The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 2015 Jaguar Xj problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Jaguar XJ 2015, several common problems have been reported:

  • Roof Hydraulic System Malfunction:
    • Owners have faced issues with the roof either not opening or closing properly or taking an extended time to do so. This problem is frequently attributed to substandard hydraulic fluid. To address this, flushing the fluid and replacing it with Jaguar-approved hydraulic fluid is recommended.
  • Burning Smell Due to Oil Pan Gasket Leak:
    • A common complaint among XJ owners is a burning smell inside and outside the car when the engine is running. This issue is often caused by a leaking engine oil pan gasket. Owners can find replacement gaskets to address this problem, which are relatively easier to install than expected.
  • Electrical Issues:
    • Some owners have reported various electrical problems, particularly related to the sat-nav, infotainment system, and electrically adjustable seats. It is advisable to carefully inspect these systems when purchasing a used Jaguar XJ to ensure they are functioning correctly. Additionally, diesel models have had issues with the DPF filter, so it's crucial to verify that any necessary work has been carried out by a Jaguar dealer or reputable specialist.

These common problems with the Jaguar XJ 2015 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any emerging issues to ensure the optimal performance and longevity of the vehicle.

  • Manufacturer: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain model year 2015 Jaguar XJ vehicles manufactured July 2, 2014, to December 4, 2014. The affected vehicles may have an incorrect description of the operation of Occupant Sensor System (OSS) in the owner's manual. Since the manual does not correspond with the actual Air Bag Status Indicator Lamp, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
  • Consequence: If the occupant does not correctly understand how air bag functions, they may be at an increased risk of personal injury in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners, and supply a supplement to add to the owner's handbook, free of charge. The recall began March 2, 2015. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is J050.

  • Consequence: A brake fluid leak may reduce the vehicle's braking ability, requiring additional distance to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake line junctions, tightening them as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 16, 2015. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is J048.

Negative 2015 Jaguar Xj car reviews

  1. Joe Grant 2025-04-22

The XJ I purchased at a great price with 44,000 miles has been a fantastic car. Despite the starting problem that has recently surfaced, I am confident in my ability to address the issue. Although the certified warranty has expired, I am not deterred and will take the necessary steps to ensure that my car is running smoothly once again. While it may require some maintenance, I am willing to put in the effort to keep this gorgeous car in top condition.

  2. Hal Cassin 2025-03-25

This car (CPO from a dealer) was a great value for the money, but unfortunately, it stopped working just 90 days after the warranty expired. It was a frustrating experience to be stranded on the side of the freeway with strange sounds and steam coming from the car. In comparison, our other cars, a Mercedes E320 with 325,000 miles and a Nissan Versa with 145,000 miles, have had no issues. Currently, our Jaguar is in the shop, and we are waiting for the repair bill. UPDATE: Unfortunately, a new engine is required, which is not ideal. Since the replacement, we have had to replace poorly designed plastic parts that were leaking. It's disappointing that this issue wasn't addressed with a recall, especially since we've noticed that three other Jaguars in the shop have the same problem.

The issue lies with the fuel pump and computer box.

Positive 2015 Jaguar Xj car reviews

  1. Felix Greenholt 2025-04-18

I cross-shopped all the major cars in the class to find a luxurious car with a definite performance edge. After careful consideration, I decided that the Maserati Ghibli was too much of an unknown and its interior wasn't up to snuff. The S Class was superb, but it was too large and too expensive for my needs. The BMW 7 series needs updating, and it looks and feels like a bloated 3 Series. As for Audi's, they just didn't excite me. Ultimately, I'm very happy with my decision. The car is fast, yet very comfortable on long road trips. Despite its size, it drives small. The quality is outstanding, and the attention to detail makes it one of the best interiors for any amount of money. The gas mileage has been amazingly good for such a large car, which is where the all-aluminum construction pays off. I recently traded this car for a sports SUV because I needed more cargo carrying capacity, but I have some regrets. The XJ was perhaps the most luxurious and prestigious car I've owned. Inside, you felt special with that Jaguar interior. It was quiet and fast on the road, reliable, and returned 32mpg on the highway while cruising at 80mph. I didn't buy another Jaguar because I don't like the interior of the F-Pace when compared to other premium SUVs. It just didn't feel like a Jaguar to me.

  2. Keshaun Rolfson 2025-04-11

This is one of the most underrated luxury cars out there. Despite what some experts may say, the XJ Jaguar is a fantastic choice for those looking for a sporty luxury car. It's powerful, quick, comfortable, and economical, with an impressive 35 miles per gallon on the highway and 25 to 30 around town. If you want to accelerate quickly, this car has got you covered. People comment all the time about how beautiful it is. While I've owned LS Lexus, Mercedes S class, and BMW, I have to say that the XJ Jaguar has the best exterior and interior beauty with economical and powerful performance. Overall, it's a great choice for anyone looking for a luxury car that has it all.

  3. Tad Metz 2025-04-09

UPDATE: Hi there! Just wanted to share that this is still my absolute favorite car out of all the ones I've owned. It's incredibly reliable, super quiet at cruise speeds, and handles corners like a dream. The only downside has been the dealer service, which has been a bit inept - I've had to return 4 times just to reset the service indicator warning. But overall, it's simply the best car I've ever owned! I've owned many Mercedes in the past, but I grew tired of their mundane interiors and lately their Rube Goldberg exterior styling. The interior of this car is so much more luxurious and inviting than any Mercedes I've owned. The doors close with a solid 'thunk', which really reflects the quality of the car. The instrumentation is straightforward, and the audio quality is far beyond anything we've heard from Mercedes. Despite the negative reviews of the audio/navigation system, we've found this system to be much more user-friendly and easier to program than Mercedes' clunky system.

  4. Kenton Borer 2025-03-02

Once you experience driving a Jaguar, you won't want to drive anything else. In my experience, the Jag is the most comfortable, quiet, plush, and powerful car I have ever owned. It even outshines my Lincolns and Mercedes, and at a lower cost than my Benz. Since purchasing in 2013, I have not had any issues with the car. When it comes to required service, the dealer picks up my car and leaves me a new Jag to use, delivering my car back to me when finished. On trips, the Jag delivers an impressive 30 mpg! Everywhere I go, people admire the car and comment on how good it looks. Passengers in the back seat are always impressed with the space. I am so pleased with my current Jag that I am about to purchase another one. The only thing I dislike is the engine shutting off at stop lights, but thankfully there is an 'eco' button to disable it. I loved my previous Jag so much that I traded it in for a new one with even more features, and it has been trouble-free for the last 4 thousand miles. This car is truly awesome! As of 5/30/19, my 2016 Jag has 20,000 miles on it and has not had a single problem. It is head and shoulders nicer than my 550 Benz was, and much more reliable.

  5. Eugene O'Keefe 2025-02-09

You've owned an impressive 175 cars, including a few prior Jaguars. It's great to hear that your 2014 XJR is well sorted and has required minimal maintenance after 32000 miles. As a tall, big man, you find the car exceptionally comfortable, and the handling is great for a car this size. Although there is a very slight vibration felt through the steering wheel, it's hardly noticeable. The build quality and materials are superior, and you love the car. It's clear that you're a frequent trader, but it's difficult to find reasons not to keep the Jag. This may be your favorite car of all time. The car is relatively uncommon, stylish, smooth, and when you put your foot in it, it's off to the races. While the navigation is fine, you prefer to use Google maps most often, which is more up to date.
