2013 Lexus Gs450h problems
The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.
Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.
The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.
The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.
The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.
The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

Common 2013 Lexus Gs450h problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Lexus GS450h 2013, several common problems have been reported:
- Poor Handling and Pulling to One Side: Owners have reported poor handling issues with the GS450h, often experiencing the car pulling to one side. This problem is commonly attributed to the electric power steering system. To address this, it is recommended to have Lexus inspect the electric power steering system, especially if the car is still under warranty.
- Battery Pack Failure: Some owners have faced issues with the battery pack failing prematurely. Given that the GS450h is a hybrid vehicle running on both petrol and battery power, replacing the battery pack can be costly. Typically, the battery pack should last around 8 years, and if it fails earlier, owners are advised to contact Lexus for a potential free repair, especially if the car is under warranty.
- Transmission Problems: Another common issue reported by owners is related to the transmission system. Symptoms include the check engine management warning light or the check hybrid system warning light appearing on the dashboard. These issues are often linked to low pressure transmission fluid and an incorrect gear ratio, potentially caused by a faulty oil pressure switch. Replacing the oil pressure switch is a common solution to rectify these transmission problems.
These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by owners of the Lexus GS450h 2013 model. Addressing these concerns promptly and seeking assistance from authorized Lexus service centers, especially if the vehicle is under warranty, can help resolve these issues effectively.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
- VIN: JTHBE1BL3D5
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I own a 2013 GS350 RWD BASE MODEL. I have been having issues with the steering in this car since it was purchased in 2021 with100k miles. It seems to do great at lower speeds or on curvy roads, but when I drive on interstate going straight at around 70 to 80 mph is where it really becomes noticeable. The vehicle does not want to drive straight for anything. It does not pull in one certain direction; it is literally all over the road. I'd like to note that i have new shocks and upper shock mounts in the front, as well as tires all the way around, also replaced the sway bar linkages on the front and did an alignment. But the vehicle will veer from left to right with no rhyme or reason so bad that you cannot take your eyes off of the road to even adjust the ac or radio from fear of running into the concrete barricade or another vehicle. Something I'd like to add is that it really becomes prominent after about 10 to 15 min of interstate driving. I have taken it to two different Lexus dealerships and called Lexus directly. No one seems to know what I'm talking about; the first dealership told me to replace all of the parts that I previously mentioned. So, I did with no success. I have seen other GS owners complain about this online, so I know it is not just my car. This to me is a major safety concern because it had almost caused me to have several accidents personally not to mention it's just extremely annoying to buy a Lexus and to have to constantly pay attention and adjust the steering so as to not destroy the car and hit or hurt another driver. I always feel like I am going to get pulled over for a DUI. That is how bad it is. I own a 1999 Toyota corolla and that car is effortless to drive straight, I do not have to even think about it. I hope this in some way will help another GS owner to know that you are not alone if you experience this issue and maybe enough of us can cause Lexus to do the right thing here. THX, unhappy GS owner

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- Crash: 1
- Fire: 1
- VIN: JTHCE1BL8D5
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: This was an unintended acceleration with non functional braking of a Lexus GS 350. This occured on December 18 around 8:00 AM. The driver noticed an orange triangular light in the dash while travelling slowly through a neighborhood less than a mile from the incident. While approaching a lighted intersection, the car suddenly accelerated when the brake pedal was depressed. The brake pedal was stiff and did not work. The driver tried to avoid another vehicle by veering right. The car hit a curb, travelled over a small hill and ended up in a parking lot after the ensuing damage disabled the car. The driver was able to escape from the drivers door before a fire erupted on the drivers side of the engine bay. The driver's safety and any other cars or persons in the vicinity were obviously put at grave risk.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-10
- VIN: JTHCE1BL2D5
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: When driving at highway speeds for more than 10 minutes the steering becomes increasingly stiff until it starts locking the wheel in position. It takes quite a bit of force to get it to unlock and then whatever new position it's in it will lock that new position. It will lock in a straight line or in a turn so I could let go of the wheel and it will keep turning. This leads to a potentially dangerous ping ponging back and forth until I get it to lock in a position that matches the road to stay in my lane. If I slow down to below 40mph it resets back to a normal steering feel until I speed up again. The alignment and wheel balance are both good. The suspension components are not warn out to cause a change in alignment. The car does not have lane keep assist or anything that might do that on purpose. It seems quite a few other people are having this same issue and dealerships do not seem to know what it is or how to fix it. Some people have had success with replacing the steering rack and associated control unit. No warning lamps or messages appear when this happens and the steering feels perfect at lower speeds and at higher speeds for short durations. This is only a problem when I drive on the highway for an extended period. Some people think it is heat related but it happens to me in the winter as well.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-30
- VIN: JTHCE1BL6D5
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: 2013 Lexus GS 350 Stuck Wiper blades; DANGER LEVEL EXTREMELY HIGH - MAY AFFECT 2013-2015 AND 2016-2020 GS MODELS When using the wipes in either automatic mode or manual speed selection they can become stuck in the rain in the up position blocking the windshield's view. This is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Deemed a MAJOR FLAW, the wiper blades can get stuck in any position while wiping. This occurs when the wiper blades are used and it is raining. This is very hard to replicate with windshield wiper fluid. To remedy the malfunction to survive in a LIFE or DEATH moment of LIMITED VISIBILITY, the driver must quickly push the wiper lever activator up and down to reset it and or pushing in the automatic rain sensing function button. Also, when stopped at a stoplight and resuming acceleration, the rain sensor does not pick up rain at low, medium, or heavy rain and does not engage the wipers. Again, the user must re-engage the wiper system by turning it on and off again multiple times while driving over and over again, multiple times during a trip. The car should not be driven on highways at high speed during when raining or above 20 MPH.

