2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Endeavor is a mid-size crossover SUV built by Mitsubishi Motors at their manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois from 2003 until 2011. Based on the PS platform, it was the first vehicle built under Mitsubishi's "Project America", a program aimed at introducing vehicles for North America without having to compromise for, or accommodate, global markets.

Design

Its design origins can be traced back to the Mitsubishi SSU which debuted at the 1999 North American International Auto Show, although the Endeavor does not share the concept's mechanical underpinnings. The prototype was powered by a 305 hp (227 kW) version of the 6A13TT 2.5-liter twin-turbo V6, which directed the power to a full-time all-wheel drive system through its INVECS-II five-speed automatic transmission and AYC. When the Endeavor debuted in March 2003, it used the 6G75 3.8-liter V6 offering 215 hp (160 kW) and 250 lb⋅ft (339 N⋅m), mated to a four-speed automatic transmission with an optional all-wheel-drive system that splits the torque 50/50 by default.

Despite some reasonably favorable reviews on its release, the Endeavor's performance in the marketplace failed to meet Mitsubishi's expectations. On its release in March 2003 the company aimed for 80,000 annual sales but had achieved only 32,054 by the end of its debut year, and sales fell every year thereafter.

Common 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor, common problems reported include:

  • Engine Smoking at Higher Mileage: At higher miles, the engine may tend to smoke, which is often caused by valve seals. This problem can be addressed by replacing the valve seals.
  • Wheel Bearings Replacement: Some owners have needed to replace wheel bearings around 100,000 miles. While this repair is relatively straightforward and parts are affordable, it is a common maintenance issue for this model.
  • Parking Brake Cable Lock Nut Issue: There have been reports of the parking brake pedal cable lock nut not being tightened to the proper torque specification. This can lead to the lock nut loosening and coming off, reducing the effectiveness of the parking brake. Dealers can inspect and tighten the lock nut as necessary.
  • Retaining Bolts for Propeller Shaft: Another reported issue involves the retaining bolts that attach the propeller shaft to the center bearing flange and/or the rear differential flange. These bolts may be missing, not sufficiently tightened, or over-tightened. This problem can be addressed by inspecting and replacing the bolts.

These common problems highlight some of the issues that owners of the 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor have faced, ranging from transmission and engine issues to brake and structural concerns.

2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor engine

Is a Mitsubishi Endeavor a good vehicle?

It's quiet, has a fairly comfortable ride and secure handling, but cornering isn't particularly agile. The refined 3.8-liter V6 provides strong acceleration. Like most car-based SUVs, the Endeavor didn't come with low-range gearing, but the AWD is appropriate for snow and sand.

How many miles do Mitsubishi Endeavors last?

A used car in 2010, the Endeavor already had 200,000 miles on it – way past the powertrain limited warranty. Still, according to Grubb, she only needed to replace the thermostat, tires, and brakes since then. She's also racked up an additional 100,000 miles driving across Missouri to visit her family.

Why won t my 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor start?

The most common reasons a Mitsubishi Endeavor won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

Why did they stop making Mitsubishi Endeavor?

The Mitsubishi Endeavor was produced in the US between 2003 and 2011 until it was discontinued due to poor sales.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-15
  • VIN: 4A4MN31S44E
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: THE CAR HAS BEEN ACCUMULATING FLUID ON THE FLOOR OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE. USURE OF WHERE THE PROBLEM WAS, WE HAVE BEEN ABSORBING THE WATER AND AIRING OUT THE CAR. MOLD HAS ACCUMULATED AS WELL (BLACK MOLD) AND NOW I KNOW WHY I'VE HAD REPEATED RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS, INCLUDING PNEUMONIA THREE TIMES OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS. RUST IS ALSO FORMING DUE TO THE CONSTANT HUMIDITY LEVELS INSIDE THE CAR. THE BRAKE PEDAL SEEMS TO BE RUSTING AS WELL AS THE DRIVER'S SIDE CHAIR FLOOR MOUNT. I CANNOT SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE ELECTRICAL WIRING, AS IT IS COVERED BY THE PANELS. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS TIMES THAT DUE TO THE LIQUID ON THE FLOOR OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE, MY FOOT HAS SLIPPED WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE WHICH HAS LED TO POTENTIAL ACCIDENTS. AS I CANNOT SEE THE FLOOR ITSELF (DUE TO THE CARPETING), I DON'T KNOW IF THAT IS RUSTING OUT AS WELL. I HAVE NOT TAKEN IT TO A DEALER YET, SINCE I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS... I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE RAIN WAS GETTING INTO THE CAR SOMEHOW. WELL, SINCE IT HASN'T RAINED IN OVER ONE WEEK, AND THE PUDDLE IN THE CAR WAS WORSE THAN EVER BEFORE, I SUSPECTED THE A/C SYSTEM. I WENT ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND YET THERE IS NO RECALL? I AM APPALLED THAT THIS SITUATION HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED? FUNGAL RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS CAN LEAD TO DEATH, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE VULNERABLE. SLIPPERY BRAKE PEDALS, RUSTING FLOOR BOARDS AND RUSTING SEAT FLOOR ANCHORS, POTENTIAL FOR ELECTRICAL SHORTS AND/OR FIRES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. THE COMPANY HAS APPARENTLY NOT TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR THESE ISSUES. PERHAPS IT WILL TAKE A DEATH FOR A RECALL? I WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASIZE THAT NO MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO DEFINITIVELY TELL US WHERE THIS LEAK WAS COMING FROM, NOR WERE WE ABLE TO TELL... UNTIL NOW. IT HAS BEEN TWO YEARS. THIS CAR HAS NO RESELL VALUE AND SHOULD NOT BE SOLD DUE TO THE POTENTIAL FOR SERIOUS HARM. THIS MATTER IS LONG OVERDUE!

