2005 Jaguar X-type problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar X-Type is a car built by British marque Jaguar from 2001 to 2009. Considered a large family car in Europe and a compact car in the US, the X-Type has either a four-door saloon or a five-door estate body style and was sold in the compact-executive market segment. Given the internal designation X400, its engine is in the front and there are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. In addition to offering Jaguar's first estate car in series production, the X-Type would ultimately introduce its first diesel engine, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive configuration.

The X-Type was developed during the period when Jaguar was owned by Ford as a division of its Premier Automotive Group (PAG) (1999-2009) — and marked Jaguar's entry into the critical compact executive segment. The programme aimed to double the marque's worldwide sales — requiring expansion of engineering resources, factory capacity, marketing capability, sales support and service. At launch, Autocar called the X-Type "the most important Jaguar ever".

With annual projections of 100,000 sales, the X-Type recorded a production of 350,000 over its eight-year manufacturing run.

Common 2005 Jaguar X-type problems

The Jaguar X-Type, produced from 2001 to 2009, was Jaguar's best-selling entry-level luxury sedan. It shared a platform with the Ford Mondeo but aimed to bring Jaguar styling and brand cachet to a smaller, more affordable package for buyers. Despite its popularity, the Jaguar X-Type has faced several common problems that have affected its reliability and performance.

Suspension issues are a common problem in the Jaguar X-Type, with some owners reporting premature wear and problems with various components of the suspension system, including bushings, control arms, and other parts. These issues can lead to a rough ride, uneven tire wear, or handling problems.

Engine problems are also prevalent in the X-Type, with some models experiencing coolant leaks and problems with the water pump, oil leaks attributed to faulty valve cover gaskets or oil pan gaskets, ignition coil failure leading to misfires, timing chain tensioner issues causing noise, poor performance, or even engine damage, thermostat failures leading to overheating issues, and problems with the fuel pump leading to poor engine performance.

Clutch and gearbox issues have also been reported, with some drivers experiencing slow or rough gear changes, slipping out of gear, juddering, or shivering. These problems could be due to low or dirty gearbox oil, faulty solenoids, sensors, valves, or internal wear and tear.

Problems with the chrome trim have also affected the X-Type, with owners reporting bubbling and peeling off of the trim on the exterior window seals, especially on older models. The trim on the rear quarter glass can also become loose and fall off, allowing dirt and water to enter the vehicle and causing even more problems.

Problems with the brakes and handbrakes have also been reported, with some Jaguar X-Type owners experiencing faster-than-expected brake pad and disc wear, seized brake callipers due to corrosion or lack of lubrication, and door latch issues, including the door sensor breaking or failing, causing the car to think that the door is always open, even when it isn't.

Indicator problems have also affected the X-Type, with some UK owners reporting that the external indicator can break, but the interior light will continue to flash, breaking UK law. Additionally, indicator bulbs can stop working or become dim due to old age, wear, or corrosion, and the indicator stalk or lever can stop working or break due to faulty wiring or connectors.

In summary, the Jaguar X-Type has faced several common problems that have affected its reliability and performance, including suspension issues, engine problems, clutch and gearbox issues, problems with the chrome trim, problems with the brakes and handbrakes, and indicator problems. While these issues can be frustrating for owners, they are not uncommon in luxury vehicles and can often be addressed with proper maintenance and repairs.

Why are Jaguar X types so cheap?

Jaguar had high hopes that the X-Type model would make the brand much more popular, but it did not sell as well as they expected. As a result, used X-Types are now very reasonably priced, even though they still drive nicely and have a unique look.

What problems did the Jaguar X-Type have in 2004?

A number of X-types built between February and March 2004 had sensor issues. The yaw-rate sensor has been known to internally delaminate, which could result in uneven and unexpected application of the brakes. Some cars built between January and February 2004 could have problems with their brakes.

How many miles can a Jaguar X-Type last?

Most Jaguar vehicles will last for at least 150,000 miles, but there's a lot that a driver can do to push this number much higher. With regular oil replacement, belt changes, spark plug replacement, and other basic maintenance services, you can ensure that your Jaguar lasts for 200,000 miles or more.

