2006 Jaguar X-type problems
The Jaguar X-Type is a car built by British marque Jaguar from 2001 to 2009. Considered a large family car in Europe and a compact car in the US, the X-Type has either a four-door saloon or a five-door estate body style and was sold in the compact-executive market segment. Given the internal designation X400, its engine is in the front and there are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. In addition to offering Jaguar's first estate car in series production, the X-Type would ultimately introduce its first diesel engine, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive configuration.
The X-Type was developed during the period when Jaguar was owned by Ford as a division of its Premier Automotive Group (PAG) (1999-2009) — and marked Jaguar's entry into the critical compact executive segment. The programme aimed to double the marque's worldwide sales — requiring expansion of engineering resources, factory capacity, marketing capability, sales support and service. At launch, Autocar called the X-Type "the most important Jaguar ever".
With annual projections of 100,000 sales, the X-Type recorded a production of 350,000 over its eight-year manufacturing run.

Common 2006 Jaguar X-type problems
The Jaguar X-Type, produced between 2001 and 2009, is known for several common problems and issues that owners have reported over the years. These issues span across various components of the vehicle, including the suspension, engine, clutch and gearbox, chrome trim, brakes and handbrakes, door latches, and indicators.
Suspension issues are a common complaint among X-Type owners, with some reporting premature wear and problems with various components of the suspension system, such as bushings, control arms, and other parts. These issues can lead to symptoms like a rough ride, uneven tire wear, or handling problems.
Engine problems in the X-Type have been widely reported, with issues ranging from coolant leaks and water pump problems to oil leaks caused by faulty valve cover gaskets or oil pan gaskets. Ignition coil failure, leading to misfires, and problems with the timing chain tensioner, thermostat, and fuel pump have also been reported.
Clutch and gearbox issues are another common problem in the X-Type. Some drivers have complained about the clutch, which can cause problems with changing gears, such as being too slow or rough, slipping out of gear, juddering, or shivering. These issues could be due to low or dirty gearbox oil, faulty solenoids, sensors, valves, or internal wear and tear.
Problems with the chrome trim have also been reported, with owners complaining about the trim on the exterior window seals bubbling and peeling off, especially on older models. The trim on the rear quarter glass can become loose and fall off, allowing dirt and water to enter the vehicle and cause even more problems. The trim can also become cloudy and dull because of salt and dirt exposure while on the road.
Brake and handbrake problems are another concern for X-Type owners. Some have reported that the brake pads and discs wear down faster than expected, requiring more frequent replacement. Others have experienced occasional issues with the handbrake not working correctly on an incline or problems engaging and disengaging it. Corrosion or lack of lubrication can also result in seized brake callipers, which can affect braking performance and cause damage to the brake discs and pads.
Door latch problems are common in the X-Type, with owners reporting issues like the door sensor breaking or failing, making the car think that the door is always open, even when it isn't. This glitch can impact the central locking system, alarm, interior lights, and even the car battery. Problems with door wiring, such as damage, breakage, or corrosion, can also disrupt signals between the door and the car, resulting in electrical faults and errors.
Indicator problems have also been reported in the X-Type, with issues like the external indicator breaking while the interior light continues to flash, breaking UK law. Other drivers have reported that the indicator bulbs stop working or become dim because they are old, worn out, or corroded. A few have reported that the indicator stalk, or lever, stops working or breaks because of faulty wiring or connectors.
In summary, the Jaguar X-Type has a range of recurrent issues that potential buyers should be aware of, including suspension problems, engine issues, clutch and gearbox problems, chrome trim issues, brake and handbrake problems, door latch issues, and indicator problems. These issues can vary in severity and frequency, and some may require more extensive repairs or replacements than others.
Why are Jaguar X types so cheap?
Jaguar had high hopes that the X-Type model would make the brand much more popular, but it did not sell as well as they expected. As a result, used X-Types are now very reasonably priced, even though they still drive nicely and have a unique look.
What problems did the Jaguar X-Type have in 2004?
A number of X-types built between February and March 2004 had sensor issues. The yaw-rate sensor has been known to internally delaminate, which could result in uneven and unexpected application of the brakes. Some cars built between January and February 2004 could have problems with their brakes.
How long do Jaguar X-Type last?
Most Jaguar vehicles will last for at least 150,000 miles, but there's a lot that a driver can do to push this number much higher. With regular oil replacement, belt changes, spark plug replacement, and other basic maintenance services, you can ensure that your Jaguar lasts for 200,000 miles or more.
What is the rear suspension problem with the Jaguar X-Type?
Suspension. Suspension on both Jaguar X-type and Jaguar XF models has been known to succumb to wear and tear over time. The rear suspension in particular is subject to decay. The problem is first identifiable from a knocking noise if the car is driven over speed bumps and/or rough surfaces.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-28
- VIN: SAJWA82B66S
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: WHILE STOPPED IN THE ROAD WAITING FOR ANOTHER CAR. WITH FOOT ON BRAKE, THE CAR SUDDENLY GOES FULL THROTTLE. DRIVER HAS BOTH FEET APPLIED ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR STILL MOVES FORWARD BURNING RUBBER, AND THEN AFTER A FEW SECONDS IT GOES BACK TO IDLE. THE CAR DOES THIS ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR, THE LAST TIME DOING DAMAGE TO A CAR IN FRONT OF IT. THIS IS THE FIFTH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. THE CAR IS IDLING NORMALLY WITH THE RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND IT WILL JUST GO FULL THROTTLE ALL BY ITSELF. IT HAS HAPPENED ENOUGH THAT WE KNOW WE DO NOT HAVE BOTH THE BRAKE AND THE GAS PEDAL DEPRESSED. FROM DOING ONLINE RESEARCH I BELIEVE JAGUAR AND TOYOTA / LEXUS USED THE SAME SYSTEM FOR CONTROLLING ACCELERATION. I REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY AFTER THE FENDER BENDER, IT EVIDENTLY DID NOT HELP.

