2001 Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.
In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.
The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

Common 2001 Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper, produced from 1992 to 2002, is known for its luxurious features and off-road capabilities. However, there are several common problems that owners of this vehicle have reported, particularly with the Trooper Limited and Trooper LS models.
One common issue with the Trooper Limited is with the transmission. Many owners have reported experiencing problems with the transmission slipping or shifting roughly. These issues can be caused by a worn-out transmission, faulty transmission fluid, or a faulty transmission control module. Regular transmission inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues from occurring.
Another issue with the Trooper Limited is with the fuel system. Many owners have reported experiencing problems with the fuel gauge, which often reads inaccurately. Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the fuel pump, which can cause the vehicle to stall or fail to start. Regular fuel system inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues from occurring.
Electrical issues are also a common problem with the Trooper Limited. Many owners have reported problems with the power windows, locks, and other electrical components. These issues can be caused by a faulty electrical system or by wear and tear on the electrical components. Regular inspections and maintenance of the electrical system can help prevent these issues from occurring.
Other issues that owners of the Trooper Limited and Trooper LS may encounter include problems with the suspension, braking system, and air conditioning system. Regular maintenance and care, including suspension inspections, brake inspections, and A/C system inspections, can help prevent these issues from occurring.
In addition to these common issues, there have been two recalls on the Trooper, but both affect only the diesel models. The first concerned possible fires caused by the ceramic heater terminal, and the second was a result of problems with the fuel injectors.
According to figures from Warranty Direct, the Trooper is one of the better 4x4s, with reliability levels above average. However, when things do go wrong, there are three usual suspects - the fuel system, engine, and brakes. Failed fuel injectors can be costly to fix, problems with the gearbox are not uncommon, and the steering can wear rapidly if the car is used for towing.
Despite these issues, the Trooper remains a popular choice among off-road enthusiasts and collectors. With regular maintenance and care, these vehicles can provide years of reliable service. It is important to be aware of the specific issues that are common with this model and to take steps to prevent or address them in order to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
Why did Isuzu stop making the Trooper?
SUV market changes and safety concerns doomed the Trooper
Unfortunately for Isuzu, mid-size classics like the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav-4 essentially cornered that market before they could find footing with their oddly conceived Vehicross and other compact models.

- Summary: The contact owns a 2001 Isuzu Trooper. The contact stated while entering and starting the vehicle, he noticed an extreme heat in the interior of the vehicle coming from the engine. The contact proceeded to shift the gear into drive however, while his foot was still on the brake pedal the vehicle independently accelerated. The contact had to pulled up the parking brake to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure recurred several times afterwards. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the failure as a bypass for the fuel line and brake line failure that needed to be replaced however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause for the heat entering the vehicle from the engine. The mechanic was able repair the vehicle however, the contact was concerned that the heat coming from the engine would eventually destroy the engine and the vehicle would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 101,000.

- Summary: MY SUV , ISUZU TROOPER OF 10YEARS, WAS PARKED IN A LIBRARY PARKING GARAGE AND AFTER IGNITION TURNED ON, I PUT IT IN REVERSE GEAR TO GET OUT OF THE PARKING LOT AND THE CAR RAPIDLY REVERSED AND BEFORE I COULD FIGURE OUT AND REACT, THE CAR SHOT LIKE A ROCKET TOWARDS THE FRONT , WHILE STILL IN REVERSE GEAR, AND I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE BRAKES OR STEERING WHEEL, IT RAMMED INTO A CONCRETE PILLAR AND GOT COMPLETELY TOTALED. AIRBAGS OPENED AND FRONT DOORS JAMMED AND I HAD SLIDE TO THE BACK TO ESCAPE. LUCKILY, CAR DID NOT CATCH ON FIRE OR EXPLODE. ( POLICE REPORT VERIFY THAT AFTER CRASH, CAR STILL FOUND TO BE IN REVERSE GEAR AND SUPRISED HOW CAR MOVED TOWARDS THE FRONT). A WEEK AGO, PRIOR TO THIS FREAKY CRASH, ( LUCKILY NO MINORS, SENIORS, HOMELESS WHO USUALLY WALK IN THE PARKING LOT WERE NOT PRESENT, OTHERWISE, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE DEATHS) MY CAR DEALERSHIP HAD DONE WORK ON MY CAR FOR NEARLY $1000.00. AND THEY REPLACED MODE SWITCH FOR MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ( THERMOSTAT CHANGED; PISTON COVER CHANGED) AND DON'T KNOW WHAT ROLE IT PLAYED IN MY CAR'S CRASH. I AM PRETTY SURE ITS A MALFUNCTION . IT NEEDS TO BE ASSESSED AND FIGURED WHAT ROLE THE ABOVE INSTALLATION PLAYED IN THE CRASH WHICH COULD HAVE HAD DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES. WAS IT DUE TO DEFECTIVE PART? INSURANCE COMPANY BLAMES IT ON ME AND SAY MY PREMIUMS WILL BE HIGHER SINCE ITS AT FAULT ACCIDENT DESPITE HEARING MY EXPERIENCE AND WITH EVIDENCE OF POLICE REPORT WHICH STATES THAT MY GEAR WAS STILL IN REVERSE. ( AFTER CRASHING HEAD ON AGAINST A CONCRETE PILLAR) THANK YOU FOR KEEPING PUBLIC SAFETY FIRST!

- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: WE HAVE HAD TO ADD 1-2 QTS OF OIL EVERY COUPLE THOUSAND MILES ALTHOUGH WE DID NOT SEE AN OIL LEAK (NO MARKS ON THE DRIVEWAY) MECHANIC COULD FIND NO OIL LEAK OR PROBLEM OUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON,AND MECHANIC SAID WE NEEDED EMISSIONS SENSOR REPLACED. WE DID REPLACE IT. ON OUR WAY TO THANKSGIVING IN OKLAHOMA FROM MICHIGAN OUR ENGINE BLEW ! WE ARE NOW WITHOUT THAT VEHICLE BUT STILL MAKING PAYMENTS. A DEALERSHIP IN TULSA SAID THAT THOSE ENGINES ARE REPLACED A LOT AT HIS SHOP DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. HE SAID THAT THERE IS CARBON BUILD UP IN THE VALVE THAT GOES TO THE ENGINE CAUSING THE OIL TO BURN UP. AFTER SO LONG OF IT BEING BUILT UP IT GETS CLOGGED AND ENDS UP BLOWING. HE SAID IF WE HAD BEEN TAKING THE CAR TO AN ISUZU DEALER TO GET THE OIL CHANGED THEY KNOW ABOUT IT AND CAN CLEAN IT. PROBLEM FOR US IS THERE ISN'T AN ISUZU DEALER IN THE CITY WE LIVE IN SO WE DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE. I BELIEVE ISUZU SHOULD HAVE SENT A LETTER TO TROOPER OWNERS NOTIFYING THEM OF THIS DEFECT SO AS NOT TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS PROBLEM SINCE IT CAN BE AVOIDED. *JB

- Summary: I OWN A 2001 ISUZU TROOPER THAT STARTED USING EXCESSIVE OIL (1+ QUARTS EVERY 1000 MILES) AT 54,000 MILES. I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS STARTING WHEN ISUZU INTRODUCED THE 3.5L V6 ENGINE. MY RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THE PROBLEM TO BE A BAD DESIGN CHANGE OF THE OIL RING NOT ALLOWING OIL TO DRAIN PROPERLY. ISUZU IS TERRIBLE TO WORK WITH AND FIGHTS TO NOT HONOR WARRANTIES. WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN INVESTIGATED BY NHTSA AFTER ALL THE COMPLAINTS RECEIVED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM? ISUZU HAS TERRIBLE CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR VEHICLES WHEN THERE IS A PROBLEM. STILL BATTLING WITH ISUZU AND BBB.*JB

