Jaguar X-type problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar X-Type is a car built by British marque Jaguar from 2001 to 2009. Considered a large family car in Europe and a compact car in the US, the X-Type has either a four-door saloon or a five-door estate body style and was sold in the compact-executive market segment. Given the internal designation X400, its engine is in the front and there are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. In addition to offering Jaguar's first estate car in series production, the X-Type would ultimately introduce its first diesel engine, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive configuration.

The X-Type was developed during the period when Jaguar was owned by Ford as a division of its Premier Automotive Group (PAG) (1999-2009) — and marked Jaguar's entry into the critical compact executive segment. The programme aimed to double the marque's worldwide sales — requiring expansion of engineering resources, factory capacity, marketing capability, sales support and service. At launch, Autocar called the X-Type "the most important Jaguar ever".

With annual projections of 100,000 sales, the X-Type recorded a production of 350,000 over its eight-year manufacturing run.

Common Jaguar X-type problems

The Jaguar X-Type, produced between 2001 and 2009, has been known to have various common problems that potential buyers should be aware of before purchasing a used model.

  • Sensor Problem: A number of X-types built between February and March 2004 had sensor issues, particularly with the yaw-rate sensor, which has been known to internally delaminate. This can result in uneven and unexpected application of the brakes.
  • Brake Problem: Some cars built between January and February 2004 could have problems with their brakes, particularly those with manual transmission. If parked on an incline with the handbrake on and the vehicle out of gear, the car could roll away due to brake components shrinking as they cool.
  • Short Circuit Problem: Some models built between August 2003 and August 2004 had insufficient clearance between the battery's positive cable and the number one cylinder fuel injector. This can cause the cable to chafe on the injector nut and result in a short circuit.
  • Cruise Control Problem: A number of X-types built between May 2005 and January 2010 had cruise control problems. It's possible that the cruise control might not disengage if certain faults occur with the engine management system.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a common issue in the Jaguar X-Type. The transmission can fail due to various factors, including low transmission fluid levels, faulty solenoids, or a worn-out torque converter. A malfunctioning valve body can also cause hard shifts and transmission slips.
  • Engine Oil Pan Gasket May Leak: The engine oil pan gasket may leak, causing oil to leak from the vehicle. This can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Persistent Coolant Loss Due to Small Leak at Coolant Reservoir: Some X-Type models may experience persistent coolant loss due to a small leak at the coolant reservoir. This can cause overheating problems and lead to severe engine damage if left unchecked.
  • Broken Lines Carrying Hot Coolant to the Radiator: Broken lines carrying hot coolant to the radiator can also cause overheating problems. These lines are prone to cracking due to their location near the engine, and when they fail, coolant can leak out, leading to overheating.
  • Air Conditioning Failure: Early cars tended to suffer from air conditioning failure, particularly in the drivetrain, especially the optional automatic gearbox and the transfer box for the four-wheel-drive system.
  • Drivetrain Problems: The biggest failure point is the drivetrain, especially the optional automatic gearbox and the transfer box for the four-wheel-drive system. A 'clunking' gearbox or one that doesn’t allow the car to accelerate smoothly will need replacement.
  • Radius Arm on the Rear Suspension: A howling or hooting noise from under the car is a warning that the transfer box for the four-wheel-drive system has failed and will need replacing. The suspension is also sensitive to alignment issues, and can chew through tyres if it’s not kept in line.
  • Door Latch Failure: Door latches have a habit of failing and need replacing, and likewise the remote central locking key fob can lose its connection to the car and has to be reprogrammed.
  • Chrome Trim on the Rear Windows: If the chrome trim on the rear windows is loose, it means that both the trim and the glass will need to be replaced.
  • Brake Pedal Staying Down (Diesel Models): When you push the brake pedal down, it does not return to its normal position. This is down to a faulty internal spring in the brake servo unit, particularly common in diesel models.
  • Engine Stalling (2.0-ltr Models): The engine is stalling, and you see the error codes P1211 and P0251 on your diagnostics screen. This is due to a faulty high-pressure fuel pump which needs to be replaced.
  • Engine Rumbling: A low rumbling sound coming from the engine when you drive can be caused by a problem with your bottom crank pulley damper assembly.
  • Indicator Light Malfunction: The external indicator is no longer working, but the interior indicator light is still flashing. This is a known issue with faulty indicators, particularly in X-types built between January 2001, and October 2002.
  • Wobbling on Corners: The car wobbles when you are taking a corner and no longer feels precise or stable on a straight. This is due to a damaged radius arm on the rear suspension, which needs to be replaced.
  • Loose Front Seats: The X-Type's front seats are extremely prone to wear and tear, and they can easily work loose from their runners. You may be able to order some replacement runners from us, but in some cases, you will need to replace the entire seat if damage has been caused.
  • Heavy Clutch: The clutch is getting heavier to apply. This happens to every car eventually, but the X-Type is known to be hard on its clutch system. A heavy clutch is a sign that your entire clutch system is going to need replacing, which you need to do before it fails completely and causes additional damage to the car.
  • Handbrake Problems (Manuals): When parking on an incline, the handbrake doesn't work, and the car rolls away. This is due to a problem with the handbrake system, particularly in manual models.

