2000 Isuzu Trooper problems

isuzu logo

The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.

In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.

The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

Common 2000 Isuzu Trooper problems

The Isuzu Trooper 2000 is known to have several common problems, primarily with its transmission, fuel system, electrical system, and engine. These issues are based on complaints from owners of this car.

  1. Transmission Problems: Many Trooper Limited owners reported experiencing problems with the transmission slipping or shifting roughly. These issues can be caused by a worn-out transmission, faulty transmission fluid, or a faulty transmission control module. Regular transmission inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues from occurring.
  2. Fuel System Problems: The Trooper Limited is known to have issues with the fuel system, particularly with the fuel gauge. Many owners reported experiencing problems with the fuel gauge, which would often read inaccurately. Additionally, some owners reported issues with the fuel pump, which could cause the vehicle to stall or fail to start. Regular fuel system inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues from occurring.
  3. Electrical Problems: Electrical issues are also a common problem with the Trooper Limited. Many owners reported problems with the power windows, locks, and other electrical components. These issues can be caused by a faulty electrical system or by wear and tear on the electrical components. Regular inspections and maintenance of the electrical system can help prevent these issues from occurring.
  4. Engine Overheating: Later models of the Isuzu Trooper, including the 2000 model, are known to experience engine overheating. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty cooling system, a damaged thermostat, or a malfunctioning radiator fan. Regular inspections and maintenance of the engine cooling system can help prevent engine overheating.
  5. Brake Problems: The Trooper S model is known to have brake problems, with many owners reporting experiencing soft or spongy brake pedals. This issue can be caused by worn-out brake pads, damaged brake lines, or a faulty master cylinder. Regular brake inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues from occurring.
  6. Suspension Problems: Many Trooper S owners reported experiencing a bouncy ride or difficulty controlling the vehicle on rough terrain. This issue can be caused by worn-out shocks, struts, or other suspension components. Regular suspension inspections and replacement of worn-out parts can help prevent these issues from occurring.
  7. Fuel Pump Failure: The Trooper's fuel pump is known to fail, causing the vehicle to stall or fail to start. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear on the fuel pump or a faulty fuel pump relay. Regular inspections and maintenance of the fuel system can help prevent fuel pump failure.
  8. Oil Leaks: The Trooper is known to have oil leaks, particularly from the front crankshaft oil seal. This issue can be caused by a faulty oil seal or a damaged oil pan. A revised design is available from Breakeryard to remedy this issue.
  9. Rattling from the Front of the Car: The Trooper is known to have a rattling sound coming from the front of the car, particularly from the timing chain tensioners. This issue can be caused by worn-out tensioners or a faulty timing chain. A replacement for the faulty part can be found on Breakeryard's parts list.
  10. Catalytic Converter Failure: The Trooper's catalytic converter is known to fail, causing the vehicle to lose power and the check engine light to illuminate. This issue cannot be repaired and requires replacement of the catalytic converter.
  11. Differential Leaks: The Trooper's differential is known to leak, causing oil to weep or leak out from underneath the vehicle. This issue can be caused by a damaged differential or a faulty seal. Replacement of the differential is required to resolve this issue.

In conclusion, the Isuzu Trooper 2000 is known to have several common problems, primarily with its transmission, fuel system, electrical system, and engine. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues from occurring, but some issues may require replacement of faulty parts. It is important to be aware of these common problems and to take steps to prevent or address them in order to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Why did Isuzu stop making the Trooper?

SUV market changes and safety concerns doomed the Trooper

Unfortunately for Isuzu, mid-size classics like the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav-4 essentially cornered that market before they could find footing with their oddly conceived Vehicross and other compact models.

How many miles per gallon does a 2000 Isuzu Trooper get?

It burns an occasional quart of oil and gets a combined 16 mpg. The 3.5L V6 engine has enough pep to zip along on the highway and can be shifted into ultra low gear off road.

