The Hyundai Veloster (Korean: 현대 벨로스터, romanized: Hyeondae Belloseuteo) is a compact car first produced in 2011 by Hyundai, with sales beginning in South Korea on March 10, 2011, and in Canada and the United States since the fall of 2011. In South Korea, it was marketed under Hyundai's 'Premium Youth Lab'. It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit Auto Show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Hyundai Tiburon after the 2008 model year.

The car differs from most other hatchbacks with its asymmetrical door configuration, featuring one large door on the driver side and two smaller doors on the passenger side. This configuration is more common on commercial vehicles and minivans. In North America, the Veloster was equipped with Blue Link, a new telematics system which will eventually be standard on all Hyundai models. The system is comparable to OnStar in General Motors vehicles, and provides customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, and remote control of vehicle features, among others.

Development and early concepts

HND-3 concept (2007)

The Hyundai HND-3 concept was the third sport compact concept car styled at Hyundai's Design and Technical Center. It included 2.0-liter DOHC Theta inline four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The concept car became a Veloster Coupe in 2011.

The car concept was unveiled at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster is developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee'd's front-wheel drive platform.

Common 2014 Hyundai Veloster problems

The Hyundai Veloster, a hatchback coupe aimed at a younger audience, has been in production since 2011. While it offers a unique design and modern technology, there are common problems that owners have reported, particularly in the 2014 model year.

  • Engine Problems: Engine issues are another concern for Hyundai Veloster owners. These problems can range from knocking noises and loss of power for approximately 10 seconds to going into limp mode and excessive oil consumption. Such signs should not be ignored, as they can lead to a complete engine failure. Unless you are a mechanic, it is recommended to leave engine repairs to professionals to avoid budget and headache issues in the long run.
  • Connecting Rod Failure: The connecting rod plays a crucial role in the engine, tying the piston to the crankshaft and creating rotational torque. If the connecting rods are not durable enough to withstand high pressure for many years, they may fail, especially if you enjoy running at full throttle. This issue is more prevalent in the 2013 model year, and replacing the connecting rods or the entire engine assembly may be necessary at around 60,000 miles.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity and Syncing Issues: Some Hyundai Veloster owners, particularly those with 2013-2015 models, have reported problems connecting their smartphones. The connection can break suddenly for no reason, and in some cases, the entire entertainment system can freeze. This issue has been resolved in later models.
  • Interior Accessories: Some Hyundai Veloster models, particularly the 2012 and 2013 models, have experienced issues with interior accessories. For instance, the speakers in the 2013 model may stop working without warning, and the 2012 model has transmission troubles that can make it expensive to maintain.

In summary, the Hyundai Veloster has several common problems, particularly in the 2014 model year. Transmission and engine issues, connecting rod failure, Bluetooth connectivity and syncing problems, and interior accessories are some of the most frequently reported concerns. If you are considering purchasing a used Hyundai Veloster, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues and consider the costs and headaches they may entail.

My Vehicule already was checking for Hyundai but they just text me a message ; they said my car needs to replace a motor ,turbo ; some broken valves causing zero pounds of compression on cylinder 4-long block repair-new intake and exhaust manifolds (including turbo)required due to broken valve sending metal through the entire system -quote long block/intake and exhaust manifolds /turbo /all necessary gaskets and fluids for repair : I just was noted my car was consuming too much oil, cause the car board showed me 3 weeks ago and I need to add oil ,and the mechanic plugged in the scanner; but it doesn’t showed something else ;therefore 3 weeks ago I added 1/4 or more ; then was 2 week ago; I added 1/4 of oil again and then just last week I added 1/4 or more oil again ;I just was checking the oil constantly.; and it should be noted that the car was not leaking oil but I didn’t understand why it was running out so quickly .