These common problems with the Jaguar X-Type can help potential buyers make informed decisions when purchasing a used model. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring a safer and more reliable driving experience.

Jaguar X-type

Why are Jaguar X types so cheap?

Jaguar had high hopes that the X-Type model would make the brand much more popular, but it did not sell as well as they expected. As a result, used X-Types are now very reasonably priced, even though they still drive nicely and have a unique look.

Is the Jaguar X-Type a good car?

The Jaguar X-Type is a good used buy - but beware of poor build quality. The X-Type was supposed to make Jaguar a big player, but it never sold in the volumes hoped for. The result is a car that's now a very reasonable second-hand buy, even though it's still good to drive and looks distinctive.

Why did the Jaguar X-Type fail?

That was the case for decades well before the X-Type ever came along, but they kept selling cars. No, the problem with the X-Type was that the badge engineering was just too obvious. You were clearly being sold a much cheaper car with a few gimmicks to justify the bigger price tag.

How many miles can a Jaguar X-Type last?

Most Jaguar vehicles will last for at least 150,000 miles, but there's a lot that a driver can do to push this number much higher. With regular oil replacement, belt changes, spark plug replacement, and other basic maintenance services, you can ensure that your Jaguar lasts for 200,000 miles or more.

The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 61,000.
Jaguar X-type 2007
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: SAJWA44B775
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On at least 3 occasions, my vehicle had unintended acceleration and applying brakes did not stop the car. I put it in park to stop. I took it to the Foreign performance (mechanic shop) on 11-29-23 after the first time and they said they fixed it. It occurred again on 12-8-23. I again threw it into park. I called the shop on 12-11-23 and they agreed to see it on 12-12-23. I hit a car on 12-11-23 around 11:45 am coming out of my driveway. I had my car towed to mechanic. The other car did not need to be towed. On 12-20-23, Foreign Performance wrote: "Vehicle is driving normally at this time. Checked for any set faults, none stored. Tested the function of the accelerator pedal and the throttle body. Both function normally. There are no bulletin issues by the manufacturer for this problem related to this vehicle. Called the dealership to ask what they are doing to fix this problem with uncontrolled acceleration. They claim to never heard of such a problem and that they no longer work on these vehicles. The problem is well documented nationally and has existed since the vehicle was first produced. Bottom line is that the manufacturer and dealerships have washed their hands on the vehicle. The only advise to give would be to replace the accelerator pedal assembly, the throttle body and the engine control module all together and then program the engine control module to the highest level that is available. Vehicle should not be driven by the customer." Foreign Performance said they would not guarantee my vehicle would never do this again after their recommended repairs of $4027.91. It was Christmas, I was leaving on a planned vacation for two weeks and it was complicated so the vehicle is still at Foreign Performance and no work has been done so all components are available for inspection. No warning lights. Police and State Farm insurance have been involved. Needs body work as well after MVA--estimate of $1100 per state farm.

  • Summary: IN THE JUST OVER 3 YEARS THAT I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR I HAVE HAD 2 INCIDENTS WHERE THE CAR ACCELERATES AND ENGINE RACES WHEN BRAKING AT A LOW SPEED MAKING A TURN ON A SIDE STREET. I TRY TO BRING THE TO A STOP BUT IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DO AS THE BRAKES ARE NOT FULLY STOPPING THE CAR AND BOTH TIMES I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK QUICKLY IN OTHER TO COMPLETELY STOP IT WHICH BROUGHT IT TO A JERKING HALT. THERE IS SOME DEFECT IN THIS MODEL AS I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS SIMILAR STORIES ON A JAGUAR PROBLEMS WEBSITE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM AND I WAS LUCKY BOTH TIMES TO BE ON SIDE STREETS AS A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED AS I IT TOOK ME A FEW SECONDS TO BRING THE CAR TO A STOP AS I DID NOT HAVE FULL CONTROL OF CAR. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL JAGUAR IN GLEN COVE NY IN JULY AND THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE INCIDENT AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. LIKE I SAID AT THE BEGINNING THIS ONLY HAPPENED TWICE IN 3 YEARS BUT I ONLY DRIVE 1000 TO 2000 MILES A YEAR AND TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR TOO MUCH AS I MIGHT HIT ANOTHER CAR OR A PERSON IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. THE 2004 JAGUAR X TYPES SHOULD BE RECALLED AS OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH NO SOLUTIONS.

