2016 Hyundai Santa fe sport problems
The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.
The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.
As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

Common 2016 Hyundai Santa fe sport problems
The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a dependable vehicle, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners
- Engine Problems: Engine issues are the most common problem category for the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. Some owners have reported that the engine makes a knocking noise, suddenly slows down, and stalls due to overheating. These defective engines are reported to consume nearly 2 quarts of oil every 1,000 miles. Hyundai has not issued a recall for this issue, but a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor can also cause the engine to stall or fail to start.
- Transmission Problems: Transmission stutters have been reported in models from 2001 to 2014, particularly when shifting from second to third gear. This issue can be resolved by replacing or repairing the crankshaft position sensor.
- Antilock Braking System (ABS): Some owners have experienced ABS short circuits, which can affect the vehicle's braking performance.
- Headlamps: Some owners have reported issues with headlamps, including dimming or flickering.
- Infotainment System: Some owners have experienced issues with the infotainment system, such as audio abruptly stopping from all speakers in models with navigation features.
- Sunroof Explosions: Although not a widespread issue, some owners have reported sunroof explosions, which can be a safety concern.
- Safety Problems: Some owners have reported safety issues, including the absence of front seatbelt audible warnings and secondary hood latch binding, which may not latch properly.
- Fuel System Issues: Some owners have reported fuel system problems, including leaks or issues with the fuel pump.
- Steering Problems: Some owners have reported steering problems, including the outer rim of the steering wheel breaking away from the boss, which can affect the vehicle's steering performance.
- Interior Problems: Some owners have reported interior problems, including issues with the seats and electrical apparatus.
It is worth noting that the 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has only two recalls, related to the absence of front seatbelt audible warnings and secondary hood latch binding

Limited with all options, and I have almost driven 40,000 km on both city and highway with no complaints. It's fast, comfortable, and quiet, making for a really nice ride!
-
This is a great family car for the price.
-
I bought a used '16 Sport from a Hyundai dealership with 27k miles. It has been 2 years now and I have already driven it up to 70k miles. I have had almost no problems with it, thanks to regular oil changes and radiator flushes at 30k and 60k miles as recommended in the manual. Although I had a leaky brake fluid issue which was repaired at 65k, the car is still great. It has an average of 26 mpg and is super comfortable. I would definitely buy another one.
-
Sometimes the car has a whinging noise when taking off, but not all the time. I think the SUV should have come with a V6.
-
Limited awd full load. Almost 40,000 km runs like new. Lots of power and really comfortable. Sturdy and good value.

I purchased a used 2016 Santa Fe Sport with 56,000 miles in February 2021. Over the next year, I put 14,000 miles on it with regular maintenance and found it to be reliable and relatively comfortable. Unfortunately, the engine seized one day on my way to work. I was able to get it to the closest mechanic in limp mode and it was eventually towed to a Hyundai dealership. After inspection, they found metal shavings and informed me that the engine needs to be replaced. I am currently waiting for Hyundai's approval of the replacement under warranty. Although I wish I had done more research prior to purchasing the car, I have learned that the Theta 2.4L engine that comes standard on the Santa Fe is faulty. In fact, there was a court settlement on the engines in 2020 that acknowledged this issue. While I was initially happy with the vehicle, this issue has caused significant financial and convenience costs as I have been renting and borrowing vehicles for the past month. I have given a rating of 2 stars based on my experience over the first year, but I hope that Hyundai will swiftly remedy the situation at their cost under warranty, otherwise my rating will have to be reduced to 1 star.
Junius Dickinson 2024-10-07
I was informed that the engine had sludge. The dealer had provided the last oil change, but unfortunately, the service manager said that the warranty was no longer valid due to my visit to Jiffy Lube. It's a sad situation.
Trace Rippin 2024-09-22
The engine failure occurred between 80 to 100 thousand kilometers.

If you haven't owned a Santa Fe before, you may find the 2016 Sport impressive. However, as someone who owned the 2007 model and decided to upgrade, I was disappointed. The seats in the 2016 Sport are very firm and uncomfortable, and the accelerator pedal is fixed to the undercarriage, which can cause lower back pain when pushing down on it. Additionally, the interior components feel cheap and of lower quality than the 2007 model, with thin carpeting and a lot of plastic. The handle for moving the second-row seating is now located on the side of the seat, which can be annoying and even scratch your leg when getting out of the back seat. The rearview mirrors are also smaller, which limits visibility. The pick-up is not as quick as the previous model, and it can feel sluggish when accelerating. On the plus side, the gas mileage and interior room are good. Unfortunately, there is no ashtray for smokers. The center front console has been reconfigured and seems to have less room, which is disappointing. Overall, I would rate the 2016 Sport a 7 for general local use, but it is very light on the highway and can sway in light winds, which can be concerning. It's also important to note that opening only the two rear windows can cause deafening noise and vibration. While it may be an improvement for some, compared to the 2007 model, it falls short.

This car is amazing! It comes with all the bells and whistles and has the smooth ride of a large, heavier SUV, yet the ease of driving an upscale luxury vehicle. I purchased my vehicle used in 2021 and took out an extended warranty that covers everything. However, I have been experiencing some issues with the vehicle. When increasing speed to 10 mph from a morning start, the car jerks in 1st gear and continues to do so until I pull over, turn the car off completely, and restart it. Sometimes the issue resolves itself, but many times I have had to pull over again, turn the car off, and restart it. It's almost like the brain had to be reset. AAMCO and another approved recommended service facility have told the warranty company that I need a new transmission. We'll see if the warranty company comes through or not.