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-18
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE4EU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have not "yet" had an incident but, because of the safety recall, I have been parking my vehicle outside for almost a year (since October 2023). It is now August 2024 and a part for my Hyundai Veloster 2014 is still not available. For an issue that may cause a fire, or indeed any recall issue, this is way too long for a remedy to become available! This has caused considerable inconvenience: scraping frost and cleaning off snow, constant dirt, and inability to park in parking garages. Additionally, the additional wear will reduce the value of the car when I sell it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE8EU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The Hyundai recall doesn't fix the problem, which is the ABS Module leaks brake fluid internally which can catch fire. The claimed "fix" puts in a low current fuse that supposedly electrically will lower the risk of a fire when the ABS leaks brake fluid internally and shorts out the electrical power to the ABS Module. The problem is that the ABS Module can develop an internal leak which causes a short that fries the ABS Module and can cause a fire by igniting the brake fluid. The lower current rated fuse can still cause a fire, so I don't see the NHTSA Recall No. 23V651000 as a real fix. I want a replacement of the brake fluid leak-prone ABS Module in my 2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo so I can safely use and park my car indoors without the potential of a fire while parked or driving. I have not experienced a fire in the recalled vehicle, but I think I am entitled to a proper "fix". I am an electrical engineer with an MSEE degree and many US patents. I have been greatly inconvenienced by following the recall warning to "park the vehicle outside (outdoors) away from structures". The outside exposure to hot temperatures, harsh sunshine, and salt air degrades the finish and mechanicals of my vehicle by following the recall warning. So Hyundai's faulty ABS Module costs me money (value of the vehicle) besides the risk and inconvenience. Make Hyundai really fix the problem by replacing the ABS Module as a minimum.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE2EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine started knocking at 117,xxx miles with oil changes less then 5,000 miles. Dealership acknowledged and confirmed that the rod bearings were bad. If requested could remove the rod bearings. Dealership and corporate Hyundai acknowledged the problem, but would not help cover any of the costs. The vehicle was also losing around 1 quart for every 1,000 miles which was not addressed by the dealer. This is a huge safety risk, if the bearing completely failed the vehicle would have stalled on the interstate. No check engine light is present or was present. The issues with the Veloster Turbo is well know and document from 2012-2017 regarding the failure of rod bearings prematurely. Other Kia and Hyundai vehicles have recalls for this same problem, unfortunately the Veloster does not.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-10
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE0EU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: There is a current recall since September, 2023, with no remedy to date. In addition, I have driven this vehicle very little after last having my car serviced at the dealership, just over a year now, which seemed to not be sounding right in the engine, so it alarmed me, and all started feeling overwhelming since going to the dealership for repairs. I see there is an engine recall on the 2015 Veloster, though not the 2014? Yet they are claiming that both issues can cause fires. My vehicle has less than 100K miles if I remember correct from when I last looked. it's been months since I've even driven the vehicle, as I've not felt safe or comfortable doing so. My vehicle seems to have a lot of the same symptoms as the 2015 Veloster recall. i have been nervous to take it back to the same dealer, though I've also been too nervous to let just any mechanic look at it. When the dealer last changed my oil, a bunch leaked out in my driveway, and I was told there's a safety overflow. In addition, my oil light came on, and I was simply told they forgot to reset it.

  • Components: VISIBILITY,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On March 8, 2023, I was waiting at a red light and since the weather was really nice, it was cloudy and not too cold I decided to open my sunroof and when all of the sudden I felt glass raining all over me, my sunroof exploded! I got little cuts over my face and arms because of the glass, and my back and arms felt itchy because of the tiny little pieces of glass. I was on my way to pick up the girls from daycare, I'm so grateful they were not with me at the incident moment and that the car was not on motion. Now, they are charging me over $1000 dlls on repairs. I just got this car less than 2 months ago, I barely pay my first payment and this happens!?

