2018 Hyundai Santa fe sport problems
The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.
The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.
As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
- VIN: 5NMZUDLB8JH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Q1. The car is shaking and making rumbling noises upon driving and a check engine light is turned on. It seem like the car will abruptly stop and may result in a crash on a highway. Inspection by multiple mechanics indicate that the engine is misfiring and there seems to be an engine oil leakage issue, imbalance of engine or some part of it. The engine configuration is the same as with the engine recalls (under recall number-17V226000) made on 2013 and 2014 models of Hyundai Santa Fe sport which is GDI, 2.4 Liter and was also manufactured in the USA. Yes, the car is available to inspect on request. Q2. The car was shaking and rumbling while driving even at 40mph. We had to pull up to the side because it felt risky and then had to drive slowly to reach home. It was scary and felt life-threatening with a risk of crashing due to abrupt halting of the car. Q3. Yes inspected by the manufacturer- Hyundai. Q4. The check engine light has been coming on and off for over 10 months period. The car has been inspected and checked by multiple mechanics including 2 times visit to the Hyundai service center. They first appeared in Oct 2023 and is an ongoing issue every other month costing me ~$1000. I have been filling up with 4 quarter of engine oil after driving ~200 miles since it was suspected to be an engine oil leakage issue. However, nothing has been resolved and this issue fits the description and problems seen the Hyundai 2013 and 2014 Santa Fe sports- which have been recalled (under recall number-17V226000).

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
- VIN: 5NMZTDLB3JH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The oil light has appeared to light up in the car while I am driving it. The first time was January 2023. I pulled over and checked my oil and had literally no oil in my car. I immediately went to Auto Zone (or Advance/O'Reilly's-I'll check my receipts) and poured 5 quarts of oil in the car and called Hyundai (this was within the timeframe of oil changes). They had me bring my car in and stated they needed to change oil and do an oil consumption test, so I had to drive 1,000 miles, bring my car back in and repeat. In the end, they said nothing was wrong with my car. In early August, this year, the same thing happened and I am having to go through this again.

I have brought to the dealer and this week, will be the four time, which they keep telling me if they can not get a code or necessarily re enact there is nothing they can do. I currently have 97,000 and am bringing it back in this week. PLease help.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-29
- VIN: 5XYZW4LA4JG
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I got my oil changed 98,161 March 1 2024 at mechanic shop Mechanic shop checked oil March 29 2024 at 98,867 a total of 706 miles driven since last oil change. They added 2.5 quarts of oil. So i did my own research online found out the Hyundai 2018 Santa Fe Sport Turbo 2.5 Theta engines has excessive oil consumption problems that will cause Engine to seize/lock up, catch on fire, and other mechanical problems. I have an extended warranty TXXI and TXXC. Oil consumption leaks into the pistons and rod bearings and will cause a knocking in the engine. The oil is already in spark plugs and pcv valve which i replaced. But it will continue to keep happen over and over. I don't want my engine to catch on fire with me in it or at all that's why i am proactive in getting this solved now its already a problem. I contacted Wilson Hyundai dealership they did an 2 month oil consumption test Oil change i had to drive it for 1000 miles It failed. Then they did combuster chamber cleaning i had to drive it for another 1000 miles it failed again. So they submitted claim to corporate that i needed an engine. Corporate declined saying i was over my miles they had the wrong mileage it was a way just to deny me but dealership had correct miles so they could not follow through with that lie. So Corporate made Dealership send another claim in this time corporate denied it saying i was over my warranty. No i was not i started this at 98, 867 miles When 2.5quarts had to be added. I also had to wait a week to get into Wilson dealership because they were backed up in appointments i was at 100,212 miles and so where other Hyundia dealerships others were 1-2 months out in appointments. I had to be in a rental car for 2 months had to pay for it and still pay car note paid for oil testing which i was told i would be reimbursed for repairs and car rentals but they did not honor it nor did they pay goodwill pay for all of my inconvenience 2 month long testing and it failed and they still denied/ lied
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-31
- VIN: 5XYZUDLB1JG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding the significant oil consumption issue with my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. My vehicle was part of a class action lawsuit settlement that provided extended warranties and reimbursement for repairs related to oil consumption defects. I first reported the oil consumption issue in 2022, while my vehicle was still within the warranty period. Despite my multiple attempts over the past two years to have an oil consumption test conducted, Hyundai dealerships only agreed to perform the test in January 2024. The test confirmed that my vehicle has an oil consumption issue. However, Hyundai has refused to cover the necessary repairs, claiming that my vehicle is now past 100,000 miles and out of warranty. This refusal is unfair, as the issue was acknowledged within the warranty period, and the delays in testing were beyond my control. I must consistently add oil to my vehicle several times a month and get oil changes before the recommended timeframe to ensure the vehicle runs smoothly without damage.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-03
- VIN: 5XYZW4LA4JG

