2012 Hyundai Genesis problems
The Hyundai Genesis (Korean: 현대 제네시스) is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Hyundai Motor Company over two generations from 2008 until 2016, before it was renamed the Genesis G80. It is a five-passenger, four-door, rear- or all-wheel-drive sedan.
Introduced in concept form at the 2007 New York International Auto Show, and internally designated as the BH model, the Genesis was expected to cost $533 million to develop. Hyundai began marketing the first generation Genesis worldwide (except in Europe) in 2008 as a "premium sports sedan". The second generation Genesis (model DH) debuted in Seoul, Korea in November 2013 followed by the 2014 North American International Auto Show and Toronto Auto Show.
On 4 November 2015, Hyundai announced that the name Genesis and Hyundai's second generation luxury model would move to a new and separate luxury division, Genesis Motor. The Genesis — as a Hyundai model — was replaced in actuality in 2017 when the second generation Hyundai Genesis was renamed the G80. The move followed the model's success in the luxury market, paired with consumer acceptance of the Genesis nameplate.

Common 2012 Hyundai Genesis problems
The 2012 Hyundai Genesis has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. The most significant issue is related to the engine, which has caused stalling in several instances. This problem has been reported to occur around 51,400 miles and has been given a severity rating of 9.5 out of 10, indicating that it is a serious concern for 2012 Genesis owners. The cause of this engine stalling problem remains unknown, and there are no known solutions for repairs, making it a significant issue for potential buyers to be aware of.
In addition to the engine stalling problem, other issues have been reported by 2012 Hyundai Genesis owners. For instance, some owners have experienced difficulty when trying to pump gas, with the gas pump shutting off prematurely. This issue has been attributed to a fouled evaporator canister, which restricts airflow during the filling process. Replacing the evaporator canister can potentially resolve this problem, but it requires accessing the assembly located behind the back seat and beneath the trunk, which can be a challenging task.
Another issue reported by 2012 Hyundai Genesis owners is related to the seat cooling system, which has been described as weak. This can be a significant safety concern, as it may distract the driver and potentially lead to accidents.
Lastly, some 2012 Hyundai Genesis owners have reported that the car stalls randomly, albeit infrequently. This issue has been reported to occur after several years without any problems, making it unpredictable and difficult to diagnose.
While the 2012 Hyundai Genesis has been reported to have these common problems, it is essential to note that many owners have not experienced these issues. The car has been praised for its luxurious interior, smooth ride, and high-quality audio systems. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems, especially if they are considering purchasing a used 2012 Hyundai Genesis. It is always recommended to have any used car inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase to identify any potential issues and ensure that the vehicle is in good working condition.

Problem has been reproduce by a technician. Component has been checked by a technician. There are no warning lights or other symptoms before failure.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-01-01
- VIN: KMHGC4DDXCU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Driver's side passenger door lock does not electronically function--either by key fob or by driver's control. Passenger door must be manually locked and unlocked. This defect was present from time car was purchased new but was only discovered after car was out-of-warranty since passenger door had never been used until grandchildren began using back seat. This represents an safety hazard in the event that back-seat passenger needs to exit car quickly via electronic means. We are aware that this defect is quite common among 2012 Hyundai Genesis owners. Hyundai Motors of America knows that this was a manufacturing design defect but thus far, is unwilling to support warranty repair. Warranty repair is quite costly, averaging $700-900, and this is likely the reason why HMA has elected to publicly hide and ignore the issue.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-12
- VIN: KMHGC4DD5CU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brakes are spongy/soft - My car has been inspected by a Hyundai dealership and an ABS control module replacement has been recommended at cost of $2901. A safety recall campaign was issued in 2012 to include "certain 2009-2012MY Genesis (BH) produced from April 30, 2008 to March 28, 2012 (Recall #114). On May 9, 2022, TSB #22-BR-001H-1 was issued. My car's VIN indicates that my car was produced March 30, 2012 and the repair under the "extended warranty" has been denied because my car was produced two days later and therefore not included in the safety recall. I have reached out to Hyundai and I have a case manager assigned to me.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-21
- VIN: KMHGC4DD7CU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Vehicle shuts off at red lights or when making very low speed turns. Indicator on dash shows 'KEY' symbol and sometimes battery symbol. I then have to shift to park or neutral to push button restart vehicle. Other times I'm parked with vehicle idling and it simply shuts off. This issue puts me at risk because it shuts off while driving on public roads with other vehicles. The repair shop can't find out why this is happening and the vehicle flashes no check engine light and there are no stored codes. This began a couple months after I had a new battery installed in the vehicle and put a new battery in the key fob. Vehicle now, no longer recognizes key fob. I have to manually insert key fob into a key fob slot inside vehicle in order to crank it. This seems to be an issue with the 2012 model Genesis, as I have read on several online forums of other owners experiencing the same problem.

