2022 Hyundai Palisade problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Palisade (Korean: 현대 팰리세이드) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Hyundai Motor Company since late 2018, replacing the Maxcruz (also known as Santa Fe XL outside of South Korea) as the flagship SUV under the Hyundai brand.

The term palisade means a fence of defensive stakes or a series of coastal cliffs — the latter recalling the neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles or the nearly forty mile Hudson River palisade, running north from opposite Manhattan.

Overview

The Palisade debuted at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 28, 2018, having been previewed by Hyundai's Grandmaster concept of June 2018. The Palisade is Hyundai's largest passenger vehicle to date, measuring 4,980 mm (196.1 in) long with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm (114.2 in) inches. It has 21 cu ft (595 L) of cargo space behind the third row and 87 cu ft (2,464 L) with both rows folded down. Like its predecessor, the Palisade features three rows of seating, with seating for up to eight passengers when equipped with a second-row bench seat or seven passengers with the optional second-row captain seat.

The vehicle rated a coefficient drag of 0.33, achieved with an optimised front cooling area with extended internal air guide, aerodynamic underside panels with full front and centre underbody covers, and rear wheel aero deflectors.

Introduction of the right-hand drive model started in December 2020 in Australia and Indonesia. CKD assembly in Russia started in 2020 by Avtotor for domestic sales.

Common 2022 Hyundai Palisade problems

The Hyundai Palisade, a midsize SUV produced by Hyundai, has been generally well-received by consumers since its release in 2020. However, as with any vehicle, there have been reported issues and complaints, particularly regarding the engine.

One of the most common engine problems with the Hyundai Palisade is excessive oil consumption. This issue has been reported across various model years, including the 2020-2021 models, and has affected over 2 million Kia/Hyundai vehicle owners. Excessive oil consumption can lead to various symptoms, such as a persistent drop in oil levels between routine changes, the need for frequent top-offs, and a smoky exhaust. In some cases, engine damage or failure can occur if these symptoms are ignored. The cost to fix excessive oil consumption in a Hyundai Palisade engine can vary significantly, ranging from minor fixes (around $100) to major overhauls (over $4,000).

Another engine-related issue with the Hyundai Palisade is excessive vibrations and shaking, particularly at higher speeds. For instance, some owners have reported experiencing vibrations around 65 mph, which seems to be a common issue across different model years, including the 2022 model year.

In addition to engine problems, the 2020 Hyundai Palisade has been identified as the worst model year due to excessive customer complaints, sudden breaks, and windshield issues. The 2020 model year had a major recall for the low hitch system, which was a fire risk before the fix. It is recommended to avoid the 2020 model year due to these issues.

While there have been reported problems with the Hyundai Palisade, it is important to note that the vehicle has also received positive feedback from many owners. The best way to ensure a reliable and trouble-free ownership experience is to stay informed about potential issues, perform regular maintenance, and address any problems promptly.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-20
  • VIN: KM8R74HE6NU
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: In Sept. of 2023 I had my routine maintenance on my vehicle, oil change.at Tempe Auto Nation Hyundai. My drivers side 3rd row headrest was not staying up and needed to be replaced. I also mentioned to my extremely rude service agent Jake that my vehicle also had oil dripping coming from under the rear. I allowed him to do the oil change but not the headrest. I transferred location to have my vehicle serviced to Camelback Hyundai. My headrest was replaced by Camelback Hyundai. I also mention the oil leak to my service rep. Steve. I was also told that the vehicle was given an inspection. That I would need tires soon. My vehicle didn’t have 25000 miles on it. I purchased the vehicle new. It was also pulling to the right. The pulling was so bad I purchase 4 new tires. Costing over $700. The next day I took the vehicle to get an alignment, only to find out that my shocks/ struts are completely bad and needed to be replaced. I researched the issue with my Hyundai Palisade to see if there had been any recalls. It appears Hyundai is aware of the issue with the defective shocks. I am very disappointed and angry in the amount of time and money this has cost me because of an issue that The Hyundai Corporation knew was occurring. They knew there was an issue with the headrest and also the shocks. Due to the defective shocks, I had to pay for new tires and alignment for a fairly new vehicle that had not reached 25000 miles and still under warranty. I would not have needed new tires so soon an alignment if Hyundai would have corrected the defective shocks.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • VIN: KM8R44HE6NU
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: In April 2022, we purchased a new 2022 Hyundai Palisade from a dealership due to persistent issues with our previous Hyundai Santa Fe, which had ongoing engine problems and recalls. After multiple unsuccessful repairs and software updates on the Santa Fe, we decided to trade it in for the Palisade. Since the purchase, the Palisade has undergone over ten warranty-related repairs. In early 2023, an oil consumption test revealed significant warranty concerns, leading the dealership to keep the vehicle for additional diagnostics. This process lasted nine months and included a full engine replacement. During this time, my husband filed a complaint with Hyundai Corporate, seeking a lemon law buyback or an equivalent trade-in. Hyundai Corporate denied our request, stating that we did not qualify under the lemon law and refusing to buy back or offer a fair trade-in for the vehicle. In June 2024, after nearly a year of repairs, we retrieved the vehicle, only to experience severe issues shortly afterward. The Palisade began jerking and shaking on the highway, and the check engine light came on. The dealership identified a faulty mass air flow sensor and ordered parts for its repair. They assured us it was safe to drive until the repair was completed. However, the next day, the vehicle displayed the same issues. A diagnostic at Auto Zone revealed problems with both the air flow sensor and the fuel injector, indicating unsafe driving conditions. We returned the vehicle to Hyundai College Station, where we received a loaner car while they conducted repairs. During this period, we were informed of a "computer digital data hack" that prevented the dealership from providing documentation of the services performed. When we picked up the Palisade, we were told that only the mass air flow sensor had been repaired, with no work done on the fuel injector or other issues. Currently our vehicle exhibited engine defaults and the engine light came on. It is at Principle Hyundai for repairs

