2023 Hyundai Palisade problems
The Hyundai Palisade (Korean: 현대 팰리세이드) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Hyundai Motor Company since late 2018, replacing the Maxcruz (also known as Santa Fe XL outside of South Korea) as the flagship SUV under the Hyundai brand.
The term palisade means a fence of defensive stakes or a series of coastal cliffs — the latter recalling the neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles or the nearly forty mile Hudson River palisade, running north from opposite Manhattan.
Overview
The Palisade debuted at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 28, 2018, having been previewed by Hyundai's Grandmaster concept of June 2018. The Palisade is Hyundai's largest passenger vehicle to date, measuring 4,980 mm (196.1 in) long with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm (114.2 in) inches. It has 21 cu ft (595 L) of cargo space behind the third row and 87 cu ft (2,464 L) with both rows folded down. Like its predecessor, the Palisade features three rows of seating, with seating for up to eight passengers when equipped with a second-row bench seat or seven passengers with the optional second-row captain seat.
The vehicle rated a coefficient drag of 0.33, achieved with an optimised front cooling area with extended internal air guide, aerodynamic underside panels with full front and centre underbody covers, and rear wheel aero deflectors.
Introduction of the right-hand drive model started in December 2020 in Australia and Indonesia. CKD assembly in Russia started in 2020 by Avtotor for domestic sales.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
- VIN: KM8R4DGE4PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was approaching a stop sign, slowing down to around ~20 mph, then gently applied the brakes. All of a sudden, the car stared to lurch forward and the steering wheel shuddered violently as the ABS braking appeared to kick in. As the brakes were applied, the vehicle kept bouncing forward in spurts rather than stopping and it took almost twice as long to stop than it should have. There was a vehicle in front of me and my vehicle was a foot from rear-ending that car despite me slowing in advance and attempting to brake gently. The collision warning system kicked in and I suspect that the vehicle stopped itself, even though I was firmly holding the brake pedal down. My wife experienced te identical situation a week later, so this is becoming very concerning. A quick search on the internet has revealed that many other 2023 & 2024 model year have experienced the same issues, and apparently Hyundai USA is aware of the issue, but do not have a solution to fix it yet.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- VIN: KM8R7DGEXPU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Dear Sir, My car has brake acceleration several times.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
- VIN: KM8R7DGEXPU
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: When driving the car normally suddenly there was an extremely loud sound above us. After pulling off the road and inspecting the vehicle we saw that the front sunroof had shattered. Fortunately the bottom cover had been closed else the glass would have fallen on the driver and passengers and very well could have caused an accident and/or injuries. The remaining glass was bowed upwards and there wasn't any foreign objects inside the roof. At the time of the incident there were no other vehicles around us nor were we under any trees or highway structure. We brought the car to the dealer who claimed that something must have impacted the sunroof however that is not the case. The sunroof glass spontaneously just shattered without any warning. There had been no cracks or chips in the sunroof glass at the time.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20
- VIN: KM8R5DGE2PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Driving on a gravel road (with small pot holes and bumps) down a slight hill caused my brake pedal to shudder making it impossible to slow to a speed I felt comfortable with. I had to remove my foot from the brake pedal and step on it as hard as I could to slow down. This is a serious safety defect and the issue needs to be investigated especially since many consumers have submitted similar complaints.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20
- VIN: KM8R7DGE9PU
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Drivers side seatbelt will sporadically, unlatch on its own. No particular conditions seeming involved. Just buckled one moment, and then unbuckled on its own the next.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-19
- VIN: KM8R7DGE9PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When driving at low speed (<25mph) over uneven terrain, such as bumps in road or small potholes, and applying brakes, the Anti-lock braking system will engage and causing vibrations in the brake and steering column and the car will not slow down. This is documented by a multitude of drivers: [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-19
- VIN: KM8R7DGE5PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Vehicle would not slow when brakes were applied. Traveling under 20mph on dry, level, clear, straight surface. Brakes were applied and no response from vehicle. More pressure was applied, still no response. As vehicle approached another vehicle it issued the proximity crash warning and came to an abrupt stop just inches from a collision. It is uncertain whether the crash warning or the pressure on the brake pedal was ultimately responsible for stopping the vehicle.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-14