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-04
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE5EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: When driving my vehicle on the highway, I took an off ramp and came to a complete stop at a stop light. When coming to the stop my car completely shut off. It would not turn over or anything. I popped the hood and didn't see any sign of oil or fluid leaks from the engine bay or underneath the vehicle. After getting it towed to the nearest mechanic they checked for codes and nothing popped up. They checked my oil (which I change my fluids regularly and have documents to prove so) and found there was only half of a quart of oil in my engine. They drained it and in the sample they found metallic particles in the oil. Now my engine is knocking anytime I press on the gas. Looking over the type of engine I have (Gamma GDI) there was an issued recall on that specific type of engine for the exact same problem I have across Hyundai and Kia vehicles sharing the same type of engine. I contacted Hyundai but they refuse to work on my vehicle since my VIN doesn't pop up for the recall even though all the supporting documents and diagnosis I have show, that the engine problem I have are the exact same as the recall shows. I even gave Hyundai their own Technical Service Bulletin that was on their website showing my year make and model should be worked on. Now Hyundai keeps telling me its a warranty issue, not a recall issue ignoring everything I've given them to support my claim even after stating how they had a class action lawsuit they LOST in California for this same issue of the engine malfunctioning and then would start knocking right after the warranty would end (my vehicle is at 109500 miles.) I am at a complete loss and don't know what to do since this was my first bigger vehicle purchase that I still owe on and they want me to pay 10k for a refurbished engine.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-26
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: KMHTC6AEXEU

  • Summary: Driving on cruise control on interstate , the 2014 Hyundai Veloster felt like it lost power .The engine light flashed a few times . White smoke came out of rear as started to merge it made a low clank noise from the engine compartment . Pulled over off of interstate and popped hood to check the engine and realized there was fire coming from all over the engine . 2014 Hyundai Veloster financed not even made the first payment either. Had 120,043 miles on it . Dealership claimed that they did a recon on it before they turned it over to us . We did take it back in because the engine turned off as he was idling at stop lights. It was harder and harder to get started , it got to the point where it would stop running while moving . The dealership could not Replicate the problem and therefore turned it back over to us . Codes P0302 and P0335 came on . There were no recalls on the 2014 models but the year before and after . Doesn’t make sense , since they all had engine problems , catching on fire .

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-25
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE9EU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving down I95 south at 10:30 at night my car made a noise like I ran over a cardboard box. Then smoke started to come out of the hood. I I went to the emergency lane hoping it was a flat tire. There was oil all over the ground and car. No warning lights or car acting funny. Cruise was set and driving home with my mom. Took car to dealership and verified the block had cracked. I asked why, the car only had 65800 miles on it. They said my last oil change looked good, they have no idea. Not covered under warranty. Only 2015 and 2016 are covered for motor failure. Mine is a 2014 I checked the recalls. They charged me $9100 to replace the motor. When I picked up the car I asked again why it cracked. They said sometimes they just don't know why. My mom and I were stranded on the freeway for over two hours waiting for a tow truck and it decide to rain on us 3 times.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-19
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD1EU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I purchased my 2014 Hyundai Veloster as a CPO back in January of 2018 with approximately 37k miles. Currently it has 95,637 miles. Within the first couple months of ownership, I noticed that the vehicle was sporadically acting up during acceleration (specifically when shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear). During this process it acts as if all of its power is shut off momentarily and then comes back on, which can potentially be dangerous when accelerating into high traffic areas, or busy intersections because not only does it lose acceleration power but steering as well. I brought it to the dealership right away, but because it never throws any trouble codes, nor does it happen on command - they cannot pin point the issue. Initially they changed the alternator. The second time, I believe, they changed the knock sensor or the Camshaft position sensor. In short, I’ve brought it to the dealership several times and have filed numerous complaints to Hyundai Consumer Affairs, but to no avail. Most recently (March 2022), it happened when both of my stepchildren were in the car while we were returning from the beach. I accelerated from a traffic light and was going around a bend when it happened causing me to slam into the curb and caused nearly $1700 in damage, which I had to pay for out of pocket because at this point it is out of Warranty- even though it’s been an ongoing issue pre-warranty lapse. Then to top it all off, I was leaving work this evening to go to an appointment and all of a sudden it began smoking from underneath the steering column. I quickly pulled into the turning lane and popped the fuse box lid open. Instantly I noticed that a wire harness was on fire, which luckily I was able to blow out after several attempts. I’m at my wit’s end with this car, with the dealership, and with Hyundai….. I need help and don’t know what to do!

