Overview
The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.
For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.
The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

- Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America (Jaguar) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jaguar XJ vehicles manufactured February 6, 2014, to July 23, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the brake line junctions under the vehicle may leak brake fluid.
- Consequence: A brake fluid leak may reduce the vehicle's braking ability, requiring additional distance to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake line junctions, tightening them as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 16, 2015. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is J048.

- Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 XJ, XF and XK vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the toe links, components used to control the alignment of the rear wheels, can separate from the rear sub-frame.
- Consequence: If a toe link separates from the rear sub-frame, a loss of vehicle stability and directional control may result, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Jaguar notified owners on May 8, 2014, and dealers will replace the nut and washer assembly on the rear toe links, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin around May 27, 2014. Owners may contact Jaguar at 1-855-524-8278. Jaguar's number for this recall is J037.

If you're searching for the unique features of the 2005 - 2008 XJL models, unfortunately, you won't find them in the newer models. I had a 2005 XJ8L, with an all-black interior and exterior, tinted windows, and I affectionately called her 'Betsy.' I was the proud owner of this car for 10.5 years, during which time I put 117,300 miles on her. I received compliments on her every week, until my wife unfortunately totaled her while she was parked in 11/2017. State Farm insurance gave me a very fair payout for the car. I replaced 'Betsy' with a 2014 XJL AWD Portfolio, Rhodium Silver, which had all the bells and whistles of the AWD 'Portfolio,' including a panoramic roof. However, the class and distinction of my 2005 model is missing, not to mention the iconic 'Leaper' hood ornament. Initially, I wasn't interested in the newly styled Jaguar XJ, but at the end of the day, no other vehicle in my price range could match the distinction of the Jaguar XJ. I don't have any major complaints about the car, except that the earlier model XJs had a more distinguished and classy appearance. Additionally, it seems that the mileage isn't as good.

The new design is definitely eye-catching. If you're a luxury car driver, the SuperCharged will place you in a status of your own. I love the driving feel, when all you have to do is slightly place your foot on the accelerator and watch out, you may be getting pulled over before you know it. It's a shame how other luxury manufacturers either charge you for options that are standard in the SuperCharged. Additionally, you have more interior options to choose from than, say, the MB S550.

The 2011 XJ rightfully takes its place as the finest car in the class. Without question, the XJ exudes elegance and sophistication with a warmth and personality not found in its Teutonic rivals. This is the first true 21st century luxury car. Prrr.

The car I currently own is the best one yet! I've had the pleasure of owning several great cars in the past, including the MB-SL, Lexus, BMW, and Nissan Z. However, this car is by far the most fun and fastest machine I've ever driven. Surprisingly, it's actually my wife's car! If you have the opportunity to take it for a test drive, I'm confident you'll fall in love with it and want to make it your own.

The 83 XJ6 was stately and stable, the 98 XJ8 had elegance with performance. This 2011 XJ, with the interior upgrade package, has all of the above attributes on steroids. The steering is very quick and precise, and the acceleration and braking are awesome. Jaguar has truly outdone themselves with this car, providing all the bells and whistles expected at this price point, along with the beautiful styling and brilliant performance expected of Jaguars. It's safe to say that this is a world-class car.

I have been a BMW fan for 42 years, but I must say that the 2011 Jaguar XJL Portfolio was a great car when it was new. It was fun to drive, had a beautiful interior and amenities, was fast, handled well, and had a head-turning styling that was fantastic on the highway, especially at 80+mph. However, after a while, some of the Jaguar myths of old started to manifest, even after the complete TaTa retool. The automated moonroof cover was the first to go, which came off the tracks and cost $800 to repair. Then, the radio, nav, and AC control unit went out, which cost $2400. An alternator failure stranded us in the middle of Texas, which cost $900. The oil pan also started to leak, which cost $800. Finally, when the front main seal started leaking, all before 40k miles, it was time to go back to a BMW. I did buy a 1991 XJS v-12 convertible as well, and while it was not without its idiosyncrasies, it has provided a lot of enjoyment, and you can still work on them yourself. Overall, if you have a lot of money and a daily driver, a Jag can be a wonderful second car to own.

This car seems to have some electronic issues. It tends to forget presets and the battery dies unexpectedly. However, I understand that every car has its own quirks. It's possible that the 5-star reviews were written during the first few months of ownership.

I've had my XJL SC for 16 weeks now. Unfortunately, I had to take it to the shop just 2 weeks after taking delivery to have multiple rattles and pops repaired. Although it took 3 weeks to get it back, I was happy to find that it was free of pops and rattles. However, yesterday I noticed that the audio system was only putting out sound on the passenger side. I hoped it was a fluke, but unfortunately, the same problem occurred this morning. I must admit that this car is very compelling to drive and on the days that everything works, it is a true pleasure. However, the build quality and reliability have been abysmal.