I HAVE CALLED JAGUAR AND THEY BLAME THE DRIVER. I REPLACED THE THROTTLE WHICH CONTAINED THE SAME TPS SENSOR THAT HAS PLAGUED TOYOTAS. I AM GOING TO REPLACE THE PEDAL SENSOR AND IF THAT DOESN'T WORK I GUESS I WILL SELL THE CAR. EACH TIME THIS HAPPENS THE CAR IS STOPPED WITH THE RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE. THE ACCIDENT WAS AT A SCHOOL WAITING IN A LINE OF STOPPED VEHICLES WAITING TO PICKUP STUDENTS.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-04-21
- VIN: SAJWA51A36W
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THAT IT HAPPENED. IT HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE DATE WAS OR THE MILEAGE. HOWEVER, I DO REMEMBER THAT IT HAPPENED IN NOVEMBER, 2013. ON APRIL 21, 2015, I WAS LEAVING A STORE. AS I PULLED OUT OF THE PARKING LOT, I HAD TO STOP TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NOT ANY TRAFFIC IN THE HIGHWAY BEFORE LEAVING, BUT THERE WAS A TRUCK APPROACHING. I TAPPED THE BRAKES AND THE CAR TOOK OFF IN THE HIGHWAY RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK. LUCKILY THE DRIVER OF THE TRUCK SAW ME AND APPLIED HIS BRAKES. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A TRAGEDY. NOW FOR THE FIRST OCCASION, I WAS IN THE INSIDE LANE OF A MAJOR HIGHWAY AND WAS TRYING TO STOP FOR A RED LIGHT. I STARTED TO BRAKE AND THE CAR TOOK OFF. I HAD TO SWITCH OVER IN THE OUTSIDE LANE SO THAT I WOULDN'T REAR END THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS LUCKY THIS TIME BECAUSE THERE WASN'T ANY TRAFFIC IN THE OUTSIDE LANE. NOW I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE I KNOW IT IS A DEATH TRAP. I DO NOT WANT TO HURT MYSELF OR ANYONE ELSE ON THE HIGHWAY. I NEED SOME HELP NOW! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! I JUST PURCHASED THE CAR IN APRIL, 2013. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT OR KILLED. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL CAR, BUT AS I SAID BEFORE, "IT IS A DEATH TRAP"! *TR