No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and after an oil consumption test, it was determined that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The contact was informed that the engine was consuming 2-quarts of oil every 700 miles and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 100,000.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1992-02-25
- VIN: KM8SRDHF8JU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My driver side passenger door will not open from the inside or the outside. You can hear the locking mechanism lock and unlock, however the door is stuck shut. It locked my 2 year old in. Put her in, drove about 15 minutes down the road then was no longer able to open her door. This is obviously not safe for anyone of any age. There are multiple forums of multiple people with the same issue with a malfunction of Hyundais doors. Hyundai needs to make their vehicle safe.
SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-04
- VIN: 5XYZT3LB1JG
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: There has been an ongoing issue with oil consumption and engine failure with my car. The engine didnt give any indication of running hot on the dashboard. It just shut off while driving. I've been to the dealer a few times with no help. On 8/4/2024 my car cut off in the middle of traffic with my daughter in the car twice. It took 3 hours to cool off in 90 + degrees heat. Oil wasn't in the spark plugs but they keep getting shorted out. Oil burns and the engine stalls. I have to replace it which I did but my car shut down. We could've been in a bad accident because it wouldn't drive off immediately. We were stranded on a 2 way country road. This is all horrible because again, we could've been involved in a bad accident on the road we were on. After 5 1/2 hours it finally started and 2 people had to trail me home.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-14
- VIN: KM8SNDHF1JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe SE with 98000. miles lost power while driving, would not accelerate. No warning prior to event. No check engine light prior.Had the vehicle towed to Dealership for diagnostics. Dealership technician pulled codes P0018; P0300; P0302; P0304; P0306. I was told the repairs needed were: Replace left intake camshaft, CVVT, and timing chain tensioner. I had requested the dealership contact the National Consumer Affairs for Hyundai Motor America to put in a claim on the 100,000. mile warranty. After several weeks they declined to fix or offset the repair costs for this claim. they stated the following; "HMA Is Declining To Provide Assistance Due To The Malfunction Being Out Of Warranty Caused By The Time In Service And Mileage Of The Vehicle. No Goodwill Assistance Is Being Offered At This Time." I believe that that this issue is a common occurrence after reading many other customer complaints with the same issues. Why would HMA state "no assistance at this time". It appears that they would rather ignore this concern until the car is past the warranty period.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-02
- VIN: 5XYZUDLB8JG
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: This car is burning excessive amounts of oil. I care for it diligently with regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance. Earlier this summer, Capital Tire and Service confirmed that the engine light was on due to a knock sensor likely caused by low oil. At their advisement I ran a consumption test; 800 miles later the engine was nearly empty of with another engine light signal. This light went off after adding 5 quarts of oil. I am routinely adding extra oil, hoping the engine does not seize, and waiting to see if Hyundai will issue a recall. This vehicle is not safe to drive.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
- VIN: 5NMZUDLBXJH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Every time I get an oil change my oil is low. Have started checking my oil after the oil change, a week or so later and oil is low. I will check it the following day after the oil change and the oil level is fine but then the oil level drops as weeks go by. There are no warning lights that come on, especially the one time I was very low. I’ve been told by the mechanics that this is a common problem with Hyundai. Most recently I had an oil change done 7/15/24. I drove 600 miles so far and the oil is at least half a quart low
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-21
- VIN: KM8SMDHF0JU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: June 21, 2024. During travel at high speed (70mph) on NYS Thruway, engine began making loud noise. sounded like something was loose and flapping. WITHOUT WARNING- no instrument warning lights came on, engine seized and power stopped. At no time during my drive did I observe any instrument warning lights. I was able to get over to the side of the road. The temperature gauge remained unchanged. I was concerned about fire in the engine and got as far away from the car as possible. I was 200 miles into my 300 mile journey. After waiting over an hour to have my car towed to the dealer, I was told that there were 3 Hyundai's with similar issues the week before and that the car would likely need an engine replacement due to "excessive oil consumption". This issue is a safety risk as it could have resulted in catastrophic engine fire, as well as safety issues on the Thruway with other cars and lots of traffic. Engines are backordered. Dealer did a full inspection and submitted paperwork on June 28, 2024 to Hyundai for a decision on whether this is covered under warranty. I was told we would have an answer within a few hours. Have been assigned a "liason" with Hyundai and have been in regular contact. However, Hyundai has asked for an additonal time in order to make a decision. No word as of July 11, 2024.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- VIN: 5XYZTDLB5JG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was told by my mechanic that there was a service memo put out by Hyundai about the possibility of the engine in my vehicle consuming too much oil and they offered a fix. I did everything required. Oil change, oil consumption test etc. My engine is burning 3.3 quarts every 600 miles or so. Hyundai DENIED my claim to have them replace the engine even though it was an issue that they previously acknowledged and other people have had their engine fixed or replaced by Hyundai.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
- VIN: 5NMZTDLB2JH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Oil consumption issue. At anytime the engine could fail and shut off making for unsafe driving and causing an accident. In progress, have done one consumption problem test and about to do a second. Oil light went on after an oil change and had that inspected at local garage. After that oil change within a week or so took back to garage and oil was down again after 735 miles and took it to the Hyundai dealer in Meriden CT after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment. They won't commit to saying it is a problem until they do more costly tests but it is evident it is the same problem my daughter had with jeep until they finally did a recall. Problem began in Feb but I went away and continued with issue when I got back at beginning of May. Have seen the same complaints on the internet and lawsuits etc.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
- VIN: 5XYZTDLB9JG

