1997 Volkswagen Golf problems
The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.
The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common 1997 Volkswagen Golf problems
Based on the information from the sources provided, here is a detailed list of common problems with the 1997 Volkswagen Golf reported by owners:
- Rattling Sounds from Engine:
- Issue: Rattling sounds upon starting the engine that stop after driving a short distance are often caused by a faulty camshaft-driven high-pressure fuel pump.
- Solution: Replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump is recommended, especially if the rattling persists.
- Engine Misfiring:
- Issue: Engine misfiring can occur due to problems with ignition coil packs.
- Solution: Check all ignition coil packs for damage and replace any faulty ones to resolve the misfiring issue.
- Limp Mode Activation:
- Issue: The car going into limp mode while driving can be linked to water pump problems.
- Solution: If the issue is related to the water pump, replacing it is advised to prevent the car from entering limp mode.
- Rough Gear Changes:
- Issue: Rough gear changes in earlier models of the Volkswagen Golf may be due to timing chain problems.
- Solution: Replacing the timing chain can resolve the rough gear change issue without the need to replace the entire gearbox unit.
- Difficulty Locking Rear Boot:
- Issue: Problems with locking the rear boot can be addressed by lubricating the actuator with WD40 or resetting the remote.
- Solution: Follow the owner's manual instructions for troubleshooting the locking issue before considering part replacements.
- Suspension Problems:
- Issue: Squeaking or rattling sounds from the front suspension may indicate issues with the anti-roll bushes.
- Solution: Replacement of the anti-roll bushes is necessary to address the suspension noises over rough terrains.
- Unresponsive Brakes:
- Issue: Brake servo pipe damage leading to unresponsive brakes when pressure is applied.
- Solution: Ordering a replacement brake servo pipe and installing it can restore brake responsiveness and prevent fluid leaks.
- Overheating ABS Unit:
- Issue: Golfs manufactured between 1997 and 2004 may experience overheating ABS units due to electrical faults.
- Solution: Addressing the electrical fault in the ABS control unit is crucial to prevent ABS unit overheating issues.
- Damaged Seat Belts:
- Issue: Seat belts tightening excessively due to faulty pre-tensioners, posing a risk of fire.
- Solution: Prompt replacement of seat belt pre-tensioners is essential to prevent safety hazards associated with seat belt malfunction.
These common problems with the 1997 Volkswagen Golf highlight various mechanical issues that owners may encounter and the corresponding solutions to address them effectively.
Are old VW Golfs reliable?
The Volkswagen Golf is generally a reliable car. In our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, petrol models came 18th out of 29 cars in the family car category, while diesel ones actually ranked higher – 14th. Petrol models received a reliability rating of 90.4%, while diesel ones 92.5%.
How long will a VW Golf engine last?
Most Volkswagen vehicles will last between 100,000 and 200,000 miles, although well-kept models can last even longer than that. All VWs are remarkably reliable vehicles. When it comes to longevity, the Golf, Passat, Jetta, and Beetle are known to be particularly long-lasting.
Is VW Golf a good car to buy?
Yes, it's the Volkswagen Golf, the 'hear hooves, think horses' of family hatchbacks. It's an industry benchmark. A vanguard in the battle against the overdone, overblown and ostentatious. An easy (and possibly lazy) recommendation given by all car people to non-car people when they simply need 'a car'.
Which VW Golf is most reliable?
We recommend the 2014 model, the Volkswagen Golf Mk6, for an excellent combination of classic Golf and new technology features. According to motorbiscuit.com, the 2014 Volkswagen Golf is the best because it is more reliable than the previous generation and filled with technology the old Volkswagen Golf did not have.

I'm so glad you're interested in this car! It's been a wonderful surprise since I bought it from a friend last year. I own both an older BMW 7 series and a Porsche 944, but I find myself driving this car day to day because it's just so enjoyable. It's tight, nimble, and can cruise for hours at 85 mph while sipping between 30-32 mpg. Even though I'm six foot three, I have no problem fitting in, even with the moon roof! It's almost 11 years old, but after having it detailed, it looks like it's brand new.
-
Such a surprise! This quiet little car is so much fun to drive, with plenty of room inside! Great get-up-and-go! Hope you have as much fun in yours as we do in ours
-
This car is a phenomenal drive. You can feel very safe in it, even though it is a small car. It handles well on all terrain.
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it back in May of 2011 with only 63,000 miles on it, and I had never driven a manual car before then. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this car was very easy to learn how to drive manual, and it's been a blast to drive ever since. It hugs corners like a dream! While it may not have the most power, it's still a great car overall. If you're in the market for a car with low miles, I would highly recommend checking this one out for yourself.
-
This was my first car. I bought it in 1999 as a VW Assured vehicle with 56,000 miles on it. It's been a great car and has only needed to go to the shop once in the three years that I've had it.

I purchased this car around 6 months ago and have had some challenges with it. I have had to replace the throttle body gasket, fuel pump, alternator belt, and the entire ignition system. The car averages around 19.8mpg and can barely go 500km. Unfortunately, the airbag light has been stuck on since I purchased it and the hatch won't open from the back, so I have to open it from the glove box. Additionally, I had an issue with my blinker, but I was able to resolve it. Despite these challenges, I am grateful that the previous owner stored it in their garage, which has helped to preserve the car.
Osvaldo DuBuque 2024-09-04
The headgasket was replaced at 96,000KM, but unfortunately it seems to have gone again just one week later. While waiting for Klaus to come with the towtruck, I must say that the car is very comfortable. As for the design, it seems a bit overcomplicated to me, which may have contributed to some issues. However, I don't think it's fair to blame Germany's loss in the war on car design.

Although we bought this car a couple of years ago with only 19K miles on it, we have since added another 30K. Despite being a wonderful car at first, lately we have been experiencing some issues such as the dash lights coming on for no reason, the trunk pop button only working periodically, the rear defrost working occasionally, the driver's side lock cylinder coming out of the door, and the rear brake shoe breaking in half due to a bad bearing. However, we have been able to fix all these issues and the car still runs fine. In the future, we will consider buying a Honda or Toyota, but for now, we are confident in our ability to maintain and repair our current car.
Sigmund Hyatt 2024-03-04
Despite all scheduled maintenance and oil changes, my VW has required a significant amount of unscheduled maintenance for various issues that have prevented it from running smoothly. These issues include the ignition coil and ignition wires (x2), starter motor and solenoid, distributor, radiator, wiper motors, door lock cylinder, o2 sensor, coolant flange (due to coolant leaking), and valve head gasket (due to oil leaking). Although the list goes on and on, I have remained confident in my ability to handle these issues and get my car back on the road. While I have had to wait for a tow truck on several occasions, I have never lost faith in my VW. However, I have learned from these experiences and will be more cautious in the future when purchasing a car.

I've owned this car for about 2 years now. While it is fun to drive, there is definitely room for improvement. The interior is well laid out, but unfortunately the center console cup holders are not very useful and there is excessive road noise. The gas mileage is only average and the car is a bit underpowered. On the highway, I was able to get up to 30 mpg, with an average of 28, while in the city it gets a little above 20. It's a shame that power windows are not standard on all models, especially for a four-door car. Lastly, it's important to be aware of the potential repair costs. VW parts can be expensive, similar to those of a German car, and this can also affect insurance premiums.
