1995 Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.
In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.
The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

Common 1995 Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper from 1995 is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from engine problems to electrical and drivetrain concerns. Here are some of the most frequently reported problems with the 1995 Isuzu Trooper:
- Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump is a critical component responsible for delivering fuel to the engine. A failed fuel pump can lead to starting problems and excessive fuel consumption. In some cases, it may even result in the engine not starting at all. Replacing the fuel pump is the only solution, as mentioned in the search results.
- Oil Leaks: Isuzu was aware of an oil leak issue in the 1995 Trooper, as mentioned in the search results. The oil leak is most likely caused by a faulty front crankshaft oil seal. A revised design is available to address this issue.
- Timing Chain Tensioner Issues: The Trooper goes through timing chain tensioners faster than other cars, leading to a rattling sound from the front of the vehicle. Replacing the tensioner can resolve this issue, as mentioned in the search results.
- Catalytic Converter Failure: The catalytic converter, a key component of the exhaust system, can fail in the 1995 Trooper. This issue can lead to a loss of power and the check engine light illuminating. Replacing the catalytic converter is the only solution, as mentioned in the search results.
- Vacuum Hose, Solenoid, and Engine Valve Faults: The 4WD indicator may stay on even when the vehicle is in 2WD, indicating a fault in vacuum hoses, solenoids, or engine valves. Replacing the faulty part can resolve this issue, as mentioned in the search results.
- Differential Leaks: The differential, a key component of the drivetrain, can leak in the 1995 Trooper. This issue can lead to oil weeping or leaking out from underneath the vehicle, between the two rear wheels where the axle meets the prop shaft. Replacing the differential is the only solution, as mentioned in the search results.
- Transmission Service: The transmission in the 1995 Trooper requires regular service. If not kept up, a new or rebuilt transmission may be needed, as mentioned in the search results.
- Brake Light Fuse Blowing: If the brake light fuse blows, the transmission will go into limp mode, as mentioned in the search results.
These common problems with the 1995 Isuzu Trooper can affect the vehicle's performance, reliability, and safety. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate these issues and ensure the vehicle remains in good working condition.
Why did Isuzu stop making the Trooper?
SUV market changes and safety concerns doomed the Trooper
Unfortunately for Isuzu, mid-size classics like the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav-4 essentially cornered that market before they could find footing with their oddly conceived Vehicross and other compact models.

- VIN: JACDJ58V4S7
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: ACCELERATED FROM STOP AND THROTTLE STUCK. WAS ABLE TO SHUT DOWN ENGINE AND GET TO SIDE OF ROAD. INSPECTED CABLE AND FOUND THAT RUBBER BOOT ON ENGINE SIDE OF CABLE HOUSING HAD BECOME GUMMY/STICKY/SOFT AND HAD FOLDED IN ON ITSELF, STICKING TO THE INNER CABLE ITSELF. REMOVED BOOT TO GET HOME. LOOKED ONLINE FOR REPLACEMENT, AND FOUND THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL FOR EXACT SAME PROBLEM ON EXACT SAME MODEL AND YEAR, BUT AFTER CALLING ISUZU, WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL, THOUGH IT'S THE SAME PART NUMBER. OBVIOUSLY THE RECALL WAS INCOMPLETE, AND THERE ARE STILL CARS OUT THERE WHICH, LIKE MINE, HAVE THE SAME FAULTY SPEED CONTROL COMPONENTS. HAD I NOT KNOWN TO TAKE THE CAR OUT OF GEAR AND SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE, THERE COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN A CRASH. MY WIFE DRIVES MY 2 YEAR OLD SON IN THIS CAR. I ASK YOU TO PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE ON BEHALF OF PUBLIC SAFETY. *TR

- VIN: JACDJ58V3S7
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: 1(A). AFTER DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (ABOVE 60 MPH) THE ABS WARNING LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL NEARLY ALWAYS COMES ON. THIS HAS OCURRED HUNDREDS OF TIMES. 1(B). WHEN DRIVING IN SLIPPERY SNOWY CONDITIONS, AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKES THE ABS COMPUTER MAKES A LOUD BUZZING NOISE THAT WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION TO THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE ABS COMPONENT IS SEVERED BY EITHER REMOVING THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE FROM THE BATTERY OR REMOVING THE FUSE. THIS HAS OCURRED MANY TIMES, BUT ONLY THREE TIMES HAS IT CAUSED A LOSS OF CONTROL WHERE PEOPLE WERE AT RISK OF HARM. 2. UNDER THE BUZZING CONDITION NOTED IN 1(B) ABOVE, THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM SEEMS TO FAIL, WITH LESS CONTROL BECAUSE THE BRAKES LOCK UP, AND STEERING BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE. AT LEAST THREE INCIDENTS HAVE HAPPENED WHERE THE VEHICLE RAN INTO THE CURB WITH NO APPARANT DAMAGE, GREATFULLY NO OTHER VEHICLES OR PERSONS WERE INVOLVED. EACH INCIDENT 1(B) HAS HAPPENED ON WEEKENDS OR AT NIGHT AFTER THE DEALER WHO SERVICES THE VEHICLE IS CLOSED. 3. THE DEALER HAS FOUND NO PROBLEMS, STATING WE MUST BRING IN THE VEHICLE WITH THE LIGHT ON OR THE BUZZING OCCURRING IN ORDER TO LOCATE A PROBLEM. I BELIVE THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS ON OTHER ISUZU MODELS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT NOT FOR THE MODEL OR YEAR OF OUR VEHICLE.

