2004 Jaguar X-type problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar X-Type is a car built by British marque Jaguar from 2001 to 2009. Considered a large family car in Europe and a compact car in the US, the X-Type has either a four-door saloon or a five-door estate body style and was sold in the compact-executive market segment. Given the internal designation X400, its engine is in the front and there are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. In addition to offering Jaguar's first estate car in series production, the X-Type would ultimately introduce its first diesel engine, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive configuration.

The X-Type was developed during the period when Jaguar was owned by Ford as a division of its Premier Automotive Group (PAG) (1999-2009) — and marked Jaguar's entry into the critical compact executive segment. The programme aimed to double the marque's worldwide sales — requiring expansion of engineering resources, factory capacity, marketing capability, sales support and service. At launch, Autocar called the X-Type "the most important Jaguar ever".

With annual projections of 100,000 sales, the X-Type recorded a production of 350,000 over its eight-year manufacturing run.

Common 2004 Jaguar X-type problems

The Jaguar X-Type, produced from 2001 to 2009, is known for several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues, based on the search results:

  • Engine Problems: The Jaguar X-Type has had its fair share of reported engine problems, but these can vary widely in severity and frequency. Some of these issues include coolant leaks and problems with the water pump, oil leaks attributed to faulty valve cover gaskets or oil pan gaskets, ignition coil failure leading to misfires, issues with the timing chain tensioner that can cause noise, poor performance, or even engine damage, failures in the thermostat that can lead to overheating issues, and problems with the fuel pump that can lead to poor engine performance.
  • Clutch and Gearbox Issues: Some X-Type drivers have complained about the clutch, which can cause problems with changing gears, such as being too slow or rough, slipping out of gear, juddering, or shivering. These could be due to low or dirty gearbox oil, faulty solenoids, sensors, valves, or internal wear and tear.
  • Problems with the chrome trim: Problems have beset the chrome trim. Owners complain about the trim on the exterior window seals bubbling and peeling off, especially on older models. They also say the trim on the rear quarter glass can become loose and fall off, allowing dirt and water to enter the vehicle and causing even more problems. The trim can also become cloudy and dull because of salt and dirt exposure while on the road.
  • Problems with the brakes and handbrakes: Some Jaguar X-Type owners have mentioned that the brake pads and discs wear down faster than expected, so they must be replaced sooner than with other cars. Others have experienced occasional issues with the handbrake not working correctly on an incline or problems engaging and corroded or lack of lubrication can also result in seized brake callipers, which can affect braking performance and cause damage to the brake discs and pads.
  • Door latch problems: Owners of the Jaguar X-Type commonly report door latch issues, including the door sensor breaking or failing, which can make the car think that the door is always open, even when it isn’t. This glitch can impact the central locking system, alarm, interior lights, and even the car battery. Problems with door wiring, such as damage, breakage, or corrosion, can also disrupt signals between the door and the car, resulting in electrical faults and errors.
  • Issues with the indicators: Some of the indicator problems that UK owners report with the Jaguar X-type include that the external indicator can break. However, the interior light will continue to flash for the driver, so they don’t realize that other drivers can’t see they are indicating. This breaks UK law. Other drivers report that the indicator bulbs stop working or become dim because they are old, worn out or corroded, while a few report that the indicator stalk, or lever, stops working or breaks because of faulty wiring or connectors.
  • Sensor Issues: A number of X-types built between February and March 2004 had sensor issues. The yaw-rate sensor has been known to internally delaminate, which could result in uneven and unexpected application of the brakes.
  • Brake Problem: Some cars built between January and February 2004 could have problems with their brakes. Vehicles with manual transmission, that are parked on an incline with the handbrake on and vehicle out of gear, could roll away due to brake components shrinking as they cool.
  • Short Circuit Problem: Some models built between August 2003 and August 2004 had insufficient clearance between the battery's positive cable and the number one cylinder fuel injector. This could cause the cable to chafe on the injector nut and result in a short circuit.
  • Cruise Control Problem: A number of X-types built between May 2005 and January 2010 had cruise control problems. It's possible that the cruise control might not disengage if certain faults occur with the engine management system.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Jaguar X-Type owners. It's important to note that not all X-Types will experience these issues, and many can provide years of faultless service if they're cared for properly. However, potential buyers should be aware of these potential problems and consider them when deciding whether to purchase an X-Type.

