Hyundai Veloster problems
The Hyundai Veloster (Korean: 현대 벨로스터, romanized: Hyeondae Belloseuteo) is a compact car first produced in 2011 by Hyundai, with sales beginning in South Korea on March 10, 2011, and in Canada and the United States since the fall of 2011. In South Korea, it was marketed under Hyundai's 'Premium Youth Lab'. It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit Auto Show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Hyundai Tiburon after the 2008 model year.
The car differs from most other hatchbacks with its asymmetrical door configuration, featuring one large door on the driver side and two smaller doors on the passenger side. This configuration is more common on commercial vehicles and minivans. In North America, the Veloster was equipped with Blue Link, a new telematics system which will eventually be standard on all Hyundai models. The system is comparable to OnStar in General Motors vehicles, and provides customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, and remote control of vehicle features, among others.
Development and early concepts
HND-3 concept (2007)
The Hyundai HND-3 concept was the third sport compact concept car styled at Hyundai's Design and Technical Center. It included 2.0-liter DOHC Theta inline four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The concept car became a Veloster Coupe in 2011.
The car concept was unveiled at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster is developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee'd's front-wheel drive platform.

Common Hyundai Veloster problems
The Hyundai Veloster, a sporty hatchback produced by the Korean automaker, has been plagued with a number of issues that have caused many consumers to steer clear of it. While some model years have been great, others have been plagued with problems, particularly involving the engine or transmission.
One of the most serious problems reported by Hyundai Veloster owners is connecting rod failure, which can lead to expensive repairs. The connecting rods are the workhorse of the engine, directing the downward force of the pistons to the crank throws to create rotational torque. They have to be strong enough to withstand the highest combustion loads without bending or buckling under pressure. However, if the rod bearings are deprived of engine oil, the pistons can move out of position and cause havoc on the engine parts. This problem is mostly present with the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and can lead to a complete engine rebuild.
Another problem reported by Hyundai Veloster owners is a sudden loss of power, which was most prevalent in the 2015 model. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including engine misfiring or hidden defects. In some cases, the problem can be intermittent, making it difficult to diagnose and repair.
The 2013 Hyundai Veloster has been identified as the worst model year due to the high number of complaints and the severity of the problems reported. The most-reported problem is poor speakers, but engine problems are also a significant issue. The average cost to fix engine problems in the 2013 Hyundai Veloster is $3,000, with an average mileage of 64,000 miles when the problems occur.
In addition to engine and transmission problems, some Hyundai Veloster owners have reported issues with the entertainment system, particularly with Bluetooth connectivity and syncing. This problem was particularly prevalent in the 2013-2015 models, with some owners reporting a completely frozen entertainment system.
Overall, the Hyundai Veloster has been plagued with a number of problems, particularly involving the engine and transmission. While some model years have been better than others, the 2013 model year has been identified as the worst due to the high number of complaints and the severity of the problems reported. If you are considering purchasing a Hyundai Veloster, it is important to be aware of these potential issues and to consider the costs and headaches that may be involved in repairing them.
Is a Hyundai Veloster a reliable car?
The Hyundai Veloster is a well-received hatchback with a reliability rating of 4 out of 5 from RepairPal. The Veloster is known for its powerful engine, excellent handling, and generally good performance. Despite its reliability, the Veloster doesn't come without problems.
What issues does the Hyundai Veloster have?
These gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines are plagued with problems. From bearing failure, to connecting rod knocks, to oil consumption, and yes – engine infernos.
How long does a Veloster engine last?
The proper mileage for the Hyundai Veloster to reach is around 200,000 miles. Thus, we can state that the high mileage for the Veloster is around 150,000 miles. Anything at this point, or higher, means the Veloster is very close to encountering serious troubles that will cost ample money to care for in the shop.
What is the most common problem why a Hyundai Veloster wont start?
Correcting most no-start problems usually involves replacing the alternator, starter or battery, cleaning connections, ignition system repairs, or fuel system repairs. But because there are so many potential causes, the diagnosis is key to understanding how expensive the repair will be.

- Summary: Shortly after finishing major repairs at my local dealer, I started to expirience, what I believe, now, to be a "low-end engine knock". Engine knock can usually occur due to oil starvation, where the connecting rod bearings are worn and debris enters the engine. So, I brought my car back to the dealer to ask them what this strange noise was I was hearing; I asked them if it could be the brand new clutch, or their equipment they left in the engine bay for me. They gave me an answer and it was to not drive the car anymore. One employee of the dealer even suggested "wrapping it around a telephone pole"... They told me what the repairs would cost and I had not qualified for a warranty extention so I left. I acquired a definitive diagnostic elsewhere and was shown the gravity of the situation. My oil filter had caught pieces of the engine and it was dubbed an engine knock. This incident took me completely by surprise. I regularly changed my oil and never saw my levels get so low that they would be considered empty. I have only owned the car for 5 years and it being only 8 years old, I was hoping to enjoy the driving expirience for years to come. That sensation has been replaced with apprehension and possible engine fire... how do I afford to buy a new car every 5 years if I can't drive the one I have now??

