Jaguar Xj problems

The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.
Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)
Overview
The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.
For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.
The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common Jaguar Xj problems
The Jaguar XJ, a luxury vehicle produced by the British automaker, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues range from engine failure to electrical system problems and suspension failures.
One of the most significant problems reported is engine failure, particularly in the 2012 model year. This issue has been the most reported problem for the 2012 Jaguar XJ, with an average cost to fix of $8,400 and an average mileage of 80,000 mi. The cause of this engine failure is not explicitly stated in the search results, but it has led to a significant number of complaints from owners.
Another common problem reported is electrical system issues, particularly around the sat-nav and infotainment systems. This has been a significant issue for some XJ owners, causing them to have a negative view of the car's reliability. Additionally, diesel models have had problems with the DPF filter, which can lead to issues with the engine.
Suspension failures are also a common problem reported by Jaguar XJ owners. The air suspension system in the XJ has been reported to have several issues, including leaking air suspension and problems with the compressor.
Finally, there have been reports of oil leaks in the Jaguar XJS models, particularly those manufactured between March 2012 and May 2013. Jaguar was forced to recall a number of these models due to oil leakage and other engine problems.
In summary, the Jaguar XJ has several common problems reported by owners, including engine failure, electrical system issues, suspension failures, and oil leaks. These issues can be costly to repair, particularly at the dealership, and can lead to a negative view of the car's reliability.
Is the Jaguar XJ a reliable car?
Much more so than you might imagine. While Jaguar languished in 29th place out of 32 in our list of most reliable used car brands, the XJ fared rather better. In fact, owners named it the second most reliable used luxury car in 2023: only 14% went wrong, and the only area of concern were non-engine electrics.

- Summary: The contact's husband owned a 2011 Jaguar XJ. The contact stated that while her husband was attempting to park in a parking space and the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle independently accelerated. The contact attempted to decrease the vehicle's speed by going over a bump however the vehicle continued to independently accelerate. The brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard and then lifted his foot off the brake pedal resulting in a crash with a median. It was unknown if any warning lights were illuminated since the events occurred rapidly. The front air bag partially deployed upon impact. The contact's husband was taken to the hospital by an ambulance where he was treated for both a neck sprain and a back sprain. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent tow yard and was later determined to be a total loss. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V557000(Air Bags) which was linked to the failure. The dealer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. - Summary: My wife and I are drivers with 50+ years of driving experience each, with clean driving records. Recently two incidents occurred while driving my 2008 Jaguar XJ that frightened us, where we have been left with no feasible explanation. There were no messages, warning lamps, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The first incident occurred in early December, 2022, with mileage of approximately 66,500 miles. On a cold evening, after traveling 2.5 miles, I was entering my garage with the brakes applied when the engine revved up and lurched forward uncontrollably, striking a vehicle in front of me. I applied brake pressure as hard as possible, but the car would not stop. If it wasn’t for this vehicle, I would have gone through the back of the garage. The force of this incident caused damage to the vehicle that was struck, as well as front-end damage to the Jaguar, with the hood ornament flying off the car. It scared me because I know my foot was not on the gas and had no idea why the engine revved up so quickly and flew forward with such force. The second incident occurred on January 7, 2023, on a cold afternoon. My wife was driving the 2008 XJ Jaguar and I was a passenger. We were pulling out of a mall parking lot, approaching a stop light where a vehicle was at a standstill in front of us. When nearly stopped, the engine suddenly revved up and the car jolted forward with such force that even with my wife ‘standing’ on the brake, the car slammed into the vehicle in front of us. If it wasn’t for that vehicle, we would have ended up in the middle of a very busy intersection with oncoming traffic. The driver in the vehicle behind us said he heard the engine roar as the car sprung forward. I do not have a police report as this accident occurred out-of-state. Two repair shops have not been able to duplicate the situation.