- VIN: KM8R5DGE2PU
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Rear struts need to be replaced and vehicle only has 17,200 miles. Seems like a shoddy made vehicle with who knows what other structural problems. I do not trust this vehicle and feel afraid to drive it.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- VIN: KM8R5DGE9PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: A severe safety concern with our 2023 Hyundai Palisade, which has been present since the day we received the vehicle. When braking on uneven roads, the brakes jitter and stutter. This issue does not seem to occur on flat surfaces; however, it is always at lower rate of speed when roads have bumps. On three separate occasions, I have experienced a complete loss of brakes, and my wife has faced the same issue at least five times. When this happens, standing on the brakes does not trigger any response—there are no warning alarms, and the brake system completely fails. The potential to hit another vehicle or pedestrian, or veer into oncoming traffic, is very high, and in fact, I’ve had to swerve into a curb (causing curb rash to the right passenger rim) to avoid a collision. Due to the severity of this problem, I no longer allow my wife to drive the vehicle. I have a appointment on 10/21 with McDonald Hyundai. I have noticed this since day 1 and regret that I did not act sooner! Upon conducting research, I discovered over 21 complaints on one website alone regarding the exact same issue. I am deeply concerned that the mechanics may not be familiar with this specific problem.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
- VIN: KM8R7DGE7PU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Sporadically, when in snow mode, the car refuses to accelerate at all. Moderate pressing of the gas pedal or completely flooring it, the car will not respond and accelerate. The only way to fix this is to change it out of snow mode. This does not happen 100% of the time when in snow mode. It is sporadic. This has happened multiple times to me and it always seems to occur when in the middle of making a turn, while accelerating, while in snow mode. The car will accelerate to about 25 or 30 mph and then all power is completely lost. The tachometer does not show any change and the gauge that shows acceleration power being sent to the individual wheels, at 0. This is extremely dangerous and has almost caused me to get in multiple accidents.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-06
- VIN: KM8R5DGE4PU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Driving with adaptive cruise control engaged in 45mph zone. Without intervention the cruise setting jumped to 90mph. I was able to press the pause bar to cancel it. Next I was able to re engage cruise normally without a repeat issue. There's been no outside inspection, or assessment. So far it's happened only once. The runaway speed was controllable. We're driving with extra care.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
- VIN: KM8R7DGEXPU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was driving about 40mph on a sunny, dry day, and approached a red light. I depressed the brake, and rather than stopping, the brake vibrated and the car continued to coast an additional 2 car lengths. On a second occasion, about 2 months later, I was driving about 25mph on a sunny, dry day, and I came to an intersection. I applied the brake, and again, rather than stopping, the brake vibrated and the car coasted into the intersection. There was a car coming, so I had to honk the horn repeatedly to alert the other driver that my car was not stopping. I took the car to the dealership. They have been unable to reproduce the problem, so they insist that nothing has happened and they want me to take the car back.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
- VIN: KM8R2DGE9PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Under certain braking conditions, going over gaps in the road/bumps/railroad tracks and using the brakes, the brakes will lock up and stop working. The ABS seems to stop working, brake shakes hard and the car will not stop at times. Issue can occur at any speed, seems to be more common in lower speeds, under 25. Mentioned problem to specific dealership in Colorado and they did not seem to care about safety issue. Going to other dealership to have problem looked at. Appears to be an issue for certain 2023-2024 Hyundai Palisades in looking at online forums. Hyundai does not appear to have acknowledged this issue yet.
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
- VIN: KM8R7DGE4PU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When applying the brakes at slower speeds the over-sensitive ABS violently activates causing temporary brake loss and shaking of the vehicle. This has been addressed at Hyundai dealership and symptoms were confirmed from the service advisor. I was told that this isn’t normal operation per Hyundai. Regarding another issue. The transmission will shutter combined with 3-5 second delay when up-shifting during acceleration. I was told by Hyundai dealership that is also “normal”. If this is “normal” then why has this concern just started developing. If this is normal, why hasn’t this transmission done it from day one when we purchased the car. We are not happy Hyundai’s attempt to sell us on this falsehood! These are definitely safety concerns and should be addressed.