Latest negative Jaguar X-type car reviews

  1. Jason Schaden 2024-11-27

    Vehicle year: 2003

I purchased my Jag with 12,000 miles on it and the dealer kindly gave us two new tires. However, at 22,000 miles, I had to replace all four tires despite following the proper rotation schedule. Additionally, I needed to replace the brakes every 30,000 miles. Although the car was garage kept, it always struggled in cold weather. I had to make major hose repairs at 30,000 miles and replace the battery at 60,000 miles. While the key fob still unlocks up close, I had to replace the driver door lock system and the driver's door panel fell off twice due to broken clips. I also had to constantly repair the passenger side defroster vent to prevent it from rattling. Unfortunately, I found rust starting on the hood almost a year after the rust warranty had ended. Currently, the engine light is on again and I am trading it this week. Despite all of these issues, I kept the car because I did not have any payments.

  2. Camryn Marks 2024-11-12

I used to own an S-Type, but when I drove an X-Type as a loaner, I realized that I needed a car that could perform well in bad weather. So, I decided to prioritize that over amenities and downsized. Although I miss some features like automatic seat adjustment and a softer ride, I really enjoy the confidence and handling of my VDL. What makes me loyal to my current dealer is their excellent service and performance. If the S-Type had better bad weather driving capability, I would consider returning to that vehicle. Alternatively, if the X-Type could be upgraded, I would be a happy and contented driver.

I purchased the 2.5 X-Type for my wife back in 2008. It was a one-owner car and appeared to be very well taken care of, with tons of dealer receipts and only 45K miles on the odometer. However, like any beautiful wife or girlfriend, it had its issues - you just can't have it all! Over the years, I have had to perform regular maintenance, which wasn't too bad since I take care of all my cars. But then came the O2 sensors, Bank 1 Bank 2, the lower catalytic converter, the vacuum system, and the valve cover leaking. At this point, we had gotten a lot of use out of it, with 160,000 miles on it. Currently, I have a check engine light (flashing), an e-brake light on, and an ABS light on. The car drives fine, but it won't go over 3K RPM. The forums suggest a myriad of things to fix this, but they are quite expensive and not worth the cost of the car. I'll drive it until it falls apart, I guess. Overall, it was a reliable car for 10 years of its life, from 2003 to 2013. Unfortunately, it died in the early months of 2020 due to so many issues. When we connected it to the code reader, there were just pages of error codes - 8 to 10 codes per page. My wife didn't want to let it go, but honestly, it was a liability driving it. Rest in peace, Jag.

Despite the issues I have experienced with my x-type, I am confident in the expertise of the mechanics at the shop to diagnose and fix the problems. The whistle in the drive shaft was addressed, and although it returned, I trust that the new transmission will resolve the issue. Additionally, I have brought to the attention of the manufacturer the design flaw in the gas tank door, and I am confident that they will take the necessary steps to address it. While the ride may not be as smooth as I had hoped, I am still satisfied with my investment in this vehicle.

In my opinion, while the X-type has some of the Jaguar styling cues, it lacks the soul and character that BMW, Audi, and now Acura do so well in building into their cars. Although it rides well, handles competently, and has adequate zip, it doesn't exude the driving excitement that the aforementioned class leaders have. However, if you're looking for a more subdued experience, the X-type might be right up your alley.

This has been a truly outstanding vehicle. We have driven 22000 miles without a single problem other than the tires wearing out very prematurely. The service we received has been outstanding. It's also fantastic in the snow!

Hi there! I noticed that you had a JAG XJ8 as your first car. I was really interested in getting an S-Model myself, but I wasn't a fan of the grill. I think the interior of the X-type is just as nice as the S-type, except for the steering wheel. I actually ordered the wood grain finished one from the dealer. The only downside I found was that the rear seating leg area is a bit short. Overall, I think the car is amazing!

I just replaced my 03 X Type 2.5 with an 06 3 Liter X. The new car has far better acceleration and handling. As part of the sunroof package, you get 17-inch wheels and wider tires. I also noticed that Jaguar has made a number of subtle improvements since 03. The brakes are better with no dust problem, the center console is of higher quality, a second cupholder has been added, and the seats have been improved. Another plus is the availability of Jaguar's extended warranty for a reasonable price. I opted for the 7-year - 100K because this car is a keeper.

Thank you Jaguar. We traded in a Mercedes Benz for the new wagon. It's been a blast to drive and a real sport wagon. Both my wife and I have been enjoying driving the car. The new design really caught our eye and we just had to have one. We get lots of comments on the street about it and lots and lots of smiles. Again, thank you Jaguar!