Negative 2014 Hyundai Veloster car reviews

  1. Shad Ryan 2025-02-12

I've owned this car for two years now and overall, I find it to be a fun car to drive around and open up every now and then. However, I have been experiencing some minor problems with it lately that are becoming increasingly annoying. For instance, this is the second winter in a row where the clock fails to keep the time after the car is shut off. I took it to the dealer before and they fixed it the next day with no problem. However, one year later, I am having the same problem again. The infotainment system has been a bit of a headache for me. I've had nothing but issues with it. After a year of owning the car, I've had numerous incidents where the whole system would lock up and fail to turn off or restart. A few months later, I noticed the left tweeter died. Shortly after, the right tweeter died. After four or five trips to the dealer who couldn't figure out the problem, they finally determined the amp was at fault and they replaced it. I am not one to blast music- the volume never really gets above 12 on the car so please don't think that I just blast the music all the time then complain when the speakers stop working. Aside from the infotainment, the windscreen area squeaks and creaks incredibly loud when the temperature drops below about 50 Fahrenheit. I have tried many times to remedy the problem with felt tape around the cowl area but have only had marginal success. This car is really not a fan of the cold! Overall, I would recommend this car to someone who lives in a warm climate and doesn't mind a peaky engine. (The car has no trouble going from a rolling start up to high speeds in no time, but from a dead stop, you will notice a significant lag in power.) This may be the car for you if you want random people on the street commenting on your 'cool little car' and asking 'how do you like that thing?' It really does a good job at catching the eyes of passerby's but has sadly lost my interest after 2 years of ownership.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Veloster (non-Turbo) in case it helps anyone who lives in snowy weather or does a lot of driving like me. I bought this car on a whim back in May 2013 and I have to say, it's been a great choice. Not only is it super cute and unique-looking, but it's also packed with all the bells and whistles you could ever want. Plus, the gas mileage is phenomenal - I've gotten as much as 38 or 40 MPGs on the highway, which is amazing considering how expensive gas was back in 2013. The interior design is really snazzy and futuristic-looking, without being too over-the-top like some other cars in this price range. The controls are also really intuitive and user-friendly, so you don't have to fumble around to find what you're looking for. The technology in this car is fantastic, especially the navigation system - I use it all the time for work and it's been a lifesaver. The panoramic sunroof is also a really nice touch, and the three-door design definitely makes it stand out from the crowd. I've gotten so many compliments on this car over the years, and it still looks just as cool and different as the day I bought it. The rear-view camera is also a great feature, especially since the back window is pretty small and there are some blind spots. The brakes are really responsive too, which has saved me from a few close calls on the road. The only downsides are that the seats aren't the most comfortable and it can be a bit tricky to get in and out of the car. The back seats are also not the most spacious, but they get the job done. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Veloster to anyone looking for a fun, stylish, and practical car that won't break the bank. The cargo space in the back hatchback is surprisingly roomy for a car this size. I was able to fit medium-sized furniture and a fair amount of boxes in the back once I put the back seats down. Even with the back seats up, you can still fit a couple of big, fully-packed suitcases in there, with room for some carry-on items too. However, there are some downsides to this car. For one, it has really poor acceleration. The Veloster looks like it would move fast and nimble, but its acceleration is sluggish at best. I heard it's better in the Turbo model, but if you have the standard like I did, it's surprisingly slow. The ride in the car is rough, especially the more miles you put on it, and you will feel every bump and pothole on the road. If you live in a state where you have nicely paved highways and side streets, this shouldn't be an issue, but we have some really crappy roads in Colorado so I constantly felt jostled around while driving, which only added to my stress levels on a daily basis. I was constantly worried that I'll accidentally hit a big bump or pothole, which will then make the Veloster scrape the bottom being that it's so low-profile. Speaking of the low-profile, I don't do any off-road driving or anything like that, but the low profile of this car can be an issue on poorly maintained or weather-damaged roads. But here's the biggest issue I had with this car: this car is great in the summer or in warm-weather climates, so if you live in Florida or California where the roads are nice and the weather is nice most of the year, then this is the car for you! However, this car cannot handle snow or heavy torrential rains at all! If you are trying to go up a hill in snowy weather, this car will slip and slide all over the place! I dreaded snowy winter days in this car, as I commute 40 miles one way on the highway to work. When it snowed, I would slip and slide the whole way and be praying to all the saints and angels to get to work in one piece.I had a few issues with the Veloster when it came to winter driving. Even with all-weather tires, it was difficult to back out of my driveway during snowfall. However, in light rains, the Veloster performed well. The high-performance tires required for this car may not be practical for those who do a lot of highway driving, like myself. I had to replace my tires once a year, which can be expensive if you need all-weather tires. As the car got older, it started to rattle and vibrate more, which eventually affected the speakers and sound system. Overall, the Veloster is a great little car for those who live in warm weather and do mostly city driving. Unfortunately, it didn't fit my needs living and working in Colorado with its unpredictable weather and roads. I ended up trading it in for a more sturdy and practical 2016 Subaru Crosstrek, which is the quintessential Colorado car.