  • VIN: JACDJ58X3Y7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: AFTER MAINTAINING OUR 2000 ISUZU TROOPER BY THE BOOK AND BEING FULLY AWARE OF THE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM, IT BLEW THE ENGINE AT 103000. I KEPT VERY GOOD DOCUMENTATION OF ALL THE REPAIRS- AND THERE WERE A LOT OF THEM, ISUZU IS NOT BACKING THEIR POWERTRAIN WARRANTY (120,000 MILES)BECAUSE THEY FOUND A WAY TO GET AWAY WITH IT BY SAYING BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE ACTUAL RECEIPTS FOR EVERY OIL CHANGE EVEN THOUGH I DID MANY MYSELF AND DOCUMENTED DATES AND MILEAGE, THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE. I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH WHICH WAS EASY BECAUSE ITS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM, BUT DIDN'T FIND MUCH ON ANY TROOPER OWNERS SATISFIED OR FAIRLY TREATED BY ISUZU. THE STICKER PRICE WAS $32,000 WHEN I PURCHASED IT IN 2000 I FULLY EXPECTED TO GET MORE THAN 103,000 OUT OF IT. IF ANYONE HAS ANY LUCK WITH THE SAME PROBLEM,PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND IN THE MEAN TIME IM GOING TO DO AS MUCH AS I CAN TO FIGHT THIS. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-07-01
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: VEHICLE USES EXCESSIVE OIL. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 3.6L IN 2000. CHECK THE ISUZU FORUM ONLINE. ON HIGHWAY TRIPS, USES 1 QUART EVERY 200 MILES. ON SHORTER TRIPS IN TOWN, CAN GO 500 TO 700 MILES BEFORE NEEDING A QUART. IT DOESN'T LEAK, AND DOESN'T BURN. THE PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY THE OIL NOT DRAINING DOWN AFTER BEING PUSHED ON TOP THE CYLINDERS. IT EVENTUALLY HAS TO BE BURNED, OR SENT THROUGH THE EXHAUST, PARTICULARLY ON LONG TRIPS. ON SHORTER TRIPS, YOU STOP BEFORE TO MUCH IS BURNED OFF OR PUSHED OUT, SO IT DRAINS BACK. THE OIL DRAIN BACK HOLES ARE TO SMALL AND TO FEW. I'M TOLD THERE ARE 4, BUT ON LATER ENGINES THERE ARE 10 PER CYLINDER. ISUZU SHOULD BE MADE TO OWN UP TO THE DESIGN PROBLEM AND FIX THE ENGINES. I BOUGHT MINE AT 22,000 MILES, AND NOW HAVE 100,000, AND IT HAS ALWAYS DONE THIS, BUT GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. *JB

