The BMW E38 is the third generation of the BMW 7 Series luxury cars and was produced from 1994 until 2001. The E38 replaced the E32 7 Series and was produced with petrol and turbo-diesel straight-six and V8 engines, along with a petrol V12 flagship model. Three wheelbase lengths were available — short (i), long (iL) and Limousine (L7).

The E38 was the first car available with curtain airbags. It was also the first European car to offer satellite navigation and the first BMW to offer an in-built television. The E38 was the first 7 Series to be available with a diesel engine and the last to be available with a manual transmission.

In 2001, the E38 was replaced by the E65 7 Series.

Common 2000 Bmw E38 problems

The BMW E38 2000, like any other car, has its share of common problems that owners have reported. This article will delve into these issues, providing details on each problem and how to address them.

  • Power Steering Filter: Replacing the filter in the power steering system is often overlooked during maintenance. This filter is an integral part of the reservoir and needs to be changed together with the reservoir. BMW has used several versions of this assembly in different engines, so it's crucial to identify the correct one for your vehicle.
  • Vacuum Leaks: Other vacuum leaks, apart from the PCV valve, can cause issues in the BMW E38 2000. These leaks can lead to various running problems, including rough idling, poor performance, and increased fuel consumption. It's essential to locate and fix these leaks to maintain the vehicle's optimal performance.
  • Dreaded Shimmy: The E38 7-Series can suffer from a 'shimmy', which is a wheel-wobble that usually first shows itself under braking. This issue can be felt through the steering wheel and is often an indication of general wear in the steering system and suspension. The shimmies can be repaired, often very simply, by addressing the underlying wear and tear in the system.
  • Suspension Components: Suspension components, such as bushings, struts, and tie rods, can wear out over time, leading to a variety of handling issues, including shimmy, vibration, and poor steering feedback. Regular inspection and replacement of worn components can help maintain the vehicle's ride quality and handling characteristics.
  • Coolant Leaks: Coolant leaks can occur in various parts of the BMW E38 2000's cooling system, including the radiator, water pump, hoses, and expansion tank. Regular inspection and maintenance of the cooling system can help prevent coolant leaks and potential engine overheating issues .
  • Gearbox Issues: Gearbox issues, such as difficulty shifting, noisy operation, or slipping gears, can occur in the BMW E38 2000. These issues can be caused by various factors, including worn clutch components, low transmission fluid levels, or internal wear and tear. Regular inspection and maintenance of the gearbox can help prevent and address these issues .

In conclusion, while the BMW E38 2000 is an excellent car, it does have its share of common problems. Regular inspection and maintenance can help prevent and address these issues, ensuring the vehicle's longevity and optimal performance.