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
  • VIN: KM8R4DHE4NU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The forward safety breaking in this model is going to kill someone, hopefully not me as I am careful to manually disable it every time I start the car. Otherwise it applies the breaks at dangerous moments. Most often it happens when trees overhang the road, sometimes it is overhead road signs. I am not always sure what the cause is but having my breaks applied hard in the middle of merging multi lane highways is most definitively dangerous. I understand that on the 2023 model this can be permanently disabled so I suspect Hyundai is well aware of the problem. This problem has occurred to me at least a dozen times, and as I said I try to be very careful to disable it everyone I start the car.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: KM8R54HE5NU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: During normal course of driving, child safety lock begins clicking. At random times for a varied amount of time between 5 seconds to 20 seconds. I can turn off the clicking by turning off the child safety lock. If I turn back on the child safety lock, the clicking may or may not resume. This is being documented on some online forums with others experiencing the same. Our safety has yet to be tested with this issue as my son is harnessed in and is only [XXX] old, but we are about to move into a booster seat. I am concerned he may be grown enough to have better access to the door and its settings with us moving him into his next seat size. The dealer has confirmed the problem and changed the "child lock switch" but the issue returned within a week. Just before turning in the car to the dealership for fixing this (later to be found unsuccessful), the child safety lock failed to a level where it triggered a dashboard warning about it. Since the "switch" has been replaced I have not seen a warning notification on the dashboard. This has been an ongoing issue for a couple of years now. • Summary: Initially noticed a creaking noise from the rear of the vehicle when going at low speeds and over bumps. The moose got progressively worse over time. The vehicle was first serviced for this issue in September 2023. The Hyundai service center confirmed rear shock shock absorbers and mounts needed replacement. The issue was resolved, but then occured again in March 2024, once again the Hyundai service center confirmed rear shocks were leaking. The left rear shock absorber was replaced again. The same issue occured again in April 2024 and May 2024. The Hyundai service center replaced both rear shock absorbers and insulators in April and replaced passenger rear shock absorber in May. The issue is still persisting after replacement.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-19
  • VIN: KM8R54HEXNU
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was driving down a road with 50mph speed limit when a few of my dash lights began to come on and then go off. Then about 2minutes later, all the dash lights came on, my display screen went black, my power steering wheel froze up. I safely pulled over to a parking lot. Turned the car off. And it wouldn't start back up. I took it to the Jim Click Hyundai in Tucson to get it diagnosed. The alternator was diagnosed as faulty, therefore killing my battery. This is an extremely unsafe circumstance for my 2 year old car to be going through. I cannot believe that this happend. I had to pay for a new battery at the dealership. Now not even 2 months later... my car wouldn't start. I waited 10minutes, it turned on, but it looked like it did a factory reset. I will be contacting the dealership...again. But this must be looked into further. I can't believe a 2 year old car would be having these types of problems.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
  • VIN: KM8R44HEXNU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On April 19, 2024, while driving my 2022 Hyundai Palisade around 10:00 am (82 degrees outside) at a speed of 70 mph with no traffic ahead or behind me, my sunroof exploded. A very loud noise that startled my wife and me while driving. With no traffic on the road i was able to safely pull over and inspect the sunroof/damage. It left a semi round hole of shattered missing glass approximately twelve (12) inches in diameter. I then drove immediately to the nearest Hyundai dealer (Hyundai North - Covington LA). There service tech inspected it and said this issue has been happening often, but it is not covered under warranty, therefore, I would need to file an insurance claim to fix it.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-29
  • VIN: KM8R3DHE6NU
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I had the driver-side wiper replaced in November 2023 due to a recall and have had an issue 3x since then. Twice, snow had accumulated under the wiper arm while driving and caused the wiper motor to stop. That is the exact reason for the recall but it continues to happen regardless. Then the other night while driving 70 on a freeway in heavy rain with wipers on full speed, the driver wiper started hitting the left edge of the windshield a few swipes, slowed down for a few swipes, then stopped completely in the lower position. Had to get off at the next exit as all attempts wouldn't get them working again. Two days later I was able to get into the dealership for a quick "tightening of the bolt" to get the wipers functioning again. The dealership said they knew exactly what the problem was due to so many people having this issue with needing the bolt tightened because it must have worked its way loose. The motor must be too weak and the replacement wiper arm has not remedied the occurrence, leading to some very hazardous situations.