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-12-02
  • VIN: JACDJ58XXY7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING HOME @ 12AM HAD ABOUT 76 MILES TO GO I HEARD A LITTLE BIT OF KNOCKING I WAS TRYING TO PULL OVER AND ALL OF A SUDDEN EVERYTHING SHUT DOWN AND LOCKED UP. I WAS STANDING ON THE BRAKES AND HANGING ON TO THE STEERING WHEEL TRYING TO GET ACROSS A LANE AND OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND COAST TO A SAFE AREA. WITH NO WARNING LIGHTS OR WARNING WHAT SO EVER MY VEHICLE'S ENGINE SEIZED AND IT WAS OVER THAT FAST. I HAVE MAINTAINED MY VEHICLE WITH OIL CHANGES AND NOW THEY ARE SAYING I HAD A SUDDEN LOSS OF OIL AND WAS LACKING LUBRICATION AND ROD # 1 BROKE AND # 6 IN WEDGED IN THE BLOCK AND SOMETHING ELSE. HELLO WHEN THEY TOOK THE ENGINE APART THERE WAS 2.5 QUARTS IN THE PAN AND THE REST ON THE ENGINE WHAT DO YOU MEAN LACK OF LUBRICATION. THEY SAID THIS WAS AN UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCE AND I HAVE TO COME UP WITH ABOUT 4500 TO FIX IT. GET THIS I BOUGHT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM HONDA CARE (APCO FOR THE USED VEHICLES) THEY SAID IT IS UNFORTUNATE THIS HAPPENED TO YOU BUT WE WILL NOT COVER IT! THIS IS A MYSTERY AND NO ONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT HAPPENED BUT I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINT ON MESSAGE BOARDS AND THIS IS NOT AN UNUSUAL PROBLEM. I DON'T RECOMMEND ISUZU TO ANYONE AFTER ALL I HAVE READ. ALSO HONDA CARE (APCO)FOR USED CARS THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO TELL YOU NO NOT THERE PROBLEM. SECOND TIME THEY WILL NOT COVER SOMETHING FOR ME. I PAID $1000 FOR THE WARRANTY AND ALL THEY CAN SAY IS SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS! THE DEALERSHIP IS TRYING AND TRYING TO GET THEM TO HONOR IT AND APCO WANTS WHAT THE DEFECTED PART THAT CAUSED FAILURE. NOBODY KNOWS! DEALERSHIP IS GREAT AND A VERY BIG DEALERSHIP @ THAT AND THEY SEEM TO CARE ABOUT ME AND MY SITUATION AND NOT JUST TELLING ME TO GO AWAY. GREAT PEOPLE 2ND CAR I GOT FROM THEM. DEALERSHIP WHO SELLS THIS EXTENDED WARRANTIES BELIEVE THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND FEEL IT SHOULD BE FIXED. *JB

JUST OUTSIDE BILLINGS, MT MY ENGINE MADE A LOUD BANGING SOUND FOLLOWED BY ENGINE POWER LOSS AND FINALLY THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH. ZERO OIL REGISTERED IN THE ENGINE. DIAGNOSED AS A SEIZED CRANK BY THE ISUZU DEALERSHIP. 70,100 MILES AND A SEIZED ENGINE OUT OF WARRANTY SINCE I BOUGHT THE TRUCK USED. $6,000 FOR A NEW ENGINE DOES NOT MAKE FISCAL SENSE GIVEN THE WHOLESALE VALUE OF TRUCK WAS $7500.*JB

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • VIN: JACDJ58X8Y7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN OCTOBER 2004. NOTICED IT WAS USING SOME OIL. I TOOK THE VEHICLE ON A 900 MILES TRIP AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. I KEPT TRACK OF ITS OIL LEVEL AND ON THE FINAL 200 MILES OF DRIVING IT USED ABOUT A 1/2 QUART OF OIL. THE TRUCK HAS 56,000 MILES ON IT AND IS IN OTHERWISE EXCELLENT CONDITION. I HAVE LOOKED AT OTHER SITES AND FOUND THIS TO BE A COMMON FLAW WITH THE 3.5 LITER MOTOR. I WOULD ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO WRITE TO THE NHTSA ABOUT THIS PROBLEM TO POSSIBLY HAVE THIS REMEDIED. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-11-24
  • VIN: JACDJ58XXY7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I PUCHASED MY 2000 ISUZU TROOPER IN FEBRUARY 2004 WITH 36,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE. SINCE THEN I HAVE CHANGED MY OWN OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES RELIGIOUSLY. I HAVE EITHER CHANGED AT MY WORK (A LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP) OR AT MY OWN HOME.*AK THE LAST TIME I CHANGED MY OIL WAS 2 MONTHS AGO (9/25/04) AT 47900 MILES AND ON (11/24/04) WITH 49800 MILES THE OIL LIGHT FLASHED AT ME WHEN I CAME TO A STOP ABOUT A BLOCK FROM MY HOME THEN WENT OUT. ONCE I GOT HOME I CHECKED THE OIL AND IT DID NOT REGISTER ON THE DIPSTICK AT ALL. I STARTED TO POUR IN OIL IT TOOK ALL OF 4 QUARTS OF OIL TO FILL IT FULL. THIS IS AN ON GOING PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE BEING I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO KEEP RECORD OF IT AS I WAS ADVISED BY A REPAIR SHOP MONTHS AGO WHEN I FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED IT. I BELIEVE BY NOW I AM OVER THE 60 MONTH WARRANTY PER ISUZU BUT I WILL CHECK ON THAT (11/26/04), BUT I ALSO HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THROUGH HERITAGE THAT I PURCHASED WITH THE TROOPER. I AM PROBABLY ONE OF THE FEW THAT MAY GET THIS TAKEN CARE OF ON SOMEONE ELSE'S DIME. BUT I PERSONALLY KNOW THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM BY THE MANUFACTURER AND THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH THIS SAME TYPE OF VEHICLE WITH THIS PROBLEM AS I HAVE SEEN ON THE INTERNET. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TYPE "OIL CONSUMPTION 2000 ISUZU TROOPER" AND HAVE FUN, IT WILL KEEP YOU BUSY ALL DAY. I BELIEVE THE MANUFACTURE SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-08-10
  • VIN: JACDJ58X8Y7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: 2000 ISUZU TROOPER WITH 71,000 MILES. EXCESSIVE OIL LOST. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE ALWAYS CHANGED THE OIL AT 3000 MILES. THERE ARE NO OIL LEAKS. YESTERDAY THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND I ADDED 4 QUARTS. THIS BROUGHT THE OIL LEVEL TO THE "ADD 1 QUART MARK". IN 3000 MILES MY TROOPER CONSUMED 5 QUARTS OF OIL. I NOW HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE ... $7400. I HAVE SPOKEN TO SEVERAL MECHANICS AND HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THE WEB AND HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST A RECALL TO HOLD ISUZU RESPONSIBLE FOR A DEFECTIVE DESIGN. *JB

