2024 Hyundai Palisade problems
The Hyundai Palisade (Korean: 현대 팰리세이드) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Hyundai Motor Company since late 2018, replacing the Maxcruz (also known as Santa Fe XL outside of South Korea) as the flagship SUV under the Hyundai brand.
The term palisade means a fence of defensive stakes or a series of coastal cliffs — the latter recalling the neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles or the nearly forty mile Hudson River palisade, running north from opposite Manhattan.
Overview
The Palisade debuted at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 28, 2018, having been previewed by Hyundai's Grandmaster concept of June 2018. The Palisade is Hyundai's largest passenger vehicle to date, measuring 4,980 mm (196.1 in) long with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm (114.2 in) inches. It has 21 cu ft (595 L) of cargo space behind the third row and 87 cu ft (2,464 L) with both rows folded down. Like its predecessor, the Palisade features three rows of seating, with seating for up to eight passengers when equipped with a second-row bench seat or seven passengers with the optional second-row captain seat.
The vehicle rated a coefficient drag of 0.33, achieved with an optimised front cooling area with extended internal air guide, aerodynamic underside panels with full front and centre underbody covers, and rear wheel aero deflectors.
Introduction of the right-hand drive model started in December 2020 in Australia and Indonesia. CKD assembly in Russia started in 2020 by Avtotor for domestic sales.