THEREFORE, ONE OF YOUR EMPLOYEES HAD TO HAVE RECEIVED THE CD AND THE ESTIMATES WITH THE BOX, WHICH CONTAIN THE FAILED FIRESTONE TIRE. YOU STATED IN YOUR CORRESPONDENCE THAT YOU DO NOT POSSESS THOSE DOCUMENTS. THE ONLY WAY YOU COULD NOT POSSESS THOSE DOCUMENTS IS IF YOU LOST THEM!!! BECAUSE THEY WERE TAPED WITH THE MAILING/DELIVERY INSTRUCTIONS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX!!! YOU HAD TO HAVE DELIBERATELY THROWN AWAY THE CD AND THE ESTIMATES AFTER YOU TOOK DELIVERY OF THE BOX CONTAINING THE FAILED FIRESTONE TIRE!!! I CAN ONLY CONCLUDE THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DENY THE CLAIM BY DENYING THAT YOU RECEIVED THE EVIDENCE WHICH I CLEARLY SENT YOU. HAD TO HAD RECEIVED BOTH IF YOU RECEIVED ONE OR THE OTHER. AGAIN THE TWO OR THREE ITEMS WERE INSEPARABLE. THEREFORE, I AM REQUESTING YOU SEND ME A CHECK FOR $1380. 00 IMMEDIATELY PLUS THE COST OF THE REPLACEMENT TIRE, WHICH I WILL LET YOU FIGURE OUT FOR YOURSELF. SEND IT TO; [XXX]. IN DECEMBER, 1998 WHILE UNDER WARRANTY I HAD TOTH BUICK REPLACE THE HEAD GASKETS. WITHIN A FEW MONTHS IT WAS LEAKING OIL AGAIN SO I TOOK IT BACK IN FOR MY USUAL OIL CHANGE AND TOLD THEM. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT IT PROBABLY WASN'T LEAKING OIL, IT JUST USES ABOUT A QUART OF OIL EVERY 1,000 MILES. HE SAID HE WOULD DO A CONSUMPTION TEST AND WALKED AWAY. WELL WHEN THE TRUCK WAS READY TO GO, I ASKED IF THEY DID A CONSUMPTION TEST AND THE LADY AT THE SERVICE DESK TOLD ME TO BRING IT BACK WHEN IT RUNS OUT OF OIL. I THOUGHT WHAT IS SHE NUTS, YEAH I' LL BE BACK WHEN THE ENGINE BLOWS UP. SURE ENOUGH I WAS BACK IN A MONTH BECAUSE THE OIL LEAK CAUSED MY ALTERNATOR TO SHORT OUT. THEY AGREED TO FIX THE OIL LEAK PROBLEM AGAIN SINCE THEY NEVER FIXED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS TIME I NEEDED A VALVE GASKET COVER. HOWEVER, THEY SAID I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE RUINED ALTERNATOR. SO I TOLD THEM TO. *AK

