Isuzu Trooper problems

isuzu logo

The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.

In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.

The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

Common Isuzu Trooper problems

The Isuzu Trooper, a popular 4x4 vehicle, has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Engine Oil Light Illuminated: If the engine oil warning light is lit after filling up the oil levels, it's likely that there's a leak in the differential. This issue tends to happen around the 55,000-mile point, and the differential will need to be replaced.
  • Excessive Fuel Use: When the car uses significantly more fuel than usual and often has starting problems, it's likely that the fuel pump is either on the way out or already broken. Replacement of the fuel pump is necessary to resolve this issue.
  • Rough Idling: Rough idling on the Trooper is usually the result of a damaged intake manifold gasket. This issue can be resolved by replacing the gasket, which is relatively straightforward.
  • Ticking From Valve Train: A ticking sound coming from the engine valve train area is likely due to varnish build-up in the hydraulic lash adjusters. Using a higher quality oil can help resolve this problem.
  • Oil Leak: A faulty front crankshaft oil seal is the most likely cause of oil leaks in the Trooper. A revised design is available from Breakeryard to remedy this issue.
  • Rattling From Front of the Car: This issue is caused by the timing chain tensioners wearing out faster than in other cars. Replacement of the tensioner can resolve this problem.
  • Power Loss: Power loss in the Trooper is most likely due to a faulty catalytic converter. Replacement of the catalytic converter is necessary to resolve this issue.
  • 4WD Indicator: If the 4WD indicator stays on even when in 2WD, it's likely that there's a fault in the vacuum hoses, solenoids, or engine valves. Replacement of the faulty part is necessary to resolve this issue.
  • Differential Leaking: Oil weeping or leaking out from between the two rear wheels where the axle meets the prop shaft is caused by the differential leaking. Replacement of the differential is necessary to resolve this issue.
  • Fuel pump failure: Starting problems and higher than usual fuel consumption can be signs of a failing fuel pump. Replacement of the fuel pump is necessary to resolve this issue.

While these issues are common, the Isuzu Trooper has above-average reliability levels, according to Warranty Direct figures. However, when things do go wrong, the fuel system, engine, and brakes are the most likely culprits.

  • Summary: 22 YEARS AGO, ON FEB. 22, 1995 I WAS DRIVING DOWN SILVERADO CANYON RD., WHICH IS A VERY CURVY 2 LANE ROAD. AFTER A CURVE I SAW 2 CARS DRIVING TOWARDS ME, ONE PASSING THE OTHER, COMING TOWARDS ME IN MY LANE. I DID THE ONLY THING I COULD AND MOVED ~5-7 FEET TOWARDS THE RIGHT AND FLIPPED OVER IN A COUNTER-CLOCKWISE DIRECTION. MY TRUCK DID NOT HAVE TAKATA AIRBAGS (SO THEY TOLD ME) BUT MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. WHEN I TOLD THIS TO THE ISUZU SPOKESPERSON (2-3 YRS LATER) HE TOLD ME THAT NO CAR'S AIRBAGS DEPLOY IN ROLLOVERS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT PROGRAMMED TO DO SO. WHEN I ASKED WHY HE SAID THAT IN STUDIES THAT WERE DONE THERE WASN'T ANY INCREASE IN SURVIVAL IN ROLLOVERS EITHER WITH OR WITHOUT DEPLOYMENT OF AIRBAGS. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW I FELT. WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO DO SURVIVE? WHAT ABOUT ME AND EVERYONE ELSE IN A LEFT HANDED (COUNTERCLOCKWISE) ROLL. I KNOW BECAUSE I WAS IN A CLOCKWISE ROLL TOO AND MY HEAD STAYED STRAIGHT UP AND I SURVIVED BETTER. IN A LEFT ROLL THE DRIVER'S HEAD HITS THE WINDOW AND THEY OFTEN DON'T SURVIVE. IF THEY DO THEY WILL HAVE A SEVERE TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AND ARE USUALLY DISABLED FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. I WAS IN A COMA FOR TWO WEEKS AND SPENT TWO YEARS IN NEUROREHABILITATION. I WISH I WAS ABLE TO WRITE THIS TO YOU MUCH SOONER BUT PLEASE WHEN THE NEW AIRBAGS COME IN, MAKE SURE THEY DEPLOY IN ROLLOVERS TOO. I HOPE THIS LETTER MAKES UP FOR THE PEOPLE WHO DIED IN ROLLOVERS IN THE PAST TWENTY YEARS. YOU SEE I'M A MEDICAL DOCTOR WHO HOPES TO SEE SOME GOOD COME OUT OF MY SURVIVING THAT TERRIBLE CAR ACCIDENT. EVEN MY INSURANCE, STATE FARM SAID I WAS IN A SINGLE CAR ACCIDENT WHEN I SAW WHITE AND RED PAINT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY GREEN ISUZU TROOPER. I WISH I COULD HAVE WRITTEN THIS SOONER BUT I HAVE MANY LONG TERM MALADIES THAT CAUSED ME TO KEEP FORGETTING. MAYBE GOD REMINDED ME TO WRITE WHEN THE TAKATA RECALL WAS GOING ON. THEY'RE IN MILLIONS OF CAR