Negative 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor car reviews

  1. Braulio Reilly 2024-09-28

I purchased my Endeavor in March and overall, I have had a good experience with it. However, I have noticed that the gas mileage is not as good as I had hoped. While I do get 20mpg on the highway, I only average about 14 mpg in town, which is lower than the 17 mpg it was rated for. Additionally, I have noticed that the valves tend to 'clack' when using mid-grade gas, although this does not seem to affect performance. I have found that using high grade gas helps to alleviate this issue. It is worth noting that there are mixed comments on this topic, which makes me wonder if there are different batches of SUVs. Lastly, as someone who is 5'4

  2. Elwyn Thiel 2024-06-21

Firstly, I really like the interior, which is one of the reasons why I bought it. However, I did experience some issues with the differential at the beginning. It was making a noise and I could feel it too. I took it to the dealer four times (long story) and I still don't think it's been fixed properly. I also had a problem with the sunroof leaking, which required three visits to the dealer. Currently, I am having an issue with the 'Service Engine Soon' light, which has appeared four times despite multiple visits to the dealer. Additionally, it's important to note that the Endeavor's tank should be filled with high octane gas. If regular (87 or 89) gas is used, the engine will not work properly. Unfortunately, I will have to take it in for service again due to the 'Service Engine Soon' light.

My 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor has had some issues, such as the side molding coming off in the first week and the A/C going out twice. There was also a squeak and grind noise in the steering wheel, which was resolved by replacing the steering column at about 15,000 miles. Although the seats squeak and the radio (am/fm) & CD make an awful noise, the dealer is currently working on resolving these issues. Additionally, I would like to add another set of mud guards as the car tends to get dirty easily. While the front dashboard scratches easily and cannot be cleaned or buffed out, the side mirrors have good visibility. However, they can be a bit of a pain when trying to reach a drive-thru window. Lastly, I have noticed that the cloth seats are already wearing out threads with only 21,000 miles. Despite these issues, I am confident in the overall quality of my car.

This is a nice vehicle, don't get me wrong, but I do miss the power of my old full-size V8 SUV. However, I love the styling and radio in this one. I am disappointed by the crummy gas mileage though, as my big V8 Chevy did better.

Excess oil usage has been observed, with approximately 1 1/2 quarts being added between oil changes. Blue smoke has been discovered coming from the tailpipe, and despite the dealership's inability to pinpoint the problem, I remain concerned about the car's reliability. However, I must say that the ride is smooth, and the car is very comfortable and fun to drive. I plan to trade it in after 2 years.

Hi there! I noticed that you've owned quite a few cars in the past, including a VW, Chevrolet, Nissan, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, and Toyota. When you bought your Mitsubishi Endeavor, you mentioned being concerned because you had heard some negative comments about Mitsubishi cars. However, I'm happy to hear that you've had a great experience with your Endeavor! It drives smoothly and has been very reliable, with no need for repairs beyond regular maintenance. With 176,000 miles on it, it seems like it could easily go for another 300,000 miles without any issues. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I bought the Limited AWD. I absolutely love the general appearance, especially the blue lights on the dash at night. The stereo system is fantastic and the seats are extremely comfortable both in the front and back. The car drives smoothly and has good interior room, A/C, gas mileage, and an A/T gear shifter. Although there are several options that are not available such as memory seats, garage door remote, third seat option, auto headlights, GPS, and side curtains, I still think it's a good vehicle for the price. The dash and door materials look a bit cheap, but I still like the overall style of the dash. It could use a bit more power under the hood, but it's adequate for city driving and only struggles a bit up those hills. With a few more options, this vehicle could be one heck of a situation!

I purchased this vehicle new from the dealership. In everyday driving, I average 19 MPG. The only expenses I have had are for normal wear and tear items. Although I had a problem with the clear coat, the dealership took care of it at no cost to me. With 124,000 miles on this SUV, it still looks and drives like new. The engine and transmission are very responsive, and it has a great highway ride. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone interested.

You'll be happy to know that you can find used, low mileage Endeavors for only $10,000 to $12,000, which is a great deal considering their original MSRP. Mitsubishi dealers certify them with a 10 year / 100,000 mile warranty, so you can rest assured that you're getting a quality vehicle. We were able to purchase our 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor XLS AWD with only 13,000 miles on it, which was originally listed for $32,000, for the amazing price of $18,800 with the 10/100 warranty. Here are some of the pros of this vehicle: it has an awesome value, a powerful engine, a very roomy interior, a sweet car-like ride, great visibility out the front, a 300W stereo, tiptronic shifting option, big side mirrors, and large cargo room. Of course, there are some cons to consider as well, such as poor rear visibility, unattractive looks from the rear, and the location of the steering wheel spokes, but overall, we think this is a great choice for anyone in the market for a reliable and spacious vehicle.

I absolutely love this car! It's perfect for packing in all my friends and beach gear and heading up to Tahoe with the air conditioning blasting. Even in the snow in Reno, while others are stuck on the side of the road, my Endeavor drives on past them with ease. Thanks to the Eclipse engine, it's both fast and fuel-efficient, with plenty of leg, head, and cargo room for me and my tall family, as well as all our groceries. It's been consistently reliable, with the only downside being a lemon of a driver's seat that I've taken to the dealer six times to have repaired, but unfortunately it remains unrepaired to this day. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone, even the most discerning of drivers!
