The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 1992 Jaguar Xj6 problems

The 1992 Jaguar XJ6 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is difficulty starting the car in cold weather. This problem may be caused by water getting inside the car, which can lead to the need for an expensive ignition control module replacement.

Another common issue with the 1992 Jaguar XJ6 is transmission slipping and leaking. This can be a serious problem that can lead to further damage to the car if not addressed promptly.

The 1992 Jaguar XJ6's air conditioning (A/C) system is another area where problems have been reported. Some owners have reported difficulty servicing the A/C, and have sought advice on how to do so properly.

The front end of the 1992 Jaguar XJ6 has also been reported to have difficulty holding an alignment, and the rear tires have been reported to tilt inward slightly. This can be a safety issue and should be addressed promptly to ensure the car remains safe to drive.

The leather on the glove box and driver's side seat of the 1992 Jaguar XJ6 has been reported to have damage due to wear and tear over the years. This can be a cosmetic issue, but can also affect the comfort and functionality of the car.

The laminate cover of the ashtray has also been reported to have damage in some 1992 Jaguar XJ6s. This can be a minor issue, but can affect the overall appearance of the car.

The 1992 Jaguar XJ6's VIN number may not be helpful in obtaining the code needed to operate the radio without the owner's manual. Instead, the serial number off the back of the radio deck is required to obtain the code from a Jaguar dealer service center.

Overall, the 1992 Jaguar XJ6 has several common problems that can affect its performance, safety, and appearance. Owners of this car should be aware of these issues and take steps to address them promptly to ensure the car remains safe and reliable.

What problems did the Jaguar XJ have?

Water pumps on 5.0 V8 and 3.0 Supercharged XJ models are prone to failure, sometimes they can fail in less than 20,000 miles. This is because coolant gets inside the bearing housing corroding the water pump bearing.

What engine is in Jaguar XJ6?

The XJ6, using the 2.8-litre (2,792 cc (170.4 cu in)) and 4.2-litre (4,235 cc (258.4 cu in)) straight-six cylinder versions of Jaguar's renowned XK engine, replaced most of Jaguar's saloons – which, in the 1960s, had expanded to four separate ranges.

How fast is a Jaguar XJ6?

140 mph

When the 5.3-liter V-12 arrived in 1972, it provided 253 hp for 140 mph and 0–60 in 7.4 seconds, making the XJ the fastest four-seat sedan in the world. In 1973, Jaguar updated the XJ6 as the Series 2, with a slimmer grille and revised dash.

What are the performance figures of a Jaguar XJ6?

Powertrain specs

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-08-13
  • VIN: SAJHY1749NC
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: HEAD PREVIOUSLY (8/13/01) REPORTED TO YOU THE REFUSAL OF THE DEALER/MFG. TO REPLACE AN INOPERATIVE SEAT BELT BUCKLE THAT IS PART OF THE PASSIVE MOTORIZED SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY . REQUESTED $330 TO REPAIR/REPLACE. BY COINCIDENCE, THE BUCKLE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE ASSEMBLY FAILED IN EXACTLY THE SAME WAY ONLY HOURS AFTER INITIAL REPORT FILED. WHILE BOTH BUCKLES CAN BE CONNECTED, THEY CANNOT EASILYT BE REMOVED, AND REPRESENT A DANGEROUS SAFETY HAZARD IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. EXITING THE VEHICLE WOULD BE MORE DIFFICULT. BELIEVE THAT REPAIR/REPLACEMENT OF BUCKLES COULD BE COVERED AS PART OF LIFETIME WARRANTY OF VEHICLE RESTRAINT SYSTEM. REFUSAL TO COVER AS WARRANTY ITEM IS AGAINST SPIRIT AND INTENT OF VEHICLE SAFETY REGULATIONS.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-07-01
  • VIN: SAJHY1749NC
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL DEALER TO REPAIR THE PASSENGER-SIDE PASSIVE MOTORIZED SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY. DEALER REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT REFUSED TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE SEAT BELT BUCKLE THAT CONNECTS TO THE ASSEMBLY. REQUESTED $330 FOR REPAIR. SINCE SYSTEM IS NOT FULLY OPERATIVE WITH DEFECTIVE BUCKLE, BELIEVE THIS IS AN ATTEMPT TO CIRCUMVENT THE VEHICLE SAFETY REGULATIONS. IT VIOLATES THE SPIRIT, IF NOT THE LETTER, OF THE SAFETY REGULATIONS. AM CONCERNED THAT INOPERATIVE BUCKLE COULD BE A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD IN EVENT OF CRASH, AS IT WOULD MAKE EXIT FROM VEHICLE DIFFICULT. MFG. SHOULD REPLACE FAULTY BUCKLE AS PART OF LIFETIME WARRANTY ON RESTRAINT SYSTEM.

  • VIN: SAJHY1749NC

HOWEVER, DEALER REFUSED TO REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY THE BROKEN SEAT BELT BUCKLE THAT ATTACHED TO MOTORIZED ASSEMBLY. REQUESTED $330 FOR REPAIR/REPLACEMENT. BELIEVE THIS IS ATTEMPT BY MFG TO CIRCUMVENT SPIRIT OF NOT THE LETTER OF RESTRAINT SYSTEM REGS, AS SEAT BELT SYSTEM IS ONLY AS RELIABLE AS WEAKEST COMPONENT, IN THIS CASE A NON-FUNCTIONING BUCKLE. LIKE THE MOTORIZED BELTS, THE BUCKLE SHOULD BE A LIFETIME WARRANTY ITEM IF THE REGS ARE TO HAVE MEANING. *AK *JB ******DIMS 11 IVOQ ENTRY POSTED AFTER 12/12/02 CUT-OVER TO ARTEMIS*****770288.

  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS THE OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE CANNOT USETHE SAFETY BELTS, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A SUDDEN STOPOR ACCIDENT.
  • Remedy: JAGUAR WILL REPAIR THE PASSIVE BELT SYSTEM IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS OR HAS OCCURRED. JAGUAR WILL NOTIFY OWNERS OF THE EXISTENCE OF A LIFETIME WARRANTY ON COMPONENTS OF THE AUTOMATIC (PASSIVE) BELT SYSTEM.
