2015 Hyundai Veloster problems

The Hyundai Veloster (Korean: 현대 벨로스터, romanized: Hyeondae Belloseuteo) is a compact car first produced in 2011 by Hyundai, with sales beginning in South Korea on March 10, 2011, and in Canada and the United States since the fall of 2011. In South Korea, it was marketed under Hyundai's 'Premium Youth Lab'. It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit Auto Show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Hyundai Tiburon after the 2008 model year.

The car differs from most other hatchbacks with its asymmetrical door configuration, featuring one large door on the driver side and two smaller doors on the passenger side. This configuration is more common on commercial vehicles and minivans. In North America, the Veloster was equipped with Blue Link, a new telematics system which will eventually be standard on all Hyundai models. The system is comparable to OnStar in General Motors vehicles, and provides customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, and remote control of vehicle features, among others.

Development and early concepts

HND-3 concept (2007)

The Hyundai HND-3 concept was the third sport compact concept car styled at Hyundai's Design and Technical Center. It included 2.0-liter DOHC Theta inline four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The concept car became a Veloster Coupe in 2011.

The car concept was unveiled at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster is developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee'd's front-wheel drive platform.

Common 2015 Hyundai Veloster problems

The Hyundai Veloster, a hatchback coupe with a unique three-door layout, has been a subject of both love and hate among car enthusiasts. While some appreciate its striking design and peppy engine, others criticize its unconventional design, compromised rear-seat comfort, and polarizing appeal. This article focuses on common problems with the Hyundai Veloster, specifically the 2015 model, based on complaints from its owners.

  • Engine Problems: Engine issues are another concern for Veloster owners. Problems range from knocking noises and loss of power for approximately 10 seconds to going into limp mode and excessive oil consumption. These signs should not be ignored, as they can lead to a complete engine failure. Unless you're a mechanic, it's recommended to leave the job to a professional to avoid budget and headache issues in the long run.
  • Connecting Rod Failure: The connecting rod, an essential part of the engine, ties the piston to the crankshaft and creates rotational torque. However, Hyundai Veloster connecting rods are not durable enough to withstand high pressure for many years, especially if you like to run at full throttle. Replacing connecting rods or the whole engine assembly might be necessary at the 60,000+ mile mark.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity and Syncing Issues: Owners of the 2013-2015 Hyundai Veloster have reported problems connecting their smartphones. In some cases, the connection breaks suddenly for no reason, and another issue is a completely frozen entertainment system.

These common problems with the Hyundai Veloster, particularly the 2015 model, highlight the importance of regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly to avoid more significant problems down the road.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-23
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD0FU

Then they said the leak down/compression test showed the exhaust valves had broken and they would need to do a long block replacement. Also mentioned they needed to have Hyundai allow them to release that long block as it is part of a recall on other vehicles. Later was told Hyundai did not approve it under the warranty.

I've had my Veloster a little under a year and I don't know if the other recall involving the motor being replaced was taken care of. It was a recall associated with my VIN. I have a video of it happening but for some reason I try to upload it on the app and it won't allow me to. It is the proper format.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-26
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE9FU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The car I bought in February in a used car lot was, per the salesperson, in excellent condition, had recently done oil changes, and had allegedly no failures. After less than 3k miles, I got stalled on the freeway with a knocking noise; Frank Hyundai mechanics diagnosed it with a CVV oil sensor red flag. I then paid for the repairs after getting denied from both my Hyundai warranty and my extended warranty. This was neglect when I drove that car for just a few months, like a weekend car, less than 3k miles. The car was still stalling on the freeway, shooting smoke, and the check engine light came on. I miraculously made it in one piece to work; however, the car had to be towed back to Frank Hyundai, where, to this day, they still have not been able to repair or precisely diagnose my vehicle, so I have been without my vehicle for almost a month and a half. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one with this problem; I think it's unfair to pay for the past owner's negligence.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-18
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE9FU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I bought this vehicle from a used car lot in February 2023, not 2022, and drove it under 3k miles; when I took it, it had 86k miles, and the check engine light came on. I took it to FRANK HYUNDAI, where, to this day, have not been able to help me; all this time, I, the consumer, had to chase down the repair guy assigned to my car and, only to be vaguely told it was sludge and metal shedding. It might be my misuse or neglect when I had driven the damn thing before even recommended servicing or an oil change was needed. I also called Hyundai Motors corporate, where a case manager suggested a goodwill repair, but nothing had been done. I would appreciate any help NHTSA could provide as there are campaigns on this model car with engine rod failures, and the damn extended warranty should apply to subsequent owners.