  • VIN: SAJEA71C94S
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH LEAKING BRAKE FLUID AND A FRIEND WITH THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL CAR TOLD ME ABOUT A RECALL ON THEIR CAR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM . THIS PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY PADDING INSTALLED FOR SOUND PROOFING ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHICH TRAPS DIRT AND MOISTURE AND CAUSES THE BRAKE LINES TO PREMATURELY RUST WHICH I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH. AFTER HAVING THE PANELS REMOVED FOR INSPECTION IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE PADS ARE INSTALL ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE AND THE RUST ISSUE IS PRESENT AS WELL . WHEN I ENTERED MY VIN NUMBER INTO YOUR SYSTEM IT'S TELLING ME THERE ARE NO OPEN OR IN REPAIRED RECALLED ON MY CAR HOW COULD THAT BE?

  • VIN: SAJEA51C44W
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: IN THE JUST OVER 3 YEARS THAT I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR I HAVE HAD 2 INCIDENTS WHERE THE CAR ACCELERATES AND ENGINE RACES WHEN BRAKING AT A LOW SPEED MAKING A TURN ON A SIDE STREET. I TRY TO BRING THE TO A STOP BUT IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DO AS THE BRAKES ARE NOT FULLY STOPPING THE CAR AND BOTH TIMES I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK QUICKLY IN OTHER TO COMPLETELY STOP IT WHICH BROUGHT IT TO A JERKING HALT. THERE IS SOME DEFECT IN THIS MODEL AS I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS SIMILAR STORIES ON A JAGUAR PROBLEMS WEBSITE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM AND I WAS LUCKY BOTH TIMES TO BE ON SIDE STREETS AS A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED AS I IT TOOK ME A FEW SECONDS TO BRING THE CAR TO A STOP AS I DID NOT HAVE FULL CONTROL OF CAR. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL JAGUAR IN GLEN COVE NY IN JULY AND THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE INCIDENT AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. LIKE I SAID AT THE BEGINNING THIS ONLY HAPPENED TWICE IN 3 YEARS BUT I ONLY DRIVE 1000 TO 2000 MILES A YEAR AND TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR TOO MUCH AS I MIGHT HIT ANOTHER CAR OR A PERSON IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. THE 2004 JAGUAR X TYPES SHOULD BE RECALLED AS OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH NO SOLUTIONS.

THIS VEHICLE DRIVES LESS THAN 3000 MILES A YEAR NOW AND I'M SUPER DISAPPOINTED IN THIS FACTOR WHERE AS MY WIFE'S MERCEDES S500 WITH 139,000 MILES ON IT HAS NO ISSUES ON IT AT ALL.

Negative 2004 Jaguar X-type car reviews

  1. Johnathon Willms 2024-07-23

I recently purchased a 2002 X-type 3.0 and while I love driving it, I have had some issues with maintenance. The car was delivered with a mix of Continental and Pirelli tires, which may have been a sign of things to come. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the transmission seal four times, the transmission itself, the master computer, and the cooling system main valve (which required a tow). Additionally, I have had to replace the brake pads and the trunk latch is intermittent. Despite speaking with Jaguar multiple times, I have not received any helpful assistance. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing this car.

  2. Wellington Rowe 2024-06-07

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Jaguar. Although I've only driven it for 35,000 miles, I've had some issues with it, including a whining noise that my dealer says will require $2,000 in repairs. While I've spent over $2,500 on repairs already, I'm still hopeful that my Jaguar will be back to its best soon. I understand that you may have had a different experience, but I believe that every car has its own unique quirks. Thanks for listening!