- Summary: Have 80,000 miles on vehicle , driving down highway , and total engine failure occurred. Luckily there was a highway shoulder I was able to roll onto for safety. No oil light had come on, but mechanic said there was an internal oil leak, and that I had no oil , and engine was blown. There are many known engine failures due to excessive oil consumption in the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport models. They need to offer a recall on this model and replace the engines of thismodel.

As a proud owner of two Honda Accords, a 2010 and a 2014, over the past 8 years, I was initially interested in purchasing a CRV. However, upon discovering that the CRV did not have a CD player, I decided to explore other options. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the CRV can play music files from CDs if they are transferred to a USB in the WAV format. After testing both cars, I found that the CRV is a great car with good and smooth acceleration, fine handling, and comfortable seats similar to the Accord. The music playback was decent, sounding slightly better than my V6 Accord. However, after testing the Santa Fe Sport, there was no comparison. The Santa Fe was faster, as expected with its 240hp compared to the CRV's 190hp. Although the CRV has better fuel efficiency, the Santa Fe's seats were more comfortable and better for my back. Additionally, the Santa Fe has a CD player and a far superior sound system compared to the CRV, with much better clarity and options to change the balance. The cargo space in both cars is about the same, but the CRV's second-row seats fold down flat while the Santa Fe's are up about 6 inches. The Santa Fe has more room in the back for basically the same area, and the spare tire is located outside below the car, which is very convenient. Although the Santa Fe has only one USB port compared to the CRV's four, it has two 12V plugs in front that can be adapted to a USB plug. The Santa Fe's 4-camera setup is very useful in parking, providing a great view as if you are looking down above the car by 20 feet, making parking lines and curbs easy to see. The Santa Fe also has more safety features, but the CRV is fine in that area as well.I really appreciate the convenience of being able to transfer my CD collection onto a USB in WAV format and play it, but I understand that MP3s are also an option. However, the process of transferring CDs to a computer and then copying them to a USB can be quite tedious, especially since I have hundreds of CDs. In my opinion, a CD player is still the better option. Both the Santa and the CRV have Bluetooth capabilities, so using your phone to play music is also an option. I ultimately chose the Santa over the CRV because it has better acceleration, more comfortable seating, a much better sound system, and a moon roof that is twice as big as the CRV's. I didn't use the moon roof much in my Accords, but this one is spectacular and I find having it open to be quite enjoyable! People are always amazed when they see it. Additionally, the reliability of Honda versus Hyundai was an important factor for me, and Honda seems to be better in that area. However, since the Hyundai comes with a 60k and 5-year warranty and I plan to keep it for 3-4 years, that wasn't a major concern. I appreciate that Honda didn't include a $35 CD player in the CRV, which ultimately led me to choose the Santa. I should also mention that while the CRV was cheaper by a few thousand, the discount offered by Honda was far less, maybe $1500? I didn't get a firm price as I wasn't pleased with the CRV. On the other hand, the Freehold Hyundai representative, Tony Rodriguez, was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, answering all of my questions or finding the answer quickly. I had researched the best price on the internet and knew what I wanted to pay. I told Tony all of this, and he went to his manager and came back with $6250 off the MSRP. I was very pleased. He did ask if I was ready to buy today, and I said yes, and I did. An additional plus at Freehold Hyundai is that they have some great coffee there! I must have had six cups! It was actually an enjoyable experience. After I drove home and read some of the features, I got a low battery alert. I went back to the dealer and said the battery needed to be charged. Tony asked if I had the accessory feature on without the engine running for 10 minutes, and I said yes. He replied that after 10 minutes in accessory mode, that warning light comes on.Battery is fine. Don't worry, I know the manual is long, but it's worth it! With over 100 pages, it's packed with useful information that will help you get the most out of your new device. I know it can be overwhelming, but let's take it one step at a time. You'll be a pro in no time!

