The Buick LaCrosse is a four-door, front-wheel-drive sedan manufactured by Buick since model year 2005, and marketed variously across four generations for the North American and Chinese markets.

The first-generation LaCrosse replaced the Century and Regal in North America beginning for model year 2005 as a five- or six-passenger, four-door, front-wheel-drive, V6-powered sedan using GM's mid-size W platform—and marketed in Canada as the Buick Allure. Notably, the first generation was also offered with a V8 engine, as a high-performance sub-model marketed as the LaCrosse Super (2008–2009). LaCrosse production and marketing began for China with model year 2006.

The second-generation LaCrosse was introduced for 2010 as a larger premium sedan for North American and Chinese markets using a long-wheelbase (LWB) variant of the Epsilon II platform shared with the Cadillac XTS—and available solely as a five-passenger sedan with a range of four- and six-cylinder engines.

The third generation was introduced for North America and China for model year 2017 using the GM Epsilon platform shared with the Chevrolet Impala, notably offering a mild hybrid powertrain combining 20-kilowatt (27 hp) electric and 2.5-liter Ecotec gasoline engine. North American production ended with the third generation, with model year 2019; however, it continued to be offered in China, with a 2019 facelift.

The fourth-generation LaCrosse, launched in 2023, is currently manufactured and marketed solely in China. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Common 2005 Buick Lacrosse problems

The 2005 Buick LaCrosse is known for several common problems, primarily related to headlights, engine and transmission issues, and electrical problems.

  • Headlight Problems: The most common complaint in the 2005 Buick LaCrosse was problems with the headlights, including low beams flickering or going out completely. This can be a severe and dangerous issue, although it is not too expensive to repair. This problem was covered by a recall and persisted into the 2006 model year.
  • Engine and Transmission Issues: Transmission failure is one of the most expensive issues you can encounter with any vehicle. Unfortunately, the 2010 Buick LaCrosse received several complaints about this issue, with an average cost to repair of $3,900. Similarly, the 2010 model was riddled with other severe and costly engine problems, such as the engine stalling or not starting.
  • Electrical Problems: The 2005 Buick LaCrosse was subject to an ignition switch issue potentially causing airbag deployment to fail in the event of an accident. This defect was present in the 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse models and should be addressed immediately if it has not been done so. Recalls should always be repaired as soon as possible, and when buying a used vehicle, it is crucial to check the recall notices and repair history of any previous owners.
  • Power Steering Hose Leaks: Some owners have reported that the 2005 to 2010 models of the LaCrosse have an issue with a leaking power steering hose. This would result in fluids leaking into the cabin, which can be a significant inconvenience and may require costly repairs.
  • Door Lock Actuator Failure: Many owners have reported issues with the doors of the LaCrosse, including the tendency to become stuck, preventing passengers from opening the door from both sides. This can be a significant inconvenience and may require costly repairs.
  • Check Engine Light: One of the most common complaints about the LaCrosse is its check engine light. While the check engine light can warn you of potential issues your vehicle is facing, the LaCrosse’s engine light was reportedly too sensitive. According to reports, the check engine light would come on even with a loose or worn gas cap.
  • Faulty Door Lock Actuator: Many owners have complained about the doors of the LaCrosse and its tendency to become stuck. This prevents passengers from opening the door from both sides, which can be a significant inconvenience and may require costly repairs.
  • Steering Issues: Several owners have reported hearing clunking noises while steering their LaCrosse. This is a widespread problem reported for the 2005 to 2014 model years, and fixing this issue will cost you around $250-$1,000.

In summary, the 2005 Buick LaCrosse has several common problems, primarily related to headlights, engine and transmission issues, electrical problems, and door lock actuators. These issues can be significant inconveniences and may require costly repairs. Therefore, it is crucial to check the recall notices and repair history of any previous owners when buying a used vehicle.

2005 Buick Lacrosse recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2005 Buick Lacrosse.

2015-08-14
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
  • Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.
2014-06-23
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
2009-02-17
  • Manufacturer: DORMAN PRODUCTS, INC.
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: DORMAN IS RECALLING 979 STEERING KNUCKLES, DORMAN P/NOS. 697-902 AND 697-903, SOLD UNDER DORMAN'S "OE SOLUTIONSTM" BRAND NAME, AND NAPA P/NOS. 7-8502 AND 7-8503 WHICH WERE SOLD FOR REPLACEMENT USE ON THE VARIOUS VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. A POTENTIAL MATERIAL OR DESIGN DEFECT COULD RESULT IN THE STEERING KNUCKLE BREAKING IN THE HUB AREA.
  • Consequence: A BROKEN STEERING KNUCKLE COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A POSSIBLE CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
  • Remedy: DORMAN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE STEERING KNUCKLES FREE OF CHARGE AND REIMBURSE THE REPAIR FACILITY OR OWNER FOR LABOR. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 23, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DORMAN'S TOLL-FREE HOTLINE AT 1-800-523-2492 AND PRESS 5.
2006-10-31
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY BUILT WITH CLOTH SEATS THAT WERE EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC AIR BAG PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM AND LATER REUPHOLSTERED WITH AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVER KITS ARE INVOLVED. TESTING HAS INDICATED THAT THE AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVERS CAN CAUSE THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM TO MALFUNCTION.
  • Consequence: IF THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS, THE FRONT AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE MAY BE DISABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE ENABLED, OR ENABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE DISABLED. IN EITHER CASE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT REQUIRES AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A FRONT PASSENGER'S LEVEL OF INJURY MAY BE INCREASED.
  • Remedy: BECAUSE A REPLACEMENT LEATHER SEAT COVER THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM IS NOT AVAILABLE, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) WILL REPURCHASE THESE VEHICLES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS STATED IN GM'S LETTER TO OWNERS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2006. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT GM AT 1-877-477-1022 TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF REPURCHASING THEIR VEHICLE.
2005-04-20
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE CLIP THAT SECURES THE BRAKE PUSHROD TO THE BRAKE PEDAL ARM PIN COULD HAVE BEEN BENT WHEN IT WAS INSTALLED. A BENT CLIP MAY COME OFF, ALLOWING THE BRAKE BOOSTER PUSHROD TO SEPARATE FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL.
  • Consequence: PUSHING ON THE PEDAL WILL NOT APPLY THE BRAKES AND A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW BRAKE PEDAL PUSH ROD BUSHING AND RETAINING CLIP AND, IF THE CLIP WAS MISSING, A NEW BRAKE PEDAL ARM ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 26, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080.