What is the rear suspension problem with the Jaguar X-Type?

Suspension. Suspension on both Jaguar X-type and Jaguar XF models has been known to succumb to wear and tear over time. The rear suspension in particular is subject to decay. The problem is first identifiable from a knocking noise if the car is driven over speed bumps and/or rough surfaces.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-04-21
  • VIN: SAJWA51C75W
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: HEADLIGHT ADJUSTERS BROKEN. THIS CAUSES THE HEADLIGHTS TO POINT DOWNWARD AT THE ROAD AND REDUCED VISIBILITY FOR NIGHT DRIVING. IT WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE LINES ON THE ROAD AND OPERATE THE VEHICLE. THE LOCAL JAGUAR DEALERSHIP ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THESE PLASTIC ADJUSTERS ARE PRONE TO BREAKING IF ADJUSTED AND REFUSED TO WORK ON THE LIGHTS OR PROVIDE A VIABLE SOLUTION. THEIR FIRST CLAIM WAS THAT THESE LIGHTS COULD NOT BE ADJUSTED AND SENT ME AWAY TWICE WITHOUT SERVICING THE VEHICLE. THEIR SOLUTION WAS TO TELL ME TO SEARCH THE INTERNET. UPON SEARCHING THE INTERNET IT WAS CLEAR THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH OTHER DRIVERS AS WELL. THE SAFETY CONCERN IS THAT THIS IS EXTREMELY BRITTLE PLASTIC THAT HOLDS/ADJUSTS THE LIGHTS AND IF BROKEN DO NOT ALLOW FOR SAFE DRIVING.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-21
  • VIN: SAJWA51A35W
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: MY VEHICLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AS NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10766521 FILED 9/21/2015. THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ANGLED TOO LOW AND THE MECHANIC SAYS THAT A PLASTIC PIECE IS BROKEN AND THE ENTIRE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I KEEP THE FOG LIGHTS ON TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LIMITED VIEW OF THE LOW BEAMS. I ALSO USE THE HIGH BEAMS AT NIGHT WHENEVER I CAN. THE HEADLIGHTS NOT PROPERLY ILLUMINATING THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-01-08
  • VIN: SAJWA51A35W
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: DRIVING AT NIGHT I NOTICED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS LOOK OUT OF ALIGNMENT. THE RIGHT LIGHT WAS ABOUT NORMAL, BUT THE LEFT LIGHT WAS AIMED DOWN AND TO THE LEFT OF THE ROAD AHEAD. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO SEE THE HIGHWAY. I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW. IT'S NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OR HIT ON THE FRONT END. IT'S A LONG WAY TO A DEALER, SO I WENT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THAT THERE IS A PLASTIC PART BROKEN ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE LIGHTS. REPLACEMENT COST FOR PARTS (HAVE TO BUY THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY) AND LABOR (BUMPER HAS TO BE REMOVED TO GET TO THE LIGHT ASSEMBLY) WAS ALMOST $1500. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM SINCE I BELIEVE ITS A DEFECT. IT'S ALSO STRANGE THAT THE NC INSPECTION DOES NOT INCLUDE HEADLIGHT ALIGNMENT. IF IT LIGHTS, IT PASSES. DID NOT GET IT FIXED, WE JUST DON'T DRIVE IT AT NIGHT.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-05-21
  • VIN: SAJWA51C35W
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I WILL START BY SAYING THAT I LOVE MY JAGUAR. IT IS THE BEST CAR I HAVE EVER HAD, WITH ONE EXCEPTION. THIS IS NOW THE FIFTH INCIDENT OF CRACKING RIMS (SIZE 7.5X180 ET52.5) ON MY 2005 JAGUAR X-TYPE (EQUIPPED WITH THE SPORT PREMIUM PACKAGE). I WENT OUT TO PUT THE GARBAGE OUT ON SUNDAY, 20MAY12, WHEN I NOTICED THE FRONT DRIVER'S TIRE WAS LOW. I CHECKED THE PRESSURE, AND THE GUAGE SHOWED 0. THAT NIGHT I PUT IN 40 PSI OF AIR. THE FOLLOWING DAY I CHECKED IT AGAIN, AND THE GUAGE SHOWED 20 PSI. IT IS IMPORTANT TO STATE THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN USED SINCE 19MAY12 TO THAT POINT. I JACKED UP THE CAR, AND PULLED THE WHEEL OFF THE CAR. AFTER SPRAYING WITH SOAPY WATER ON THE INSIDE RIM BY THE SIDEWALL, I FOUND IT WAS BUBBLING. I PUT THE SPARE ON THE CAR. LATER I SWITCHED THE SPARE SO IT COULD BE ON THE DRIVER'S REAR (SO IT WOULD NOT BE ON A WHEEL THET STEERS). ON A WHIM, I CHECKED THE WHEEL THAT WAS ON THE DRIVER'S REAR SIDE AND FOUND IT WAS CRACKED AS WELL. I SPRAYED SOAPY WATER AND FOUND IT WAS NOT BUBBLING. I CALLED THE LOCAL JAGUAR DEALER, WHO STATED THEY HAVE NOT HAD ISSUES WITH THEIR RIMS, AND NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THEM. I FIND THE CRACKING RIMS TO BE A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. MY WIFE AND I HAVE SPENT APPROXIMATELY $600 ON WHEEL REPAIRS. EVERY FACTORY ORIGINAL WHEEL ON THE CAR HAS BEEN CRACKED; SOME MORE THAN ONCE. WE HAVE ALSO SPENT A LOT OF MONEY ON NEW TIRES BECAUSE THE RIMS WERE CRACKED AND DESTROYED SOME OF THE TIRES' SIDEWALLS. THE MOST RECENT CRACKS WERE DOCUMMENTED VIA PHOTOS FROM MY IPHONE. I HAVE HEARD OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVING ISSUED WITH THEIR JAGUAR RIMS, YET I HAVE NOT SEEN A RECALL ON THIS ITEM. IT REALLY SHOULD BE. THIS IS THE CAR WE TAKE OUR FOUR-YEAR-OLD TO DAYCARE. WE ALSO USE THE CAR FOR FAMILY OUTTINGS AND SHOPPING. *TT

