Jaguar X-type 2002 problems
The Jaguar X-Type is a car built by British marque Jaguar from 2001 to 2009. Considered a large family car in Europe and a compact car in the US, the X-Type has either a four-door saloon or a five-door estate body style and was sold in the compact-executive market segment. Given the internal designation X400, its engine is in the front and there are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. In addition to offering Jaguar's first estate car in series production, the X-Type would ultimately introduce its first diesel engine, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive configuration.
The X-Type was developed during the period when Jaguar was owned by Ford as a division of its Premier Automotive Group (PAG) (1999-2009) — and marked Jaguar's entry into the critical compact executive segment. The programme aimed to double the marque's worldwide sales — requiring expansion of engineering resources, factory capacity, marketing capability, sales support and service. At launch, Autocar called the X-Type "the most important Jaguar ever".
With annual projections of 100,000 sales, the X-Type recorded a production of 350,000 over its eight-year manufacturing run.

Common Jaguar X-type 2002 problems
The Jaguar X-Type, produced from 2001 to 2009, is known for several common problems and issues that owners have reported. These problems span across various components of the vehicle, including suspension, engine, clutch and gearbox, chrome trim, brakes and handbrakes, door latches, indicators, and the automatic gearbox.
Suspension issues are prevalent in the Jaguar X-Type, with some owners reporting premature wear and problems with various components of the suspension system, such as bushings, control arms, and other parts. These issues can lead to symptoms like a rough ride, uneven tire wear, or handling problems.
Engine problems in the Jaguar X-Type are diverse and can include coolant leaks, oil leaks, ignition coil failure, thermostat failures, and problems with the fuel pump. Coolant leaks are often attributed to issues with the water pump, while oil leaks can be traced back to faulty valve cover gaskets or oil pan gaskets. Ignition coil failure can lead to misfires, and thermostat failures can cause overheating issues. Fuel pump problems can negatively impact engine performance.
Clutch and gearbox issues are also common in the Jaguar X-Type. Some drivers have complained about the clutch, which can cause problems with changing gears, such as being too slow or rough, slipping out of gear, juddering, or shivering. These issues could be due to low or dirty gearbox oil, faulty solenoids, sensors, valves, or internal wear and tear.
Problems with the chrome trim, particularly on the exterior window seals, have been reported by owners. The trim can bubble and peel off, especially on older models. The trim on the rear quarter glass can become loose and fall off, allowing dirt and water to enter the vehicle and causing even more problems. The trim can also become cloudy and dull due to exposure to salt and dirt while on the road.
Issues with the brakes and handbrakes have been reported by some Jaguar X-Type owners. Brake pads and discs can wear down faster than expected, requiring more frequent replacement. Corrosion or lack of lubrication can result in seized brake callipers, which can affect braking performance and cause damage to the brake discs and pads. Door latch problems are also common, with door sensors breaking or failing, causing the car to think that the door is always open, even when it isn't. This can impact the central locking system, alarm, interior lights, and even the car battery. Problems with door wiring, such as damage, breakage, or corrosion, can also disrupt signals between the door and the car, resulting in electrical faults and errors.
Indicator problems include issues with the external indicator breaking, causing it to be non-functional while the interior light continues to flash for the driver. This breaks UK law, as other drivers cannot see the indicator. Indicator bulbs can also stop working or become dim due to old age, wear, or corrosion. The indicator stalk or lever can also stop working or break due to faulty wiring or connectors.
The automatic gearbox on the X-Type is prone to problems, with symptoms such as delayed acceleration, surging forward, or clunking into gear. These issues could indicate a need for replacement gearbox.
In summary, the Jaguar X-Type has a range of recurrent issues that owners should be aware of, including suspension, engine, clutch and gearbox, chrome trim, brakes and handbrakes, door latches, indicators, and the automatic gearbox. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become more serious problems.
How reliable is the X-Type Jaguar?
As a result, used X-Types are now very reasonably priced, even though they still drive nicely and have a unique look. However, X-Types have a reputation for questionable reliability as they age. So if you're interested in an X-Type, try to find a later model year that fits your budget.
What problems did the Jaguar X-Type have in 2004?
A number of X-types built between February and March 2004 had sensor issues. The yaw-rate sensor has been known to internally delaminate, which could result in uneven and unexpected application of the brakes. Some cars built between January and February 2004 could have problems with their brakes.
How long do Jaguar X-Type last?
Most Jaguar vehicles will last for at least 150,000 miles, but there's a lot that a driver can do to push this number much higher. With regular oil replacement, belt changes, spark plug replacement, and other basic maintenance services, you can ensure that your Jaguar lasts for 200,000 miles or more.
What is the rear suspension problem with the Jaguar X-Type?
Suspension. Suspension on both Jaguar X-type and Jaguar XF models has been known to succumb to wear and tear over time. The rear suspension in particular is subject to decay. The problem is first identifiable from a knocking noise if the car is driven over speed bumps and/or rough surfaces.