- Date Complaint: 2024-09-16
- VIN: KMHTC6AE6DU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: A connecting rod bearing failed in the engine leading to catastrophic engine failure with the connecting rod breaking through the wall of the engine block causing a hole and undriveable vehicle. According to my research, this issue has been recalled in adjacent model years (2015-2016) but not in my model year (2013) that has the same engine. This issue has already been confirmed in these engines, but Hyundai states my car is not included in the recall. This was a safety risk because the engine failure breached the engine wall which could have ignited engine oil and caused a fire. The engine may have also failed at a critical driving moment when acceleration was needed and stranded the car in an unsafe position. Yes, the problem was reproduced at the dealer's service center because the failure occurred while they were test driving my vehicle. Since the service center tech was the one driving the car when the incident occured, I do not know if there was a fire or not and the speed they were traveling, etc. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer service center and confirmed that this is the issue that caused the problem. The dealer even suspected this was going to happen as they had foreknowledge of the issue occurring on other vehicles that had already been recalled for this issue. The only prior warning of this issue is that I had some misfires on the engine a few days before which is what prompted me to bring it in for service. The misfires temporarily illuminated the "check engine" light but then the light went back out again. I had no idea this minor issue would result in such a severe, catastrophic failure.

- Summary: On May 13, 2024 my car had it's motor replaced. This was done at no charge by Hyundai of Wesley Chapel (Not where I bought it). The motor was replaced because of a recall (Product Improvement Campaign 966/ Knock Sensor Detection System). On July 28, 2024 my car engine ( the new one they had given me 10 weeks earlier) overheated and broke down. We had the car towed back to Hyundai of Wesley Chapel. They were unable to determine the cause of the engine breaking down, other than that is was leaking coolant. Hyundai is asking me to pay for a diagnostic test, estimated at between $3,000 and $4,000 to determine the cause. We do not want to do that and don't believe we should be held responsible for this cost. We have not been provided with a loaner car. This is a big inconvenience that we need resolved.

Hi there! I understand that finding the perfect vehicle can be tough. Let's work together to find the one you want!

Vehicle year: 2013
I purchased my Veloster Turbo 'new' back in 2013 with just over 200 kms (122 miles) on the clock. I reside in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada). As of today, after 8 years, she has clocked 179,000 kms (or 111,225 miles). Throughout this time, I have had to replace the entertainment/nav console (which was done under warranty), the fuel pump assembly, the hatchback latching system and the tie rod ends. Despite these minor setbacks, I absolutely adore this car. It's a joy to drive, incredibly fuel-efficient, highly responsive, still very stylish and has proven to be mechanically reliable. I am meticulous about oil changes and as a result, she is only now beginning to show a little rust on the left side rear quarter panel, along the edge of the wheel well. This is something I will have to attend to shortly, but it's a small price to pay for the many years of enjoyment she has given me. She is my daily driver and has taken my wife and I on countless unforgettable road trips, from Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge Parkway (many times), to Nova Scotia, to New Orleans... and the list goes on. I have no doubt that she will continue to serve me well for many more years to come. I hope this review has been helpful to you.

Vehicle year: 2017
The car had a dead cell in its battery when it was delivered, but the dealer replaced it for free after two jump starts covered by the warranty. Since then, the car has been very reliable. The ride can be a bit harsh, but it's still manageable. The steering is weighted heavier than most cars, but it feels just right. The best feature of the car is the 6-speed manual transmission with the B&M sport shifter, which is an absolute joy to use. The turbo roll-on power is very satisfying. The only downside is that the car doesn't come with a spare tire, only a flat fixing kit. However, you can purchase self-sealing or run-flat tires to solve this issue. The fuel economy has been a bit disappointing, averaging 25 mpg with non-aggressive driving. If you're looking for a great deal, I purchased mine in October 2016 when Hyundai was offering a $4,000 discount on Velosters. I also found a dealer offering an additional $2,550 discount, bringing the total discount to $6,550 on a car with a $22,540 MSRP. If you can find a similar deal, you'll have an incredible bargain for a 201 horsepower turbo-powered sporty car that's a lot of fun. As of 8/31/19, with 12,500 miles on the odometer, the car is still reliable and fun to drive. The mpg is slowly increasing (26.5 mpg), and I'm still looking for self-sealing tires as run-flats will make the ride even harsher. Unfortunately, it seems that no one makes them in a size that fits the turbo Veloster. Recently, rodents chewed a hole in the windshield wiper supply line hose, and the repair cost $140 at the dealer, which seems a bit excessive. I've been servicing the car every 6 months to maintain the warranty, which is about every 2,500 miles at the rate I drive the car.Servicing your car is important to maintain its performance. Although the recommended frequency for oil changes may seem excessive, advancements in motor oil formulations have made it possible to extend the time between services. The service department recently recommended servicing every 4 months to sustain the warranty, but it's important to verify this information. While the 2019 redesign lacks the large rear roof window of the 2016 model, it has a totally independent rear suspension which is a big plus. Although cargo capacity may be affected, I am still happy with my car and not considering trading it for the new redesigned version.

