The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 2013 Jaguar Xj problems

The Jaguar XJ 2013 is known for several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most serious issues is engine failure, which was reported by an owner who experienced a low coolant light popping up on the dash, causing the engine to stall and shut off

. This resulted in the need for a new engine, highlighting the potential for significant repair costs.

Another common problem with the Jaguar XJ 2013 is fuel system issues. Some owners have reported unintended acceleration, while others have experienced vibrations and shuttering from the car

. Jaguar itself has acknowledged creaking and knocking noises from the suspension, along with vibrations, which have been reported in various Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)

The diesel engine in the XJ 2013 has also had issues. Early versions of the 3-liter TDV6 engine, specifically the 2.7 TDV6 used in the S Type and early versions of the XF, had a known issue of oil pump housing and catastrophic failure of the crankshaft in Land Rovers

. While the 3-liter didn't appear to resolve this issue entirely, failures are much less common. However, faulty oil level sensors and EGR valves are still a concern, requiring replacement or cleaning to prevent fault codes

The 2-liter forcing the turbo engine, a Ford EcoBoost unit, has also had problems with low-pressure and high-pressure fuel pumps failing, although the frequency of these failures is not specified

In addition to these issues, the Jaguar XJ 2013 has had problems with its electrical systems, particularly around the sat-nav and infotainment.

While the XJ finished top in the luxury car class in a recent reliability survey, with an excellent overall score of 94.3%, Jaguar as a brand did not fare as well, finishing in a disappointing 26th place out of 31 manufacturers.

In summary, the Jaguar XJ 2013 has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including engine failure, fuel system issues, electrical problems, and issues with the diesel engine. Regular maintenance and inspections by a Jaguar dealer or reputable specialist can help prevent or address these issues, but repair costs can be significant.

What problems did the Jaguar XJ have?

Water pumps on 5.0 V8 and 3.0 Supercharged XJ models are prone to failure, sometimes they can fail in less than 20,000 miles. This is because coolant gets inside the bearing housing corroding the water pump bearing.

Is Jaguar XJ a reliable car?

Likewise any work on the engines, and always check for a full service history. As far as reliability goes, there's some good news. The XJ finished top in the luxury car class in our most recent reliability survey, with an excellent overall score of 94.3%.

What engine is in Jaguar XJ 2013?

The new base engine, a 3.0-liter, 340-horsepower V-6, with 360 lb-ft of torque, is supercharged. Two other supercharged engines are V-8's: a 5.0-liter, 470-horsepower unit, producing torque of 424 lb-ft and a 5.0-liter, 510-horsepower brute with torque muscle of 461 lb-ft, for caffeinated forward motion.

Is Jaguar XJ expensive to maintain?

Overall, Jaguars are considerably more expensive to maintain and repair than the average vehicle, according to RepairPal. Reportedly, Jaguar owners can also expect to make more trips to the repair shop than average and pay heftier fees while there.

  • Manufacturer: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE
  • Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain model year 2013 Jaguar XJ vehicles manufactured May 21, 2012, through July 10, 2012. The generic software calibration installed on the vehicles' Restraints Control Module (RCM) may not meet the specification for proper operation of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). As such, these vehicles do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
  • Consequence: Vehicles that have the generic software may put the occupants at an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will upload new software for the Restraints Control Module, free of charge. The recall began on July 8, 2014. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-855-524-8278. Jaguar's number for this recall is J040.

  • Consequence: If a toe link separates from the rear sub-frame, a loss of vehicle stability and directional control may result, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Jaguar notified owners on May 8, 2014, and dealers will replace the nut and washer assembly on the rear toe links, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin around May 27, 2014. Owners may contact Jaguar at 1-855-524-8278. Jaguar's number for this recall is J037.

Thus, the vehicles do not conform to Part 567, "Certification."
  • Consequence: If the certification label does not specify all the necessary information or the vehicle weight range could result in the vehicle being overloaded and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners and dealers will re-acquire and will provide a replacement vehicle or a full refund of the purchase, free of charge. Owners may contact Jaguar at 1-855-524-8278. Jaguar's number associated with this recall is J039.

Negative 2013 Jaguar Xj car reviews

I have to say, this car is absolutely stunning! It's definitely one of the best-looking vehicles I've ever owned. Unfortunately, there were some mechanical issues that have been a problem for Jaguar for years. I bought this black beauty in 2013 from a third-party dealer with just 10K miles on it. The previous owner was the wife of a CEO and hardly ever drove it. Fast forward to July 2017, and after driving it from Miami Beach to the Florida Turnpike, which is only a seven-mile drive, the engine blew without any warning lights. It went into protective mode, and by the time we pulled over, the damage was done. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but there was smoke everywhere, and gas and oil leaked everywhere. Unfortunately, the car was out of warranty (which ended in Nov 2015), and after a long process with Jaguar USA HQ executive escalations, the best they could do was take 50% off the retail cost of the new engine. I ended up spending over $18,000 to put a new engine in a luxury Jaguar that had just 56K miles on it. All service records were provided, and it was maintained at the dealer, with synthetic oil changes done yearly or every 10K miles. The only thing that wasn't done was the 5-year maintenance. My experience dealing with Jaguar USA was not great, but I'm glad they were able to offer a In the end, as consumers, we all have to make our own choices. I have owned an F150 with 130K miles and no issues, a Benz with 150K miles and no issues, and currently own a Porsche with 30K miles and no issues. However, I had a bad experience with Jaguar and will not be purchasing another one, no matter how sexy they may look! For those of you reading this post, please be aware that Jaguar USA seems to be only interested in lining their pockets, with no regards for their consumers, especially if they are out of warranty. Therefore, my recommendation is to not walk, but run away from Jaguar!