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
- VIN: KM8R4DGE8PU
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Palisade. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a loud popping sound coming from the roof of the vehicle. The contact drove the vehicle off to the side of the road to inspect the roof and became aware that the center of the sunroof glass had shattered. The contact immediately pulled the shade to prevent glass from falling inside the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer; however, the contact called a local dealer to schedule the replacement of the sunroof glass. The dealer advised the contact to schedule an appointment with an automotive glass specialist. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 22,602.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-23
- VIN: KM8R7DGE0PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: At times, when going over bumps, the brake pedal feels hard and hard to push to the floor. Other times, the brake pedal shakes and the vehicle feels as if it is shaking. The vehicle does not stop when brake pressure is applied. At other times the brakes lock up and I skid across pavement. There are never ABS lights on the dash though. I have replicated this issue with a technician in the vehicle. The dealership has documented that they have been able to recreate this issue multiple times. The dealership even replicated the issue in a demo model the sales manager drives. This vehicle is unsafe. I have slid out into oncoming traffic multiple times now. I almost ran into my own home because the brakes would not work. At times, my brakes lock up going over uneven surfaces. The issue occurs frequently in parking lots, where I am afraid to hit a pedestrian. The vehicle drive, other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians are put at risk by this safety issue.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
- VIN: KM8R7DGE9PU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The ABS braking problem has not been mentioned to Hyundai or any other company or organization to date as it was just recently experienced. I recently put unscreened millings on the road end of my gravel driveway. When coming to a slow stop before entering the public road I now experience the brake vibration or chattering with deminished braking responce. Fortunately, I have not experienced this while driving on a public road in 35,000 miles.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- VIN: KM8R3DGE0PU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Was driving on the freeway today when I heard a crazy exploding sound. I thought it was a gunshot. Then I heard stuff falling off the roof of my car. Apparently my sunroof spontaneously exploded which was Terrifying!!!
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-28
- VIN: KM8R7DGE7PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Leaving parking lot. Approaching Exit to street to turn right. Going slow and applying the brakes. Hit a small crack or pothole in the pavement and the ABS kicks in. Brake shutters when abs occurs, but braking pressure is very light and car almost rolls into intersection. I think I had to quickly release brake and step on brake again to be able to stop the vehicle. It happened very quickly Vehicle is 1 year old. No lamps or codes. Happened again in similar situation. Trying to stop at lower speed. Hit a bump or loose gravel. Abs kicks in and braking pressure is drastically reduce even after getting past the crack or gravel
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- VIN: KM8R7DGE9PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I steep on the brakes when I was coming to a gas pump when I did that the car started to shake. It's seams it's was the ABS I thought the car was not going to stop. I had to press the brakes all the way down for the car it stop. I thought for sure I was going to hit the car in front of me.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-21
- VIN: KM8R44GE5PU
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Back seat window glass (both sides) are cloudy/foggy to such a degree that it obscures visibility, especially in direct sunlight. While backing out of driveway, could not see a child on bicycle and nearly hit him. He yelled out loud enough that I slammed on my brakes. Have had similar incidents when backing out of parking spaces and turning corners. Dealership replaced driver side with new glass about 10 days ago but new glass is just has defective as original glass. Refer to attached photos. The cloudiness is not as evident in low light conditions. First noticed it a few days after purchasing the vehicle new in August of 2022 but thought it would clear up on its own. Incident with boy on bicycle occurred on 8/21/24. Obviously this is a defect in the glass manufacturing and is an unsafe and dangerous condition. No one at Dealerships seem to take it seriously.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-12
- VIN: KM8R74GE6PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When slowing down from a slow speed the car will begin to shake. This is intermittent.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
- VIN: KM8R3DGE1PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The ABS seems to kick in over aggressively. It will kick in and the brake pedal gets all jiggly on slight changes in road situations. For example, going into my driveway, driving over a manhole cover, etc. This has felt dangerous in several instances if I'm slowing down for a red light and the ABS kicks in and significantly increases my stopping distance.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
- VIN: KM8R24GE2PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When hitting a pothole or bump at low speeds the braking system fails and does not brake. As if the abs system engages and leaves me going further when i need to stop. This problem always happens on the same street where i live
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
- VIN: KM8R7DGE0PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My wife nearly crashed into a vehicle because the brakes on her 2023 Palisade would not work! I researched and she is not the only one this has happened to. It seems to be a known issue but there is no recall assigned to this, which is a huge safety concern for my wife and for our daughters, which were in the car when this happened. It could have been much worse if the brakes failed and the car were to drift into cross-traffic! This needs to be addressed immediately before someone gets seriously injured or even dies! In the meantime, our Palisade will not be driven.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that your car seems to be in great shape! It looks really comfortable and runs really well.

