Common 2005 Jaguar S-type problems

The Jaguar S-Type, produced between 1999 and 2009, is known for its luxurious design and performance. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are the top 10 issues based on complaints from owners, along with details and potential solutions

:

  1. Rear Suspension Bushings: The Jaguar S-Type uses Hydra bushes, which are fluid-filled and wear out relatively quickly. This includes the rear shock lower bushing and the three bushings on the rear lower control arm. Replacing these bushings can be done without replacing the entire control arms, but it requires pressing out and pressing back in.
  2. Automatic Climate Control: The automatic climate control system is overly complicated and prone to failure, particularly the climate control valve (CCV) in the engine compartment. This component can be replaced, but it may require some expertise.
  3. Ignition Coil Failures: Early S-Type models suffered from ignition coil failures, which can lead to misfires and reduced performance. Regular maintenance and replacement of ignition coils can help prevent this issue.
  4. Premature Engine Wear: Some S-Type models experienced premature engine wear, particularly in high-mileage vehicles. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and inspections, can help mitigate this issue.
  5. Electrical Problems: Water leaks can cause electrical problems in the S-Type, leading to various issues such as malfunctioning lights or electronics. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent these problems.
  6. Seat Belt Buckle Concerns: Some S-Type models have had seat belt buckle concerns, which can pose a safety risk. Check for recalls and have any necessary repairs done by a qualified technician.
  7. Front Suspension Ball-Joint Failure: This issue can affect the handling and safety of the vehicle. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent or address this problem.
  8. Automatic Gearbox Issues: There have been reports of automatic gearboxes engaging reverse when in forward drive, which can be dangerous. Check for recalls and have any necessary repairs done by a qualified technician.
  9. Transmission: The five-speed Getrag transmission in the S-Type is generally reliable but can have issues with the throw-out bearing and transmission mount. Replacing these components may require dropping the transmission, which can be costly and time-consuming.
  10. Evap Leaks: Evap leaks can cause check engine lights and may be hard to diagnose. Making your own smoke machine or using a professional diagnostic tool can help identify and address these leaks.

In conclusion, while the Jaguar S-Type is a luxurious and capable vehicle, it does have its share of common problems. Regular maintenance, inspections, and addressing issues as they arise can help ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

  • VIN: SAJWA03V051
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My wife's 2005 Jaguar S-Type R leaks fuel, and is worst after refilling the tank. The car frequently loses all engine power while driving with no warning. It frequently refuses to restart, and then I have to have it towed sometimes at great distances from home at a cost of over $700 to my repair shop in Virginia. My wife is now too afraid to drive the car because of the gas fumes, fear of a fire, and sudden engine failure. My service technician at Mountain Valley Motors believes the problem has to do with a faulty Jaguar fuel system.

Negative 2005 Jaguar S-type car reviews

  1. Gene Witting 2024-06-10

Within 3 months, your car has been serviced 3 times for a bad transmission that they have not been able to fix. We understand that this can be frustrating, especially considering the price of the car. We recommend looking elsewhere for a solution. We have never experienced this issue with BMW or Mercedes, and we own all three. We understand that it can be difficult to trust a dealer with repairs, and we empathize with your concerns.

Positive 2005 Jaguar S-type car reviews

  1. Everardo Murphy 2025-01-09

It's great to hear that you finally got your dream car! I'm glad that you did your research and found a certified '05 S Type with only 30K miles. It sounds like you're really enjoying the smooth ride and powerful pick up of the 6 cyl engine. It's impressive that you're getting such good gas mileage, even up to 32 MPG on the freeway! Your feline car seems to be able to handle anything you ask of it. It's wonderful to hear that the engine purrs like a cat too!

  2. Maxine Morar 2025-01-05

I am delighted to hear about your positive experience with the 2005 Jaguar S with 4.2 L engine. The car boasts beautiful styling both inside and out, and is incredibly stable on the road in all kinds of weather, including ice and snow. The handling is tremendous, and the acceleration is great. Additionally, the car is ergonomically efficient and has good gas mileage, as well as great safety features. While the seats are firm, they are also comfortable, and the dials are easy to read. It is unfortunate that you experienced issues with the electrical system and steering column noises in your 2003 S type, but it is wonderful to hear that this 2005 car has been perfect for you.

  3. Domingo Conroy 2025-01-04

I think it's interesting that Edmunds gave this car poor reviews without even test driving it. Perhaps they relied too heavily on older reviews and the manufacturer's claims of changes. Personally, I love this car and have never had any issues with it. As someone who has owned several Jags over the years, I can confidently say that this car stands out in terms of ride and performance. I also wanted to clarify that Ford no longer owns Jag or Land Rover, which was the case up until 2008. If you're considering a Stype, I would recommend not going older than 2005 and making sure it has been well maintained. Overall, I think this is a great car and would highly recommend it.

  4. Leopoldo Krajcik 2024-11-17

Fast, luxurious, comfortable, and very easy to handle. It's a shame that my personal experience with the car was not as positive as I had hoped. Unfortunately, I had to trade it in after 25 months due to reliability issues. While it was in the shop for warranty work for 38 days, I did appreciate the wonderful performance when it was running. If you have the resources and live near a Jaguar dealer, it may still be worth considering.

  5. Adolph Will 2024-11-16

My wife surprised me with a beautiful platinum S Type 3.0 with a big red bow, just like the commercials on TV! I absolutely love my Jag - the styling, comfort, ride feel, power, and the great sound system are all perfect for me. I also enjoy the adoring looks and comments I get from everyone. I now look for excuses to drive, and even when I'm stuck in traffic on the freeway, I don't mind at all!