- Summary: 1. THIS IS MY 3RD SUA. SEE 10320564 FOR 1ST 2. TRIP COMPONENTS: COUNTRY ROADS, A FERRY, CITY STREETS, AND FWY FOR APPROX. 40 MILES. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AFTER 10 MILES OF FWY AND DURING APPROX. 1.5 MILES OF CITY STREETS. 2. I TURNED ONTO A SEMI-STEEP ST. APPROACHING A MALL. THE 2ND LIGHT BEFORE THE MALL CHANGED AND I WAS GOING FAST ENOUGH TO DOWNSHIFT TO AID BRAKING. I WAS THE 3RD CAR FROM THE LIGHT IN THE LEFT LANE. I HAD SHIFTED TO DRIVE AFTER STOPPING, MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AS I WAITED. THE LIGHT CHANGED AND AS THE CAR AHEAD BEGAN TO MOVE AND WHEN THERE WAS ROOM, I MOVED MY FOOT FROM BRAKE TO THROTTLE. I THINK THAT I APPLIED SOME PRESSURE AFTER ENGINE AND SLOPE GOT IT MOVING. AS IT BEGAN ROLLING, I FELT WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A SHIFT. THE CAR BEGAN GOING FASTER AND FASTER BY ITSELF SO I MOVED MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. CAR DIDN'T WANT TO STOP SO I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND IT STOPPED [NO ENGINE ROAR DURING THIS AS IN PRIOR SUA'S.] AFTER STOPPING, THE ENGINE IDLED DOWN QUICKLY. BECAUSE OF TRAFFIC I DID NOT TAKE THE TIME TO KILL IGNITION. IT RAN OK SO I PROCEEDED TO RUN MY MALL ERRAND AND THEN TOOK IT TO JAGUAR. 3. THIS WAS A THURS. AND WE HAD A 2500 MI. TRIP SCHEDULED FOR THE FOLLOWING WED. ON MON. SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THERE WERE 2 XMISSION FAULTS THEY WERE INVESTIGATING, BUT THAT I MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET THE CAR TUES. I WENT IN EARLY AND WENT FOR A TEST DRIVE WITH A TECH WITH NO SUA. HE TALKED ABOUT THE XMISSION FAULTS AND SAID THAT 1 WAS A SENSOR AT THE GEAR SHIFT AND THE 2ND A SENSOR UP FORWARD WHICH MIGHT REFLECT A SHIFTING THAT CAUSED THE ENGINE TO THINK IT NEEDED GAS (I'M NOT TECHNICAL). MORE REVIEW WAS NEEDED SO WE HAD TO RENT A CAR FOR THE TRIP. THIS WK I WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE THERE WERE NO FAULTS [WAS 2], AND AFTER A REVIEW OF ALL THE DOCUMENTATION AND DATA FROM ALL 3 SUA'S WHICH WERE ALL UNVERIFIED [WAS 2], THAT THERE ARE "NO CONCERNS" AND THAT THE CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE. AND I WILL BE BILLED FOR $379 PLUS GAS. *TR

- VIN: SAJEA51CX2W
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: 1. VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ON A 30 MILE TRIP TO RUN ERRANDS. CRUISE CONTROL WAS USED DURING THE FIRST 2 SEGMENTS OF THE TRIP BUT NOT THEREAFTER. AFTER THREE OR FOUR ERRANDS AND DINNER WE PROCEEDED TO A SMALLER MALL WHERE THE ENGINE WAS STOPPED WITH IGNITION IN RADIO MODE WHILE THE WIFE WENT INTO A STORE FOR A FEW MINUTES. 2.AFTER SHE RETURNED I STARTED UP, BACKED OUT, AND PROCEEDED FORWARD APPROXIMATELY 75' TO A LEFT TURN ONTO THE MALL EXIT ROAD WITH APPROXIMATELY 100' LEFT TO THE STOP SIGN AT THE CROSSING STREET. I ACCELERATED FROM THE TURN AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE ROARED AND WE SHOT AHEAD. I JAMMED ON THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD, BUT WE KEPT ACCELERATING. I THEN SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND STOPPED WITH THE NOSE OF THE CAR JUST PAST THE STOP SIGN. THE ENGINE WAS STILL ROARING SO I TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. AT THAT POINT TWO CARS CROSSED IN FRONT OF US. THIS WAS THE SECOND INCIDENCE OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. THE FIRST, 100K MILES EARLIER WAS SIMILAR WITH THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BEING THAT THE CAR WAS PARALLEL PARKED AND IT TOOK OFF ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER I PUT IT IN DRIVE AND MY FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE. THERE WAS ENOUGH ROOM THAT I WAS ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY STOP IT AS ABOVE WITH NO ACCIDENT. 3. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE 1ST INCIDENT JAGUAR PERFORMED AN ECM REFLASH AS PER JAGUAR TECH LINE ADVISORY, CHECKED ALL CABLE LINKAGE AND THROTTLE BODY. AFTER THE CURRENT INCIDENT JAGUAR SCANNED FOR CODES, FOUND NONE FOR THE THROTTLE BODY, BUT FOUND 3 CODES FOR MISFIRES, 2 FOR TRANSMISSION, AND 3 FOR BRAKE SWITCH. THEY CLEARED CODES, DROVE CAR AND WERE UNABLE TO VERIFY CONCERN. THEY FURTHER WERE DIRECTED BY TECHLINE TO DO A VEHICLE SCAN, FLIGHT RECORDER DATA, AND VEHICLE SESSIONS. ALL THE DATA WAS SENT TO THE UK FOR INVESTIGATION. THIS PAST WEEKEND WHILE WAITING ON THE UK THEY DROVE IT SOME MORE. I WAS INFORMED VERBALLY YESTERDAY THAT WE COULD HAVE THE CAR BACK NEXT WEEK WHEN WE RETURNED FROM VACATION. THAT THE CAR WAS "SAFE" AND "GOOD TO GO." *TR