- Summary: I have a 2011 Jaguar XJL Supercharged with 65,000 miles that has a knocking noise and is in restricted performance mode. The timing chain and tensioner were replaced by a shop, but that did not fix the issue and I’ve been told there is internal engine damage. The internal engine damage has not been identified. The car itself is in excellent shape, but I don’t know how to proceed to address the internal engine damage as the shop is recommending replacing the engine with a used engine from the salvage yard, but that concerns me as I don’t know the history of the engine from the salvage yard. I've done some research and apparently this is a common issue. Does anyone have any insight on how to proceed with an Arizona recall as this is not normal? Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Once you experience driving a Jaguar, you won't want to drive anything else. In my experience, the Jag is the most comfortable, quiet, plush, and powerful car I have ever owned. It even outshines my Lincolns and Mercedes, and at a lower cost than my Benz. Since purchasing in 2013, I have not had any issues with the car. When it comes to required service, the dealer picks up my car and leaves me a new Jag to use, delivering my car back to me when finished. On trips, the Jag delivers an impressive 30 mpg! Everywhere I go, people admire the car and comment on how good it looks. Passengers in the back seat are always impressed with the space. I am so pleased with my current Jag that I am about to purchase another one. The only thing I dislike is the engine shutting off at stop lights, but thankfully there is an 'eco' button to disable it. I loved my previous Jag so much that I traded it in for a new one with even more features, and it has been trouble-free for the last 4 thousand miles. This car is truly awesome! As of 5/30/19, my 2016 Jag has 20,000 miles on it and has not had a single problem. It is head and shoulders nicer than my 550 Benz was, and much more reliable.

I've owned four Mercedes Benz's and two Lexus's. Among them were two S500's (an '01 and an '02), an '03 SL 500, and a 2010 E350 that we purchased earlier this year. I still have my '02 S500, and I absolutely love it. I bought all my vehicles new. Before this recent change, I wouldn't even consider a Jaguar. There was nothing exciting about the vehicle at all (the same way I feel about Lexus now - it's a safe, boring car). I had actually gone to the dealership to look at the Panamera when the salesman suggested I should check out the new XJ. He walked me over there, and I was sold! This is the sexiest car ever built. Go ahead and spend more money if you wish; you will NOT get more car!

Vehicle year: 2014
I'm on my second Jag in just three years! I started with the XF, which I thought was amazing, until I was given an XJ as a loaner during scheduled maintenance. Within two months, I was driving the XJL and I've had it for about six months now. I bought it used with only 11k miles and it's been an absolute joy to drive. It's a real head-turner and so fast that I had to set the alarm when driving on the freeway. I even had to buy a radar detector after getting stopped by the highway patrol over Memorial Day weekend. I was going 90 and thought I was done for, but the officer complimented the car and let me off with a warning. I was shocked! The car has never let me down when it comes to power. You press the accelerator and it just keeps going, no lag or hesitation, just pure power. And the sound of the engine is just lovely. When the sports mode is engaged, it's a completely different driving experience. The car is already fast, but the sport mode adds a bit more edge. You have the option to use the paddle shifters when in sports mode, but the shifting is so smooth and in tune with the car that I let it shift itself. The back seat is unbelievable with the picnic tables and climate controls. You can even cross your legs in the back seat! The only downside is the touch screen interface for the Entertainment System. It leaves a lot to be desired and isn't very responsive. However, the voice recognition system works like a charm, so I use that when I need to set up Navigation or play with the sound system. The fit and finish of this car is truly second to none, and the ride is absolutely incredible. It exudes luxury in an understated way that is hard to match. A friend of mine recently got a new Benz, and while I have owned them in the past, the new ones seem a bit gimmicky to me. For example, the Benz logo pops open and a camera comes out when backing up, and when the door is open, it shines the words Mercedes Benz on the ground. I find these features a bit tacky, to be honest. However, if you are looking for a car that stands out from the usual and offers sports car power and awesome luxury, then this is definitely the car for you!