Latest negative Isuzu Trooper car reviews

  1. Vincenzo Heathcote 2025-08-20

    Vehicle year: 1990

Congratulations on selling your 1990 Trooper with 171,000 miles on it! I understand that it was a tough decision to make, but I'm glad you were able to do it for monetary reasons. It sounds like you had a great experience with your Trooper, and I'm sure you'll find another one just as good someday. The Trooper is truly unstoppable in snow and it's great to hear that you never had any problems with it. Although the gas mileage wasn't great, it's wonderful that you didn't have to make any payments on it. The driving position and comfortable seats made it an all-around fun car to own and drive. It's clear that you have a lot of love for the Trooper, and I'm sure many others feel the same way. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Damon Lakin 2025-08-20

    Vehicle year: 1999

I bought my Trooper when it had 72,000 miles on it and immediately had the transmission flushed and serviced. Throughout its life, I changed the oil every 3,000 miles and used Valvoline Max Life. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the vehicle. The transmission failed at around 135,000 miles, and I'm not sure why, despite taking very good care of it. Additionally, I had some problems with the vacuum 4 wheel drive system, which cost me a lot of money. The AC also stopped working at 85,000 miles. When the transmission failed, the rear struts were shot, and there was a big hole in the exhaust system just behind the caddy. Since Isuzu discontinued their automotive line, part prices have gone up significantly.

  3. Sterling Schultz 2025-08-19

    Vehicle year: 1999

I'm really happy with our choice! We needed a family vehicle that could handle our active lifestyle, including trips to the Washington mountains, logging roads, snow, camping trips, and keeping up with 04 Rangers, Tacomas, Jeeps, and Z71's. We've been able to go where others can't, and we're usually leading the pack. I added some BF All Terrains and it was a great move. I'm planning to put on some Rancho this summer. Yes, I do have to add oil every 1500 miles, but it just makes me stay on top of oil changes. The vehicle has excellent off-road ability and we've climbed some challenging hills without any issues. We've had a lot of fun with it!

Hi there! I am the original owner of this vehicle and it has served me well with 196,000 miles on it. I have had to replace the starter a few times, which seems to be a common issue among other owners as well. It can be a bit tricky to replace, as it requires dropping the crossmember. I have also found that filling the transmission fluid can be a bit of a challenge, as there is no dipstick and it can be hard to access. However, with proper maintenance such as replacing the transmission filter, it will continue to run smoothly. While it may not be the most powerful vehicle and the fuel efficiency could be better, it performs great in 4wd with studs during the winter months. Overall, I have had a positive experience with this vehicle and recommend keeping up with regular maintenance to ensure it continues to perform well.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Trooper. I bought it back in 2005 with 53K miles on it after doing some research for value. While I wish I had checked reliability as well, I figured it was Japanese so it must be good! However, I did notice that the 3.5 six cylinder engine consumes quite a bit of oil - as much as a quart per week. I had to replace the EGR valve at 70K miles due to burning all that oil, which cost me around $1000. Recently, I had to replace the shocks for $280, and just last night at 81K miles, the starter failed which cost me $670. Despite these issues, I have to say that it handles great in the snow and has plenty of room for scuba gear for 4 people with 8 tanks. I plan on driving it until it falls apart since the resale value isn't great. Thanks for listening!

This is a truck and it's built like all trucks should be. It's been used for work commutes and as a family vehicle. In the past, there were some issues with both front passenger windows coming off track when trying to put them down while frozen, and an AC leak in 2000. However, these were easily fixed. There were also two CD players replaced in 2001. For maintenance, the oil is changed every 10,000 miles or so, and there have been four batteries, four sets of tires, and two exhaust systems from the cat on back. Additionally, there have been four, maybe five, sets of brake pads, and the timing belt was replaced at 75k as recommended. The biggest repairs were in 2011, when the alternator, four rotors, pads, and two rear calipers were replaced. However, the motor, AT, driveline components, suspension/steering components, plugs, wires, cooling, power steering system, electrical, and body hardware have never been touched.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love my 1996 Trooper! It's actually my second Trooper - we bought our first one brand new in 1991 and drove it until we got this one in 1999. This vehicle has been amazing - it has great acceleration and is extremely comfortable and roomy. We recently had to replace the power steering hose, but other than that, it's been maintenance free. It's actually my third vehicle, and I have to say, I love driving it even more than my Mercedes wagon. I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off! Thanks for listening to me gush about my Trooper.

We purchased this 2000 Limited 4WD Trooper in May 2021 with 127K miles from Ferguson in Broken Arrow, OK for $7K. The service we received from the dealer was exceptional. We had it shipped to AL and it arrived in just 2 days on a carrier truck. The two-tone paint scheme is stunning, and the tires, spare, and everything else were in good condition. Since then, we have put about 2,500 miles on it and made a few upgrades, including changing the rear springs (OME-EMU), bump stops, Monroe shocks, starter, battery, and front windshield. This is a grand vehicle with power, room, comfort, and style. Trooper Sports Wagons are great to own and drive. Sure, they drive like a truck, use oil (3.5L V6), and need a little TLC on occasion, but if you can find one with relatively low miles in good shape, you will enjoy the ride. We have started using Castrol synthetic 5W-30, and oil use is 1qt. per 2k miles. The best gas mileage we have achieved is driving between 60-65 (17mpg) on a 90-mile trip. Around town, we get about 14mpg. There is really nothing like a Trooper. It's hard to explain, much like giving one's heart to Jesus; you have to experience it to understand it. Happy Trails!

You have over 220,000 miles on your '93 Trooper and it still seems to be going strong. That's great to hear!

This truck is both comfortable and fun to drive. You can take it on the highway or through a sand pit with ease. Its reliability is truly amazing, and the interior is spacious and comfortable.
