Common 2004 Jaguar S-type problems

The Jaguar S-Type, produced between 1999 and 2009, is known for several common problems that Jaguar owners have reported

. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues and their details:

  • Rear suspension bushings: The Jaguar S-Type uses fluid-filled bushings, also known as Hydra bushes, in the rear suspension. These bushings are designed to absorb road shocks and improve ride quality. However, they wear out relatively quickly and need to be replaced. The rear shock lower bushing and the three bushings on the rear lower control arm are the most common ones that need replacement. These bushings can be replaced without having to replace the entire control arms, which can save thousands of dollars .
  • Automatic climate control: The automatic climate control system in the Jaguar S-Type is known for being overly complicated and prone to failure. The most common components that fail are the climate control valve (CCV) and the air conditioning compressor. The CCV, located in the engine compartment, controls the flow of air and refrigerant to the cabin. When it fails, the climate control system may not function properly, and the engine may run hot. The air conditioning compressor, located at the front of the engine, is responsible for compressing the refrigerant and circulating it through the system. When it fails, the air conditioning may not work, or it may blow warm air.
  • Ignition coil failure: Early cars of the Jaguar S-Type suffered from ignition coil failures, which led to misfiring and poor engine idling. Faulty ignition coils are the most common cause of this problem on the S-Type. Replacing the ignition coils will rectify the problem. The ignition coils are located on top of the engine and are responsible for generating the high voltage needed to create a spark in the spark plugs. When they fail, the engine may misfire, idle poorly, or stall.
  • Water pump failure: The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine to keep it at the correct temperature. When it fails, the engine may overheat, leading to engine damage. The water pump is located at the front of the engine and is driven by the timing belt or chain. When it fails, it may leak coolant, make noise, or stop circulating coolant. Replacing the water pump will fix the problem.
  • Engine management warning light: The engine management warning light, also known as the check engine light, may appear on the dashboard when there is a problem with the engine management system. The most likely cause is a faulty lambda sensor, which is responsible for measuring the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases. When it fails, the engine may run poorly, consume more fuel, or produce more emissions. Running a diagnostic check will help identify the problem, and fitting a replacement lambda sensor will fix the problem.
  • Folding door mirrors: The folding door mirrors on the Jaguar S-Type are known for sticking when you press the button on the centre console. They may also make a screeching noise when folding away. The problem is simply resolved by cleaning and lubricating the joints on the mirrors.
  • Transmission problems: The Jaguar S-Type is equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission, which is known for being reliable. However, there are some smallish issues around it. One is the throw-out bearing, which is integrated with the slave cylinder in a concentric way. When it fails, you have to drop the transmission and replace it as one unit. The other thing is the transmission mount. There's a transmission mount on the bottom of the car, and whenever you get any kind of a leak from the transmission, even a small leak, the oil usually tends to accumulate right on top of the mount and of course the oil over time will melt away the rubber and the transmission mount will fail. This is not that difficult to replace and it's relatively cheap .
  • Evap leaks: The evaporative emission control system (EVAP) is responsible for capturing and storing fuel vapors to prevent them from being released into the atmosphere. When there is a leak in the EVAP system, the check engine light may appear on the dashboard. One way to diagnose the problem is to make your own smoke machine out of a little bit of baby oil, a glass, and some clear tubing and try to find the where the leak is in the system. Then replace whatever part needs replacing. The parts are not that expensive, but some of the parts are really difficult to get to .
  • Central locking problem: If some of the doors are not locking/unlocking when using the central locking, it is usually due to a problem with the door lock itself. You will need to replace the faulty door lock to resolve the issue.
  • Premature engine wear: Early cars of the Jaguar S-Type suffered from premature engine wear, which was brought on by water leaks. A visit to the Vehicle and Operator Safety Agency website at .

In conclusion, the Jaguar S-Type is a luxury sedan that offers a smooth ride, quick acceleration, and a unique styling. However, it is known for several common problems that Jaguar owners have reported. These problems range from rear suspension bushings to automatic climate control to ignition coil failures. By being aware of these problems and taking preventive measures, such as regular maintenance and inspections, Jaguar owners can enjoy the benefits of owning a luxury sedan without the hassle of frequent repairs.

What was the problem with the 2004 Jaguar?

JAGUAR IS RECALLING 14,551 MY 2004 XJ VEHICLES. A POTENTIAL CONCERN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED WITH THE INSTALLATION OF A NOISE VIBRATION AND HARSHNESS (NVH) PAD FITTED TO THE UNDER TRAY AND ITS INTERACTION WITH THE REAR UNDER FLOOR BRAKE PIPES, REAR CROSS MEMBER BRAKE PIPES, AND THEIR UNIONS.