  • Summary: THE ZENON HEADLIGHTS FLICKER AND SOMETIMES GO OUT. RESTARTING THE CAR SOLVES THE PROBLEM BUT IT RECURS AFTER A FEW MINUTES. SEVERAL INSPECTIONS BY DEALER RESULTED IN NO REPAIR AS THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT MAKE THE PROBLEM OCCUR. JUST AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT BOTH HEADLIGHTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I PAID TO HAVE THE LIGHTS REPLACED SO THAT I COULD DRIVE THE CAR AT NIGHT AGAIN BUT NOW AFTER A YEAR THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING AGAIN. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-04-30
  • VIN: SAJWA79C25S
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: JUST GOOGLE "JAGUAR THROTTLE BODY" AND SEE HOW MANY PROBLEMS CUSTOMERS ARE HAVING. MY 2005 XJ8LWB WITH LESS THAN 60,000 MILES EXPERIENCED A THROTTLE BODY FAILURE WHILE TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE. I LOST POWER AS THE ENGINE WENT TO IDLE SPEED AND AN "ENGINE FAULT" MESSAGE ALERTED ME THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SHOULDER AND CREEP DOWN AN EXIT, WHERE I WAS ABLE TO FIND A SERVICE STATION. I TURNED THE ENGINE IGNITION OFF AND WAITED FOR 15 SECONDS AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE, THE FAULT MESSAGE WAS GONE AND THE ENGINE HAD POWER AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME WITHOUT ANOTHER INCIDENT. WE ALL WOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD IF AN 18 WHEELER WAS BEHIND US WHEN THE ENGINE LOST POWER. LAST FRIDAY, I HAD SEVERAL EPISODES WITH THE "ENGINE FAULT" AND LOSS OF POWER, BUT MADE IT TO A JAGUAR DEALERSHIP SAFELY, BUT SHAKEN. THEY PUT THE VEHICLE ON THE COMPUTER AND ANNOUNCED THE CODE THAT RELATES TO THE THROTTLE BODY AND FIGURED THE REPAIRS TO BE $1,100 AND THAT I COULD PICK UP THE CAR TODAY ON AUGUST 23, 2010. OVER THE WEEKEND I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND SAW THE VAST NUMBERS OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. SOME PEOPLE REPORTED ACCIDENTS. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. JAGUAR HAS RECALLED EARLIER MODELS WITH THROTTLE BODY PROBLEMS, BUT REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE THIS PROBLEM ON THE 2004 AND LATER MODELS AS OF TODAY. FROM MY DISCUSSIONS WITH JAGUAR USA IT DOES NOT APPEAR THAT THEY WILL OWN UP TO THE PROBLEM UNLESS FORCED TO. HOPEFULLY THIS WHERE THE NHTSA COMES IN. *TR

