Hyundai Veloster problems

The Hyundai Veloster (Korean: 현대 벨로스터, romanized: Hyeondae Belloseuteo) is a compact car first produced in 2011 by Hyundai, with sales beginning in South Korea on March 10, 2011, and in Canada and the United States since the fall of 2011. In South Korea, it was marketed under Hyundai's 'Premium Youth Lab'. It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit Auto Show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Hyundai Tiburon after the 2008 model year.
The car differs from most other hatchbacks with its asymmetrical door configuration, featuring one large door on the driver side and two smaller doors on the passenger side. This configuration is more common on commercial vehicles and minivans. In North America, the Veloster was equipped with Blue Link, a new telematics system which will eventually be standard on all Hyundai models. The system is comparable to OnStar in General Motors vehicles, and provides customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, and remote control of vehicle features, among others.
Development and early concepts
HND-3 concept (2007)
The Hyundai HND-3 concept was the third sport compact concept car styled at Hyundai's Design and Technical Center. It included 2.0-liter DOHC Theta inline four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The concept car became a Veloster Coupe in 2011.
The car concept was unveiled at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster is developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee'd's front-wheel drive platform.

Common Hyundai Veloster problems
The Hyundai Veloster, a sporty hatchback produced by the Korean automaker, has been plagued with a number of issues that have caused many consumers to steer clear of it. While some model years have been great, others have been plagued with problems, particularly involving the engine or transmission.
One of the most serious problems reported by Hyundai Veloster owners is connecting rod failure, which can lead to expensive repairs. The connecting rods are the workhorse of the engine, directing the downward force of the pistons to the crank throws to create rotational torque. They have to be strong enough to withstand the highest combustion loads without bending or buckling under pressure. However, if the rod bearings are deprived of engine oil, the pistons can move out of position and cause havoc on the engine parts. This problem is mostly present with the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and can lead to a complete engine rebuild.
Another problem reported by Hyundai Veloster owners is a sudden loss of power, which was most prevalent in the 2015 model. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including engine misfiring or hidden defects. In some cases, the problem can be intermittent, making it difficult to diagnose and repair.
The 2013 Hyundai Veloster has been identified as the worst model year due to the high number of complaints and the severity of the problems reported. The most-reported problem is poor speakers, but engine problems are also a significant issue. The average cost to fix engine problems in the 2013 Hyundai Veloster is $3,000, with an average mileage of 64,000 miles when the problems occur.
In addition to engine and transmission problems, some Hyundai Veloster owners have reported issues with the entertainment system, particularly with Bluetooth connectivity and syncing. This problem was particularly prevalent in the 2013-2015 models, with some owners reporting a completely frozen entertainment system.
Overall, the Hyundai Veloster has been plagued with a number of problems, particularly involving the engine and transmission. While some model years have been better than others, the 2013 model year has been identified as the worst due to the high number of complaints and the severity of the problems reported. If you are considering purchasing a Hyundai Veloster, it is important to be aware of these potential issues and to consider the costs and headaches that may be involved in repairing them.
Is a Hyundai Veloster a reliable car?
The Hyundai Veloster is a well-received hatchback with a reliability rating of 4 out of 5 from RepairPal. The Veloster is known for its powerful engine, excellent handling, and generally good performance. Despite its reliability, the Veloster doesn't come without problems.
What issues does the Hyundai Veloster have?
These gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines are plagued with problems. From bearing failure, to connecting rod knocks, to oil consumption, and yes – engine infernos.
How long does a Veloster engine last?
The proper mileage for the Hyundai Veloster to reach is around 200,000 miles. Thus, we can state that the high mileage for the Veloster is around 150,000 miles. Anything at this point, or higher, means the Veloster is very close to encountering serious troubles that will cost ample money to care for in the shop.
What is the most common problem why a Hyundai Veloster wont start?
Correcting most no-start problems usually involves replacing the alternator, starter or battery, cleaning connections, ignition system repairs, or fuel system repairs. But because there are so many potential causes, the diagnosis is key to understanding how expensive the repair will be.