2012 Hyundai Genesis recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2012 Hyundai Genesis.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2012 Genesis vehicles manufactured August 1, 2011, to April 30, 2012, and 2011-2013 Equus vehicles manufactured July 10, 2011, to June 12, 2012. The windshield wiper motor cover seal on the affected vehicles may degrade allowing corrosion on the wiper motor's circuit board. The corrosion can cause intermittent or total loss of wiper function.
- Consequence: Inoperative wipers during inclement weather can decrease driver visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper motor cover and seal, free of charge. The recall began on April 22, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 140.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FLUID
- Summary: Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 Genesis vehicles manufactured April 30, 2008, through March 28, 2012. The vehicles may contain brake fluid which does not protect against corrosion of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).
- Consequence: If the module corrodes, reduced brake effectiveness may result, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners and instruct them to bring their vehicle to a dealer for service. Hyundai will inspect the HECU module for proper operation, and will replace the modules as necessary. Hyundai will replace the factory brake fluid in those vehicles that have not previously had the factory brake fluid replaced. These repairs will be done free of charge. The recall began on December 24, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 or by email at [email protected]. Hyundai's recall number is 114.

Positive 2012 Hyundai Genesis car reviews

I recently traded in my Lincoln Town Car 2003, which I had owned for 8 years. I was looking for a car that was more stylish, but still provided the same level of comfort and ride as my previous car. The 2012 Genesis Sedan was the closest match I could find within my budget. I was pleasantly surprised by the advanced technology and the impressive performance of the V8 engine. The car's body design is also very appealing, and my grandson loves it too. The interior is sleek and the exterior is distinctive, especially with the Genesis Wings. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and had a great buying experience at San Tan Hyundai in Gilbert, Arizona.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the front sensors have failed and are always on, causing the curb warning to fail. It seems that a replacement of all front sensors is required. It's disappointing to see this issue arise, especially when my wife's 13-year-old Volvo sensors have had no issues. In the two years since my last review, several areas of my car are unexpectedly beginning to show signs of wear, despite only having 39k miles. Firstly, the black leather interior is showing signs of white blotches. The dealer tried to blame perspiration, but I showed him the areas where no one would touch the leather for any period of time, such as the rear upper door. Unfortunately, there was no support to correct the problem other than a phone number for a leather dye shop. However, I recently completed a 40k service and all other areas of the car checked out okay. New tires were required due to dry rot, but everything else was fine. So, after six years, 43k miles, and a 26-mile round trip commute mostly on express lanes of the interstate (with a 65 MPH speed limit), my car is holding up well. I plan on keeping her until at least 2022 for a full ten years. I think she'll make it, and then some. OLD REVIEW: I bought my 2012 Genesis 5.0 new, and it was my second Hyundai. My first Hyundai was a 1987 Sonata. So, I had a brief 25-year interlude between Hyundais, but man oh man, what a difference a generation makes! I immediately changed the wheel, trunk, and steering wheel emblems to the Korean wings (removing or covering the flying 'H') and no one knows what I'm driving. I've had people in parking lots ask me how I like my Bentley ;-) And I tell them just fine. The 5.0 V8 gets V8 gas mileage in the city, and on the interstate, I average 30+ miles to the gallon thanks to Hyundai's economy mode. I'm not exactly sure what ECO mode does, but I don't care - it works! Driving comfort is second to none, and the get-up-and-go is impressive.Living in the metro DC area and driving the beltway frequently, I have found myself having to exclaim, 'whooo nelly!' when I accelerate to get onto I-495, as this car smoothly reaches speeds in excess of the speed limit in no time. The truck space is ample, with enough room for two sets of golf clubs and more. Passengers in the back seat have complimented the roominess. The ride is incredibly smooth on both city and highway roads, and the tire tread wear is holding up nicely with no issues. All other wearable items are in good condition. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my car, and I am looking forward to getting all ten years of my warranty out of it.

