014.
  12. Poor Engine Performance: The engine can misfire and lose power in XJ models, which can be caused by faulty ignition coils or other issues with the engine.
  13. Overheating: The engine can overheat in XJ models, which can be caused by a faulty coolant reservoir or other issues with the car's cooling system.
  14. Faulty Roof: The roof can fail to open or close properly in convertible XJ models, which can be caused by sub-par hydraulic fluid or other issues with the car's roof mechanism.
  15. Burning Smell: A burning smell can occur in XJ models, which can be caused by a leaking engine oil pan gasket or other issues with the car's engine.
  16. Windows Stop Moving: One or more of the electric windows can stop working in XJ models, which can be caused by faulty window regulators or other issues with the car's window mechanism.

These are just some of the most common problems reported by Jaguar XJ6 owners. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is important to have your car inspected by a qualified mechanic to ensure that any problems are identified and addressed promptly. Regular maintenance and servicing can also help to prevent many of these issues from occurring in the first place.

The XJ6, using the 2.8-litre (2,792 cc (170.4 cu in)) and 4.2-litre (4,235 cc (258.4 cu in)) straight-six cylinder versions of Jaguar's renowned XK engine, replaced most of Jaguar's saloons – which, in the 1960s, had expanded to four separate ranges.

When did Jaguar stop making the XJ6?

The 6-cylinder XJ6 Series 3 remained in production until 1987, the V12 Jaguar until 1991 and the Daimler Double Six until 1992, after which nearly three quarters of a million XJs had been produced.

What is the fuel economy of a Jaguar XJ6?

The Jaguar XJ6 currently offers fuel consumption from 12.8 to 12.8L/100km.