Negative 2015 Hyundai Veloster car reviews

  1. Jeremie Johnson 2025-03-24

I purchased this car in 2014 and have driven it for less than 35,000 miles. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it, such as a cracked sunroof frame, a clicking noise in the steering column, a broken overhead sunglass holder, a broken trunk release, and a malfunctioning backup camera. Additionally, the weather seal around the hatchback had to be resealed and is still coming off. The road noise can be quite loud when driving on the highway, and the car's metal is quite thin and prone to denting. Despite these issues, I have found the car to be reliable for my daily commute and it is always garaged when not in use. While I am disappointed with the quality of this car, I understand that these things can happen and I will be more cautious in my future car purchases. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  2. Arturo Jaskolski 2025-02-18

I've owned this car for two years now and overall, I find it to be a fun car to drive around and open up every now and then. However, I have been experiencing some minor problems with it lately that are becoming increasingly annoying. For instance, this is the second winter in a row where the clock fails to keep the time after the car is shut off. I took it to the dealer before and they fixed it the next day with no problem. However, one year later, I am having the same problem again. The infotainment system has been a bit of a headache for me. I've had nothing but issues with it. After a year of owning the car, I've had numerous incidents where the whole system would lock up and fail to turn off or restart. A few months later, I noticed the left tweeter died. Shortly after, the right tweeter died. After four or five trips to the dealer who couldn't figure out the problem, they finally determined the amp was at fault and they replaced it. I am not one to blast music- the volume never really gets above 12 on the car so please don't think that I just blast the music all the time then complain when the speakers stop working. Aside from the infotainment, the windscreen area squeaks and creaks incredibly loud when the temperature drops below about 50 Fahrenheit. I have tried many times to remedy the problem with felt tape around the cowl area but have only had marginal success. This car is really not a fan of the cold! Overall, I would recommend this car to someone who lives in a warm climate and doesn't mind a peaky engine. (The car has no trouble going from a rolling start up to high speeds in no time, but from a dead stop, you will notice a significant lag in power.) This may be the car for you if you want random people on the street commenting on your 'cool little car' and asking 'how do you like that thing?' It really does a good job at catching the eyes of passerby's but has sadly lost my interest after 2 years of ownership.

  3. Garrison Trantow 2024-11-21

I had a turbo veloster which was a decent car until it reached 60-70k miles. Unfortunately, the roof and hatch started to rust and it began burning oil. Surprisingly, even though it was burning at least 2 quarts every 1k miles, no oil light ever came on! Right before I sold it with 100k miles, I noticed that the clock was not working properly and would never stay set. Overall, my experience with these Hyundai and Kia cars was not great. I would not recommend buying one, and I personally will not be purchasing one again.

  4. Alek Hills 2024-11-04

We've had our Veloster for around 100k miles now. We purchased it with 6,000 miles on it, so unfortunately the warranty was voided. So far, we've had to spend thousands of dollars on repairs for this car. The cheapest repair was just changing the headlight bulb, but even that was a hassle since the front bumper had to be dropped just to get enough space to change the bulb itself. Then, around 70k miles, the turbo went out, which cost us several thousand dollars to repair. Since then, the car has been going through a lot of oil. Now, just over 100k miles, the heating system no longer works, which will cost us another $1000. These issues alone are enough for me to not buy another Hyundai or recommend one to my family or friends. Additionally, the car is quite loud and has a rough ride, making you feel every bump on the road. There's also no space in the back seat for passengers. Overall, the quality of this vehicle is poor and its performance has been just as bad.

  5. Richmond Reinger 2024-09-27

Your car has some great features and looks beautiful! Although it has 50k miles and is 8 years old, it still has a very good rear view back up camera. However, there are some blind spots at the rear hatchback area quarter panel that the camera does not pick up, which could be improved by adding glass. Additionally, the windshield trim at the sides is a bit too wide and creates a blind spot. The rear hatch back door opener could also be improved, as it cannot be opened from the driver compartment and the rubber opener outside on the hatchback door deteriorates quickly. The front door is a bit long and can create problems in tight parking spots, but overall it's a great car. The sun glass holder push and open style is a bit fragile, and a spring latch would be more dependable. Although the warranty sounds great, I had some issues with my transmission and it took a while to get it fixed. However, the dealership eventually resolved the issue and got my car back on the road. Overall, I'm happy with my car and would recommend it to others.Had to get my car towed back due to a faulty crankshaft sensor. Although it's running fine now, the touch screen unfortunately doesn't work anymore. The dealer informed me that the radio component failed and the whole info center needs to be replaced. It's quite frustrating, which is why I'm giving it 2 stars. The transmission is not great, and I've had some issues with the warranty service from Hyundai. Additionally, some parts have broken down after only 50K on the car. The stock tires that came with the car were also not very good, as I experienced major drift on straight roads. However, once I replaced the tires, the drift disappeared. Other than these issues, the car is nice... as long as you keep it under 40k.