I've had two previous Jaguars and absolutely adored them for their speed, comfort, and beauty. One thing I appreciate about these cars is that they stand out from the typical German crowd. Unlike the German cars, they offer a variety of color and interior choices, which is a refreshing change. By the way, I've also owned several German cars in the past.

This car (CPO from a dealer) was a great value for the money, but unfortunately, it stopped working just 90 days after the warranty expired. It was a frustrating experience to be stranded on the side of the freeway with strange sounds and steam coming from the car. In comparison, our other cars, a Mercedes E320 with 325,000 miles and a Nissan Versa with 145,000 miles, have had no issues. Currently, our Jaguar is in the shop, and we are waiting for the repair bill. UPDATE: Unfortunately, a new engine is required, which is not ideal. Since the replacement, we have had to replace poorly designed plastic parts that were leaking. It's disappointing that this issue wasn't addressed with a recall, especially since we've noticed that three other Jaguars in the shop have the same problem.

I have to say, this car is absolutely stunning! It's definitely one of the best-looking vehicles I've ever owned. Unfortunately, there were some mechanical issues that have been a problem for Jaguar for years. I bought this black beauty in 2013 from a third-party dealer with just 10K miles on it. The previous owner was the wife of a CEO and hardly ever drove it. Fast forward to July 2017, and after driving it from Miami Beach to the Florida Turnpike, which is only a seven-mile drive, the engine blew without any warning lights. It went into protective mode, and by the time we pulled over, the damage was done. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but there was smoke everywhere, and gas and oil leaked everywhere. Unfortunately, the car was out of warranty (which ended in Nov 2015), and after a long process with Jaguar USA HQ executive escalations, the best they could do was take 50% off the retail cost of the new engine. I ended up spending over $18,000 to put a new engine in a luxury Jaguar that had just 56K miles on it. All service records were provided, and it was maintained at the dealer, with synthetic oil changes done yearly or every 10K miles. The only thing that wasn't done was the 5-year maintenance. My experience dealing with Jaguar USA was not great, but I'm glad they were able to offer a In the end, as consumers, we all have to make our own choices. I have owned an F150 with 130K miles and no issues, a Benz with 150K miles and no issues, and currently own a Porsche with 30K miles and no issues. However, I had a bad experience with Jaguar and will not be purchasing another one, no matter how sexy they may look! For those of you reading this post, please be aware that Jaguar USA seems to be only interested in lining their pockets, with no regards for their consumers, especially if they are out of warranty. Therefore, my recommendation is to not walk, but run away from Jaguar!

Imagine a car that combines 5.0 L horse power with practicality and comfortable seating for 5. The driving experience is stylish, fun, and engaging, with enough v8 power to make you feel the thrill. The ride is intuitive and not too bumpy, making it a joy to drive. However, there were some issues with the car breaking down unexpectedly and no one being able to diagnose the problem. Despite its beauty and fun test drive, owning this car was a nightmare.

I have been a BMW fan for 42 years, but I must say that the 2011 Jaguar XJL Portfolio was a great car when it was new. It was fun to drive, had a beautiful interior and amenities, was fast, handled well, and had a head-turning styling that was fantastic on the highway, especially at 80+mph. However, after a while, some of the Jaguar myths of old started to manifest, even after the complete TaTa retool. The automated moonroof cover was the first to go, which came off the tracks and cost $800 to repair. Then, the radio, nav, and AC control unit went out, which cost $2400. An alternator failure stranded us in the middle of Texas, which cost $900. The oil pan also started to leak, which cost $800. Finally, when the front main seal started leaking, all before 40k miles, it was time to go back to a BMW. I did buy a 1991 XJS v-12 convertible as well, and while it was not without its idiosyncrasies, it has provided a lot of enjoyment, and you can still work on them yourself. Overall, if you have a lot of money and a daily driver, a Jag can be a wonderful second car to own.