Our 2013 2.0 AWD Sport Turbo is an amazing performer for the price! While some may nitpick individual features, the overall package is truly hard to beat. This is especially true when comparing it to a Honda CRV with an outdated engine like the one I had in my 2005 Element! While the Bluetooth may have some issues, I still manage to get an impressive 27 MPG at 78 MPH with all-terrain tires that have taken quite a beating. The technology is also top-notch. And let's not forget about the warranty and low maintenance costs. I drove 62k miles before having to replace the front pads, which only cost me $245.

The ride is firm, but the traction is awesome because it doesn't float like some SUVs. Although the gas mileage could be better, I didn't buy it for that reason and knew what I was getting into before purchasing. I love camping, and there's plenty of room for all my stuff, plus I have a trailer hitch for a carrier or trailer if needed. I really like the look and features of my SUV. I have a black base AWD with some options that I wanted, and the warranty is the best! :)

You made a great choice with your purchase! It's wonderful to hear that you're happy with your low-mileage vehicle. As for the extended warranty, it's always important to do your research and make an informed decision. It's great to hear that your car is still running smoothly after almost a year. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

I used to like this vehicle, but unfortunately, my experience with it has not been great. I don't feel very safe when driving it, especially in the rain. A few months ago, while approaching an intersection with a stop sign, I pressed the brake pedal and the car started shaking horribly, which was a very scary experience for me. Luckily, there were no cars in front of me. Additionally, the running noise can be quite annoying. In November, I inquired about the value of the car and was surprised to learn that it had been involved in a minor accident, which the dealer did not disclose to me when I purchased it. I should have asked more questions and been more cautious.

The car has great cargo space and is easy to operate. Although the rear passenger space is a little lacking compared to some other cars in its class, it still provides a comfortable ride. While I have been driving the non-turbo version, I have noticed that it is a bit underpowered. Additionally, the key fobs are a bit heavy and bulky, which can be inconvenient when carrying them around. It would be great if they could opt for something that is more compact and easier to carry. Another thing that I find inconvenient is that the car automatically self-locks after about 60 seconds after the last door has shut, which can make loading and unloading a bit of a hassle. Overall, the car is a great choice for those who prioritize cargo space and ease of use.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I bought brand new in 2018. I absolutely loved the rare color combination and the car drove very solid and smooth. I had it for 70,000 miles and all I needed to do was regular oil changes and replace the 12 volt charger. It was a very reliable car until I had trouble scheduling an oil change with the dealership. Unfortunately, I had to push it slightly past the manufacturer recommendation and the oil light came on in my car. When I checked the dipstick, it was dry. I added oil, but two weeks after the oil change, the light came back on and the dipstick was dry again. It turned out that my car was part of the Hyundai/Kia defective engine class-action lawsuit. I had to continuously add oil every week and the car started steaming at idle with the smell of burning oil. I sold the car before the engine started knocking and fully destroyed itself. Although I loved this car, I recommend avoiding one with the 2.4 L 4 cylinder. Thanks for listening to my story!

I really enjoyed my vehicle until it started using oil. Despite having it serviced at the dealer, it still continues to use oil. When I contacted the service manager, he informed me that Hyundai does not take any action until it uses a quart per thousand or more. He also mentioned a service bulletin that recommends cleaning the engine inside, which costs $300. I had the 60,000-mile service done, which I thought included carbon cleaning. Now, there is a recall on the vehicle due to a fire hazard. I already had a recall and an extended lifetime warranty extension on the motor. What should I do next with this vehicle?
