2000 Pontiac Grand am problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.

The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.

These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.

A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.

All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-15
  • VIN: 1G2NF12T9YM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The ignition is faulty. My ignition allows my radio to turn on randomly. I could have the car off, I'm not in it at all. If I get inside to go somewhere and the radio is already on before I put the key in. Most times it's not a big deal. The car starts and I go about my business. Recently I've been experiencing needing to get a jump because the battery gets run down over the radio being on. When I'm inside the car and it's running I'm able to pull the key completely out of the ignition and the car stays running until I put my key in and turn it to the off position. I've gotten the recall cards since I bought the car 5 years ago. On the card it lists the cause as "unintended ignition key rotation". I scheduled a appointment for this to get fixed. Low and behold they cut 2 keys for me and that's it! I can make the car available for inspection at any time requested in advance.

2000 Pontiac Grand am recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 2000 Pontiac Grand am.

2014-07-03
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

Negative 2000 Pontiac Grand am car reviews

When I first bought the car, I noticed that it pulled to the left at speeds over 50 mph. I contacted Pontiac, but unfortunately, they did not provide me with a satisfactory solution. However, I took it to a local Chevy dealer where a friend of mine works, and he discovered that the left strut was not installed correctly. After fixing it, the car drives perfectly now.

I bought my car brand new and unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. The fuel pump went out at 26000 miles, and the seals around the passenger windows leaked, causing some interior damage at 29000 miles. Additionally, the front bearings had to be repacked at 32000 miles, and the windshield plastic moldings flew off while driving down the road. I also had some trouble with the window falling off the door, which cost $600 to fix. Despite getting it fixed multiple times, the rearview mirror still falls off repeatedly. Unfortunately, these issues have made me hesitant to purchase another Pontiac or domestic car in the future.

I loved my car at first, it was my very first new fast car. I have always done regular maintenance and used only fully synthetic oil. I treated this car like my baby. Unfortunately, I have had to bring it in for repairs more times than I would like to admit. Luckily, the dealership talked me into getting the full warranty, or I would have been in trouble. I have had to replace the power steering pump, alternator at 60,000 miles, and fix the ABS light twice. Additionally, anything that was electrical went out, including the signals, daytime running lights, fuel gauge, and of course, the most expensive repair, the transmission. Despite these issues, I still love the looks of my car and it gets me lots of attention for being fast. However, I am disappointed with everything that has gone wrong with it.

I have the V6 with almost all the frills. While it's fun to drive, I've had some trouble with maintenance. Fortunately, Pontiac has been very accommodating with repairs, but unfortunately, they're needed quite often. My car has only 42,000 miles, with just 6,000 added in the past year. In addition to normal maintenance, I've had to fix the compressor, head gasket, driver's side window (which fell into the door), blinkers that quit on left-hand turns, clock display that occasionally disappeared, brakes, and now it needs new struts. All of these repairs have cost me over $3000, which is quite a lot for things that shouldn't have broken yet. I never dreamed I would want to trade it, but now I'm looking. I'm a bit worried about what I might have to spend to keep it running, but I'm hopeful that I'll find something that suits me better.

I've been driving my Pontiac for 7 years and have put over 120,000 miles on it. It's a pretty comfortable ride, quick enough for daily driving, and fun to drive. While it's had a few issues with reliability, it's always gotten me to my destination without any major problems. The gas mileage averages in the mid-20s, but that's mostly due to my driving style. Although it may not look the best with peeling clearcoat and a disintegrating dashboard, it still starts up on the first try and gets me where I need to go without any fuss.

I'm so glad to hear that you've come back to GM after all these years, and that you're enjoying your new car so much! It sounds like you made a great choice between the Grand Prix and AM, and I'm happy to hear that you're finding it both beautiful and quick, while still getting great gas mileage. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us, and we hope you continue to enjoy your Pontiac!

I'm so glad to hear that you found the car of your dreams! It's great to know that safety is a top priority for you and this vehicle definitely delivers. Despite being hit four times in the past two years, it's amazing that the car still looks and functions perfectly, with only minor injuries to the occupants. The first accident sounds pretty serious, but it's impressive that the car was easily repaired and the occupants were okay. It's also great to hear that the car has good gas mileage and plenty of room for both people and furry friends - your two dogs must love it!

I absolutely adore my grandma's car! Although there have been a few minor issues, nothing serious has ever occurred. Occasionally, the check engine light comes on when I drive over a large bump, but my mechanic explained that it's just a signal being sent to the engine due to stress, and it doesn't actually need to be fixed. Pontiacs have a lot of computer codes inside the car, which is why some reviews mention the check engine light being on. Apart from that, I think this car is fantastic! It has great pick-up and amazing fuel economy.

  4. Darrell Lesch 2024-08-10

When I bought this car, it already had 165k miles on it. My Volvo's payments were $400.00 a month, and I had to spend at least $1000-$2000 on repairs just to keep it on the road! For the last three years, I was never told exactly what was wrong, but they definitely wanted their money! Since I purchased the Pontiac, I have only had to replace the ignition switch for $400.00. I now know that the intake manifold gasket will need to be replaced, the A/C needs to be fixed, and the passenger side windows no longer roll down, but I must fix them soon since I live in MS! Even with all these repairs, I have still spent less than what I put into my USED Volvo over a one year period. I think that I will stick with the Pontiac- did I mention that I purchased it for $1000.00?

I'm so glad to hear that you've had no trouble with this car! It sounds like it's a blast to drive - sporty, sleek, and comfortable.