Positive 2015 Hyundai Veloster car reviews

I recently purchased a Veloster Turbo and wanted to share my thoughts on it. I have been thoroughly impressed with this car and its performance. It has never let me down and I enjoy driving it every day. The fuel efficiency is also impressive, averaging around 34mpg combined. The sound system, especially on XM radio, is pretty good. Additionally, the trunk space is ample, especially with the back seats down. I always receive compliments on my car as I drive by, and I have yet to see another Veloster Turbo in Northern California since purchasing mine. I love the fact that this car is unique. When accelerating from a stop, the car provides a thrilling experience as it pulls you back into the seat. If you're in the market for an economical car with some power, the Veloster Turbo is definitely worth considering!

I've owned my car for over a year now and I still absolutely love it! Although there are some minor quirks, they can easily be fixed with some aftermarket parts. This car is perfect if you're looking to add power and handling capabilities, and it handles them with ease. I haven't had any mechanical issues that required me to visit the dealer in the year that I've owned it. It's also great for long-distance driving as it's both fun and comfortable. Additionally, the MPG estimate is quite conservative, as I've been averaging higher than the EPA estimates.

If you purchased a Veloster with unrealistic expectations, it's important to remember that the car is exactly what it is. However, it's unfair to blame the car for not meeting your expectations. I've owned mine for a year and a half and I still admire it every time I park it. It's always fun to drive and I've put 22,000 miles on it without getting bored. I did have one warranty issue with the fan motor switch, but it was quickly resolved by my local dealership. I also upgraded the air intake with a K&N air filter, which improved the throttle response. Recently, I replaced the OEM tires with Indy Firehawk 500s and while it did slightly decrease my fuel mileage, it was easy to compensate for. Some people complain about road noise, but I don't mind it as it keeps me connected to the road. The fuel mileage is phenomenal, averaging 20-30 mpg around town and 40-50 mpg on the highway with sensible driving habits. Even when I drive with spirit, the fuel mileage only drops by 5-10 mpg. While the Veloster may not have the limits of a Corvette or Ferrari, it still delivers an enjoyable driving experience. One of the reasons I chose the Veloster was because it stands out from other hatchbacks. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and plan to keep it until it's paid off. There are only minor changes I would make, which are insignificant to most people.

The turbo in my car was listed for over 26K, but I managed to get it for under 21K. It boasts a wide powerband and plenty of power, making passing a breeze. Despite some hard plastic in the interior, the car looks great and the seats are incredibly comfortable and supportive. At its price point, this car offers an impressive array of features. While taller individuals may find the headroom with the sunroof a bit tight, the car handles exceptionally well, particularly at higher speeds (80mph). Although the torsion bar rear suspension can be a bit jarring over potholes, the car performs well on smooth roads. As for frozen windshields, an ice scraper is a must-have in colder climates. Adding a block heater or using the Bluelink to start the car with your phone can also help. Overall, this car is an awesome little hot rod that is both functional and affordable. It's worth noting that it runs on 87 octane gas, making it an even better value for the price.

I just want to start by saying that the reviews on these cars are mostly true. Living in Oklahoma, I can personally guarantee that the ride quality is less than perfect. Additionally, I have several vertically inclined friends, making the backseat a little tight in the headroom department. However, this car does exactly what it was designed to do. Don't expect the rear passenger volume and ride quality of a plush family sedan. The inspiration for Veloster isn't derived from the soul of other hot hatches, but instead from that of a sports bike. Its driving dynamics tell that story very well. It's very quick to roast the tires (1st and 2nd gear), smack your head on the headrest, give you some truly wild cornering (thanks to the turbo's torque vectoring control), all while piping a modest amount of that rude engine/exhaust note through Veloster's 450 watt sound system. I searched car after car before I found Veloster. Cars I just knew I was going to buy. Mazda 3, Nissan Sentra SR, and even the Dodge Dart GT. All of these are great cars, but...Shortly after I entered the two-tone leather appointed cabin, opened the nearly entire roof's worth of sunroof, mashed the gas pedal, and dumped that buttery clutch...I fell in love with that feeling. A feeling no car I was considering could provide. Finally, take into consideration what you need this car for and where or how you'll be using it. Take an extended test drive if possible and really decide if this car was made for you. It didn't take me long to figure out it was made for me.
