Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.
In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.
The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

Common Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper, a popular 4x4 vehicle, has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Engine Oil Light Illuminated: If the engine oil warning light is lit after filling up the oil levels, it's likely that there's a leak in the differential. This issue tends to happen around the 55,000-mile point, and the differential will need to be replaced.
- Excessive Fuel Use: When the car uses significantly more fuel than usual and often has starting problems, it's likely that the fuel pump is either on the way out or already broken. Replacement of the fuel pump is necessary to resolve this issue.
- Rough Idling: Rough idling on the Trooper is usually the result of a damaged intake manifold gasket. This issue can be resolved by replacing the gasket, which is relatively straightforward.
- Ticking From Valve Train: A ticking sound coming from the engine valve train area is likely due to varnish build-up in the hydraulic lash adjusters. Using a higher quality oil can help resolve this problem.
- Oil Leak: A faulty front crankshaft oil seal is the most likely cause of oil leaks in the Trooper. A revised design is available from Breakeryard to remedy this issue.
- Rattling From Front of the Car: This issue is caused by the timing chain tensioners wearing out faster than in other cars. Replacement of the tensioner can resolve this problem.
- Power Loss: Power loss in the Trooper is most likely due to a faulty catalytic converter. Replacement of the catalytic converter is necessary to resolve this issue.
- 4WD Indicator: If the 4WD indicator stays on even when in 2WD, it's likely that there's a fault in the vacuum hoses, solenoids, or engine valves. Replacement of the faulty part is necessary to resolve this issue.
- Differential Leaking: Oil weeping or leaking out from between the two rear wheels where the axle meets the prop shaft is caused by the differential leaking. Replacement of the differential is necessary to resolve this issue.
- Fuel pump failure: Starting problems and higher than usual fuel consumption can be signs of a failing fuel pump. Replacement of the fuel pump is necessary to resolve this issue.
While these issues are common, the Isuzu Trooper has above-average reliability levels, according to Warranty Direct figures. However, when things do go wrong, the fuel system, engine, and brakes are the most likely culprits.
Why did Isuzu stop making the Trooper?
Eventually, middling popularity and Isuzu's burgeoning partnership with General Motors led to the Trooper's demise in 2002, replaced by the smaller and stranger Isuzu Axiom, and eventually the Ascender.

- Summary: 22 YEARS AGO, ON FEB. 22, 1995 I WAS DRIVING DOWN SILVERADO CANYON RD., WHICH IS A VERY CURVY 2 LANE ROAD. AFTER A CURVE I SAW 2 CARS DRIVING TOWARDS ME, ONE PASSING THE OTHER, COMING TOWARDS ME IN MY LANE. I DID THE ONLY THING I COULD AND MOVED ~5-7 FEET TOWARDS THE RIGHT AND FLIPPED OVER IN A COUNTER-CLOCKWISE DIRECTION. MY TRUCK DID NOT HAVE TAKATA AIRBAGS (SO THEY TOLD ME) BUT MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. WHEN I TOLD THIS TO THE ISUZU SPOKESPERSON (2-3 YRS LATER) HE TOLD ME THAT NO CAR'S AIRBAGS DEPLOY IN ROLLOVERS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT PROGRAMMED TO DO SO. WHEN I ASKED WHY HE SAID THAT IN STUDIES THAT WERE DONE THERE WASN'T ANY INCREASE IN SURVIVAL IN ROLLOVERS EITHER WITH OR WITHOUT DEPLOYMENT OF AIRBAGS. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW I FELT. WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO DO SURVIVE? WHAT ABOUT ME AND EVERYONE ELSE IN A LEFT HANDED (COUNTERCLOCKWISE) ROLL. I KNOW BECAUSE I WAS IN A CLOCKWISE ROLL TOO AND MY HEAD STAYED STRAIGHT UP AND I SURVIVED BETTER. IN A LEFT ROLL THE DRIVER'S HEAD HITS THE WINDOW AND THEY OFTEN DON'T SURVIVE. IF THEY DO THEY WILL HAVE A SEVERE TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AND ARE USUALLY DISABLED FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. I WAS IN A COMA FOR TWO WEEKS AND SPENT TWO YEARS IN NEUROREHABILITATION. I WISH I WAS ABLE TO WRITE THIS TO YOU MUCH SOONER BUT PLEASE WHEN THE NEW AIRBAGS COME IN, MAKE SURE THEY DEPLOY IN ROLLOVERS TOO. I HOPE THIS LETTER MAKES UP FOR THE PEOPLE WHO DIED IN ROLLOVERS IN THE PAST TWENTY YEARS. YOU SEE I'M A MEDICAL DOCTOR WHO HOPES TO SEE SOME GOOD COME OUT OF MY SURVIVING THAT TERRIBLE CAR ACCIDENT. EVEN MY INSURANCE, STATE FARM SAID I WAS IN A SINGLE CAR ACCIDENT WHEN I SAW WHITE AND RED PAINT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY GREEN ISUZU TROOPER. I WISH I COULD HAVE WRITTEN THIS SOONER BUT I HAVE MANY LONG TERM MALADIES THAT CAUSED ME TO KEEP FORGETTING. MAYBE GOD REMINDED ME TO WRITE WHEN THE TAKATA RECALL WAS GOING ON. THEY'RE IN MILLIONS OF CAR