- Summary: Shortly after finishing major repairs at my local dealer, I started to expirience, what I believe, now, to be a "low-end engine knock". Engine knock can usually occur due to oil starvation, where the connecting rod bearings are worn and debris enters the engine. So, I brought my car back to the dealer to ask them what this strange noise was I was hearing; I asked them if it could be the brand new clutch, or their equipment they left in the engine bay for me. They gave me an answer and it was to not drive the car anymore. One employee of the dealer even suggested "wrapping it around a telephone pole"... They told me what the repairs would cost and I had not qualified for a warranty extention so I left. I acquired a definitive diagnostic elsewhere and was shown the gravity of the situation. My oil filter had caught pieces of the engine and it was dubbed an engine knock. This incident took me completely by surprise. I regularly changed my oil and never saw my levels get so low that they would be considered empty. I have only owned the car for 5 years and it being only 8 years old, I was hoping to enjoy the driving expirience for years to come. That sensation has been replaced with apprehension and possible engine fire... how do I afford to buy a new car every 5 years if I can't drive the one I have now??

- VIN: KMHTC6AE6DU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: A connecting rod bearing failed in the engine leading to catastrophic engine failure with the connecting rod breaking through the wall of the engine block causing a hole and undriveable vehicle. According to my research, this issue has been recalled in adjacent model years (2015-2016) but not in my model year (2013) that has the same engine. This issue has already been confirmed in these engines, but Hyundai states my car is not included in the recall. This was a safety risk because the engine failure breached the engine wall which could have ignited engine oil and caused a fire. The engine may have also failed at a critical driving moment when acceleration was needed and stranded the car in an unsafe position. Yes, the problem was reproduced at the dealer's service center because the failure occurred while they were test driving my vehicle. Since the service center tech was the one driving the car when the incident occured, I do not know if there was a fire or not and the speed they were traveling, etc. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer service center and confirmed that this is the issue that caused the problem. The dealer even suspected this was going to happen as they had foreknowledge of the issue occurring on other vehicles that had already been recalled for this issue. The only prior warning of this issue is that I had some misfires on the engine a few days before which is what prompted me to bring it in for service. The misfires temporarily illuminated the "check engine" light but then the light went back out again. I had no idea this minor issue would result in such a severe, catastrophic failure.

- Summary: On May 13, 2024 my car had it's motor replaced. This was done at no charge by Hyundai of Wesley Chapel (Not where I bought it). The motor was replaced because of a recall (Product Improvement Campaign 966/ Knock Sensor Detection System). On July 28, 2024 my car engine ( the new one they had given me 10 weeks earlier) overheated and broke down. We had the car towed back to Hyundai of Wesley Chapel. They were unable to determine the cause of the engine breaking down, other than that is was leaking coolant. Hyundai is asking me to pay for a diagnostic test, estimated at between $3,000 and $4,000 to determine the cause. We do not want to do that and don't believe we should be held responsible for this cost. We have not been provided with a loaner car. This is a big inconvenience that we need resolved.

Vehicle year: 2012
I recently discovered this car when I visited a dealership to check out an Elantra. Although I was initially hesitant, I did some research and read some reviews. As someone who commutes 100 miles round trip every day and has three kids, including an infant, I was looking for a car with great MPG and value. After test driving the Veloster, I fell in love with it and ended up purchasing one. It's a lot of fun to drive, and the 6-speed manual is smooth. I've been getting 30 city and 40-44 highway (36-38 combined!) after a solid month of driving. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

Vehicle year: 2013
I drive a 2013 Turbo and my wife has a 2014 ReFlex. We absolutely love them both! The turbo is perfect for me, especially when driving in a hilly city, as it gives me the boost I enjoy. My wife is perfectly happy with the basic engine, and both cars get great mileage. We've already taken them both on mountainous road trips of over 1000 miles, and they both averaged over 36 mpg in such conditions (highway and towns). On a highway trip, only hers got 42 mpg. As seniors, we're really enjoying the youthful styling of the car. Her ReFlex is a beauty with the extra chrome and the Ice Pearl color. We think the car is a great value for its price range, and we suspect we'll be repeat customers. In 2016, we traded my wife's car for a small SUV because she needed to sit higher. I also traded my '13 turbo for a new '16 turbo in May, and I love this one every bit as much. It has a few minor improvements, such as a 7-speed auto instead of a 6-speed and better suspension.

Vehicle year: 2015
The Veloster Turbo is such a blast to drive and it's also fuel efficient! With 201 horsepower, it accelerates like a V8 car. The handling and cornering are impressive and feel like they belong to a much more expensive car. I was originally looking at 2 door coupes like the KIA Forte, Hyundai Elantra and Honda coupes, but when I saw the Veloster in the lot after test driving the Elantra Coupe, I was immediately intrigued. The exterior design is fantastic and I love the turbo badges on some of them. I decided to take it for a test drive and it was clear that this was the car for me. I can definitely see the Veloster becoming a cult classic among the fast and furious types!