I purchased my 2012 Genesis in August 2011 and have since put 33k miles on it. Unfortunately, I have had a few issues with the car. The navigation had to be replaced, and the fuel injectors were so dirty that the car would stall while driving. Recently, the oxygen sensor had to be replaced as well. However, after contacting the BBB and a year of persistence, a Hyundai representative came to the dealership and replaced the throttle body. Since then, I have not had any issues with stalling. It was a frustrating experience, but I am grateful that the issue was finally resolved after four repair attempts over the course of a year. It has been almost three years since the final repair, and the car is running smoothly.

When it comes to comparing the value and comfort of cars, I highly recommend considering the options available. As someone who has driven Japanese cars for 30 years, I must say that Korean cars have surpassed Japan in my opinion. The driver's seat in my 2012 Genesis fits just right around me, which makes me feel more secure. It reminds me of what my Uncle used to say about the P-51 he flew in WW-2, only he said

I'm so glad to hear that you purchased a 2012 Genesis 4.6 and traded in your Lexus IS 350! It sounds like you're having a blast with your new ride. The car is truly awesome and performs greatly, not to mention the impressive 26 mpg in your commute. It's amazing that it's not even broken in yet! In my opinion, Mercedes and BMW have some serious competition. The Genesis delivers a reliable package in the luxury segment. The integration of the electronics, navigation, sound system, and adaptive cruise control is well done.

The Genesis is a car that could benefit from stronger roots. I owned the car for a little over a year and drove about 30K miles before deciding to move on. I initially purchased the car because of its spacious interior and amazing 3.8L engine, which produces 333 horsepower. However, I found that the car didn't quite meet my standards of what a 'luxury car' should be in terms of ride, handling, and amenities. While this was only the base model, the car lacked some of the features that I was looking for in a luxury car. I owned a black/black Genesis with the base radio, which apparently, the optional upgrades really only involve a Lexicon radio and some sun visors in the rear. The relationship started off well, but quickly turned sour towards the end. My initial expectation of the Genesis was a nicely appointed and comfortable ride with a small hint of Euro feel. What I received was a car that was not as comfortable as I had hoped. I spoke to my local dealer about my concerns, but unfortunately, the car was set up in a way that didn't quite work for me. The next thing that bothered me was the lack of front seat support and the feeling of sliding to the passenger seat while making a turn. Again, this was something I could deal with, although, the fact that it took about a day each time the car was started to connect the Bluetooth, and the fact that the Bluetooth has such weak sound compared to other cars I have driven really brought my feelings for the car down. The faux wood felt more like plastic, which if pressed, you could see the plastic flex and the seats lacked any real support, which lead to my tail bone and back to hurt at all times. The car may grow on you as you see the depreciation drop harder than the economy in 2007, but it will be only because you are underwater and no one will accept the car as a trade. If you are in the market for a full-size luxury car, I recommend keeping your mind open to manufacturers that are used to building luxury cars such as Mercedes, BMW, Infinity, Lexus, Jaguar, etc. While this car is wonderfully priced, it depreciates like a Hyundai and parts are very rare, so insurance payments will be larger than expected. Thank you for considering my advice.

I have the 6 cyl sedan and I've noticed a delay of about 1-2 seconds from when I hit the gas pedal until the car moves, especially from a rolling stop or over a speed bump. This delay can be dangerous, especially when turning across traffic. However, I do love the car otherwise. I hope this issue can be fixed soon, as I would consider purchasing another one in the future. I also experienced an issue with the AC compressor at 3000 miles, but it was fixed within a week. Overall, I have had a positive experience with the car.