This car is so much fun to drive! I was pleasantly surprised by the 3.0L five-speed, which really takes off. The comfort is fantastic, and the sound quality is even better. The audio system is top-notch.
-
Used this vehicle in snow, rain, and dry conditions and it has performed beautifully in all! Great car for northerners who have to brave the winter wonderland. Beautiful vehicle, smooth ride and great interior.
-
I love this car! It's one of the best cars I've ever owned. Not only does it perform well in the snow, but it also looks great while driving. I always receive compliments on this car too!
-
Although I like the car's handling and looks, I have unfortunately experienced a lot of problems since the day of my purchase. At the 50,000 mile mark, a leak in the drive train caused oil to spread everywhere under the car and onto the exhaust system. The repair cost me $1000 and the rental car cost $250. Despite my frustration, I believe that Jaguar corporate could have been more understanding and helpful. I hope that they will take my feedback into consideration and work to improve their customer service in the future.
-
Jaguar, or Ford, whichever one suits or thrills you, produced a winner! While it may not be a BMW, it certainly has its own unique qualities that make it stand out. The interior is sleek and pleasing, with a conservative design that exudes elegance. While the rear seat room may be a bit cramped, it's important to remember that this is not a family vehicle or a taxi. The X Type handles curves with ease and holds the road well. Overall, it's a nice car that's definitely worth test driving. If you like it, don't let anyone else's opinion sway you.

I purchased a new X-Type in January 2002. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car, including a faulty drive shaft and a missing headlight upon pickup. The heating system also stopped working and the sunroof required occasional recycling. Although it took four replacements, the issue was eventually resolved. Currently, the car is back with the dealership to address a noise from the roof. While I have had some challenges with this car, I am hopeful that the dealership will be able to resolve the issue. I would recommend caution when considering this car and dealership.

I've had experience with 2 3.0 Liter X Types. The first one was great, with only a few minor issues in 2 years. However, the sport model I currently have has been less reliable, with constant new noises and 2 unexplained breakdowns. It has been in the shop for maintenance around 10 times, but thankfully I have a warranty. It's worth noting that the car's value depreciates quickly, which is common for European cars. If you're considering purchasing one, it's important to have a warranty.

If you're looking for a car that offers great value and quality, you may want to consider a German nameplate instead of a Jaguar. While the initial MSRP may be low, adding features that you would expect from a Jaguar can quickly increase the price. However, the interior is beautiful and probably the finest in its class. The 2.5 engine is not the strongest, but it is not abysmal either. The ride is pleasant and enjoyable. If you have the budget for a fully loaded car, you may find better value and quality with a German nameplate. Based on extensive research and test drives, I believe that BMW does a much better job in terms of reliability on long commutes. Of course, I understand how the style of a Jaguar can be convincing to buyers. However, if you're looking for a car that offers great value and quality, you may want to consider other options.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this car - it's absolutely beautiful and runs like a dream! I highly recommend it. However, I did encounter a problem back in December where it suddenly stopped running at 2975 RPMS. Despite putting in new coils and a new fuel pump, it didn't seem to make a difference. I'm not quite sure what to do next, but for now, I'm just driving it with a light foot and it still runs up to 80 MPH before hitting 2975. Have any of you experienced this issue before? Let's connect and see if we can figure it out together! [contact info removed]

In March 2008, my 2002 X-Type went out of warranty. This morning, I took the car to the shop due to a slipping transmission. Despite seeing a gear fault light for the past 2 years, the service center was unable to duplicate the message. Unfortunately, the transmission has now failed and the cost of repair is close to $9K, which is more than the current value of the car. This experience raises concerns about the reliability of purchasing such an expensive car.