Vehicle year: 2021
Congratulations on your new 2019 Veloster! It's great to hear that you were able to upgrade from your 2016 model. The Veloster has certainly undergone some impressive changes in just three years. The Turbo model sounds like an excellent choice, with all of its advanced safety features and improved transmission and fuel economy. It's unfortunate that the Veloster doesn't receive the recognition it deserves, often being overshadowed by more expensive models like the Civic R and GTI. However, the Veloster offers comparable features at a more affordable price point. I agree that the Turbo spec is a great option, although the 6-speed transmission may not be for everyone. Additionally, the warranty is a standout feature, offering 5 years or 60,000 miles of coverage. Enjoy your new ride!

This is going to be a bit of a story, but I just have to say that my 2015 turbo Veloster is absolutely awesome! I'm a married father of two young boys, and I bought the car with only 42 miles on it. Since then, I've put over 53k miles on it, mostly driving on the notoriously terrible roads of the CA Bay Area and taking many trips to Disney. At around 50k miles, I had a bit of a scare when the car started idling roughly and then shut off at a stop light, with the oil and battery lights coming on. I was able to pull over and check everything, but there were no leaks or strange noises, and the car started up again without any issues. I got the oil changed and put on new tires, and during the alignment, I discovered that my two front ball joints were shot and all of my shocks had leaked out, which explained the bounciness I had been experiencing around 45k miles. Despite all of this, the car is still amazing, and the warranty has been a lifesaver. It's just the usual wear and tear from driving on these ridiculous roads! Plus, as long as I'm not driving it and using cruise control going up the mountains to Disney, I get great MPG!

I've owned this car for two years now and overall, I find it to be a fun car to drive around and open up every now and then. However, I have been experiencing some minor problems with it lately that are becoming increasingly annoying. For instance, this is the second winter in a row where the clock fails to keep the time after the car is shut off. I took it to the dealer before and they fixed it the next day with no problem. However, one year later, I am having the same problem again. The infotainment system has been a bit of a headache for me. I've had nothing but issues with it. After a year of owning the car, I've had numerous incidents where the whole system would lock up and fail to turn off or restart. A few months later, I noticed the left tweeter died. Shortly after, the right tweeter died. After four or five trips to the dealer who couldn't figure out the problem, they finally determined the amp was at fault and they replaced it. I am not one to blast music- the volume never really gets above 12 on the car so please don't think that I just blast the music all the time then complain when the speakers stop working. Aside from the infotainment, the windscreen area squeaks and creaks incredibly loud when the temperature drops below about 50 Fahrenheit. I have tried many times to remedy the problem with felt tape around the cowl area but have only had marginal success. This car is really not a fan of the cold! Overall, I would recommend this car to someone who lives in a warm climate and doesn't mind a peaky engine. (The car has no trouble going from a rolling start up to high speeds in no time, but from a dead stop, you will notice a significant lag in power.) This may be the car for you if you want random people on the street commenting on your 'cool little car' and asking 'how do you like that thing?' It really does a good job at catching the eyes of passerby's but has sadly lost my interest after 2 years of ownership.