How reliable is an S-Type Jaguar?

Owns this car

Jaguars are consistently among the best-handling cars of their kind and the Jaguar on this year make a very good car, reliable. The Jaguar usually last with 125,000 or 150,000 miles can be a good investment, since you're likely to clear 200,000 miles or more.

Which is the best engine in Jaguar S-Type?

Don't be put off by the 2.5-litre engine. It may be the entry-level unit, but it's powerful enough for most drivers. The 3.0-litre offers greater performance, while the V8 models are smooth and torquey. But if you can live with V8 fuel bills, you can probably afford the superior diesel.

How many miles can a 2003 Jaguar S-Type last?

Most Jaguar vehicles will last for at least 150,000 miles, but there's a lot that a driver can do to push this number much higher. With regular oil replacement, belt changes, spark plug replacement, and other basic maintenance services, you can ensure that your Jaguar lasts for 200,000 miles or more.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-05-24
  • VIN: SAJEA01T54F
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: THIS VEHICLE HAS ISSUES WITH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT RESPONDING PROPERLY TO THE COMPUTER AND NEEDS TO BE REPROGRAMMED IN THIS MODEL, ALSO THE PARKING BRAKES DO GET MIXED UP AND IF YOU PUT THE GEAR CONTROL IN DRIVE IT GOES INTO REVERSE AND THE PARKING BRAKE DEFAULT LIGHT AND TRANSMISSION DEFAULT LIGHT IS ON, MY VEHICLE MALFUNCTIONED WITH THE PARKING BRAKE WHILE I WAS IN THE PARKING LOT AND LEAVING TO GO HOME I PLACE IT IN DRIVE AND IT JUMPED INTO REVERSE....VERY DANGEROUS AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AND THE TRANSMISSION DEFAULT HAPPENED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE IN SPEED OR EVEN GO PROPERLY AT ALL

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-20
  • VIN: SAJEA01T84F
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: WHILE ON THE EXPRESSWAY WHILE COMING TO A STOP MY CAR SWITCHED INTO REVERSE ON ITS OWN WHILE IT WAS IN THE DRIVE.THE CAR BEGAN TO DRIVE BACKWARDS ALMOST CAUSING A MAJOR CRASH ON I64 EAST IN VIRGINIA. THIS NEARLY RESULTED IN ME LOSING MY LIFE AS WELL AS PASSENGERS AND OTHER DRIVERS. THE CAR ALSO HAS AN AUTOMATIC PARKING LOCK ENGAGING ERROR WHICH LOCKED MY ENTIRE CAR AND PREVENTED ME FROM DRIVING. THIS ALSO OCCURRED AND NEARLY A WEEK AGO IN DRIVE THRU A WEEK AGO. WHILE IN THE DRIVE THRU THE CAR LOCKED IN PARK AND WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO DRIVE. UNFORTUNATELY, I HAD TO PAY TO HAVE MY CAR TOWED FROM A MCDONALDS DRIVE THRU AROUND 2:00AM DUE TO THE PARKING LOCK ERROR. ALSO THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION THAT DOES NOT ALLOW THE CAR TO CATCH. THIS I BELIEVE IS THE REASON THE CAR IS ABLE TO SLIP GEARS IN TO REVERSE WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS. INITIALLY I THOUGHT THE ISSUES WITH THE CAR MAY HAVE BEEN A RESULT OF SOMETHING I WAS DOING. BUT AFTER RESEARCHING I SAW THAT THERE ARE AS MANY AS 10 RECALLS FOR MY CAR YEAR AND MODEL. I WAS ABLE TO EASILY IDENTIFY THAT MY CAR HAD THE EXACT PROBLEMS LISTED.