Common 2024 Hyundai Palisade problems
The Hyundai Palisade, released in its 2020 model year, has been a popular choice for consumers looking for a midsize SUV. However, as with any vehicle, there have been reported issues with the Palisade's engine. Here are some of the common problems based on complaints from owners:
- Rough Idling and Vibrations: Several owners have complained about increased vibrations while driving their Palisade, particularly at higher speeds. For instance, a thread from the Palisade forums discusses an issue with the Hyundai Palisade experiencing vibrations at speeds of around 65 mph. This issue seems present in different models, including the 2022 model year.
- Engine Noise: Some owners have reported engine noise, such as knocking sounds, which can signal low oil pressure and potential damage. This issue may be related to excessive oil consumption or other engine problems.
- Maintenance Schedule: Some owners have expressed concerns about the Hyundai/Kia maintenance schedule, suggesting that the recommended 7,500-mile oil change interval is too long for the direct port injection engine and could lead to engine problems.
The costs to fix these engine problems vary depending on the cause. For instance, minor fixes, such as a faulty PCV valve, might only cost around $100. However, more serious concerns, such as replacing piston seal rings or oil control rings, can cost between $1,000 and $5,700 for a gas engine. In the worst-case scenario, such as needing a complete engine replacement, the costs can reach over $4,000.
It is important to note that not all Palisade owners have experienced these engine problems, and many have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider them when making their purchasing decision.
What is the problem with the Hyundai Palisade in 2024?
Engine and engine cooling: Engine: Hard parts internal/mechanical. Recall no. Hyundia Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2024 Palisade vehicles. The engine valve springs may break while driving, which can result in a loss of drive power and possibly create a hole in the engine block.
What is the biggest problem with the Hyundai Palisade?
Hyundai has issued a safety recall that applies it over 4,000 units of the Palisade built during the 2024 model year. The SUVs included in the campaign could experience a valve spring failure, a problem that can cause major engine damage including puncturing a hole in the block.
What is the recall on the 23 24 Palisade?
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Palisade Tucson, 2023 Sonata, Elantra, and Kona vehicles. The electronic controller for the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly may contain damaged electrical components that can cause the pump controller to overheat.
What transmission is in the 2024 Palisade?
8-speed automatic transmission
All 2024 Hyundai Palisade models come with a smooth-running 3.8L GDI V6 engine that gets up to 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque and an 8-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC that can be manually shifted with steering-wheel-mounted paddles.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
- VIN: KM8R7DGE4RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: for no reason, when driving at less than 20 MPH and starting to brake, the brake system will fail to stop the vehicle. Feels like the ABS model has gone nuts modulating, but even with the brake pedal fully pressed, you can only hope the vehicle will stop prior to hitting something or being hit. It does not matter the road conditions, as my issues have always been on smooth roads. There is no indication as when this problem will happen, and no fault indicators are present. After each incident, the vehicle brake system will function normally until the next incident occurs. This has happened on multiple occassions.
STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
- VIN: KM8R7DGE9RU
- Components: STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When the brakes are applied while in low speeds and you are driving on rough pavement or you hit a bump in the road the car skids and won't come to a stop. It feels like the ABS has kicked in. There are a few brick roads in my town. In just one block when I stop it will skid almost completely through the stop sign. I have to brake almost halfway before I get to the stop sign. The other day I was driving in the middle of town going around 25 mph and went to stop at a stoplight. My car hit a patch of rough pavement and skidded almost into the back of the car in front of me. I have only had my Palisade for a few months and the paint is chipping terribly. I have the night edition and 2 weeks after having it there were tons of chips in the grill. I do not live on gravel nor do I travel on gravel often. This should not be happening this soon. Why is there not a protectant applied? Why is my paint chipping so soon?
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-15
- VIN: KM8R7DGE9RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was slowing to a stop for a red light while in traffic. My foot was lightly on the brake. I felt a bump on the front right I think, like perhaps I had hit a small pothole. The pavement was dry. It was about 100 degrees. My car lurched forward. I applied firm pressure to the brake. It made no difference as far as slowing the car. The brakes seemed locked. I thought I was going to hit the car in front of me. There were no warning lights on the dash. I released the brake for a very brief moment and reapplied firm pressure. I managed to stop my car closer than I would have chosen to the car in front of me.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
- VIN: KM8R7DGE9RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: When applying the brakes as you approach a stop light or vehicle etc.. the vehicle will apply or go into an ABS event and lock you out of the brake pedal so you can't apply any more pressure to the pedal and will not stop the vehicle without a collision. I have had this happen several times and have had to steer into the ditch or oncoming lane to avoid an accident. This has occurred at slow speeds as well as highway speeds. This is a very dangerous situation and will cause an accident
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-05
- VIN: KM8R7DGE1RU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
- Summary: Multiple problems since purchasing brand new 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy Edition last November. Within the first 2 weeks we experienced electrical problems and the entire dashboard add monitor had to be replaced. 2nd- recall on the engine and was replaced, recall issued in February and was never notified, only found out in August when taken in for complimentary service oil change. 3rd- engine light came on 1 week later. 4. Paint was damaged and mirror was cracked while at dealership. 5. Condensation in both headlights. 6. 2nd cracked windshield since purchase. 6. The driver side window does not roll up all the way. I absolutely do not feel safe in this car with my children and elderly parents. First and Last Hyundai. Nothing but constant problems. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-10
- VIN: KM8R3DGE9RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The car fails to completely brake when going slowly over uneven pavement. The car, steering wheel and brakes shake before stopping and coming to a complete stop.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
- VIN: KM8R7DGE0RU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: 2024 Hyundai Palisade Driving at city speeds the sunroof exploded. It was so loud, sounded like a gun was shot inside the vehicle. The local law enforcement was contacted and inspected the damage. Sunroof was taped and a bag was placed over the glass and taped to be able to drive to the local dealership. Hyundai determined the sunroof was defective and replaced it.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
- VIN: KM8R7DGE7RU
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: In the past couple months the drivers side seatbelt retractor has failed twice requiring it to be fully replaced in both circumstances. In these situations the seatbelt becomes fully loose and can’t be safely used. They blame it on over extending the seatbelt which makes no sense as the retractor should not even fail in an accident.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- VIN: KM8R4DGE8RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: In the last two weeks my car has experienced issues with braking a total of 5 times. The issue seems to happen when there may be an uneven road, pothole, or gravel. On 3 of the 5 occurrences, I was at a 4-way intersection with a car full of children. I was going no more than 10-15 mph at most because its a residential street and had ample time to stop. Upon pressing the brakes, my car slowed down a bit but then the brakes failed and I rolled through the interesection, having to blare my horn to warn others I could not stop. This could have been a deadly event had I needed to stop at a major intersection or to avoid a collision. I will be contacting the dealership today, however I have noticed there are multiple complaints regarding this issue and many lawyers discussing building a class action lawsuit as Hyundai fails to address the issues.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