AFTER THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME HAD GONE, I STARTED MY CAR TO SEE IF THE ENGINE WOULD RUN PROPERLY. IT SEEMED TO BE OKAY, SO I CAREFULLY DROVE TO MY HOME WHICH WAS ABOUT THREE MORE MILES. SEVERAL WEEKS PRIOR, I HAD A SIMILAR INCIDENT WHEN I WAS PARKING AT THE GROCERY STORE, BUT I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF TURNING OFF THE ENGINE. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR TO LEAVE THE GROCERY STORE, EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE OKAY AND I DIDN'T THINK ANY MORE OF IT. I FOUND SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE ON LINE THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM BUT NONE OF THEM COULD PROVE IT TO THEIR DEALER AND NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT. I GUESS IT WILL TAKE SOMEONE GETTING KILLED BEFORE ANYTHING GETS DONE ABOUT THIS SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM WITH THE 2006 JAGUAR X-TYPE. THIS INCIDENT HAS UPSET ME AND I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR, BUT I DON'T HAVE ANOTHER VEHICLE TO DRIVE. *TR

This vehicle is truly impressive. I was determined to find a luxury car that was unique, but none could compare to the style and performance of this one. If you recall the X-Type commercial where the snow plow follows in the Jaguar's tracks, I can sincerely guarantee that this car delivers the same level of handling. I am even more impressed with my new VDP Edition. The exterior styling turns heads and the interior is simply beautiful. A recent visit to the car wash reinforced the image of this car - even among the other top luxury cars, this car truly shines the brightest.
-
I've had a good experience so far, and I've received many compliments when others drive my car.

I'm so glad I decided to buy this car! Despite hearing some negative things about Jaguar quality, I fell in love with it after test driving it. I opted for the 3 L upgraded engine which has something like 250hp, making it very quick for its size. The handling is superb, the braking is great, and the interior is stylish. This car is an excellent value for the price! The only downside I've noticed is that the seat belt buckles are plastic. However, this car has had no problems at all and seems like the perfect mix of style, performance, and affordability. Another great thing about it is that it's owned by Ford and made in Britain. I prefer not to buy anything from the Germans due to their lack of support for the USA. Overall, I highly recommend this car!

Congratulations on your first Jaguar! I'm glad to hear that you had a great experience with the dealership and that you're enjoying the car. It sounds like you had a fantastic road trip from Oregon to Montana, and the 26 MPG is impressive! With almost 9000 miles on the car, it's great to hear that you haven't had any problems or issues. The all-wheel drive is a great feature, and I'm sure it makes driving in different conditions much easier. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

A great road eating machine! I'm surprised to hear about the bad reviews. The car is versatile, transforming from a boulevard cruiser for my wife to a true sports sedan with just a touch of the 'S' button and the help of VVT for me. The AWD is fantastic in both wet and dry conditions. I recently drove the car 226 miles in heavy rain, wind, and fog, and the AWD made the trip feel like it was a sunny day. The rear fog lights are three times brighter than regular tail lights, making me feel safer since I could be seen at a greater distance. The car is also very comfortable on long trips. I have had no problems since day one, everything has been perfect. The large 4-wheel dual-piston disk brakes with ABS stop the car on a dime. The cabin is beautifully designed with real wood and great leather seats. I absolutely love this car!

Hi there! While this car may be good looking, it seems like it had a few issues. The air bag sensor, windows, and emergency brake cable were all squeaky and it took four trips to the service center to get everything fixed. But don't worry, everything is all good now!
Erwin Marvin 2024-06-19
I used to own an S-Type, but when I drove an X-Type as a loaner, I realized that I needed a car that could perform well in bad weather. So, I decided to prioritize that over amenities and downsized. Although I miss some features like automatic seat adjustment and a softer ride, I really enjoy the confidence and handling of my VDL. What makes me loyal to my current dealer is their excellent service and performance. If the S-Type had better bad weather driving capability, I would consider returning to that vehicle. Alternatively, if the X-Type could be upgraded, I would be a happy and contented driver.

The good news is that this car is absolutely stunning and looks amazing! Although I got it for a low price, I have had to put in more than double what I paid for it into repairs. Unfortunately, I had some very expensive problems with the cooling system and the rear axle. Additionally, the car gets terrible mileage and is expensive to fill due to its large tank. I was disappointed to find out that the leather seats were actually pleather, not real leather. Overall, I have had a Jaguar before, but I don't think I'll be getting another one.

The vehicle looks great and has a great name, but it doesn't drive as well as it looks. I really like the stylish interior and exterior. However, reliability is somewhat of an issue.
