Common Jaguar S-type 2002 problems
The Jaguar S-Type, produced between 1999 and 2009, has gained a reputation for certain common problems that Jaguar owners have reported
. This article will delve into these issues, providing details on each problem and possible solutions.
- Rear Suspension Bushings: The Jaguar S-Type's rear suspension bushings, known as Hydra bushes, are fluid-filled and tend to wear out relatively quickly. These bushings are found in the rear shock lower bushing and the three bushings on the rear lower control arm. When they fail, they can cause a terrible clunking sound while driving . The bushings can be replaced, but the process involves pressing out and pressing back in the new ones, which may require a separate video tutorial .
- Automatic Climate Control: The automatic climate control system in the Jaguar S-Type is prone to failure, particularly the climate control valve (CCV) located in the engine compartment. This failure can lead to issues with the car's heating and cooling systems. The CCV is responsible for regulating the temperature inside the vehicle, and when it fails, it can cause the climate control system to malfunction. This issue is common in the Jaguar S-Type and can be resolved by replacing the failed component .
- Transmission: The 2003 Jaguar S-Type is equipped with a five-speed Getrag transmission and the sport package. While the manual transmission is generally reliable, there are some issues to be aware of. The throw-out bearing, which is integrated with the slave cylinder, can fail, requiring the replacement of the entire unit. Additionally, the transmission mount can fail due to oil leaks, which can cause the rubber to melt away over time. Replacing the transmission mount is a relatively straightforward process, but it's essential to address any transmission leaks promptly to prevent further damage .
- Evap Leaks: Evap leaks are a common problem in the Jaguar S-Type, often triggering a check engine light. These leaks can be small or large and can be challenging to diagnose. One solution is to create a homemade smoke machine using baby oil, a glass, and clear tubing to locate the leak. Once the leak is identified, the necessary part can be replaced. While the parts are not typically expensive, accessing some components can be difficult, especially the carbon canister, which is buried between the body and the rear subframe .
- Seat Belt Buckle Concerns: Early Jaguar S-Type models suffered from seat belt buckle concerns, which could lead to the automatic gearbox engaging reverse when in forward drive. This issue was more prevalent in the first-generation machines and was addressed in later models, particularly those produced after 2004.
- Front Suspension Ball-Joint Failure: Another common problem in the Jaguar S-Type is front suspension ball-joint failure. This issue can lead to a less comfortable driving experience and potential safety concerns. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address this problem before it becomes a significant issue.
- Premature Engine Wear: Some early Jaguar S-Type models experienced premature engine wear, which could lead to costly repairs and maintenance. This issue was more prevalent in the first-generation machines and was addressed in later models, particularly those produced after 2004.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, often brought on by water leaks, were common in the early Jaguar S-Type models. These issues could lead to various malfunctions, including the automatic gearbox engaging reverse when in forward drive. Regular inspections and maintenance can help identify and address these problems before they become significant issues.
In conclusion, the Jaguar S-Type, while a luxurious and high-performance vehicle, has been known to experience several common problems. By being aware of these issues and addressing them promptly, owners can ensure their S-Type remains a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to drive.
How reliable is an S-Type Jaguar?
Owns this car
Jaguars are consistently among the best-handling cars of their kind and the Jaguar on this year make a very good car, reliable. The Jaguar usually last with 125,000 or 150,000 miles can be a good investment, since you're likely to clear 200,000 miles or more.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-11-03
- VIN: SAJDA01P22G
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I WAS SLOWING TO STOP IN A LINE OF TRAFFIC ON A CITY STREET. AS I SLOWED, THE BRAKE PEDAL FELT SOFT, AND THE CAR REVVED UP, ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE. I THEN PUSHED HEAVILY ONTO THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT HAD NO ABILITY TO STOP THE CAR. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV. LUCKILY, I WAS SLOWING FROM A FAR ENOUGH DISTANCE THAT I WAS ABLE TO FORCEFULLY PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND STOP THE CAR. HOWEVER, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV EVEN THOUGH BOTH FEET WERE OFF ALL PEDALS AND THE CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL. I THEN TAPPED THE BRAKE PEDAL IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET THE ENGINE TO STOP REVVING, BUT IT HAD NO EFFECT. NEXT, I TAPPED THE GAS PEDAL TO ATTEMPT TO GET THE ENGINE TO STOP REVVING, WITH THIS, THE ENGINE DID STOP REVVING AND RETURNED TO NORMAL RPM'S. VERY SCARY AND QUITE DISTURBING, ESPECIALLY SINCE I HAVE READ OVER 30 COMPLAINTS ON WEBSITES REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE OTHERS HAVE HAD WITH THEIR JAGUARS. WHY IS NOTHING BEING DONE? HOW MANY PEOPLE NEED TO REPORT THIS TO HAVE A CASE OPENED?