Imagine a car that combines 5.0 L horse power with practicality and comfortable seating for 5. The driving experience is stylish, fun, and engaging, with enough v8 power to make you feel the thrill. The ride is intuitive and not too bumpy, making it a joy to drive. However, there were some issues with the car breaking down unexpectedly and no one being able to diagnose the problem. Despite its beauty and fun test drive, owning this car was a nightmare.

I've had my XJL SC for 16 weeks now. Unfortunately, I had to take it to the shop just 2 weeks after taking delivery to have multiple rattles and pops repaired. Although it took 3 weeks to get it back, I was happy to find that it was free of pops and rattles. However, yesterday I noticed that the audio system was only putting out sound on the passenger side. I hoped it was a fluke, but unfortunately, the same problem occurred this morning. I must admit that this car is very compelling to drive and on the days that everything works, it is a true pleasure. However, the build quality and reliability have been abysmal.

  4. Jaylin Turcotte 2024-09-02

The issue lies with the fuel pump and computer box.

  5. Connor Murazik 2024-08-13

Firstly, I would like to express my disappointment with the new design of the Jaguar. The XJ series was known for its grace, style, and beauty, which seems to have been lost in the recent redesign. Owning a Jaguar used to lend a certain panache, but now it looks like any other car on the road. Even the iconic 'leaping jaguar' has been removed. It's a shame that the brand has lost its uniqueness. I hope that Jaguar will consider bringing back the classic design elements that made it such an iconic brand. Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts.

Positive 2013 Jaguar Xj car reviews

  1. Irving Hessel 2025-02-19

I am thrilled to share my experience with my 2011 SJL SS, which I custom built and ordered in March 2010. Despite waiting until the end of August 2010 for delivery, every moment was worth it. I had the pleasure of driving the Supercharged 470hp with all the extra add ons that are standard on the Superport and just had to have the ultimate with 40Hp more. The long wheel base is great, handles like a sports car (almost) and goes like the new Ferrari, only half a second slower in 1/mile at 112mph. It eats up miles with ease on long trips of 12hrs without driver fatigue. In my opinion, it is one of the best cars ever made and at a bargain price. The metallic silver finish looks like a block of machined aircraft aluminum, and the sound system is better than any I have heard from expensive stereo/theater systems.

  2. Ulises Rohan 2024-11-17

I just wanted to say that I completely agree with all the other reviews about this car. It's truly an incredible machine on the road. I've owned flagship German cars before, but I have to say that if you drive this car, you'll find it hard to choose an S class, 7 series, or an A8. The supercharged version is incredibly quick, and the interior of this car is better than all of its German competitors. I've always been a fan of Jaguar, but I was never comfortable enough to buy one due to reliability concerns. However, this car has changed the game for Jaguar.

  3. Rickie Gusikowski 2024-11-16

What a great example of a brand! The previous XJ was reliable but needed an update. I just left the car wash and couldn't help but feel sorry for the Panamera next to me! It's a four-seater that doesn't seem to know if it's a sedan or not, and costs an extra $30,000. I haven't seen a standout car since the 2005 Chrysler 300, until now. This car should definitely be the luxury Car of the Year and the front row car at five-star restaurants. Move over Audi, BMW, and Mercedes!

  4. Julius Kuhlman 2024-11-05

Congratulations on your purchase of a used Jaguar XJL Supercharged in March! You had a lot of great options to choose from, including the Range Rover, Porsche Panamera, and Maserati Quattroporte, but it sounds like the Jaguar XJ was the perfect fit for you. The cabin is luxurious, with stitched leather, glossy burl wood, and chrome accents. You'll love the fully loaded features, including ventilated and massaging seats. The engine is a powerful supercharged 5.0L V-8 that delivers an impressive 470 hp. The digital instrument cluster is a standout feature, with a well-lit display that resembles real gauges and allows you to easily access navigation and radio controls. The exterior is sleek and stylish, with a sexy roofline and no radio sharkfin. We're confident that you'll be thrilled with your purchase!

  5. Stephon Douglas 2024-11-04

I recently purchased this Jaguar just three days ago. Although I have owned a BMW 750iL in the past, this car is truly special. The interior is tasteful and beautiful, and the seats are incredibly comfortable. The exterior is simply gorgeous, and I have received many compliments while driving it. While I did not purchase the car for the attention, it is always nice to receive positive feedback. It is still too early for me to report on reliability, but everything seems to be going well so far. I highly recommend this car.