Hi there! It's great to hear that you're a fan of the Trooper! I can tell that you really take care of your vehicles, and it's impressive that your '86 model has lasted so long. Your '98 Trooper sounds like it's still in great shape after all these years, which is a testament to its quality and reliability. It's good to know that you've made some upgrades to improve the ride, and it's great that you haven't had too many issues with it. It's a shame that the Trooper is no longer in production, but it's clear that it's left a lasting impression on you. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Hi there! I purchased this car back in '98 and have taken great care of it, just like my previous truck that I loved before it was hit by someone. While the AC doesn't quite cut it during the hot summers here in the southwest, it would be perfect for milder climates. When the temperature rises above 100, I usually just roll down the windows! I have noticed that I'm losing about 2 quarts of fluid per month, and the interior carpeting could have been installed better. Additionally, the window tracks are a bit weak and the cupholders, especially the rear ones, could use some improvement. Unfortunately, the magnet latch always seems to break. Overall, it's been a reliable car and I've enjoyed driving it. Thanks for reading!

I bought my Trooper brand new in '96 when the big Trooper rollover scare was going around, hence I got a great deal. Let me tell you, I have not been able to get the tires off the ground, let alone roll it over, and it has gone around some sharp corners pretty fast both on and off-road. It has great towing capacity. I started a business with my Trooper pulling heavy loads of concrete and lumber, and at 70,000 miles, I still have the original brakes. The only problem I have had was at 50,000 miles when I had a valve cover leak, but it was fixed under warranty.

I love this SUV! It's amazing that it has over 105,000 miles and I've only had to replace the starter. I've taken it off-road through rivers and over mountains, and it handles everything like a champ. Plus, it can pull a 25-foot Aerolite trailer without breaking a sweat. I'm definitely going to buy another one when this one finally wears out - maybe in another 10 years!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my SUV. I bought it used back in 2007 in WI for $8K with 75K miles on it. Now, after 140K miles, I'm hoping to make it to 250K! Recently, I had to replace the starter and timing belt, but overall, it's been a great ride. The truck-like capability makes it easy to handle any snow bank or towing job. Plus, the huge cargo area is perfect for my two dogs and frequent trips to Home Depot. It's also well-appointed with a massive sunroof, 6-CD changer, TOD, and heated rearview mirrors. The only downside is that I have to change the oil every 3K miles and it only gets 15 MPG. But, it doesn't burn oil, it just drinks a lot! It's a bit top-heavy, but the timeless exterior styling and one small repairable rust spot on the back door make up for it. Overall, I've been very pleased with my SUV. It's a reliable workhorse and perfect for winter states, boat or

I purchased my 1994 Trooper from a gentleman who had bought it brand new and had taken great care of it. It had 150,000 miles on it, but had a new transmission installed at 90k and had undergone regular maintenance, which was all documented. Although I had originally been looking for a newer SUV, after taking it for a test drive and seeing the price, I knew I had to have it. We even took it off-road in Death Valley not long after purchasing it, and it performed admirably. Despite being a luxury-oriented SUV, the LS model is quite rugged. It also gets decent gas mileage on the freeway, averaging around 20mpg. However, in stop-and-go traffic in LA, it only gets around 8mpg, which is a far cry from the reported 14+mpg. The Trooper can struggle a bit on hills, but with some careful driving techniques, it can make it up them.

I've also experienced some issues with the Transmission and my mileage is quite low. The RPMs tend to go crazy and I've had some trouble with braking. Sometimes, I find that turning off the car and restarting it can fix the problem. Unfortunately, I've found that the driver's seat doesn't go all the way back, which can be a bit of an issue for me as I'm only 5'4

I love this vehicle, but I have been experiencing a problem that no one has been able to solve. The front end power train seems to bind up, especially when backing out of parking spaces with the wheels turned. I have had it looked at several times, but no mechanic has been able to confirm my suspicion that it could be the CV joints. Other than that, it has been a good vehicle, and I would consider buying another one.

Hello there! I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing vehicle. I purchased the 96 model back in 2007 to haul my horse trailer and it has been a reliable companion ever since. Despite being put through some tough times, it has never failed me. I have even taken it off-road and it outperforms any other vehicle out there. It handles the harsh Michigan winters like a champ and has never gotten stuck. I bought it with 170k miles on it and now it has about 214k, and I haven't had to replace anything that wasn't due to my harsh off-roading. I even use the v6 3.2 litre to pull my dad's 7000 lb crestliner, and while it may spit and sputter, once you put it in power mode, it controls the boat rather nicely. I highly recommend this truck, it will last you a lifetime!

I bought my Trooper new in April 03 and have loved the experience. However, I have had to replace the transmission at least 3 times. Since they put a rebuilt transmission in each time, the dealer said that you never know how the quality would be. Luckily, I've had the warranty and will definitely get rid of the truck when it hits 120,000 miles, although I would have preferred to keep it longer. I also don't like the way it burns oil.