Negative 2000 Isuzu Trooper car reviews

  1. Cristian Halvorson 2024-10-12

Great value! I love the comfort and design. This is actually the third Trooper we have owned and it has always been a very dependable ride. The only thing that could be improved is the interior, which is a bit sparse. It would be great if the Trooper could be spiced-up and made a little more luxurious. Additionally, the ride could be smoother and more car-like. Overall, though, it is still the best value on the road!

I purchased a new SUV and took great care of it. However, within the first year, I had to replace the oxygen sensor twice. Unfortunately, at 57k miles, the transmission unexpectedly failed while I was driving. Despite this, I have been impressed with the spacious cargo area and have been able to haul a lot of items inside. While the suspension is poor and there are no available options for improvement, I did try to upgrade the standard shocks, but unfortunately, no others are manufactured. Overall, the SUV has been reliable except for the transmission issue.

I purchased my vehicle with only 8K miles in '01 and initially had a positive experience. However, at 58K miles, the engine threw a rod and was destroyed. Fortunately, Isuzu provided excellent customer service and replaced the engine under warranty, although it did take 3 months for the replacement. Unfortunately, during the interim period, I had to purchase another vehicle to fill the void. After the engine was replaced, the engine management system failed at 62K miles, which was not covered under warranty. In comparison to my old '86 Trooper II, the quality of build was lacking. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this vehicle.

Positive 2000 Isuzu Trooper car reviews

The vehicle has been performing well overall. However, there has been an intermittent issue with the computer performance module, which has required reprogramming three times. When the issue arises, the vehicle tends to buck and idle roughly when cold.

Hey there! You've got yourself a real utility + sport car!

  3. Dameon Barrows 2024-11-08

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I bought this car new and put 91,000 miles on it. I replaced the tires, brakes and battery and I'm very pleased with how it's running.

  4. Cristian Heidenreich 2024-10-02

I've been really happy with this vehicle.

  5. Abner Zboncak 2024-09-10

I'm so happy with my Trooper! Although I couldn't afford the $35K asking price for the new Tahoes, I ended up getting the Trooper for $10K less, including tax and tags. It weighs 1200 lbs more than my Blazer, but it has superior pickup and its 230 hp outruns any truck with less than 8 cylinders. The AC could be a little better on sweltering afternoons and the gas mileage is not great, but overall it's an excellent truck and I'm glad I bought it.