Negative 2005 Buick Lacrosse car reviews

  1. Noble Schneider 2025-01-03

It seems like you've had a few issues with your car. The steering and brakes have needed attention, and there have been some electrical problems with the airbag light and engine icon light. It's frustrating when things go wrong, especially when they're not covered by warranty. I hope you're able to get everything sorted out soon!

  2. Elmer Friesen 2024-10-01

The car is not as quiet as advertised due to tire noise, interior rattles, and a constant buzzing sound from the dash that the dealership has been unable to fix. Waiting for next year's model may have been a better option as the bugs could have been worked out. Despite only having 6,000 miles, I am considering trading it in.

  3. Lonnie Greenholt 2024-06-26

My wife purchased a Lacrosse three years ago with 28K miles on it, but later decided to buy a Honda Accord. Unfortunately, she was unable to sell the Lacrosse. I had a recall on my Grand Prix and received an email from Buick suggesting I consider a Buick for my next purchase. I replied that I already owned an 05 Lacrosse, but was not satisfied with its performance. After a year of exchanging emails, they stopped responding. Although I have experienced some issues with the car, I have decided to keep it since it is paid off. I prefer not to pass on any issues to others. If I ever decide to purchase another car, I will consider other options. However, I do appreciate the 3.8L engine and its fuel efficiency compared to my older Grand Prix.

I wanted to bring to your attention a potential safety concern with the rear floor of my car. Recently, a passenger tripped and fell while exiting the car due to the curve near the rear seat. Although the passenger was aware of the step down, they did not notice the curve and it caused them to fall head first to the ground. I believe that having a straight floor where the seat is resting on would be safer and prevent such accidents from happening. I was wondering if GM would be able to address this issue on my car? Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hey there! I noticed that there are a few things on this car that you might have taken for granted on your previous cars, like folding side mirrors. I totally get it, they can be super handy in the garage! Also, I agree that the wipers could be better. And don't even get me started on the downsized trunk - it's a struggle to find a good place to hold it closed. It's interesting to hear that you've had 7 Buicks in the past, but it sounds like you might be considering something different for your next car. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with!

I noticed that the outside mirror on the driver's side can obstruct the view when turning left, especially in driveways. Additionally, there is a reflection of the chrome on the dash that creates a streak reflection in the mirror. At times, it can be frustrating to locate the tilt lever. It's important to remember to put locks on the wheels as there is a risk of theft. To address this, I added an additional alarm system since the factory alarm does not have a motion sensor. Despite these minor issues, I find the car to be wonderful to drive. While it may not have the smooth, soft comfort ride of a LeSabre, it is sporty and fun to drive. I highly recommend this car and hope to receive good service.

The Buick LaCrosse is definitely a fun vehicle to drive, although the interior could use some improvement. Unfortunately, the cloth seats are not very comfortable. Additionally, it took me a few tries to get used to the accelerator without accidentally hitting the brake. On the bright side, any issues I had were quickly resolved by the dealer, including a minor defect in the driver's side windshield wiper.

First GM product in 35 years. I opted for a fully-equipped CSX and was impressed with its comfort, quietness, great ride, and great handling. All controls were easy to use and the fit and finish were exceptional. I even got 3 months of free XM radio, which I didn't think I would use, but it's AWESOME! The car has good power with its 240 hp 3.6 VVT motor, but I hope the highway mileage improves. I feel really good about buying an American car again.

Congratulations Buick! The Buick LaCrosse is an excellent value in the mid-size near luxury segment. It offers elegant styling, fantastic interior comfort, and an extremely quiet ride. The engine and drivetrain are perfectly adequate for commuter and highway driving. The cockpit is sensibly designed with all controls easily accessible. Climate controls, radio, and speed controls are on the steering wheel. The gauges are easily readable. I particularly like the LED panel for the information center located in the middle of the speedometer. It is very easy to read and use. The materials used in the interior are first-rate, very near Cadillac quality. Overall, it is a very nice car. Thank you for creating such a great product!

I recently traded my 2000 Regal GS for an almost fully equipped CXS Lacrosse and I must say, what an improvement in quality, fit and finish! The driving experience is comparable to that of a German car, not quite as tight as a BMW but that is what I like about American cars - they are like driving your easy chair around! While the off the line performance can't compare to the supercharged Regal, the CXS still offers nice acceleration once it gets going. However, I do have to admit that I am a bit disappointed with the sunroof. The air noise is quite high when it's open and the glass roof doesn't tuck inside like most others, which I find to be a bit unrefined. Overall, I am quite happy with my decision to switch to the CXS Lacrosse!