  3. Vito Monahan 2024-02-18

I am extremely dissatisfied with this car. It has had numerous problems, and I dread even getting behind the wheel. The transmission failed at a mere 9,000 miles, and the car has been in the shop at least seven times in the past year. Fortunately, they offer a complimentary loaner car. Despite having every color and model in my driveway, they all seem to drive like my old Ford Tempo. It's a shame because they are visually appealing cars. However, when this lease is up, I will be returning to Acura.

  4. Gavin Reilly 2024-02-15

The car my husband bought for my 40th birthday has been a complete disaster. Despite having the engine replaced, it still experiences the same issues of a grinding noise in the right front and vibrations at around 35 mph. The interior is also falling apart, with the lining around the windows peeling off, broken visor mirrors, broken back seat belts, and a faulty electrical side mirror adjustment switch. Overall, this car has been a terrible purchase.

  5. Isac Huel 2024-01-27

I bought this car as a pre-owned model when it was around 5-6 years old. The car looks amazing and has great aesthetics. However, over the years, I have found that it requires frequent repairs despite being a technically a Jaguar. I recently had to rebuild the transmission and replace the hoses due to a leak. Now, the engine light is on and I need to replace the drive belt, fix an oil leak, and do some regular maintenance like brakes, rotors, and tires. Although the car has only 78,880 miles on it, it feels like it has required more than its fair share of repairs. While I wish I could afford a new car, it's not an option right now. If I had known about the frequent repairs, I would not have purchased this car. I believe this car was manufactured by Ford, which may explain the high cost of parts. Despite my frustrations, I am hopeful that the car will be back on the road soon.

Positive 2004 Jaguar X-type car reviews

  1. Bryce Murphy 2025-01-03

Congratulations on your new purchase! Your 2004 Jaguar X Type 3.0 with sport package sounds like an amazing car. It's great to hear that you're enjoying the ride and the car's features, such as the heated seats and comfortable seating. It's also wonderful to hear that the car has been dependable for you. While insurance and plates may be a bit expensive, it's clear that the car is worth it. The sleek look of the car definitely turns heads and it's great to see that you're getting good pick up power. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Berta Schuster 2024-11-25

This has been a truly outstanding vehicle. We have driven 22000 miles without a single problem other than the tires wearing out very prematurely. The service we received has been outstanding. It's also fantastic in the snow!

  3. Ned Bahringer 2024-11-16

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your X-type 3.0! Although it's still early days, I hope that you continue to have a great experience with it. I must say, the dealership experience sounds like it was fantastic! While the AWD may hamper acceleration slightly, the car still has good power. It's great to hear that you're happy with the interior - it certainly looks and feels luxurious compared to other cars in its class. I would definitely recommend taking a closer look at this car!

  4. Lambert Lang 2024-11-14

I love this little Jaguar! It's hard to find anything to complain about. The engine has great power and the all-wheel drive makes it handle like a dream. It's packed with every feature you could reasonably need in a car. Plus, it has its own unique personality that sets it apart from other cars. I especially appreciate the wood shift knob and the lack of a button to push down to get the shift out of park. The hand brake between the seats is a nice touch too. I did come across a review that mentioned the engine lacking torque, but with a 0 to 60 time of 7 seconds and a top speed of nearly 140 miles an hour, I can't imagine the engine being weak at all!

I came across a review on Edmunds while searching for schematics of the front diff. (pumpkin). The review was written by a lady who was completely dissatisfied with her x-type. However, I must say that my experience with the same car model has been exceptional. My wife and I purchased an '04 model with 40,000 miles and have only had to deal with normal wear and tear, such as rear brakes. It's unfortunate that this lady had such a negative experience, but perhaps she received a car that was not up to par. The Jaguar x-type was designed by Ford to be a luxury car that is affordable to the middle class. Although I am a GM fan, I must admit that this car has won me over.