THE ENGINE BASICALLY SHUT DOWN, AND I HAD TO PULL ONTO THE SHOULDER, IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS AND FRANKLY, IT SCARED ME. ENGINE LIGHT ON, AS WELL AS "ENGINE SYSTEMS FAULT, PARKBRAKE FAULT, DSC NOT AVAILABLE" SHOWING UP ON THE DASH. I RESTARTED THE CAR ABOUT 4-5 TIMES AND IT EVENTUALLY STARTED. I AM ASSUMING, THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS AND NO-ONE SEEMS TO HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT IS CAUSING IT. IT HAPPENS ON BUSY HIGHWAYS AND LOCAL STREET DRIVING. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE CARS ENGINE COULD CUT OUT AT A MOMENTS NOTICE AND LEAVE YOU IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION! *TR

Negative 2005 Jaguar X-type car reviews

  1. Izaiah Kshlerin 2024-07-15

Hey there! Before you make a decision, I just wanted to share my experience with the X type. Unfortunately, I've had a pretty rough time with it over the past 3 months. The remotes don't seem to work, the gas tank is a bit tricky to open, and the windows have been giving me some trouble. On top of that, the plastic buttons on the inside have broken off. Just wanted to give you a heads up so you can make an informed decision. Let me know if you have any questions!

Positive 2005 Jaguar X-type car reviews

  1. Lukas Crona 2025-01-08

I am really enjoying my new Jaguar! I'm so glad they decided to build a wagon. It's really fun to drive and there's plenty of space in the back for anything from groceries to small furniture finds. My son thinks that a Jaguar should only be a luxury sports car, but what's wrong with a sporty wagon that's also pretty to look at?

  2. Adrian Volkman 2024-11-25

Hi there! I noticed that you had a JAG XJ8 as your first car. I was really interested in getting an S-Model myself, but I wasn't a fan of the grill. I think the interior of the X-type is just as nice as the S-type, except for the steering wheel. I actually ordered the wood grain finished one from the dealer. The only downside I found was that the rear seating leg area is a bit short. Overall, I think the car is amazing!

  3. Ahmed Mayert 2024-10-18

We traded in our S-Type with over 130,000 miles on it, which was difficult because we loved it so much. However, we needed an AWD wagon instead of an SUV. Even though we don't get as many admiring glances as we did with the S-Type, our new car is still comfortable, beautiful, classy, and great in the snow. It has plenty of power and most of the luxury features found in higher-priced cars. While the carpeting and sun visors are not of the highest quality, overall the car lives up to its image. My wife loves driving it and feels very secure doing so in adverse weather conditions.

Great value for entry-level luxury! It's fantastic that it has leather, AWD, a preppy engine, full maintenance, and the Jaguar name. It can't be beat! I'm glad to hear that you've had no problems in 8 months. It's great to see that Jaguar quality has gone totally up.

I love my car! It's so practical and stylish. I've never seen another one on the road, and I really hope they continue making them. With so many SUVs out there, it's refreshing to have a perfect alternative like this.