- VIN: KM8R7DGE7RU
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: With less than 2,000-miles on the vehicle, the second-row driver's side seatbelt came unfastened from the lower anchor point of the vehicle. There was no indication that this would be an issue until a passenger sat in the seat and tried to buckle up, only to find the seat belt was hanging loose. Fortunately there was no injury associated to this failure but it is concerning as a critical safety device failed due to what can only be imagined as careless oversight in assembly.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-16
- VIN: KM8R7DGE7RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Multiple times approaching a crosswalk and stop sign at my kid’s school going about 15 mph and started to apply the brakes as we went over some slightly uneven ground The car lurched forward repeatedly as the brakes were applied, bouncing forward in spurts rather while I applied the brakes with great force, the car took twice as long to stop than it should have. I went well past the crosswalk and stop sign despite beginning to brake with plenty of time to stop. This is so far from how an ABS system is supposed to work and something that is potentially dangerous.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-02
- VIN: KM8R7DGE1RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was driving on a bit uneven surface, a temporary bridge, at low speed ~25mph. I pressed brakes to stop but the car started shaking and didnt stop as the brakes completely froze. I could have rammed into the car in front. I quickly released the brakes and pressed again with full force in fraction of a second and it somehow worked this time. It was a very scary experience with me and my family in car. This bridge was on a river and could have had catastrophic results for me any my family. This is a very serious safety issue. I see a lot of complaints from Palisade owners facing this issue online.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-06
- VIN: KM8R7DGE0RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The ABS starting shaking and skipping the car while braking when I wasn’t even in a situation where ABS needed to be used. It is available for inspection. When this happened it caused braking to be worse and less responsive than what would have happened with normal braking. The car is currently at the dealership being looked over. As this is unsafe when I have a baby in the car. No warning lights or anything. Which is also concerning since the ABS light should be triggered when the ABS system is in use.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- VIN: KM8R7DGEXRU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When the brakes are applied on uneven road at slow speeds, the brake pulse violently but does not stop. This creates a very dangerous situation. This happened several times and when my daughter was driving the car, came within an inch of rear ending someone. I had a 2021 Palisades Calligraphy which we drove on the same roads and this was never an issue.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Fire: 1
- VIN: KM8R7DGE1RU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Engine fire caused by AC compressor. On 09/28/24, at 1700 miles and in the parking lot of a restaurant, smoke suddenly began filling the cabin and when I looked out the window the entire car's front was engulfed in a gray smoke. The overpowering smell was of burning wire insulation, plastic, and rubber. I immediately shut the car off, popped the hood, and was ready to run into the restaurant for a fire extinguisher when I noticed the large cloud of smoke was dissipating, but the heat was still incredibly extreme and a good amount of smoke was still pouring from the engine. My sister-in-law entered the car to retrieve her purse, and her eyes instantly started watering and she had a headache for several days. She is still complaining of her chest burning. After calling roadside, the AAA driver stated the car really smelled badly burned, and hauled the car off to the dealer of purchase. The fire was on 09/28/24 (a Saturday), and on Monday, 09/30/24, I submitted what took place to Hyundai. This is when the fraud started and Hyundai, with the help of the dealer, have purposely done everything possible to conceal the fire. I have full details of this fraud, and it's simply shocking. I am awaiting information regarding the restaurant's video recordings.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
- VIN: KM8R7DGE8RU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: We were driving on a highway between two towns with no other cars on either side of the highway and our sunroof exploded. We pulled to the side of the road thinking there was a gunshot or a tire exploded to discover the shattered sunroof. Thankfully we had the slide closed and it contained the glass pieces. The sunroof class was pointed upward. No rocks were bouncing around and nothing hit our windshield. The dealership warranty manager says it was a road hazard but there was no hazard to be had around us.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- VIN: KM8R4DGE3RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I bought a 24 Palisade Ltd Few month into ownership, I was approaching a stop light going 10 mph and started to apply the brakes as I passed over some slightly bumpy ground. The car lurched forward repeatedly as the brakes were applied, bouncing forward in spurts rather than stopping and taking twice as long to stop than it should have; I was one foot from rear-ending a biker and a car in front of me despite beginning to break with plenty of time to stop - this is so far from how an ABS system is supposed to work and something that will get you in a wreck), Hyundai dealership has told me that, they dont see a problem and fixed nothing.
WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- VIN: KM8R7DGE4RU
- Components: WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While braking at a stop, and encountering a pothole (has occurred even without a pothole on straight surfaces), it feels like the is ABS kicking in to avoid wheel lockup, and apparent slowing which rapidly mimics activities that could cause hard braking. Similar to when the car is on ice/snow and the car pulses to stop. Unsafe, as the vehicle does not top when intended and forces the vehicle to take longer to stop with the potential to involuntarily enter an intersection. I have had this occur multiple times. I am fearful that I will potentially have an accident with my grandchildren in the car. Dealership is aware of multiple issues, but cannot duplicate and thus will not resolve. No warning lights, or notifications occurred. Has been discussed on 2024 Palisade Calligraphy forums. Review other reviews on reddit where other models have been affected.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
- VIN: KM8R7DGE9RU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: After I purchased within a month I was approaching a parking spot and I applied brakes. They wouldn’t press down and the car start jumping forward. I pressed hard and the car would not stop and I hit a curb and it finally stopped. Second time: Approaching a stop sign I went over an un even are in the asphalt and the car jumped forward and I applied brakes and it jumped around and would not stop. I took to purchasing dealership and told them and showed them online issues others were having. They gave a rental for a week and called and said to come and get the car they could not duplicate the issue. I told them I was afraid and didn’t want to hit someone or a person. They said unless they could duplicate there was nothing they could do. I changed dealerships and plan to take to them for the issue. It has happened to me on a dirt road approaching the entrance to make a turn. I am making sure before I take back that I can have someone ride with me and show them. I don’t want them telling me they cannot duplicate again. It is very scary and if a pedestrian was in front of me I have no control of the car when this happens.