You'll be glad you bought it!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my new car. I've only had it for two days, but I'm already loving it! The black 20 inch wheels and black grill give it a luxurious and sporty look that I can't get enough of. I'm also really enjoying the bigger size. I traded in my Santa Fe Sport 2.0 Turbo, which was really tough to say goodbye to.

I recently leased a 2023 Hyundai Palisade from Chapman Hyundai in Phoenix, AZ and had a great experience with Alexandra's service! The Palisade rides smoothly and I'm excited to enjoy the extra space it provides!

I absolutely adore the Ultimate Calligraphy! When the car is full with 7 passengers, it feels safe and stable. The design and look are stunning, and I've had heads turn to look at it. The feeling of driving in a futuristic car interior is just amazing. The power is there, and pressing the gas hard doesn't cause any vehicle shaking or drifting right/left. You really need to try the self-driving mode - it's so comfortable for long drives. The sound system is out of this world! And of course, all the high technology packed inside this car in terms of safety features and the Bluelink Smartphone App (which allows you to remotely start and control a bunch of things in the car) are amazing. Don't forget to check out the impressive warranty period. The gas consumption depends on how you drive, but it's important to remember that it's a 7-seater, not a Yaris Toyota. Overall, I have no complaints - it's an impressive vehicle, and haters are just going to hate.

Thank you for considering Hyundai cars. However, I would like to share some concerns regarding the Palisade Limited model. It is important to note that there have been some reported issues with reliability and safety, and some customers have expressed dissatisfaction with the level of customer service provided by the corporation and dealership. Please keep these factors in mind when making your decision.

I recently purchased the Calligraphy AWD. As someone who has driven luxury SUVs for years, such as the BMW X5, I needed a spacious 3rd row for my growing family. Unfortunately, options were limited. I considered the Lexus GX and LX, Cadillac XT6 and Escalade, but my spouse was really drawn to the Palisade Calligraphy. Despite Hyundai having the worst interest rates and no incentives for top tier buyers on this model, we decided to go for it. Although the over MSRP dealer charges and 8% interest rate for top tier credit of 750-800 made it a mortgage payment for some people, costing me $73k over the term of 6 years, we still chose to buy instead of lease. Here in South Florida, dealers go over MSRP on this model, but I negotiated as close to MSRP as possible. I put 5k down and still paid about $2k over MSRP in the end, which was not ideal. If you don't need the very spacious third row badly and won't use all the tech/added features the Calligraphy has, I would recommend buying a luxury brand instead. Overall, it was not the best deal I've ever gotten, especially given the current state of the economy, but I am still happy with my purchase.

I've owned this car for about 18 months now, a SEL version with premium package. I was initially attracted to its sleek look, spacious interior, and advanced infotainment system. This is my first Hyundai, and I usually buy a new car every 4-5 years. However, I must say that this will be my last Hyundai. Despite the model being almost $50k, it is poorly designed and cheaply made. I have encountered several issues, but the biggest ones are: 1) I spilled coffee in the cup holder, and it leaked through to the cable connections underneath, shorting a connection and disabling the USB for CarPlay. Unfortunately, everything goes through the radio, so I had to replace the entire radio, which cost almost $2k to repair. Despite my complaint, Hyundai NA said it was not their problem. 2) The interior and exterior panels are cheaply made and damage easily. For instance, one of the interior panels cracked substantially just by my son kicking his shoe off and hitting the panel under the seat belt. For a car this young, these are way too many issues. I have decided to stick with Mazda, Honda, or Toyota, as I have had great luck with those brands.