- VIN: JACDJ58V7S7

- Summary: I CONTACTED ISUZU OF AMERICA CUSTOMER RELATIONS HOTLINE AND WAS "BRUSHED OFF". MY ISUZU TROOPER WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION PRIOR TO THE CRASH AND THE COMPUTER FAILURE WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION BY THE ISUZU MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED YET, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION. I WAS TOLD NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE PCM IS MALFUNCTIONING AND CAN CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO GO OUT OF CONTROL. IN FACT, I WHEN IN THE "DRIVE" MODE ON THE SELCTOR, THE COMPUTER PUTS THE TRANSMISSION IN "REVERSE". IN ORDER TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE, THE GEAR SELECTOR HAS TO BE IN "NEUTRAL". THERE IS NO "PARK" GEAR. THE COMPUTER WENT OUT WITHOUT WARNING AND TOLD THE TRANSMISSION TO GO INTO "REVERSE" MODE. THE FLOOR SHIFTER LEVER DID NOT MOVE AND REMAINED IN THE "DRIVE" MODE BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE CRASH. THE "DRIVE" MODE IS NOW "REVERSE". I WAS TOLD BY THE ISUZU MECHANIC THAT THIS IS A COMMON IN TROOPERS AND RODEOS WITH ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS AND MOST PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT MY ECM IS IN THE "DEFAULT MODE" AND SENDING ERROR SIGNALS TO MY ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION. THE MECHANIC SAID THIS IS WHAT CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION TO RANDOMLY SHIFT OUT OF "DRIVE" INTO "REVERSE" WHILE TRAVELLING AT 50-55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE INFORMATION ON SIMILAR CRASHES INVILVING THE 1994-1998 ISUZU TROOPERS, RODEOS, HONDA PASSPORTS AND ACURA SLXS. SOME HAVE RESULTED IN INJURIES AND DEATHS. HOW MANY MUST DIE BEFORE ISUZU TAKES AN INTEREST IN THIS PROBLEM. I FOUND THAT THERE ARE MANY ISUZU OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THIER ECMS AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE OWNERS MANUAL WHICH WARNS CONSUMERS ABOUT THE POTENTIAL PROBLEMS THE ECM COULD CAUSE, NOR IS THERE INFORMATION ON SERVICING. THERE IS ONE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN REFERENCING AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE OF TROOPERS AND RODEOS, BUT IT DOESNT PROVIDE MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT EXACTLY WHIC COMPONENT IS AFFECTED. FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I was lucky enough to find a leftover one hidden on the dealership lot and bought it after a short test drive. It was a great move! I've already driven 156k miles and recently took a trip to Pennsylvania and back (350 miles) on just one tank of gas. I've only had to change the timing belt once at 80k miles (even though the manual recommends every 60k), a few bulbs, two batteries, and two sets of tires, and of course, about 10 oil changes in 8 years. Overall, I'm really happy with my car and would definitely recommend it to others!
-
I've been fortunate enough to have this vehicle since August 1995 and it has been a reliable companion. It handles snow and off-road conditions exceptionally well. While it may not be the smoothest ride for highway and city driving, it gets the job done. I primarily use my Trooper during the winter and to tow a utility trailer. During the spring, summer, and fall, it sits idle. At 79000 miles, I have only had to replace the front and rear brakes (rotors and pads), muffler, and flex pipe due to the harsh winter conditions in MA. Although it burns about a quart of oil every 3000 miles, I have never been too concerned as I change the oil every 3000 miles anyway. I am confident that I can get another 80000 miles out of it!
-
I can tell you really enjoy your car! It's great to hear that you haven't had any issues with it and that it's fun to drive.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Trooper! It's great to know that it still passes vehicle emissions with flying colors even after 10 years of use. Regular oil changes are so important for keeping a car running smoothly, and it sounds like you've done a great job taking care of it. While it may be a bit noisy on the highway, the 12-disc CD changer is a great feature to have. It's wonderful that you've been able to use it for family camping trips, hunting, and fishing - it sounds like it's been a reliable companion for many adventures. And how exciting that it may become your daughter's first car in a few years! It's always nice to see a vehicle passed down through the family. This is actually the second Trooper you've owned, which is a testament to how much you must love them. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!
-
I have owned this vehicle since it was new and have only needed to perform regular maintenance on it. Unfortunately, I did have to replace the starter and the rockers and rocker shafts at 101,000 miles, which cost me $1500 in parts. However, I have been informed that the rocker problem has been resolved by using harder metals (although this was not an issue with the DOHC engines). Overall, I believe that this vehicle has been an excellent value for me. It currently has 141,000 miles on it and still passes the State required emissions test with flying colours, performing just as well as a new vehicle. I am now preparing to let my second son start driving it, and I will definitely miss it.

You've done a great job maintaining your trooper! It's impressive that you've driven almost 90,000 miles without any major repairs. Regarding the oil burning issue, I'm not entirely sure what could be causing it. Have you considered taking it to a mechanic for a check-up?
Payton Deckow 2024-11-07
I really enjoy driving my trooper, it's definitely a beast with all of the options. However, it only gets 17 highway mpg, so I'm considering a hybrid for my next car.
Orin Barton 2024-09-02
We bought this vehicle brand new back in 1995 and have driven it for 66,000 miles. It has been pretty much trouble-free and works just as advertised. It may not be flashy, but it gets the job done. Off-road, it performs very well, but it can be a bit high and stiff on paved roads. Unfortunately, it has terrible gas mileage (13-19) even with a 5-speed. However, I absolutely love the low range, which allows you to crawl along in marginal conditions. Maintenance is easy - just change the oil and lubricants, and replace the spark plugs at 30k miles for a tune-up. The engine is decent, but it doesn't have a lot of torque and feels more like a car engine.