I WAS TOLD DURING DRIVING GOING OVER BUMPS IN THE ROAD IT WILL JAR THE PLASTIC SCREW AND EVENTUALLY BREAK. I STUFF PAPER IN LIGHTS TO PROP UP AND TRY TO KEEP IN PLACE. SOMETIME WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD AND MY HEAD LIGHTS JUST DROP AND I HAVE TO PULL OVER TO STUFF MORE PAPER IN THERE TO PROP UP MY LIGHTS . IF DRIVING DOWN A DARK ROAD OR ON THE FREEWAY AND THIS HAPPENS IT IS REALLY BAD. I DEALT WITH THIS THE BEST WAY I COULD FOR ALL THESE YEARS AND I JUST RECENTLY FOUND OUT I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. JAGUAR SAID THEY USE TO SELL A KIT FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT NOT ANYMORE. I DO HOPE YOU FIND MANY MORE PEOPLE WITH THIS PROBLEM AND HELP US ALL. THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-10-03
  • VIN: SAJEA01T44F
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON 10/03/09 WHILE DRIVING ON HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY (HAD DRIVEN APPROX 150 MILES) AT SPEED OF 65 MPH MY ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED. I PAID TO TOW VEHICLE TO MY HOME AUTHORIZED DEALER. FOUND THAT FUSE FOR FUEL PUMP HAD BLOWN. MILEAGE WAS 35,896. AGAIN ON 03/21/10 WHILE DRIVING APPROX 60 MPH ON I-695 (HAD DRIVEN APPROX 160 MILES) MY ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED. MILEAGE WAS 37360.TOWED VEHICLE TO SAME AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO FOUND THAT FUSE FOR FUEL PUMP HAD BLOWN. BETWEEN THE FIRST FAILURE AND THE SECOND FAILURE THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN ONLY 1464 MILES.BOTH TIMES I WAS ON HIGH SPEED ROAD IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND NEARLY HIT IN READ TRYING TO GET OFF ROADWAY. DEALER CAN'T FIND CAUSE FOR BLOWN FUSE AND SUGGESTED THAT REMOVE GASOLINE TANK TO CHECK WIRING BUT ONLY IF I PAY FOR IT. I THINK DEALER SHOULD INVESTIGATE IT BECAUSE THIS IS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. IF THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE IS DEPENDENT ON THE FUSE ONE WOULD EXPECT THAT THE FUSE NOT BLOW WHILE ON A HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY. THUS, THERE SEEMS TO BE A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE. JAGUAR SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO INVESTIGATE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS AND I AM CONCERNED ABOUT DRIVING IT ON A TRIP OF ANY DISTANCE. IT SEEMS THAT THE FUSE BLOWS AFTER DRIVING A DISTANCE AT HIGH SPEEDS. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-03-21
  • VIN: SAJEA01T44F
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: SEE ODI NUMBER 1032451 FOR A COMPLAINT FILED BY ME FOR INCIDENT ON 10/03/09. THE SAME TYPE OF EVENT OCCURRED ON 03/21/10. I COVERED IT ALL IN THE FIRST ODI REPORT, BUT I WANT TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT EVERYONE IS AWARE THAT THE FUSE BLEW AGAIN 5 MONTHS LATER AFTER ONLY 1,464 MILES AFTER THE FIRST TIME. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE WIRING OR THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FUSE BECAUSE IF IT BLOWS, THE ENGINE STOPS. THUS, JAGUAR WOULD NOT EXPECT THE FUSE TO BLOW, OR OTHERWISE MANY VEHICLES WOULD SUDDENLY STOP OPERATING WHILE ON HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY. FOR THIS REASON, I CONTEND THAT IT IS NOT THE FUSE ITSELF BUT SOME TYPE OF DESIGN PROBLEM THAT IS CAUSING THE FUSE TO BLOW. MY WIFE WAS WITH ME ON BOTH TRIPS WHEN IT HAPPENED. SHE IS AFRAID TO DRIVE IN THE VEHICLE ESPECIALLY ON A INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. WE HAD PLANNED ON SEVERAL LONG TRIPS THIS SUMMER BUT DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THE CHANCE OF BEING KILLED OR STRANDED ON A HIGHWAY A LONG DISTANCE FROM HOME. THE FIRST TIME WE PAID TO HAVE VEHICLE TOWED ABOUT 140 MILES BECAUSE IT WAS A SATURDAY AND NO JAGUAR DEALERS FOR ABOUT 100 MILES. I REQUEST THAT SOMEONE FROM YOUR AGENCY CALL ME TO DISCUSS. THE DEALER DID NOT WANT TO REPORT IT TO JAGUAR BECAUSE THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED IT. I THINK THAT THEY DID AFTER I COMPLAINED AND ALSO CONTACTED JAGUAR CUSTOMER SERVICE. I WONDER HOW MANY OTHER PERSONS HAD THE FUSE BLOW BUT THEY ALSO DID NOT REPORT IT TO JAGUAR OR ANYONE. THE DEALER SAID THAT THEY COULD REMOVE TO FUEL TANK AND CHECK WIRING AT A COST TO ME OF ABOUT $850.00 OR REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP AT A COST TOO ME OF $1500.00, BUT THAT THESE MAY NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I THINK THAT JAGUAR SHOULD INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM AND AFTER THEY FIND THE PROBLEM DISCUSS IF I SHOULD PAY FOR ANY OF THE COST. PLEASE CONTACT ME. THANKS. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-04-16
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I SAW ON THE NEWS TODAY HOW A LADY WAS ENTERING A RESTAURANT PARKING LOT AND HER VEHICLE SUDDEN LURCHED FORWARD AND CAUSED HER TO CRASH INTO A FENCE. WELL IF THE CAR WAS A JAGUAR S TYPE I'M SURE THE COMPANY WOULD TELL HER WHAT THEY TOLD ME. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I HAD 2004 JAGUAR S TYPE TWICE THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD WHEN I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT. I HAD BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE AND I WAS SHIFTING THROUGH THE GEARS TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. IN ONE INCIDENT THE CAR STOPPED ABOUT 5FT. INTO THE SPOT IN FRONT OF ME. IN THE SECOND INCIDENT I DID THE SAME THING AND THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED WHEN THE CAR GOT HUNG UP ON THE CURB. I FILLED A REPORT WITH JAGUAR IN NEW JERSEY AND THEY SAID MY ONLY RECOURSE WAS TO FILE AN INSURANCE CLAIM???? I BROUGHT THE CAR TO TWO DEALERS AND WAS TOLD THEY WERE TOLD BY JAGUAR NOT TO TOUCH THE CAR BECAUSE THAT WOULD MEAN THAT JAGUAR WAS AT FAULT. I HAD TO TRADE IN THE CAR BECAUSE EVERY TIME I CAME TO A STOP, I DIDN'T KNOW IF I WAS GOING TO CRASH INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REFERENCE TO MY INCIDENT ON THE WEB UNDER JAGUAR LURCH. JAGUAR SHOULD BE MADE ACCOUNTABLE AND MADE TO FIX THE PROBLEM WHICH THEY SAY DOES NOT EXIST. THANKS. *TR

AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC REPAIRED THE RADIATOR AND FOUND THAT MOST OF THE COMPONENTS UNDER THE HOOD WERE NOT JAGUAR PARTS. THE PARTS WERE JEEP, CHEVROLET, AND OTHER BRANDS. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY INVOLVED IN TWO MAJOR CRASHES. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, THE CONTACT FOUND HOLES IN THE RADIATOR HOSES. IN ADDITION, THE WATER PUMP WAS CRACKED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. LATER, WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 35 MPH, THE BRAKES FAILED. A POLICE OFFICER FLAGGED HER DOWN AND INFORMED HER THAT SMOKE AND SPARKS WERE COMING FROM THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC STATED THAT THE CALIPER FAILED. THE SYSTEM WOULD NOT ACCEPT THE VIN PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 54,000.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-10-28
  • VIN: SAJDA01P41G
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: UPON PURCHASING THE VEHICLE FROM THE DEALER IN USED CONDITION W/ ROUGHLY 50000 I IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO NOTICE SHIFTER PROBLEMS, ESPECIALLY IF THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON AN INCLINE OR DECLINE. SHIFTER WILL BECOME STUCK AND WILL NOT COME OUT OF PARK WITHOUT GREAT FORCE, WHICH THEN BREAKS THE PLASTIC PIECE WHICH IS NECESSARY TO CHANGE OUT THE GEARS, RESULTING IN COMPLETE IMMOBILITY OF THE VEHICLE SINCE THE CAR WAS THEN STUCK IN PARK. CAR WOULD HAVE NEEDED TO BE TOWED IF NOT FOR BEING ABLE TO TAKE OFF THE CONSOLE PIECE TO CHANGE OUT THE GEARS W/ A SCREWDRIVER IN ORDER TO JUST GET THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS WAS LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER PURCHASE. UPON COMPLAINT THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE PLASTIC PIECE OR HOUSING AND ATTEMPTED TO CHARGE $400+ BUT WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD NOT BE PAID DUE TO HAVING THE VEHICLE LESS THAN A MONTH. NOT SURPRISINGLY,LESS THAN ONE MONTH AFTER REPAIR THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN AND ONCE AGAIN THE SCREWDRIVER AIDED IN GETTING THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY WENT THROUGH THE EXACT SAME PROCEDURE AND "FIXED"THE PROBLEM AGAIN, THIS TIME AT NO CHARGE. I AM CONFIDENT THIS PROBLEM WILL HAPPEN AGAIN, AS THE SHIFTER STILL STICKS JUST LIKE IT DID BEFORE IT BROKE EITHER TIME AND I AM JUST COUNTING THE DAYS TILL I AM FORCED TO ONCE AGAIN BREAK OUT THE SCREWDRIVER AND WASTE ANOTHER FULL DAY GETTING IT REPLACED. *AK