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-04-24
- VIN: JACDJ58X817

- Summary: I BOUGHT MY NEW AUTOMOBILE ON THE 24TH OF JUNE 2001. ON APRIL 24, 2004 THE TROOPER BROKE DOWN AND I HAD IT TOWED TO SHEEHY CHEVROLET DODGE ISUZU DEALERSHIP. BEFORE THE TRUCK BROKE DOWN THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT AND ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. AT THIS TIME THE TRUCK HAD 56,680 MILES ON IT. I PICKED THE TRUCK UP ON APRIL 28, 2004 FROM THE SHEEHY DEALERSHIP. I PAID SHEEHY $173.22 FOR THE REPAIRS THEY MADE AND RENTED A CAR WHICH COST ME $175.61. ON MAY 3, 2004 I TOOK THE TRUCK TO LINDSAY CHEVROLET TO BE REPAIRED BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT HAD COME ON AND THE TRUCK FELT LIKE IT WAS ABOUT TO BRAKE DOWN AGAIN. AT THIS TIME THE TRUCK HAD 56,777 MILES ON IT. ON MAY 11 2004 I TOOK THE TRUCK TO BROWN''S BUICK AND ISUZU DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT HAD COME ON AGAIN. AT THIS TIME THE TRUCK HAD 57,140 MILES ON IT. THIS TIME THE REPAIR WORK COST ME $584.32. ON JULY 22, 2004, I TOOK THE TRUCK IN FOR A OIL CHANGE AND TOLD THE SERVICE CONSULTANT ABOUT THE TRUCK NOT RUNNING RIGHT. NEAR THE END OF 2004 ( NOT SURE OF THE EXACT DATES) I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO THE BROWN''S DEALERSHIP. THE BROWN''S DEALERSHIP HAD TO ORDER A TRANSMISSION. IT TOOK NEARLY A MONTH FOR THEM TO GET THE TRANSMISSION AND REPAIR THE TRUCK. SO I HAD TO RENEDT A CAR. JULY 5, 2005, I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED BACK TO BROWNS BECAUSE THE PAST PROBLEMS WERE HAPPENING AGAIN. BROWN''S DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION ONCE MORE. I PICKED THE TRUCK UP ABOUT CLOSING TIME ON THE 14TH OF JULY 2005. AS I WAS DRIVING HOME I EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEMS AGAIN. ON JULY 18, 2005, I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED BACK TO BROWNS. AT THIS TIME THE TRUCK HAS AROUND 76,000 MILES ON IT. JULY 20, 2005, MAX HAHNE, THE SERVICE CONSULTANT CALLED ME AND SAID ANOTHER TRANSMISSION IS ON ORDER BECAUSE OF INTERNAL FAILURE IN THE TRANSMISSION. SO MY TRUCK IS AT THE DEALERSHIP WAITING TO BE FIXED AGAIN. SHOULD THE ISUZU CORPORATION OR THE DEALERSHIP REIMBURSE ME FOR RENTAL CAR EXPENSES AND OR REPLACE THE TRUCK BECAUSE THEY HAVE A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT?

This car has been amazing! I still use the 4WD about 10 times a year and have never gotten stuck, even through thick beach sand, north GA back trails, and 3ft of water. How cool is that? It has been incredibly reliable and has never left me stranded. Plus, my wife absolutely loves the seat warmers. The only downsides are the factory stereo and gas mileage, which could be better at 16-17mpg on the highway.
-
This is a great vehicle that does everything pretty well. The dealer has been great with warranty issues, but there have been no major problems at all. The mileage is decent for my city-type driving.
-
I bought this vehicle about 14 months ago because of the great rebate and my need for a new car. At first, I wasn't completely sold on it, but I decided to go for the Limited model since it had all the features I was looking for. As time has gone on, I've grown to like it more and more and have been really happy with how it performs overall. While it doesn't get amazing gas mileage, I haven't had any issues with it at all.
-
After 2+ years of ownership and 40K miles of road use, I have not experienced any problems. It is an excellent vehicle for long-distance travel, especially when carrying camping or other gear.
-
This has been a great vehicle. Although the seat could use a little more padding, I have gotten used to it. It's a shame that they no longer make this vehicle!

After 25,000 miles, this vehicle still drives like it's brand new. The build quality is very solid, much better than what you see on Explorers or Blazers. While the gas mileage could be better, let's face it, it's not the most aerodynamic shape. Overall, we are extremely pleased with this vehicle and would have bought another one if they were still being made.