It's a great car, but the flooring seems to be inexpensively made. I did have to replace the clutch after 24K miles, which is unusual for me since I've been driving manual shifts for 30 years and never had to do that before.

I looked at a lot of cars on the internet and read many reviews. I finally decided on the Hyundai Voloster because of its great price and quality. I got a fantastic deal on a 2016 closeout in a vibrant vitamin c color with a turbo. The car sounds amazing on start up, and I love the little noise from the pipes. The engine runs smoothly, although the transmission takes some getting used to. The salesman suggested it would help with the turbo. On a recent trip of about 400 miles, I was getting an impressive 39.6 mpg on the highway. I absolutely love this car, even though it has some blind spots. However, adjusting the mirrors solved that issue. I have now driven over 5000 miles in my car and still love it. It's great on gas mileage and fun to drive. I have taken a few trips with it, and it always provides excellent gas mileage and puts a smile on my face.

I have a 2013 VT. If I had known about the financing problems, I would have settled for another hatch with decent MPG. The car tends to rattle and creak, but it's nothing to worry about. The rear hatch rattle is most likely due to the rear spoiler nuts coming loose, but it can be easily fixed with some locktite. The factory stereo may have some issues, but they can be resolved by returning the car to the dealership. The transmission may shift abruptly at times, but the dealership assures that it's normal. The A/C control switch may have some issues, but they can be fixed by taking the car to the dealership. My turbo went out at 64,500 miles, but it was diagnosed and fixed by a Hyundai dealer. Regular maintenance is important, but preventative maintenance is even better. If the issues mentioned above are fixed, this car is worth every penny spent. It's a quick, nimble, and fun car to drive. I really enjoyed the sound system's audible performance. It's one of the best factory sound systems I have heard yet, even better than the Bose in my Escalade. If you're interested in buying one, I would recommend looking for a used one. I had trouble trading in my car as they only offered me half of what I owed. However, I have seen some 2013 models for under $10k. If you're looking for a hatchback, I would suggest considering other options. Personally, I found that getting rid of this car was the best decision for me.

I was really excited about getting this car, but unfortunately, my experience with it has been less than ideal. If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone, it would be to steer clear of Hyundai. Although I fell in love with it at first sight, it turned out to be a very unreliable partner. I purchased it brand new, but within the first month, I began experiencing major problems. One time, I even experienced a complete power shutdown while driving on the interstate, which left me stranded in the middle of nowhere during a road trip. It was a scary experience, and I still worry that it could happen again unexpectedly. Additionally, I've had to take it in for repairs multiple times due to buzzing speakers, which the dealership has told me is due to the poor adhesive they use to glue the cones on. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to provide me with a better material. It's important to note that the car comes with low profile tires, which can be problematic if you live in an area with lots of potholes. I learned this the hard way, as each wheel scraped along the entire circumference after just a few months of ownership. Lastly, there have been concerning sounds coming from underneath the car, which started as a light metallic rattle and evolved into a deep 'Whoofing' sound. It's definitely not what you would expect from a small hatchback. I hope this information is helpful to anyone considering purchasing a Hyundai.I have to admit, both my passengers and I noticed an unusual sound during our trip, which attracted some strange looks from pedestrians. I took my car to several dealerships to investigate and correct the issue, but unfortunately, after each appointment, the service managers assured me they couldn't hear anything unusual. I was disappointed with the service I received from most dealerships, which has left me with a negative impression of the brand. Despite this, my Veloster was returned to me with the same issue. As I approach 60k miles, I am concerned that my initial warranty will soon expire. I plan to trade this car in before the year ends. Initially, I chose this car because it was cute, had good MPG, and was comfortable to drive. However, since leaving the sales lot, I have experienced several issues and have become increasingly dissatisfied with the vehicle. Although the warranty has not been helpful, I hope that whoever decides to buy my car will have a better experience. This is an honest review, and I encourage you to consider other brands such as Honda or Toyota. Thank you for reading.

From 1988 until 2014, I used to buy used cars until I finally purchased the Voloster. Although I loved the car, I had to trade it in just 11 months later because the sport seat was too small and made my drive uncomfortable. If only the car had a better seat, I would still have it today due to all the great features and gas mileage!

I found the Veloster to be quite unsafe, especially when driving above 40mph and going through rumble potholes or road pavement dividers on the highway, particularly on curves. This is even worse when the road is wet. The combination of tires and car design is not ideal. Additionally, when there is humidity or a frozen windshield, it takes at least 15 minutes of running the car before it becomes clear. The power is also not great, so I would not recommend it for those who frequently cut into traffic, especially during on-ramp merges. In my opinion, this car is better suited for the southern states, like Florida, rather than the northeast, and may not last long in a city like New York. However, I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

This car has some issues that you should be aware of before purchasing. Although it gets great gas mileage and has many features for the price, it has had some serious problems. The transmission needed to be replaced at 50K miles and has continued to have issues even at 100K miles. It frequently does not go into gear, stalls at red lights, and has even quit on the highway. The rear tires wear out quickly and the ride is noisy and rough. Despite these issues, the car has a touch screen radio and good gas mileage. However, I personally would not recommend this car and have traded it in for a Ford. Thank you for considering my experience.