AFTER 5 ATTEMPTS AND THROTTLING THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR BEGAN TO SPUTTER AND FINALLY STARTED. CAR WAS THEN PARKED AFTER MOVING TO A SAFE LOCATION.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-10-04
- VIN: JTHCE1BL6D5
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: WINDSHIELD WIPERS GET STUCK IN THE UP POSITION AND DO NOT WORK. MALFUNCTIONING WIPERS, NO ERROR CODE WITH NO FIX. VERY DANGEROUS UNDER EXTREME WEATHER CONDTIONS WHERE WIPERS ARE NEEDED. NOT WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM A TOYOTA PRODUCT. I DEMAND THIS BE FIXED AS I'VE HAD MUCH OLDER CARS WITH NO ISSUES OF WIPERS MALFUNCTION. I COULD CRASH, DIE OR INJURY SOMEONE BECAUSE OF THIS FAILURE. THE CAR HAS ONLY 41,900 MILES ON IT AND THE WIPERS ARE BARELY USED. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING! IT IS NOT BECAUSE I DID SOMETHING TO THE WIPERS EITHER. I HAVE NEVER GONE THROUGH AN AUTOMATIC CAR WASH AND EVEN IF I DID THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN THAT. THIS IS A LEXUS, WHERE IS THE PERFECTION?

- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING A 2013 LEXUS GS450 HYBRID ON THE 15 FREEWAY AT 50-55 MILES PER HOUR WHEN I HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION SIMILAR TO A GUNSHOT OR TIRE FAILURE IN THE CABIN AREA. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER, EXITED AND VEHICLE AND FOUND THE SUNROOF HAD EXPLODED, LEAVING AN APPROXIMATE ONE FOOT BY SIX INCH PIECE MISSING FROM THE FRONT CENTER. THE REMAINDER HAD FRACTURED INTO HUNDREDS OF PIECES AND WE COULD HEAR THE GLASS CONTINUING TO CRACK. BEING AN INSURANCE AGENT BY TRADE I IMMEDIATELY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE FOR FURTHER DAMAGE AND FOUND NONE. THE EXAMINATION OF THE SURROUNDING AREA INDICATED NO FOREIGN OBJECTS THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS. A CLOSER EXAMINATION FOUND THE GLASS HAD AN OUTWARD BEND (TOWARD THE SKY AND AWAY FROM THE CABIN) IN THE EXPLODED AREA, INDICATING THE FORCE CAUSING THE DAMAGE ORIGINATED WITHIN THE SUNROOF HOUSING. THE SUNROOF SCREEN WAS FORTUNATELY CLOSED IT WAS AN APPROXIMATELY 70 DEGREE DAY. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN IN ANY EXTREME TEMPERATURES. THERE WERE NO POTHOLES OR FLYING DEBRIS. THERE WAS NO BRIDGES OR PASSING TRUCKS THAT COULD HAVE KICKED UP AN ITEM THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED THIS.

The GS450h is an excellent car in most respects, driving smoothly and inspiring confidence. However, there are two features that I found unacceptable as a buyer. Firstly, the LED headlamps w/AFS are only available with the Luxury package, which is disappointing. The regular bi-Xenon headlamps provide minimal illumination and are worse than any we've ever had on our Lexus autos. Secondly, Lexus claims that this car gets 34MPG average, but when brand new, it only got 30.4 MPG. With less than 9K miles on it, this winter, we've gotten 29.2 MPG! I'm on top of air pressure and I don't gun the car, so it's not me; it's the car and Lexus's misleading claims. Overall, I believe that the GS450h is a great car, but these two issues need to be addressed by Lexus.

We upgraded from RX's to the GS450h for its efficiency and environmental benefits. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the bi-xenon HID lights during our first night drive. They are far superior to the headlamps we were expecting, providing a bright and expansive view. Although the LED lamps that come with the luxury package are not available on any Lexus lot, we suspect they are even better. Have you had the chance to experience the LEDs on a Lexus? We have driven the car for just over 1000 miles and are thoroughly enjoying it!

This vehicle is definitely worth the wait! It's luxurious, sporty, high-tech, and fuel-efficient. The technology is incredible. Within seconds, my phone was synced to the Bluetooth, all of my contacts were downloaded, and music was playing from my phone wirelessly. I can even play Pandora, find an open table, search on Bing, and more. If I'm lost, I can call a live person and have them map directions for me instantly. Everything works perfectly! The car has power with a smooth ride and great gas mileage. The matte bamboo definitely complements the interior, giving it a classy look. This car far exceeded my expectations!!