Hi there! I bought this car used from a dealer when it had 70,000 miles on it. I only owned the car for a year and barely drove it because I had a company car that I used to drive to work. I put less than 15,000 miles on the car, so it had less than 100,000 miles on it when the engine blew! :(

I have owned this car for the last two years. Unfortunately, within a month of purchasing, I needed to have a new transmission installed. To make matters worse, within a few months of purchasing, I had to have my stereo/entertainment console replaced! It lags in take off, and will every now and then struggle to go. I almost got hit because of turning and this happened!!! Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend you steer clear of this car!

This car has had several issues, including problems with the radio, back up sensors, air flow, and keyless entry. Despite these challenges, the dealership has been unable to fully resolve them. If you live in a cold climate, it may be best to consider other options. It's important to make an informed decision when purchasing a car, especially when investing a significant amount of money.

I was given a Hyundai Accent, a '98 model, which I worked on for my daughter. One day, I drove it to check out a new car and that's when I saw the Veloster. Little did I know that I would be purchasing one in the next few months! I absolutely love how the Veloster handles on turns, the great gas mileage it provides, and the 6-speed manual transmission. Everyone looks at it like it's from another planet, and my teenagers are so proud of it. With at least 35mpg, I can easily drive long distances to work. Although it's not the quickest off the line, it accelerates well enough to get up to speed when entering the highway. At 95mph, it only turns 3500rpms, and let's just say it has some serious power, but I won't go into details as I don't want to get arrested!

I purchased my car used 4 months ago. I love driving my car and all my friends want to drive it too! It has great pick-up and go! I found exactly what I was looking for at the price I wanted! I am a bit of a nut about keeping it shiny and clean! I'm just so happy with it!

I must say, the base Veloster is an excellent car. Coming from a 2009 Hyundai Elantra, I can confidently say that Hyundai's styling and build quality have significantly improved over the past four years. The base engine is more than adequate, and with the six-speed automatic and paddle shifters, it feels like driving a manual shift car. For those who know about cars, a mushy pedal usually means mushy performance, but this car has a hard gas pedal, which means the engine has power on tap. I've only owned it for a day, but I can already tell that it's nimble, sporty, and has power on tap. So, let's stop giving this car a bad review. Most owners love it, just like I do!

I purchased my Veloster Turbo 'new' back in 2013 with just over 200 kms (122 miles) on the clock. I reside in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada). As of today, after 8 years, she has clocked 179,000 kms (or 111,225 miles). Throughout this time, I have had to replace the entertainment/nav console (which was done under warranty), the fuel pump assembly, the hatchback latching system and the tie rod ends. Despite these minor setbacks, I absolutely adore this car. It's a joy to drive, incredibly fuel-efficient, highly responsive, still very stylish and has proven to be mechanically reliable. I am meticulous about oil changes and as a result, she is only now beginning to show a little rust on the left side rear quarter panel, along the edge of the wheel well. This is something I will have to attend to shortly, but it's a small price to pay for the many years of enjoyment she has given me. She is my daily driver and has taken my wife and I on countless unforgettable road trips, from Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge Parkway (many times), to Nova Scotia, to New Orleans... and the list goes on. I have no doubt that she will continue to serve me well for many more years to come. I hope this review has been helpful to you.

The Hyundai Veloster has been an amazing car for me! I love the great control, steering, and power, as well as the really well-maintained interior. I definitely prefer the added power of the turbo model versus the normal one, and it rides amazingly. Despite having over 100,000 miles, it seems to be in good shape and I could hardly tell it was 6 years old when I drove it. I plan on driving this car for as long as it stays running!