I am the first owner of a 2016 Hyundai Veloster, purchased in October 2016. I absolutely loved it at first and thought I’d keep it even after I got another car down the road, because of its sporty drive and fuel economy. However, I have had some issues with the car that have been quite expensive to fix. Within the first year, I had popped 2 tires (on regular drive, nothing particularly rough or pothole filled). By now (3yrs 3mos of owning) I have replaced SIX tires due to POPPING them (not low tread or any other usual reason), because the “stylish low profile tires” have no tire and too much rim. The tires cost at the very least $100 for the 225/40R18, and are too rare to be found used at local salvage shops. I’ve been told I need new shocks and struts, which I shouldn’t need for another 2 years in an average car. My drivers side headlight went out about 3 years in, and not due to a burned out bulb. I’ve been told an average of $100 just to diagnose the issue causing the headlight to not work. About a month after, my passenger headlight lightbulb went out and needed replacing. Despite these issues, it still drives comfortably, and if the repairs it needed weren’t so expensive, I would definitely recommend the car to others. It’s fun to drive and comfortable on long journeys for those who don’t need the backseat for passengers (I take it on a 12 hour drive home once a year). It stores a surprising amount in the hatchback when the back seats are laid down. Unfortunately, I am trading it in after only 3 years because of its expensive-to-fix mechanical issues. I wish the tires and suspension were made more reliably so I didn’t have to switch cars. In general, it is a great car for those who don't drive very much and I would still recommend it to them.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Veloster (non-Turbo) in case it helps anyone who lives in snowy weather or does a lot of driving like me. I bought this car on a whim back in May 2013 and I have to say, it's been a great choice. Not only is it super cute and unique-looking, but it's also packed with all the bells and whistles you could ever want. Plus, the gas mileage is phenomenal - I've gotten as much as 38 or 40 MPGs on the highway, which is amazing considering how expensive gas was back in 2013. The interior design is really snazzy and futuristic-looking, without being too over-the-top like some other cars in this price range. The controls are also really intuitive and user-friendly, so you don't have to fumble around to find what you're looking for. The technology in this car is fantastic, especially the navigation system - I use it all the time for work and it's been a lifesaver. The panoramic sunroof is also a really nice touch, and the three-door design definitely makes it stand out from the crowd. I've gotten so many compliments on this car over the years, and it still looks just as cool and different as the day I bought it. The rear-view camera is also a great feature, especially since the back window is pretty small and there are some blind spots. The brakes are really responsive too, which has saved me from a few close calls on the road. The only downsides are that the seats aren't the most comfortable and it can be a bit tricky to get in and out of the car. The back seats are also not the most spacious, but they get the job done. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Veloster to anyone looking for a fun, stylish, and practical car that won't break the bank. The cargo space in the back hatchback is surprisingly roomy for a car this size. I was able to fit medium-sized furniture and a fair amount of boxes in the back once I put the back seats down. Even with the back seats up, you can still fit a couple of big, fully-packed suitcases in there, with room for some carry-on items too. However, there are some downsides to this car. For one, it has really poor acceleration. The Veloster looks like it would move fast and nimble, but its acceleration is sluggish at best. I heard it's better in the Turbo model, but if you have the standard like I did, it's surprisingly slow. The ride in the car is rough, especially the more miles you put on it, and you will feel every bump and pothole on the road. If you live in a state where you have nicely paved highways and side streets, this shouldn't be an issue, but we have some really crappy roads in Colorado so I constantly felt jostled around while driving, which only added to my stress levels on a daily basis. I was constantly worried that I'll accidentally hit a big bump or pothole, which will then make the Veloster scrape the bottom being that it's so low-profile. Speaking of the low-profile, I don't do any off-road driving or anything like that, but the low profile of this car can be an issue on poorly maintained or weather-damaged roads. But here's the biggest issue I had with this car: this car is great in the summer or in warm-weather climates, so if you live in Florida or California where the roads are nice and the weather is nice most of the year, then this is the car for you! However, this car cannot handle snow or heavy torrential rains at all! If you are trying to go up a hill in snowy weather, this car will slip and slide all over the place! I dreaded snowy winter days in this car, as I commute 40 miles one way on the highway to work. When it snowed, I would slip and slide the whole way and be praying to all the saints and angels to get to work in one piece.I had a few issues with the Veloster when it came to winter driving. Even with all-weather tires, it was difficult to back out of my driveway during snowfall. However, in light rains, the Veloster performed well. The high-performance tires required for this car may not be practical for those who do a lot of highway driving, like myself. I had to replace my tires once a year, which can be expensive if you need all-weather tires. As the car got older, it started to rattle and vibrate more, which eventually affected the speakers and sound system. Overall, the Veloster is a great little car for those who live in warm weather and do mostly city driving. Unfortunately, it didn't fit my needs living and working in Colorado with its unpredictable weather and roads. I ended up trading it in for a more sturdy and practical 2016 Subaru Crosstrek, which is the quintessential Colorado car.

The Veloster has been experiencing issues with surging and hesitation, particularly when accelerating or merging onto the freeway. Despite my attempts to have the issue resolved, Hyundai has informed me that this is a normal occurrence and cannot be fixed. Additionally, I have noticed some interior problems such as carpet coming up, floor mats falling apart, leather peeling off the steering wheel and shifter, and a few loose plastic roof parts. Due to these issues, I requested to return the car after only 3 weeks of ownership. It is clear that the Veloster and Hyundai have not met my expectations in terms of quality and reliability.