- Summary: Whenever the car goes over bumps in the road at low speeds the ABS system activates. You can feel a “grinding” sensation emanating from the brake pedal. When it happens, if you try to engage the brakes, they don’t engage for several seconds. It happened to me recently with my kids in the car and we almost rolled into a busy intersection and could have been seriously injured.

Loaded with features at a price well below the competition. Although, it is important to note that there have been some electronic glitches. The safety systems have been known to brake randomly and accelerate at a stop light on their own, which can be concerning. In the first 20k miles, there were some issues with the rear differential, AWD system, and rear suspension, but they were promptly addressed and resolved.

The 2023 Palisade Ultimate Caligraphy has some great features, but also some drawbacks. On the positive side, it is roomy and luxurious, with heated seats in the front and middle rows, adaptable cruise control, and excellent 360 camera views. However, there are some negative aspects to consider. For example, it is not possible to lock the vehicle if you manually start it, and in extremely cold temperatures of -40 to -50 degrees, the 10-minute intervals for starting the vehicle are not sufficient. It is frustrating that the designers of this product did not take into account the harsh Canadian winters. I have previously raised this issue when I purchased my first Palisade in 2019, but unfortunately, it seems that the technical team has been unable or unwilling to make this minor change. Thank you for your understanding.

I recently purchased the Calligraphy AWD. As someone who has driven luxury SUVs for years, such as the BMW X5, I needed a spacious 3rd row for my growing family. Unfortunately, options were limited. I considered the Lexus GX and LX, Cadillac XT6 and Escalade, but my spouse was really drawn to the Palisade Calligraphy. Despite Hyundai having the worst interest rates and no incentives for top tier buyers on this model, we decided to go for it. Although the over MSRP dealer charges and 8% interest rate for top tier credit of 750-800 made it a mortgage payment for some people, costing me $73k over the term of 6 years, we still chose to buy instead of lease. Here in South Florida, dealers go over MSRP on this model, but I negotiated as close to MSRP as possible. I put 5k down and still paid about $2k over MSRP in the end, which was not ideal. If you don't need the very spacious third row badly and won't use all the tech/added features the Calligraphy has, I would recommend buying a luxury brand instead. Overall, it was not the best deal I've ever gotten, especially given the current state of the economy, but I am still happy with my purchase.

Thank you for considering Hyundai cars. However, I would like to share some concerns regarding the Palisade Limited model. It is important to note that there have been some reported issues with reliability and safety, and some customers have expressed dissatisfaction with the level of customer service provided by the corporation and dealership. Please keep these factors in mind when making your decision.

I've owned this car for about 18 months now, a SEL version with premium package. I was initially attracted to its sleek look, spacious interior, and advanced infotainment system. This is my first Hyundai, and I usually buy a new car every 4-5 years. However, I must say that this will be my last Hyundai. Despite the model being almost $50k, it is poorly designed and cheaply made. I have encountered several issues, but the biggest ones are: 1) I spilled coffee in the cup holder, and it leaked through to the cable connections underneath, shorting a connection and disabling the USB for CarPlay. Unfortunately, everything goes through the radio, so I had to replace the entire radio, which cost almost $2k to repair. Despite my complaint, Hyundai NA said it was not their problem. 2) The interior and exterior panels are cheaply made and damage easily. For instance, one of the interior panels cracked substantially just by my son kicking his shoe off and hitting the panel under the seat belt. For a car this young, these are way too many issues. I have had great luck with Mazda, Honda, and Toyota, and I will stick with them in the future.