Negative 2022 Hyundai Palisade car reviews

  1. Jalen Bergnaum 2024-02-18

The Palisade has many great features that I enjoy, but there are a few points that may not be suitable for everyone. For instance, the occupancy alarm can be a hassle for pet or child owners, as it goes off if they are left in the car without the keys for even a minute. Additionally, some features may not be ideal for solo drivers, such as the automatic unlocking of all doors when the car is in park or the inability to open the gas cover without the doors being unlocked. These issues can make female drivers feel unsafe. Although I have gone through all the settings, none of them have solved these issues. Another common complaint in forums is the inability to turn off speed camera or red light camera alerts. The gas mileage is not great, with the highest I've gotten being 22 miles per gallon. However, the Palisade is a comfortable vehicle with plenty of room to seat several people comfortably. The captain's chairs in the middle row are especially great, and there is lots of storage space and accessories. Overall, while it may not be the best fit for single mothers or female drivers, the Palisade is still a great car with many impressive features.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my new Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy that I purchased in Oct 2021. Unfortunately, I had some trouble with the navigation system as it was out of date and the 'Freedunload' was corrupted after 6 tries. Additionally, I found that the car needed to run for 45-50 minutes while standing, which was a bit inconvenient. After 5 weeks, I was able to purchase the USB for $25 with $31 shipping, but unfortunately, it didn't work as expected. Although the download went through without a problem, I still had no navigation or maps. The customer service team suggested running it again, which would require another 45-50 minutes of running the car. I'm still waiting for a resolution, but I'm hopeful that it will be resolved soon. Despite these issues, I'm still enjoying my new car and looking forward to exploring all its features. Thank you for listening to my experience!

Positive 2022 Hyundai Palisade car reviews

  1. Johnson Ritchie 2025-01-05

This vehicle was a big decision for our family, but it turned out to be an easy one. When comparing the KIA Telluride to the Hyundai Palisade, I believe the Palisade takes the cake. While there are some reputable names on the list of competitors, the Palisade offers the best value and overall luxury for around the $50k mark. Let me list a few of its features: 5000 LBS towing capacity, birds-eye backup camera (360 with trajectory), head-up display, heated and cooled driver and passenger seats, power-folding second and third rows, paddle shifters, Android Auto and Apple Auto, wireless phone charging dock, navigation, 3 years complimentary BlueLink with multiple driver profiles, 3 years complimentary maintenance, remote start from key fob or BlueLink app, 2 memory settings for driver seat, Napa woven diamond pattern leather in black or ivory, USB 12-volt and 110-watt chargers galore, bonus storage under cargo area, power liftgate, dual sunroof, captain chairs in the middle that recline, and third-row seats that recline. And that's just to name a few of my favorites. Not to mention, over the last 4 years, this car has only had one recall, which is unheard of. This car also has America's best warranty: 5-year 60k mile bumper-to-bumper, 10-year 100k mile powertrain, and 7-year unlimited mile perforation. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision!

  2. Karley Hirthe 2024-11-19

If you're considering buying a new car, I highly recommend taking a look at the Palisades. Not only can you save thousands of pounds compared to luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus, but you'll also get all the same features and quality. In my experience, the Palisades is one of the best vehicles I've owned out of the 30+ I've had.

  3. Aidan Hahn 2024-11-01

Excellent tech, great looking and drives like a dream.

  4. Laurel Rippin 2024-10-27

This Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy is the best vehicle I have bought so far, from start to finish. I absolutely love this vehicle, from its smooth ride to its numerous options and comfortable interior. When I was searching for a new vehicle, this one won in all categories and I am so happy with my purchase. The next comparable vehicle is $20K more expensive.

  5. Kristoffer Walsh 2024-09-12

The Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy is a fantastic vehicle! It's incredibly spacious, fun to drive, and offers great visibility, making it an awesome experience both in the city and on expressways. The heated and COOLED seats are a nice touch! Although, it would be even better if there was a console between the two captain's chairs in the second row. Additionally, it would be great if the wireless CarPlay feature was available in the highest trim. Despite the built-in GPS, having a wireless option would be a nice addition.
